2 Allen Memorial Art Museum Bulletin; Howling Wolf Plains Warrior Artist, 1992
Oberlin, Ohio Oberlin College 1992 XLVI, I Card cover Very good condition 8-1/2 Howling Wolf
This bulletin is especially nice due to a single topic filled with illustrations and much information. The artist, Howling Wolf, is introduced with an autobiography of a Plains Warrior Artist. The article is lengthy and has many small pictures and full page plates in both color and black and white. The first time Oberlin College saw this artists work was in 1904 when Helen Finney Cox brought an album of 57 drawings rendered by Howling Wolf.

Frank Lloyd Wright A Modern Aesthetic June 6 to July 15, 1986 (The Darwin D. Martin House)
4 Frank Lloyd Wright A Modern Aesthetic June 6 to July 15, 1986 (The Darwin D. Martin House)
Chicago, Illinois Struve Gallery 1986 card cover Very Good Condition
This is a beautiful catalog in very good condition. It should, however, have a white paper dustwrapper printed with the exact design on the cover of the booklet itself. It's still very attractive with no defect of note. The Darwin D. Marvin house was built in Buffalo, New York in 1903-1904 and was considered the house that truly showed Wright's genius. Wright was friends with the owners until the death of Darwin Martin in 1935. Until then he designed furniture, lighting fixtures and even dresses for Mrs. Martin. He also consulted on the couple's collection of Japanese prints and ceramics. This booklet measures 8" x 11" and is illustrated handsomely with photos of the stained glass windows and the furniture.

Glimpses of Greater Cleveland and Some Old Time Views (1904)
5 Glimpses of Greater Cleveland and Some Old Time Views (1904)
Cleveland, Ohio Whitworth Brothers Company 1904 soft cover Very Good
This is a surprisingly hard to find booklet, but a very attractive one. I especially like the paper it's printed on -- very satiny to the touch. This is not a history in words, but rather in captioned photographs. The booklet measures 8-3/4"x11-1/2" and has 33 counted pages showcasing 103 counted images of monuments, nature scenes, buildings, water scenes, businesses, downtown -- many views of a bustling city. Booklet is clean and tightly bound with just some wear to outer layer of paper over thin spine which in no way compromises the integrity of the binding. Overall nicely cared for.

Glimpses of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and City of St. Louis. 1904
6 Glimpses of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and City of St. Louis. 1904
Chicago Laird and Lee Publishers 1904 Hard cover Good condition
This souvenir book commemorates the Lousiana Exposition of 1904 with two hundred photos including 32 colorgraph views and 188 copperplate scenes. Every picture is full page with descriptions beneath. The book measures 5-1/2" x 6-3/4" and has clean and tightly bound pages. I cleaned the blue boards and improved them quite a bit, but there's still some small areas of stubborn soil. The original owner's name, F.J. Hall 1904, written with abandon on the title page. There is also a blank bookplate inside the back cover, but no name. (Entertainment Box 1)

Hartman Stock Farm Horse Department 1905 (Columbus, Ohio)
7 Hartman Stock Farm Horse Department 1905 (Columbus, Ohio)
Columbus, Ohio Hartman Stock Farm 1904 soft cover Very good condition
This is a horse lover's information/advertising book issued by S.C. and M.D. Hartman, importers and breeders of Percheron Draft and German Coaching horses for their Columbus, Ohio farm. The Hartmans also operated a poultry department, but the only reference to that here is a full page color ad and a few pictures of outbuildings and a couple pages of info. The spotlight is definitely on the horses. Contents include, among other topics, these: the Barb, or the horse of the Sahara; an anatomical study of the horse; a study of the mouth of a horse; description and illustrations of Hartman Farm; origin of the Percheron; imported Percherons, home bred Percherons; and the German coach horse. Book is clean and tightly bound, measures 7-1/2" x 10" and has 189 pages printed on quality coated paper. Only faults are a spine crease and a bit of light foxing to exterior page edges. Otherwise quite good. Hard to find.

National Biscuit Company Luncheon Celebrating New Bakeries (Feb. 20, 1904)
8 National Biscuit Company Luncheon Celebrating New Bakeries (Feb. 20, 1904)
New York City National Biscuit Company 1904 Soft cover Good condition
This is a very scarce item, expensively created. It was published for those attending a luncheon in celebration of the National Biscuit Company's new bakeries at its buildings on 15th St. and 10th Ave. New York City. Opening page and a subsequent one shows gold and red design plus a color picture at back showing a little boy in a yellow raincoat clutching a box of crackers. Text is on heavy paper and includes the speeches of dignitaries. Measures 6-1'2" x 9-3/4" with many unnumbered pages. The inside is very clean but does show faint dampstaining to top margin of pages, a stain to front cover, a repair to lower spine which seems to be holding, and a chip to bottom spine and to lower edge. Overall a very good collectible rarely seen. (Bus.)

Real Photo Postcard Men and a Bike Waiting Outside the Barber Shop (1904-18)
9 Real Photo Postcard Men and a Bike Waiting Outside the Barber Shop (1904-18)
Unknown Location AZO paper 1904-1918 Very good condition
This is a rather jaunty scene! Two men and a bicycle sit by the door while two others are enjoying the shade. I would not have guessed what type of business this was, but thanks to minute penciling to back, I spotted the words "barber shop." The card is clean and nice with just a little toning to back. No writing on it and printing is light. There's no white writing to front, but we know it's a real photo card thanks to the AZO paper. The four triangles standing straight up in each corner in the stamp box also tell us that the date span is from 1904-1918.

Real Photo Postcard Newport High School Football Team
10 Real Photo Postcard Newport High School Football Team
Good
I puzzled over this one, as it does not say WHAT Newport Football High School team this is. I doubt greatly it's Rhode Island. In fact, given the barn in the background, and the fact that it came from an Ohio collection I would bet on Newport, Ohio. Check out the two guys with the Mohawks! Anyway, it's an interesting picture with a small crease to the lower left corner and spots of isolated edge wear. It was never sent in the mail and there is no message. It's printed on AZO photographic paper and the symbols on the stamp box date it from 1904-1918.

Real Photo Postcard Stylish Edwardian Woman
11 Real Photo Postcard Stylish Edwardian Woman
Very good
This was a woman who took fashion seriously! Here she is looking regal in full high style Edwardian regalia with gloves, a feathered hat, a lace collar and a nosegay of flowers pinned to her bodice. The card shows no stamps and no writing -- never mailed -- and is very clean and nice save a small crease to the upper right corner. It was pr9inted on CyKo photographic paper which dates it from 1904 to the 20's, but her clothes say it all.

Snap Shots Of The St. Louis Exposition 1904
12 Snap Shots Of The St. Louis Exposition 1904
Chicago The White City Art Company 1904 soft cover Very Good
Booklet is very handsome. Green paper cover with raised gilt printing to title. Only fault is some light fading around the edges of the front cover. The pages ire snow white with no names or wriitng and no foxing or creasing. Scenes are very attractive and staged more dramatically and artistically than the usual exposition photogrpaphy. Booklet measures 7" x 9" and is bound with cord. Pages are not numbered, but I counted 40. All are captioned.

Summers At Watervliet (Ohio Shaker Community)
13 Summers At Watervliet (Ohio Shaker Community)
Kettering, Ohio Kettering -Moraine Museum & Historical Society 1985 Stated first edition card cover Very Good Condition
This is a nice clean booklet of 76 pages measuring 6" x 8-3/4" and fully illustrated with charming drawings and black and white photographs. Only defect is a small bit of foxing to lower corner next to spine at front cover. Otherwise beautiful, tightly bound, and with no names or writing. Tells the history of the little known Shaker settlement of Watervliet, Ohio and Bertha Furey, its last living resident. The community was closed with an auction in 1904. When she grew up Bertha married and converted to Catholicism. She died shortly before this booklet was published. (OH-2)

Jackson's Famous Photographs of the St. Louis Exposition and
14 Brown, Charles Walter Jackson's Famous Photographs of the St. Louis Exposition and "The Pike"; Louisiana Purchase Exposition - Over 200 Views and Scenes 1803-1904
Chicago Metropolitan Syndicate Press 1904 Soft cover Good
The cover of this desirable booklet shows light freckling around the edges and a one inch loss of paper to the top of spine. The latter I covered with archival tape which doesn't brown and will keep the damage contained. The photographs are wonderful -- over 200 views and scenes. It says also on the front cover that there's to be a map too, but I don't have one. With the map and none of the problems mentioned it would have been twice the price. Booklet measures 5-1/4" x 7-1/4" and is clean and tightly bound. Among the highlights are palaces, pavilions for countries, animals, the Great Siberian Railway, rides, craft demonstrations, night time electric illumination and more.

John Gilley of Baker's Island Maine, Charles W. Eliot
15 Charles W. Eliot John Gilley of Baker's Island Maine
New England Eastern Natonal Park and Monumenta Association 1978 Reprint Card cover Very good condition
This small booklet exudes simple beauty. The book was originally published in 1899 when it was printed by Century Magazine. Next it came in hardback with the help of the American Unitarian Association in 1904. The third go-round is this one ublished by Eastern Natonal Park and Monumenta Association and the help of Arcadia National Park, Maine. John Gilley was a Maine farmer and fisherman. If you have ancestors from Maine and the surname is Gilley it might offer good information. the booklet measures 4-1/2" x 6" and has 72 pages printed in perfect-for-the-message paper.

Good Housekeeping Magazine March, 1904, Cleveland, Grover; Van Dyke, Henry
16 Cleveland, Grover; Van Dyke, Henry Good Housekeeping Magazine March, 1904
Springfield, Massachusetts The Phelps Publishing Company 1904 March, 1904 Soft cover Good Condition
The cover art on this issue is an eye-catcher. There's an article in it of dog stories, so that may be why it was chosen. Among the other articles are families and public school by Grover Cleveland; a visit with the prolific author of the day, Henry Van Dyke; life in a small hotel apartment; children's literature; the trend in marrying later; women doctors; American pottery and more. The magazine measures 6-1/2" x 9-1/2" and has 330 pages of text, plus a large number of ads at back -- Victor Talking Machine Records, Heinz, Burpee Seeds, Welch's Grape Juice and more. Some of the best though are products long gone! Magazine is clean and tightly bound. The yapped edges which overhang the panes have been trimmed by a previous owner due to wear and tear. I also covered the spine in almost invisible archival tape. It didn't require it, but it's a good preventive.

A Treatise on Modern Drawn-Work In Color 1904, Houck, Mrs. Isaac Miller
17 Houck, Mrs. Isaac Miller A Treatise on Modern Drawn-Work In Color 1904
Tiffin,Ohio Self-Published 1904 Third New Enlarged Edition soft cover Very Good
This is only the second time I've ever had this for beautiful book for sale -- it's not seen too often. It's oversized at 8"x11" and is enlarged from the original of 1897. The booklet is tightly bound, but shows a small loss of paper at top of spine and a small chip to spine edge of front cover visible in photo. There are also a few dark stains to front, but these are not highly visible due to the darkness of the green paper. The author subsidized her effort with national advertising at both front and back. The text is illustrated with both black and white and color images. Much information on technique, equipment, borders, corners, the study of color, and embroidery. A very handsome item by an early woman entrepreneur. Mrs. Houck even sold the frames needed to do the work.

Theodore Seuss Geisel Reminiscences and Tributes (Dr. Seuss, 1996), Latham, Edward Connery (editor)
18 Latham, Edward Connery (editor) Theodore Seuss Geisel Reminiscences and Tributes (Dr. Seuss, 1996)
Hanover, New Hampshire Dartmouth College 1996 Limited edition soft cover Fine condition Fine
It's hard to believe that Dr. Seuss has been gone for fourteen years. This little booklet is a tribute to him and to his amazing body of work. Almost everyone can quote him. For some unknown reason the one I always think of first is, "This is not good, this is not right, My feet hang out of bed at night." The picture at frontis of him sitting at his desk is wonderful, as are the stories of him related by seven friends. There's also an into by his wife, Audrey Geisel. The booklet measures 5" x 6-1/2" and is beautifully made with its own dust jacket and very nice heavy paper. 49 pages. Only 2000 copies printed.

19 Pardee, Helen L. The Story of the Akron Public Library 1834-1942 (1943 publication)
Akron, Ohio Akron Public Library 1943 soft cover Near fine condition
This is a very elusive item. I have been selling ephemera for 18 years, live in the area, and have never seen one, much less had a copy. But here it is and in like new condition. Booklet measures 6" x 9" and has 52 pages plus an extensive index and several pages of photographs printed in sepia at both back and front. It opened in 1834 -- that's really early! -- and then became connected with the Carnegie libraries and existed in a Carnegie building from 1904 to 1941. Today the main branch on Main Street is sleek and modern.
