America 100 Years Ago: Old Views (1946, complete 32 prints in folder)
1 America 100 Years Ago: Old Views (1946, complete 32 prints in folder)
Buremberg Jacob Mendelsohn 1946 Card folder Very good
It's amazing that this item remained intact since it came out in 1946 and then was given as a Christmas gift in 1981. There is a small inscription on the reverse side of the front cover which reads, "From Konstanze, Christmas, 1981." Everything is clean and nice with just one small spot of foxing to two prints and a light freckling to the folder. The prints are on paper and measure 7-1/2" x 10". All are views of historic places -- Albany on the Hudson, Baltimore, Boston City Hall, Cleveland, Detroit, Galveston, Jefferson City -- Missouri River, Kansas, Louisville, Lockport, Ohio -- Erie Canal, New York -- Broadway, New York, New York City Hall, New York -- Park and City Hall, New York Staten Island, New York Bay, New York and Brooklyn, Philadelphia National Bank, Philadelphia Girard's Bank, Richmond, Virginia, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Sacramento, St. Louis Court House, St. Charles -- Mississippi, Wheeling, West Virginia, Washignton General Post Office, Washington Patent Office, and Weston, Missouri.

Erie Canal: History of the Canal That Made New York the Empire State From 1817 to the Present (An Exhibition Portfolio, 1971)
4 Erie Canal: History of the Canal That Made New York the Empire State From 1817 to the Present (An Exhibition Portfolio, 1971)
New York New York State Council on the Arts 1971 First printing Loose pages and Hard slipcase Pages fine; Slipcase Very good 11-1/4
This is not a book -- it's an exhibition portfolio designed to tell the story of the Erie Canal and its life in canal boats and other historic items. There's a map, photos, and art on the 50 prints. Each print is numbered which is very helpful too.. The only defect here is the slipcase which has a small bit of wear to the top of the opening and some sunning to the back. Overall it's a very nice item. It, along with six other such portfolios, were published in the early 1970's. I also have "The Lower East Side" (of New York City).

The Supreme Travel Adventure Around the World in the Franconia 1929 Sailing From New York January 19th Returning May 31st
8 The Supreme Travel Adventure Around the World in the Franconia 1929 Sailing From New York January 19th Returning May 31st
U.S.A. Cunard Line and Thomas Cook & Son 1928 Hard cover Good
Imagine a cruise lasting over four months, not to mention the cost of it! But this was 1929, the Golden Age of Travel, and not only were tourists offered the very finest, but their travel brochures were exciting too. In this case it's a HARDBACK book measuring 6"x9" with 96 pages, lavish sepia toned photographs and information on the many ports of call -- the Madeira Islands, Algeria, Monaco and the French Riviera, southern Italy, the Holy Land, Egypt, French Somaliland, India, Ceylon, Burma, Prince of Wales Island, Straits settlements and Malay States, French Indo-China, Java, Dutch East Indies, Sulu Archipelago, South China, Korea, Japan, the Hawaiian Islands, California, the Panama Canal Zone, Cuba and -- finally -- back to New York. Fares began at $2000 and went, as the ad so discretely says, "upward from there." As you can see from the photo, there is fading to the edges of the blue covers, but is clean as a whistle inside and tightly bound.

Two Sepia Postcards Castleton Speedwell Mine (1920 England))
9 Two Sepia Postcards Castleton Speedwell Mine (1920 England))
England F. Frith & co. Ltd. 1920 Very good
There's a ghostly quality to these two sepia postcards shot in the Speedwell Mine at Castleton (England), one at the Subterranean Canal and the other at "Halfway House." Both show people underground. Neither was used postally, but a cryptic remark on the back of each indicates that the cards were purchased as souvenirs -- "Visited 26th July 1920." Except for a few tiny spots of edge wear, these are quite clean and crisp. Each will arrive in its own plastic sleeve.

This is a lovely little gift book which is beautifully designed. There's a substantial brown cloth binding and a very beautiful dustjacket which is doubled for protection. The book is small, measuring just 6-1/4" across and 5-1/2" tall with 59 counted pages. There's no names or writing and everything is pristine. The essay at the front is both literary and evocative of the famous city surrounded by water. 14 Fish, Paul R.; Huckell, Bruce B. The Lake Pleasant Project; Lake Pleasant II (Arizona 1971, 1973)
Arizona State Museum 1971, 1973 soft cover Very good
Here we have two very hard to find (especially the second volume) preliminary archaeological reports on The Lake Pleasant Project which was undertaken by the Arizona State Museum with the cooperation of the Arizona Highway Department in early 1970's. The earlier one focuses on the excavation of the Beardsley Canal Site, a colonial Hohokam village on the Agua Pria River in Central Arizona. The second does likewise but indicates the Lower Agua Pria River. Both booklets are very basic in design, but offer much information, plus photographs and drawings of the excavation and its finds. 35 pages collectively. Former owner's name written in pencil at front.

Glen Echo, Maryland American Canal and Transportation Center 1971 and 1974 Card covers Good condition
Here we have two booklets each offering a different view of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Section One focuses on Georgetown (Tidelock) to Seneca while Section Two covers Seneca to Harper's Ferry. Both booklets are clean with no names or writing. The only fault is to Section Two, the cover of which pulled away from the top staple, but I re-stapled it and all is well. Both booklets have ample black and white photographs. They measure 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and have a collective page number of 120.

16 Hale, Judson D. Cape Cod Compass 1970 (Including Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket)
Dundee, New Hampshire Yankee Inc. 1970 No. 23 soft cover Very good
Very nice, clean, tightly bound magazine showing just a bit of rubbing to color at top front next to spine (see photo). Otherwise it's a beauty! If you share my love of the Cape, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard reading this is like taking a small vacation. The magazine is oversized at 9-1/2"x12" with 63 glorious color photographs and many articles of interest. It's also published by the company which produces Yankee Magazine, so you know it's going to be good. Some of the topics in this issue include the Sandwich Glass Company and its beautiful wares, the Cape Cod Canal, gulls and terns, and Charles Hawthorn and the Cape Cod School of Art, and Cape Cod lighthouses.

Reminiscences of Dover, Ohio, Hon. S. Harmount, Mrs. Eliza A. Slinguff, William W. Scott
17 Hon. S. Harmount, Mrs. Eliza A. Slinguff, William W. Scott Reminiscences of Dover, Ohio
Strasburg, Ohio Tuscrawas County Genealogical Society 1972 Reprint Soft cover Fine condition
This booklet is small, but mighty. It measures 4-1/2" x 7" with 116 dense pages. There is a lot of history here as well as names which would be helpful for the genealogist. The booklet appeared originally in 1879 at which time Dover was known as Canal Dover. I was talking to a customer on the phone the other day who told me about how it used to be Canal Dover. And then I found this in a box in the closet and there it was -- Canal Dover. The booklet is pristine -- no names or writing and VERY clean cover and pages. I doubt it's been read. P.S. That one sold and now I have a third one, so these are new pictures.

Canton, Ohio Canal Society of Ohio 1975 Resumed first Card cover Very Good Bob Klansek
This set of four commemorative booklets were published to celebrate 150 years of Ohio's Canals. And now, 42 years later, the canals are 192. The booklets are very rarely found altogether. I bought them a long time ago -- so long I'd forgotten I had them. The booklets measure 6-1/4" x 9-1/4" with 68 pages over the four. There is a good narrative and many black and white photos. The blue booklet, the first, is in good condition, but the other three are pristine.
