1 "There's A Reason"; A Journey Through the Factories That Make Postum, Grape Nuts and Post Toasties (post-1914)
Battle Creek, Michigan Postum Cereal Company After 1914 Hard Cover Good-plus No Dustjacket as issued
This is an amazing little book published after the death of C.W. Post, the founder of the Postum Cereal Company which produced Grape Nuts and Post Toasties as well as the coffee substitute, Postum. From 1905 until his death in 1914 C.W. sued, was sued, and gained a reputation as a charlatan who worked overtime making bogus health claims against caffeine. He also came up with what was called a mysterious slogan for his breakfast beverage "There's a reason ...", thus the title of the book. Great pictures abound in here -- the ones at the front in color show such things at Post's private office. Most photos, however, are of the plant and people at work making the products with help from mighty machinery. Book measures 7-1/2" x 9" and has 47 pages. It's tightly bound with clean pages and no writing. Faults are exterior -- a few little stains and a few tiny spots of edge wear to the green border around the cover picture. Overall quite good. It's puffery of course, but fun puffery!

Advertising Blotters Woodall Stenographic Office, Woodall Letter Service (1920's)
5 Advertising Blotters Woodall Stenographic Office, Woodall Letter Service (1920's)
St. Paul, Minnesota Brown & Bigelow 1921, 1929 Very good condition
Here we have six unused ink blotters advertising under two names. The Woodall Stenographic Office blotters were all printed in 1921. At that time they advertised stenographic work, mimeographing and multigraphing. The other two advertised Woodall Letter Service and both of those were printed in 1929. They maintained the same services, but added some new ones too --mimeoscoping and printing. All blotters measures 3"x6". I'm not sure where this company was from, but it retained the same phone number which began with a Wabash prefix followed by four numbers.

Aldens Fall and Winter 1951-52 Catalog
6 Aldens Fall and Winter 1951-52 Catalog
Chicago Aldens 1951 Autumn and Winter 1951-52 Soft cover Good condition
I wish the previous owner hadn't used the front cover as a scratch pad to see how much it would cost to buy two items. I wish even more that he or she had tried to erase it, maybe because the answer is wrong! Anyway this is a very nice catalog. I don't know this company and have never seen one of their catalogs, but I very much like the size which is easily handled at 5-1/2" x 9-1/2". The catalog has a whopping 972 pages of fashions for the whole family, toys, jewelry, engagement rings, household items, furniture, guns, shoes, typewriters and much more. This is a complete immersion into material culture at the beginning of the 50's -- 65 years ago. The order blank is still inside and has not been used. Only other fault is creasing to lower corners both front and back, but both have been discretely taped for strength.

The book is over-sized at 8-1/2"x 11" and has 80 pages. Minor small horizontal creases to spine, likely endemic to the publishing process, but otherwise clean and tightly bound. Bicycle Certificate and Warranty Oxford Manufacturing Company 1895
13 Bicycle Certificate and Warranty Oxford Manufacturing Company 1895
Chicago Oxford Manufacturing Company 1895 Good-plus
At the time this manufacturer's certificate and warranty was extended in 1895 bicycles were all the rage. The warranty was good for a year from the date stated, October 14, 1895. Here's what is promises: " This is to certify that the Oxford Bicycle No. 1113 is warranted to be free from defective materials or workmanship, and we will make good any defects found, free of charge, when such part or parts are returned to us (all charges prepaid) for examination. The guarantee does not apply to damage resulting from accident, rough usage, or neglect." It also mentions that the Morgan and Wright's Pneumatic Tires which were used on the bikes were guaranteed by Morgan and Wright. The certificate/warranty measures 7-3/4" x 9" and is very readable with no tears. There are a few spots of foxing, but very minor. It had also been folded, but I ironed it and flattened it in the book press.

Boys Grown Tall; A Story of American Initiative (50 Cleveland Leaders, 1944)
14 Boys Grown Tall; A Story of American Initiative (50 Cleveland Leaders, 1944)
Cleveland, Ohio The Plain Dealer 1944 Hard Cover Very good
This book is not seen as often as you would think. I had one ten years ago and just now got this one. It was rather inexpensively put together, but it's a genealogical gold mine with fifty biographies of Clevelanders of the day. It's comprised of a group of articles reprinted in book form. They were originally written for the Sunday Cleveland Plain Dealer and appeared throughout March, April and May, 1944. Surnames included are: Black Cary, Case, Champion, Chapin, Codrington, Coe, Collens, Cox, Crawford, Dunn, Eaton, Eide, Emerson, Frackleton, Gerhauser, Girdler, Gund, Harshaw, Holliday, Hood, Hoyt, Humphrey, Johnson, Joyce, Klumph, Kulas, Ladds, Leece, Lewman, Lincoln, Martin, Mather, McCrea, McIntyre, Ogelbay, Otis, Reedall, Rivitz, Rogers, Rossiter, Sears, Smith, Stilwell, Weatherhead, Weaver, White, Woodruff and Wysor. Book measures 7"x10" and has 119 pages bound with a plastic comb. There's a drawing for each subject and lots of anecdotes.

Build Beauty, Economy, Permanence into your Home with Curtis Woodwork (1944)
15 Build Beauty, Economy, Permanence into your Home with Curtis Woodwork (1944)
Clinton. Iowa Curtis Woodwork 1944 Soft Cover Fine Condition
I love when a nice ephemera item is hiding extras on the same subject. I bought the main booklet and -- surprise! -- I got two extra small booklets about kitchens and entrances and a letter from the company. Home builders knew that after the war there would be many people, especially veterans, yearning for a home of their own. The building trade started early to feed the pent-up desire, but by the time this advertising came out the end of the war was only a year away -- 1945. The yellow pamphlets measures 3-1/2" x 6-1/4". The large booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 15 pages covering windows, exterior doors, interior doors, built-in china cabinets, stairways, fireplace mantels, and kitchen cupboards. All items mentioned are included.

Burdock Blood Bitters Trade Card (Man with Child in Head)
16 Burdock Blood Bitters Trade Card (Man with Child in Head)
Unknown Burdock Blood Bitters Unknown Very good
This has to be the oddest trade card ever produced. I've had it for many years and, as you can see, it is part of the montage photo at the top of my website. I have finally decided to let it go even though I have still never figured out why the guy's head's ripped open to expose a rather creepy child inside. The turns of the "paper" look so real it's amazing. The card was issued to sell "the greatest of all blood purifiers." It's larger than average and measures 4-1/2"x6" and has numerous testimonials at back showing how effective it was for curing dyspepsia, biliousness, sick headache and constipation. The card was given to customers by H.T. Hess Druggist, Jackson Centre, Pennsylvania. Card shows a small bit of edge wear and toning to bottom corners on reverse side.

Cleveland, Ohio Arcade Stores Savings Stamps (1950's)
17 Cleveland, Ohio Arcade Stores Savings Stamps (1950's)
Cleveland, Ohio Arcade Stores Date unknown, circa mid-1950's Card cover Very good
I grew up with top Value stamps and Green stamps, but I have no memory of savings stamps from the Cleveland Arcade Stores located on Euclid Avenue through to Superior. There are lots of stamps laid-in to the booklet and just a few pasted. There are actually three different stamps too -- Acrade Stores, Vita Mart, and F.& S.. Vita Mart was a health food store. The other store mentioned on the booklet was Toddle Town, an infants and childrens' store. The booklet measures 3-1/2" x 6". An unusual collectible not often seen.

18 CVA Mountain Rifle & Kit Promotion Materials (1977)
Haddam, Connecticut Connecticut Valley Arms Inc. 1977/78 Fine condition
Wow! This is a really nice find. Inside this envelope are many pristine, unused advertising products. The envelope was never mailed which is likely why everything inside is so perfect. The contents include the following: a letter to the dealer; a 1978 catalog replete with price sheet; a huge wall or window banner measuring 12" x 52"; and a counter card (10-1/2" x 14") affixed with a pad of tear-off coupons. None were used AND we have a second unused pad as well.

19 Durrell Armstrong's Player Piano Co. Inc. 1991-1992 Catalog
Wichita, Kansas Player Piano Company Inc. 1991 1991-1992 Catalog Soft cover Very good condition
This is a remarkable trade catalog which confines itself to all things player piano, but if you have one, or want one, this is fun to read. Right on the front cover Armstrong says he has "the lagest selection of player piano parts and accessories in the world" It sure looks possible! The first section displays such things as bellows cloth, lubricants, punches, gaskets, leather and ward washers, suction units and much, much more. The second section is all about those music rolls, but not all of them are vintage. Well, they are now because the newest songs are from the late 80's! Also included is an unused order blank. Fayette Journal Illustrated: Special Edition Historical, Industrial (West Virginia, 1911)
20 Fayette Journal Illustrated: Special Edition Historical, Industrial (West Virginia, 1911)
Fayette County, West virginia Fayette Journal Company 1911 Special Edition. November 1911 Card cover Good condition
I have never seen this magazine before, but it's certainly interesting -- history, business and industry, especially mining. There are many photographs throughout and an extensive text. The magazine is oversized at 11" x 14" with 83 pages. As you can see. there is some light staining to lower edges, both from and back, with a bit more to back. Amazingly, the pages inside are white and bright and the binding is tight with no tears. This is coal territory, so much of the focus is on that, though there there are other things as well. Surprisingly, there aren't many of these out there.
