A Happy New Year Bird Series Postcard Large Red Bird in Pine Boughs 1910
1 A Happy New Year Bird Series Postcard Large Red Bird in Pine Boughs 1910
Unknown 1910 Very good
The greeting, A Happy New Year, is hiding in the pine boughts in the lower left hand corner, so is easy to miss. But what a handsome card this is! It's gilded and embossed with a bold image superimposed over a small winter vignette. Lovely! This card was sent to a Mrs. C. Nundahl of Perry, North Dakota. The message reads, "Dear friend, Your card received. Thanks. It is a fine ? you have. Wish I could visit you sometime. Let us send cards once in a while. Best wishes for a Happy New Year. M.A." Card shows a little corner wear at the top, but is otherwise clean and nice.

German Best Wishes Postcard Bird and Flowers
2 German Best Wishes Postcard Bird and Flowers
Germany 1917 Very good condition
This is really a pretty card with bright colors and virtually no wear, as it was never sent through the mail. The cardstock is exceptionally heavy and the design appears to be pasted on. It's a raised design which gives it an extra dimension. On the back it says Series 1700 Made In Germany. The divided back shows the recipient to be Sophie Nundahl of Perry, North Dakota. The message side says "A Happy Birthday Jan. 30, 1917 From E."

Norristown, PA Chas. F. Hoser 1941 Vol. LVIII, Nos. 4 & 5 soft cover Fine Magazines, Good sleeves
These magazine are in incredible condition -- bright, clean -- no defects of note. I also have the two sleeves they came in with the magazine's address and that of the previous owner. It's possible the sleeves account for today's condition. The magazines addresses the activities of local groups, including prizes such as hand-embroidered tablecloth and bottles of liquor! But the big races were sponsored by the American Racing Pigeon Union who handed out cash. There is also advice for racers from a scientist who says that speed alone doesn't do the trick. Beginners can also learn from the articles and there are great ads showing needed equipment. Magazines measures 6-3/4" x 10" and had have 32 pages each.

Woman in Canoe Watching Swans Vintage Postcard
5 Woman in Canoe Watching Swans Vintage Postcard
Unknown
A lazy river flowing through a leafy glen replete with two white swans and a lady in a canoe makes for a pastoral scene. This card is European in origin and shows no less than FOUR foreign stamps. Unfortunately, the postmark is blurred so I can't read the date, but I can see that the card was sent from Frankfurt. The writing too is very difficult to read even with magnificatrionTiny bit of corner wear, but otherwise lovely.

Amazing how many species there are in Ohio and in Holmes Co. in particular. Booklet measures 4-3/4" x 8" and has 77 pages. No names or writing and very clean.

The Vermonter A State Magazine, June, 1902 (A Study In Bird-Loving), Forbes, Charles S. (editor)
8 Forbes, Charles S. (editor) The Vermonter A State Magazine, June, 1902 (A Study In Bird-Loving)
St. Albans, Vermont Charles S. Forbes 1902 soft cover Very Good Condition
I love this magazine -- very few provide a focus and stick with it from page one to done. This time the subject is "bird-loving". It's not about hunting -- it's focused on walking with your eyes open and maybe with a camera. The funny thing is there's not a picture of a single bird. It's all for you to imagine in the beautiful scenery. The author is Lucy Dunbar Denison and she had trekked all over the state to write this long article about the various birds she discovered and loved. If you're a birder this one's for you!

The Crow In Its Relation to Agriculture: Is It A Farm Pest? (1920), Kalmbach, E.R.
10 Kalmbach, E.R. The Crow In Its Relation to Agriculture: Is It A Farm Pest? (1920)
United States Department of Agriculture 1920 Farmer's Bulletin 1102 soft cover Very Good condition
Old farm bulletins are interesting even to an urbanite like me. In their day they were the gold standard, replete with the imprimatur of the Department of Agriculture. Some of the material has been overridden by modern technology of course, but there's still nuggets of gold that can be very useful. This is one of the good ones, the result of much studying of crows in various locations. Booklet has 20 clean, tightly bound pages and measures 6" x 9". Booklet is illustrated with black and white photos, a graph and a map.

The American Bee Journal (10 Issues 1882-1884), Newman, Thomas C. (editor)
14 Newman, Thomas C. (editor) The American Bee Journal (10 Issues 1882-1884)
Chicago, Ikllinois Thomas C. Newman 1882-84 Volumes XVIII, XIX, XX Soft cover Good to fair
Oh, how I wanted these! There were 20 altogether, but half of them were too awful to contemplate. The ones I bought are not going to be given tiaras for beauty, but at least they're only reasonably flawed. What makes them flawed are these things: partial spines required archival tape of five issues; a chewed lower edge of the front cover of one and to the lower right corner of another; a small bit of fairly light foxing and damp staining somewhere on each. There's also some vertical creasing, but I am going to iron them ASAP and put them in the book press overnight. There are many topics, including these -- a boss colony, honey from corn, bees as weather prophets, wintering bees successfully, a "played-out queen", fertile workers, bee and honey shows, feeding bees, gleanings from Germany, pasturage for bees; black bees as honey gatherers, and marketing honey and wax. The ten issues measure 7-3/4" x 10-1/2" and are thin with a dense text. Great ads too on the back covers.
