25th Independence Day Dance North American Association of Venezuela 1966 (program)
1 25th Independence Day Dance North American Association of Venezuela 1966 (program)
The North American Association of Venezuela 1966 soft cover Good
Surprisingly scarce program published in honor of the 25th Independence Day Dance hosted by the North American Association of Venezuela. Clearly, this was a big event, as the ads in the program are largely national -- Chrysler has the back cover and Helena Rubenstein cosmetics has the flip side. Others inside include Ponds, Sears, Chevrolet, Elizabeth Arden and many more. The program is large at 9"x12" and has much information about the event itself, the liberation of Venezuela, and the ties that bind Venezuela to the United States. Illustrated with black and white photographs. The program is clean and tightly bound, but does show light foxing to outer edge of front cover and also at first two pages. Otherwise very nice. Slight tobacco scent.

Cleveland Women's Groups: An Amazing Story (1996)
7 Cleveland Women's Groups: An Amazing Story (1996)
Clevelnd, Ohio Women Celebrating the Bicentennial (A legacy project) 1995 0961326522 / 9780961326524 Special Commemorative Edition Card cover Fine condition
This book didn't derive from the American Bicentennial, but rather from Cleveland women of 1896 and 1996. In 1896 men took over the city's 100th birthday, so when the century turned from 19th to 20th Cleveland women opened a time capsule which included a letter from Catherine Avery (Mrs. Elroy M. Avery) which asked Cleveland women what they had done to improve the city. At the time of writing she spoke of its good attributes, but also of dirty water, polluted air, homelessness and and poverty. Cleveland women had done much in that century past and pulled all of their work together to create this book which includes 149 pages of women's organizations replete with information on each. Booklet is clean with no names or writing, no spine crease or any other defect. It measures 7" x 8-1/4".

Excelsior Club Cleveland New Year's Eve 1927 Musical Program
9 Excelsior Club Cleveland New Year's Eve 1927 Musical Program "The Good Old Days"
Cleveland, Ohio The Excelsior Club 1927 soft cover Good-plus condition
Ephemera from the Excelsior Club, a social venue founded in Cleveland in 1872, is not often seen, but here we have a program from New Year's Eve 1927. The club was much like the Cleveland Union Club, but for upscale Jewish families with a Germanic cultural background. From the beginning help from the Halle family of Halle's department store fame was integral to the club's success. The program shows the scenes of a musical "The Good Old Days" which required members to take to the stage as singers, dancers, musicians, actors and tambourine players. Looks like great fun and is a glimpse at a Cleveland landmark that closed in 1931 when the Excelsior melded into the similar Oakwood Club. Their last building became part of Case Western Reserve University. Program measures 5-1/2" x 9-1/2" and opens to two pages, plus another at back. Overall good, but it had been folded horizontally. I ironed it and it is now flat. Program includes many names.

10 Golden Anniversary Washington Council No. 224 Knights of Columbus, Washington D.C. 1897-1947
Washington D.C. Knights of Columbus Council No. 224 1947 soft cover Good
Lots of names in this one, so excellent for genealogy. Pages and page edges are clean, as are dark blue covers, though the latter does show some dark spots to cover as you can see in the photo. The book is illustrated with photographs, including full page portraits of key prelates of the period. Much history of the Council, as well as rosters by year of officers. Also includes a full membership directory. Laid-in is a small slip of paper penned by former owner mentioning the presence of his father and grandfather by name. Those family names were Zaruba and Stokes. Book measures 6"x9" and has 118 pages printed on quality coated paper throughout.

How to Build A Better Home / Copper and Brass Research Association
12 How to Build A Better Home / Copper and Brass Research Association
New York Copper and Brass Research Association circa 1920's-30's soft cover Very good
Very nice booklet oversized at 8"x10-1/2" Though clearly an advertising vehicle for the Copper and Brass Research Association, the contents are most impressive -- NOT a "fluff piece." It's illustrated throughout with both photographs and drawings with the emphasis on the use of brass and copper as an investment for the future -- copper roofs, copper leaders and gutters, brass plumbing, and copper, brass or bronze hardware. Booklet has 31 pages and is clean and tightly bound. The top front edge shows evidence of something stamped on it at one time, but is smudged. There is no date, and few clues, but a drawing of a family in front of a house indicate by woman's clothing that it's 1920's or 30's.

Journal of the British Society of Dowsers (6 issues 1979-1883)
13 Journal of the British Society of Dowsers (6 issues 1979-1883)
Ashford Kent, England British Society of Dowsers 1979-1983 soft cover Very good condition
These little magazines are great fun to read whether you believe in dowsing, or you don't. They're all clean and tightly bound and there are no labels. One issue shows foxing to the first two pages (see last photo) caused by a catalog of books available in the Dowser Society Bookshop. The catalog almost makes it worth the defect -- no, I think it actually does! :-) The magazines measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and have around 47 pages each. Here's asample of topics: the use of numbers in magic and healing, dowsing and the healing art, dowsing in everyday life, reflexology, what makes a good dowser, intuition and dowsing, wells and well drilling, proxy dowsing, dowsing for Roman roads, weather prediction by dowsing, practice for water dowsing, the Lost Cross of Waltham Abbey, Orthomolecular Nutrition, cradle charms, change of body weight during water divining, the use of the pendulum and more. Lone Scouts of America: First Degree, Second Degree, Third Degree, Fourth Degree (circa 1915-1924)
15 Lone Scouts of America: First Degree, Second Degree, Third Degree, Fourth Degree (circa 1915-1924)
Chicago Lone Scouts of America circa 1915-24 soft cover Good Condition
These four booklets taught young boys all manner of subjects -- first aid, Indian crafts, natural history, astronomy and more. The Lone Scouts were loosely organized, as membership did not hinge on adult leadership. Many kids lived in rural areas and were truly lone scouts. All you had to do was sign up through the mail and you could obtain the various publications and other items. In 1924, however, the loners merged with the Boy Scouts. The strong Native American influence was that of the works of Ernest Thompson Seton. Booklets measure 4" x 6" and have a cumulative 223 page count. Booklets are clean and tightly bound, but have been used and have minor faults, but nothing egregious. There's also included two advertising pieces from the Lone Scouts, one of which is a letter and a page on how to win badges and medals, and a magazine subscription form. The other is an application to join. There is some browning to the letter which had been placed against the back of the front cover of Volume 1. I have sequestered the advertising in a cello bag and will send it as such with the booklets..

Official Program Twelfth Biennial Convention Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America Atlantic City, New Jersey 1938
16 Official Program Twelfth Biennial Convention Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America Atlantic City, New Jersey 1938
U.S.A. Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America 1938 Card cover Very good condition
Very nice clean program with just two very tiny tears to top edge of front cover. It says on the bottom of that cover that it's a delegate's memo book and as such offers blank pages for notes on one side of the pages and information on the other. This delegate whose name is at the top -- Richard Wysocki -- did not write in it. In this case it would have been even better if he had. Nevertheless, early union material is always a great find. This program measures 4" x 9-1/4".

Photograph Knights of Columbus circa 1917
17 Photograph Knights of Columbus circa 1917
Likely location, Cleveland, Ohio Unknown photographer circa 1917 Very good condition
This photo is very nice, but I initially thought because the date was apropos to WWI the uniform was military. I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to track it down, but I could only find some of the elements, not all. It wasn't until I remembered the plumed hats on the Knights of Columbus from when I was a kid that I made an easy match. The picture has a stamped logo at the bottom which comes down to meet the lower half of it on the backing. Under it someone penciled the name Rudolph Huettrich c. 1917. I think he lived at least for awhile in the Cleveland, Ohio area. With backing, the photo measures 7" x 9-1/2" and the image size with the second backing is 5" x 7". The only fault is at the back of the photo (see my picture of it). It appears to have been framed or in an album at one time.

18 Portage County Farm Bureau First Annual Year Book 1932 (Ohio)
Portage County, Ohio Portage County Farm Bureau 1932 First Edition soft cover Very good
Just got this from a collector who loved farm related ephemera. Booklet measures 6"x9" and has 44 pages. Covers the following towns: Atwater, Aurora, Brimfield, Charlestown, Deerfield, Edinburg, Mantua, Palmyra, Paris, Randolph, Ravenna, Rootstown, Shalersville, Streetsboro, Suffield and Windham.
