Chinese Comic Journey To the West (20 booklets in Box, 1996)
3 Chinese Comic Journey To the West (20 booklets in Box, 1996)
Shanghai Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House 1996 7532216462 / 9787532216468 Presumed First Soft covers Fine books and VG Box
I bought this last night at a book and paper sale -- what a surprise! I have been going to this place for 20 years and never have I seen any any Asian items I can recall. The box is covered with blue cloth and is clean and sturdy. Inside are two stacks of small comic books, ten on each side. The text is in Chinese, but the black and white drawings tell a story too. The little books measure 3-1/2" x 5". I was able to translate much, but the same exact specific item was used in every translation site which was a problem because two books are missing from that one. Mine has ALL TWENTY. The translated ones are:Dragon Palace I; Dragon Palace II; Two Mountains; Gao Laozhuang; Quicksand; White Tiger; True Hawk; Red Baby; Tongtian River; Golden Pocket; True Monkey Ling; Flaming Mountain; Fake West; Pirates of the Caribbean; Lion Camel; No Bottom Hole; Battle of Qinglongshen; and Retrieve the Scriptures. As stated the little booklets are clean and attractive, as is the box which has only a grey spot to the title box on the outside. A very nice collectible.

Chinese Travel Ephemera: Quantude Restaurant Advertising, Boarding Card, Shanghai Antique & Curio Store
7 Chinese Travel Ephemera: Quantude Restaurant Advertising, Boarding Card, Shanghai Antique & Curio Store
China Quanjude Group; /China International Travel Service 2004 Card cover Fine condition for all
I just found this array of fun things in a travel collection I bought a couple years ago. Everything was in the envelope with the restaurant advertising. The envelope, the card, and business card came from the China Quanjude Group which introduced the roast duck seen in the photo in 1864, during the third year of Tongzhi, Quing Dynasty. There's also a Boarding Card from the China International Travel Service, a small advertising card which lists the Chinese Dyanasties and the items which can be bought at the store, and lastly, two very attractive Chinese characters on beautiful paper. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Mah-Jong: Book of Instructions (1923)
9 Mah-Jong: Book of Instructions (1923)
New York city Long Sang Ti Chiense Curious Co. Inc. 1923 Card cover Good condition 4th Edition
I love the pieces parts of a Ma-Jong game, but haven't a clue as to how you would play it. So here's the answer which will hopefully keep the ancient Chinese game being played in the 21st century. The first edition of this booklet was published in 1922 by the same company. The booklet measures 5-1/4" x 8" and has 44 pages with drawings. Only two defects -- a couple small light spots of foxing to first page and a crack at the lower front corner which I re-enforced at the reverse side (see photo).

Enormous map -- it measures when completely open at 29-1/2" tall and 42" wide. The best part though is the paper it's printed on. It's heavy, glossy, and very easy to fold back up. Menu Landmark Inn(Chinese Cuisine, 1974)
11 Menu Landmark Inn(Chinese Cuisine, 1974)
No location stated Landmark Inn 1974 Card cover Very Good Condition
I've had this menu for awhile and tried many times to determine its origin, but I, still don't know. You would think that because they served an extensive list of Chinese food would have helped, but it didn't. The only clue I found was a message inside from "Danny" who took a page to enitce diners with the various types of Chinese cuisine --Mandarin, Hunan, Cantonese etc. The only reason I even know the date is because a previous owner wrote it (1974) on one of the pages. The restaurant created a showy full-page list of cocktails in addition to seven pages of entrees, appetizers and desserts. The menu measures 10" x 13" and is handsomely tied with cold cording and tassels.

Oriental Art Catalog August 27, 88, 1970 Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc.
12 Oriental Art Catalog August 27, 88, 1970 Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc.
East Dennis, Massachsuetts Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc. 1970 Card cover Very good condition
Catalog is clean and bright with no tears and no writing, and is tightly bound. The only fault is a trim to the yapped edge at side edge of front cover. This is often done because the overhang develops small tears which end up with pieces of the edge falling off. This trim was better than most. The catalog measures 7" x 10-1/2" and has black and white photographs which show both Chinese and Japanese items. Most of the works came from the estate of Andrew R. Dole of Oak Park, Illinois. Session I focused on Japanese art. Among the items were prints and paintings, snuff bottles, rugs, wood carvings, sculpture, ivory, netsuke, inro and lacquer, furniture, textiles and more. The second session was Chinese art including jewelry, pottery, porcelain, rugs and metals.

The Field Afar Magazine March, 1923 (Maryknoll Mission in Yeungkong,China)
14 The Field Afar Magazine March, 1923 (Maryknoll Mission in Yeungkong,China)
Milwaukee, Wisconsin Desmond Publishing Co. 1924 Vol. XVII, No. 3 soft cover Good-plus
This is a Roman Catholic missions magazine, begun in 1907, which recounts the activities of the Maryknoll priests and brothers working overseas. The main story is about a successful mission in Yeungkong, China which shows several photographs. The cover art is especially handsome. Magazine measures 8-1/2"x11" and is tightly bound and clean save some light foxing to margins here and there. There's also one small tear to the bottom front corner near the spine which will be mended with almost invisible, non-browning archival tape and a light vertical crease to entire magazine, likely from mailing. Not seen too often.
