1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
1 1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
Unknown Location Johnson and Ward circa 1863 later printing
The 1862 map of the territories of Washington and Oregon is a lovely thing with its hand coloring and handsome double face font for lettering. If you look in the lower corner you see the number 57 which indicates it was the 57th plate in Alvin J. Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas published originally by Johnson and Browning in 1862. The question is when was this particular one printed? It states on the map that the publisher was Johnston and Ward which means it's around 1863, as that's the year the company's name changed from Johnson and Browning to Johnson and Ward. The map was made at the start of the Civil War with much land especially in eastern Oregon not settled, but you can also pick out sites such as Mt. Ranier and Fremont's Peak among others, plus you can see the route proposal for the Pacific Railroad. The map measures roughly 13" x 17". It's a guess though because it's been professionally double matted snd that's all I can see of it. Only faults are a dark spot to upper right corner and a small surface mar to mat at about 3-1/2" down from the top left. There is a small tear to the mat and a thin indentation next to it on the map itself, but the paper is not torn. The map including matting mesures 18" x 22". Will ship for $2 in U.S.

A Brilliant History Jewels at Sotheby's (1978)
2 A Brilliant History Jewels at Sotheby's (1978)
London Sotheby's 1978 Card cover Fine condition
This is an unusual catalog for an auction, even by Sotheby's many handsome examples. This one features a famous person on each page -- the Duchess of Windsor, Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, Edna Winston, Elton John, Countess Mona Bismarck, the Count and Countess du Boisrouvray, Ava Gardner, Helene Beaumont, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and Marlene Dietrich. The jewels are top drawer from the most revered jewelers in the world and each is beautifully described. Catalog is printed on glossy paper throughout. The back paper which appears to be obstructing the photos, are just narrow strips with info on both sides. Catalog is clean and gorgeous with no names or writing. It measures 9" x 10-1/2". Very special. (Advertising)

Celluloid Photo Album with 26 Cabinet Photos
3 Celluloid Photo Album with 26 Cabinet Photos
Unknown location Unknown publisher Circa late 19th century, early 20th Hard cover Very good condition
The celluloid picture albums are so pretty. This one has gilded page edges, a pictorial celluloid front cover and velvet over boards at spine and back. There is also a gold clasp which works beautifully. Inside the pages (heavy cardboard) are 26 cabinet photos and none at the back for carte de visites, so you could add. The sad part is that there is no way of finding out who these people are unless someone recognizes something or someone. The album measures 8-1/2" x 10-1/2. There are two tiny chips to the front, but you can't touch them. It's as smooth there as it is all over.

Chinese Comic Journey To the West (20 booklets in Box, 1996)
4 Chinese Comic Journey To the West (20 booklets in Box, 1996)
Shanghai Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House 1996 7532216462 / 9787532216468 Presumed First Soft covers Fine books and VG Box
I bought this last night at a book and paper sale -- what a surprise! I have been going to this place for 20 years and never have I seen any any Asian items I can recall. The box is covered with blue cloth and is clean and sturdy. Inside are two stacks of small comic books, ten on each side. The text is in Chinese, but the black and white drawings tell a story too. The little books measure 3-1/2" x 5". I was able to translate much, but the same exact specific item was used in every translation site which was a problem because two books are missing from that one. Mine has ALL TWENTY. The translated ones are:Dragon Palace I; Dragon Palace II; Two Mountains; Gao Laozhuang; Quicksand; White Tiger; True Hawk; Red Baby; Tongtian River; Golden Pocket; True Monkey Ling; Flaming Mountain; Fake West; Pirates of the Caribbean; Lion Camel; No Bottom Hole; Battle of Qinglongshen; and Retrieve the Scriptures. As stated the little booklets are clean and attractive, as is the box which has only a grey spot to the title box on the outside. A very nice collectible.

5 CVA Mountain Rifle & Kit Promotion Materials (1977)
Haddam, Connecticut Connecticut Valley Arms Inc. 1977/78 Fine condition
Wow! This is a really nice find. Inside this envelope are many pristine, unused advertising products. The envelope was never mailed which is likely why everything inside is so perfect. The contents include the following: a letter to the dealer; a 1978 catalog replete with price sheet; a huge wall or window banner measuring 12" x 52"; and a counter card (10-1/2" x 14") affixed with a pad of tear-off coupons. None were used AND we have a second unused pad as well.

Decorative Old Maps of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (Six Fine Prints in Full Color 1940)
6 Decorative Old Maps of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (Six Fine Prints in Full Color 1940)
New York City Penn Press circa 1940 Very good
I love when I can find a portfolio of prints and ALL the prints are in it. This is the fruit of a lucky day because here we have a giant portfolio measuring 20" across x 16" tall and all six maps are accounted for. The maps are very clean with no tears and are beautiful with the lavish color of the periods. The portfolio itself had a few small tears, all of which I have repaired with almost invisible, non-browning archival tape at back. The maps are as follows: The Map of the World by N.J. Visscher who portrayed California as an island (17th c.); Map of Europe by Mercator from the famous Mercator Hondius Atlat of 1633; Map of Asia by the Blaeu Family, 1662; the Holy Land by Abraham Ortelius from the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas, 1570; New Belgium, New England and Virginia by N.J. Visscher prior to the founding of Philadelphia; and Map of Canada by Guillaume P'Isle, the foremost French cartographer circa 1720. We will ship flat. DUE TO SIZE countries outside the U.S. will incur a higher shipping charge. Please contact us with destination for an exact quote. PRIORITY mail in the U.S. will likewise require additional postage, but economy mail remains at $2.00

Durham Whiffs No. I Vol. I 1878
7 Durham Whiffs No. I Vol. I 1878
Furham, North Carolina Blackwell's Durham Tobacco Co. 1878 Jan. 1, 1878 No.2, Vol. I soft cover Very good condition
I thought this might be a premium, but I did some research and found that it is one and a very early one too. Both items were given away when a customer spent a certain amount of products. The little item beside the booklet in the photo is part of the premium too, a small package of rolling papers, which are still inside the folder. That item measures 1-1/2"x3" and will arrive in its own little plastic bag inserted into the larger bag for the booklet. The cover has color art both front and back. Inside there are comics based on Mother Goose, Jack Be Nimble, Old King Cole and others, all pushing the product. Beneath them are informational materials about the product. The booklet measures 6-1/2" x 8-3/4." If you wonder why children are on the front cover here's the reason. The company had decided it was time to tell the kids what they had all been missing. So there you have it tobacco for tweens and teens!

This is the most unusual auction catalog ever. M. Studios, National Velvet, Oscars, La Peregrina, Philanthropy, the Queen, Rubies, Saphires, Mike Todd, Turquoise, Ungaro, Valentino,Versace, Volbracht, Warhol, and XY and Z. Gages The Pipe Machinery Company Wickliffe, Ohio Catalog 1958 Prices, 1961 Stock Report
9 Gages The Pipe Machinery Company Wickliffe, Ohio Catalog 1958 Prices, 1961 Stock Report
Wickliffe, Ohio The Pipe Machinery Company 1961 Hard cover, spiral binding Very good condition
A silver and black graphic and a hard surface cover announce that this catalog is something special. The only fault is a crease to lower front corner. I tried to flatten it, but with minimal success. The catalog measures 8-1/2" x 11-1/4" and has 84 pages. But at the back of the catalog are THREE surprises -- the company's January, 1961 Stock Report, a Price list for 1958, and a brochure for the company's Hilo Set Plugs. Very nice find!

10 Glimpses of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and City of St. Louis. 1904
Chicago Laird and Lee Publishers 1904 Hard cover Good condition
This souvenir book commemorates the Lousiana Exposition of 1904 with two hundred photos including 32 colorgraph views and 188 copperplate scenes. Every picture is full page with descriptions beneath. The book measures 5-1/2" x 6-3/4" and has clean and tightly bound pages. I cleaned the blue boards and improved them quite a bit, but there's still some small areas of stubborn soil. The original owner's name, F.J. Hall 1904, written with abandon on the title page. There is also a blank bookplate inside the back cover, but no name. (Entertainment Box 1)

Hartman Stock Farm Horse Department 1905 (Columbus, Ohio)
11 Hartman Stock Farm Horse Department 1905 (Columbus, Ohio)
Columbus, Ohio Hartman Stock Farm 1904 soft cover Very good condition
This is a horse lover's information/advertising book issued by S.C. and M.D. Hartman, importers and breeders of Percheron Draft and German Coaching horses for their Columbus, Ohio farm. The Hartmans also operated a poultry department, but the only reference to that here is a full page color ad and a few pictures of outbuildings and a couple pages of info. The spotlight is definitely on the horses. Contents include, among other topics, these: the Barb, or the horse of the Sahara; an anatomical study of the horse; a study of the mouth of a horse; description and illustrations of Hartman Farm; origin of the Percheron; imported Percherons, home bred Percherons; and the German coach horse. Book is clean and tightly bound, measures 7-1/2" x 10" and has 189 pages printed on quality coated paper. Only faults are a spine crease and a bit of light foxing to exterior page edges. Otherwise quite good. Hard to find.

12 Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Inc. (Designed by Cipe Peneles 1964)
New York City Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Inc. 1964 First edition card cover Very good condition Good-plus dustjacket
This is a hard item to find. I've never had one before, but I bought it years ago and it has been in a box for at least ten years. It's very nice, clean, and tightly bound with a purple dust jacket over a white card cover. The size is unique also, measuring 5" across and 11-1/2" tall and has 125 pages with many beautiful black and white photographs taken by several photographers. There is also a a lengthy text which explains the goals for the center, the history of the Lincoln Center concept, the constituent members for the center, the Lincoln fund for education and creative artistic advancement, and Lincoln Center -- the past is prelude. At the back there is much general information. The photographs capture performances, details of the interior, and beautiful pictures of the exterior.

13 Long Island Modern: The First Generation of Modernist Architecture on Long Island 1925-1960 (1987)
East Hampton, New York Guild Hall Museum 1987 Card cover Fine condition
I bought this in Michigan, so it's not surprising that a gift inscription on the bottom of the title page reads, " To---- and ----, So nice to have you in Ann Arbor." Other than that there's no defect. Crisp and clean as a whistle. The booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 36 pristine pages. Many black and white photographs show off mansions, family homes, vacation homes -- even an aluminum beach house. The text is lengthy and seriously addressed which deems it a collectible.

15 National Biscuit Company Luncheon Celebrating New Bakeries (Feb. 20, 1904)
New York City National Biscuit Company 1904 Soft cover Good condition
This is a very scarce item, expensively created. It was published for those attending a luncheon in celebration of the National Biscuit Company's new bakeries at its buildings on 15th St. and 10th Ave. New York City. Opening page and a subsequent one shows gold and red design plus a color picture at back showing a little boy in a yellow raincoat clutching a box of crackers. Text is on heavy paper and includes the speeches of dignitaries. Measures 6-1'2" x 9-3/4" with many unnumbered pages. The inside is very clean but does show faint dampstaining to top margin of pages, a stain to front cover, a repair to lower spine which seems to be holding, and a chip to bottom spine and to lower edge. Overall a very good collectible rarely seen. (Bus.)

16 Normandie Souvenir Number (The Shipbuilder Magazine June, 1935)
London Shipbuilder Magazine 1935 June, 1935 soft cover Good condition
Though this magazine leaves a bit to be desired due to creasing to cover, a small chip to outer edge of back cover and some paper loss to spine at top and bottom, it's a very desirable item. The entire issue is about the Normandie replete with several fold-out diagrams and gorgeous color paintings of the ship and its interior, plus photographs showing the machinery on board. 17 Novalux Electric Fountains (General Electric, 1934)
Schenectady, New York General Electric 1934 soft cover Very Good condition

It's very clean and tightly bound with two small tears to side edge of front cover which I repaired on the back with small pieces of archival tape which doesn't brown. Booklet is not often seen.

The card shows the parade on Main Street in downtown Rochester The card has been used and is postmarked 1909. There is some creasing to the corners, but card is really quite handsome in its plastic sleeve. Political Poster Charles E. Hughes for President; Frank B. Willis for Governor; Myron T. Herrick for Senator (Republicans, 1916)
19 Political Poster Charles E. Hughes for President; Frank B. Willis for Governor; Myron T. Herrick for Senator (Republicans, 1916)
Columbus, Ohio The Ohio Republican State Executive Committee (1916) 1916 Good condition
This is a graphically appealing poster with three Republican candidates on the same poster running for three offices in 1916. One won and the other two lost. Charles E. Hughes lost his bid for the presidency when Woodrow Wilson won the popular vote with 600,000 votes and a squeaky win in the electoral vote. The winner was Frank B. Willis for Ohio governor who later became a senator from 1921-28. Myron T. Herrick lost his bid for the Senate, but served as an ambassador to France from 1912-14 and later from 21-29 The poster measures 14" high and 20-1/2" tall. There is one tear from the right edge to Herrick's oval "frame. It was taped at reverse side by previous owner and is closed. The only other problem is a few tiny chips to bottom edge.
