Christie's Auction Catalog: The Connoisseur's Eye New York 2 June, 2015
1 Christie's Auction Catalog: The Connoisseur's Eye New York 2 June, 2015
New York City Christie's 2015 #10859 Card cover Fine condition
I love the contemporary auction catalog, so beautiful compared to the ones of old with paper covers and no color pictures. The new ones are also oversized -- this one measures 8-1/4" x 10-1/2" and has gorgeous white coated paper and big color photos of the items. The auction offered European furniture, sculpture, ceramics, tapestries and carpets worth millions of dollars. The book is pristine inside and out and showcases 438 lots.

Frank Lloyd Wright A Modern Aesthetic June 6 to July 15, 1986 (The Darwin D. Martin House)
2 Frank Lloyd Wright A Modern Aesthetic June 6 to July 15, 1986 (The Darwin D. Martin House)
Chicago, Illinois Struve Gallery 1986 card cover Very Good Condition
This is a beautiful catalog in very good condition. It should, however, have a white paper dustwrapper printed with the exact design on the cover of the booklet itself. It's still very attractive with no defect of note. The Darwin D. Marvin house was built in Buffalo, New York in 1903-1904 and was considered the house that truly showed Wright's genius. Wright was friends with the owners until the death of Darwin Martin in 1935. Until then he designed furniture, lighting fixtures and even dresses for Mrs. Martin. He also consulted on the couple's collection of Japanese prints and ceramics. This booklet measures 8" x 11" and is illustrated handsomely with photos of the stained glass windows and the furniture.

Dark Jewels: Chinese Black and Brown Ceramics From the Shatzman Collection, Eunice and Herbert Shatzman
8 Eunice and Herbert Shatzman Dark Jewels: Chinese Black and Brown Ceramics From the Shatzman Collection
Chapel Hill, North Carolina Ackland Art Museum ; the University of North Carolina 2002 0965580580 Presumed first Card cover Very good
This is an exhibition catalog with beautiful photographs showing the various colors and types of ceramics from China. The catalog measures 9" x 11" and has 79 pages, plus an area at the back of the catalog for notes. These offer extra information and will take you to the item you want to see. You will also find a bibliograhy. The book is clean and tightly bound and has no names or writing. The only defects are a little toning at the margins which show in bright light and a bit of tape at the top front corner near the spine. I couldn't remove the tape, but wasn't sure I should anyway. Altogether it's beautiful and I priced it far below others. The catalog has an ample text, so there's much to read.

11 No author stated The Opulent Eye: Christie's Auction 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art, Ceramics and Carpets New York, October 21, 2015
New York city Christie's Auction 2015 October 21, 2015 Card cover Fine condition
Fabulous! From its beautiful cover to its pages of splendid treasures this isn't your mother's auction catalog. Before the 80's the catalog was much smaller and covered with a drab colored wrapper and small black and white photographs inside. All that's gone now because these catalogs are like coffee table books in full color with great descriptions. They're dream books and bigger too. This one measures 8" x 11" with 242 lots. I am so enamored of them that I bought twelve last Saturday!

Though simply made, the one stand-out characteristic that enticed me to buy this booklet is the inclusion of beautiful pages made from textural Japanese paper used to divide sections.
