Cleveland Official Souvenir of the Thirty-Fifth National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic 1911
2 Cleveland Official Souvenir of the Thirty-Fifth National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic 1911
Cleveland E.W. Doty 1901 Soft cover Good
Wonderful souvenir of the encampment of the Grand Old Army in Cleveland in September, 1911. The program is clean and tightly bound, but does have some faults which include small tears to the yapped edges, a slight vertical crease to a few front pages and soil in a distinct grid pattern to back cover. This is not an oil-based stain, as it does not appear on the reverse side. The binding is tight thanks to two staples, but I wonder if at one time it was bound with thread, as there are three very tiny holes through the entire spine. At any rate, the pages are clean as a whistle and there are 92 of them. Coated paper and many black and white photographs enhance the text which is likewise plentiful. A significant item for collectors of Cleveland history, Grand Army of the Republic, or military. Measures 7"x10-1/2"

5 Lorain County Jail, Elyria, Ohio Postcard
U.S.A. S.H. Knox & Company 1911 Very good
Very nice card with one superficial crease at center that you can feel more than see. The image is bright and without fault. The postmark has faded, so not sure where it was sent from, but it was sent TO Mr. Ray C. Cook of E. 82nd Street Cleveland, Ohio. The message reads, "Aug. 27th, 1911. Dear Ray, Many thanks for getting that book. I left the money with Mama. I got your card from Cedar Point. Did you have a good time? Ethel." Will arrive in plastic sleeve

Photograph WWI Doughboy Wearing Campaign Hat (circa 1911)
6 Photograph WWI Doughboy Wearing Campaign Hat (circa 1911)
Unknown No Photographer stated Circa 1911 Card folder Fine condition
I love a box of photographs, especially when they're hidden inside a folder. You never know what awaits. Most of the time it's a disappointment, but once in a while you find a good one. I very much like this one for a couple reasons -- one, we can see details of his uniform and his campaign hat which resembles that of a mountie, and two, we're reminded of the legions of young men who fought in WWI. The photo is sepia toned and out of its folder measures 4-1/4" x 6-1/4". Sadly, there is no information on the reverse side. The closed folder measures 5-1/4" x 7-1/2" and is clean and well cared for. I wish I could find his family, but it's unlikely with nothing to go on but the image itself.

Postcard Sincere Wishes Fountain, Flowers, Pretty Girl
8 Postcard Sincere Wishes Fountain, Flowers, Pretty Girl
1913
This card is so pretty and one I have never seen before. The dress is low-cut, but there is a demure quality to this pretty girl as she leans against the fountain and trails a branch in the water. The front says simply "Sincere Wishes." Very nice condition, perhaps because it never went through the mail. Will arrive in protective plastic sleeve. The divided back shows that it was given to Sophie on May 1 -- May Day! -- 1911 "with best wishes from your friend." One wonders ...

9 Real Photo Postcard O.C. Barber Thoroughbred Pig (Barberton, Ohio 1911)
Barberton, Ohio Unknown 1911 Very good
At first glance this appears to be a giant pig -- which it is. But it's not just any old pig. This pig belonged to O.C. Barber, an entrepreneur extraordinaire, who succeeded with many businesses before launching this early effort at agribusiness. The card is postmarked Barberton, Ohio July 27, 1911 and sent to Mr. Sherman Lee of Seville, Ohio. The message reads, "This is one of O.C. Barber's thoroughbred pigs. He is a big one, isn't he? Tom Bairstow." Very clean and nice and easy to read. Will arrive in plastic sleeve.

Real Photo Postcard Union Picnic St. Mary's, west Virginia 1911
10 Real Photo Postcard Union Picnic St. Mary's, west Virginia 1911
Unknown 1911 Very Good
How charming -- a picnic with no coolers, no grills, nothing but a pretty place, hampers of food, friends and family, and mown grass to sit on. This event took place in 1911 in the Ohio River town of St. Mary's, W. Va., a very small place which got its name from a man who claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary pass by on the river in a boat. The card was postmarked April 21, 1911 from St. Mary's and sent to Mary Morgan of Logan, Ohio. The message on the divided back reads, "Dear Cousin, Glad to hear from you. Am very busy, will answer your letter as soon as I can. A crowd of us were over home Sunday and spent the day. Sadie." Card has a glossy surface and is quite nice save a small crease to upper right corner.

Sun Dial Ohio State University Humor Magazine (Christmas 1923)
11 Sun Dial Ohio State University Humor Magazine (Christmas 1923)
Columbus, Ohio Ohio State University 1923 soft cover
If you're an OSU student, or alum, this is a fun souvenir of the old alma mater in the Roaring Twenties. The cover art is charming and is slugged with the caption "Let the Wild Belles Ring Out". The emphasis here is all about humor -- as they say, Sun Dial has been "making OSU laugh since 1911." Great local ads and there's a portrait (see second picture) of basketball coach Harold G. Olsen. Magazine measures 9"x11" and has 44 pages. I repaired two tears -- one at top of spine and one at lower staple using non-browning, virtually invisible archival tape. The format and cover is remarkably similar to the Life Magazine of the day.

The Ohio Messenger (Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Ohio) November, 1911, Ensign, Francis H. (editor)
16 Ensign, Francis H. (editor) The Ohio Messenger (Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Ohio) November, 1911
Portsmouth, Ohio The Woman's Christian Temperance Society 1911 soft cover Volume XXV; Number 1
Scarce 16 page magazine densely filled with text which marries two causes in this issue -- prohibition and child labor. Measures 9-1/4" x12-1/2" and is clean and tightly bound. Folded for mailing and shows the subscriber's name and VERY minimal address at top edge. The paper has toned on the cover, but has not on the back or inside. There are a couple tiny edge tears, which I repaired with non-browning, almost invisible archival tape. Illustrated with a few small photographs, including a great one with a flag at a WTCU convention. Much information on prohibition, child labor, and the activities around both the state and the country. Very nice historical collectible, not often seen.

Trees and Men William Valentine Kelley (1911), Kelley, William Valentine
19 Kelley, William Valentine Trees and Men William Valentine Kelley (1911)
New York City Eaton & Mains 1911 Card cover Very Good Very Good
This is a nature lover's gift book, written by a nature lover and dedicated to one. It's not poetry a la Joyce Kilmer (I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree ...")it's prose all the way, capturing the link between the tree and the human soul. The author cites numerous literary authors and also probes the various cultures which revere the tree. The booklet is pristine inside with no names or writing and is tightly bound. The only fault is some fading around the edges of the dustjacket. This is one of those soft cover books which has a jacket made of fine paper and placed over a plain white card binding. Booklet measures 3-1/2" x 7-1/22" and has 29 pages.
