Cleveland, Ohio B.A. Marquard circa 1920's Card cover Very good condition
This lovely little girl with her bobbed hair, tee-strap shoes, and bonnet veil is adorable. In her hands are the usual rosary and prayer book given to her for First Communion. There's no indication of her name -- the only thing we know for sure is that she was likely a native of Cleveland. The image itself, minus the"frame" and the outer card folder is 3-3/4" x 5-1/2". In the folder it's 6-1/4" x 8-3/4".

1940's Wedding Pictures; Hand Colored and Duotone
3 1940's Wedding Pictures; Hand Colored and Duotone
Cleveland, Ohio Atlas Studio Very Good
These are very interesting - not just because everyone looks so nice and they're sooooooo 40's, but because of the photography. What we have here is a framed duotone under glass and a loose hand-colored photo of the same wedding with the addition of the groom and groomsmen. Both photos were take by Atlas Studio of Cleveland, but, sadly, we don't know who these people are. The duotone is sealed in a leatherette frame which has a stand on the back for display. The inside image is 8"x10" and the frame is 11-1/2"x13". The color one is also 8x10", so it's easy to frame.

New York City Dance Magazine 1977 soft cover Fine Condition
This was an annual calendar designed and published by Dance Magazine for distribution to entities such as the School of Cleveland Ballet which could have their name printed on the final page for their own advertising. Cleveland, Ohio Severance Hall 2006 7sth Anniversary Card cover Very good condition
Very handsome souvenir commemorating Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra. Seventy-five years of fine music is captured in these pages, including blue tinted pictures. There are many people named in the first two pages -- chairs, co-chairs, honorary committee members, gala committee, grand benefactors, benefactors, patrons, and leadership gift donors. There's also a nice section about the orchestra's summer 2006 European tour, plus a retrospective of years past. The Opening Night Gala program is listed along with a bio of Franz Welser-Most, Music Director, and more. Program measures 8-1/2" x 11-1.2" and has 24 pages. Cleveland, Ohio Architects Society of Ohio. Cleveland Chaper American Institute of Architects 1983 Card cover Very good condition
Downtown Cleveland is the coolest place to live these days, but in 1983 when this study came out the suburbs ruled. The Architects Society of Ohio and the Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects challenged Ohio's college students at the University of Cincinnati, Kent State, Miami, and Ohio State to participate in a student design seminar. This booklet is the result. As you can see it's bound with a metal spiral and is clean and nice. Measures 8" x 10-1/2" and has 22 pages. Advertising Blotter Willard Battery Storage (Cleveland, Ohio, 1917)
8 Advertising Blotter Willard Battery Storage (Cleveland, Ohio, 1917)
St. Paul, Minnesota B&B 1917 Near fine condition
The colorful scene of a sportsman in a boat in what looks like a marshy area made me think this blotter might be newer than it is. I got out my magnifying glass and there it was though -- a 1917 date. The Willard Battery Storage company was founded in Cleveland in 1896 by Theodore Willard. It stayed the course al the way through WWII, but finally changed hands in 1952. As you can see, there's another comapany name on the blotter, the St. Thomas Storage Battery Company, but here's why. Under the phone number of St, Thomas it reads, "All Makes of Batteries Repaired. Authorized Willard Service Station for Elgin County.

Annual Circular for the Eighth Year of the Cleveland Academy 1869-70
12 Annual Circular for the Eighth Year of the Cleveland Academy 1869-70
Cleveland, Ohio The Cleveland Academy 1869 Eighth year soft cover Good-plus condition
It's interesting that in the eighth year of the Cleveland Academy the school still sent a circular rather than a catalog to students and would-be students. The other interesting thing is that the senior and middle grade classes were populated with girls only. The junior class and the preparatory class, however, had both girls AND boys, though girls dominated. Example --the junior class had 44 girls and nine boys. Members of the graduating class were Laura Barnett, Helen P. Briggs, Fannie A. Fuller, Nettie Hall, Grace A. Kingsley, Cora Kingsley, Gussie Marchand and Ada W. Simonds. The circular shows a light skim of grayness to top front edge and an indentation to the upper fold from a paper clip. A previous owner wrote 68-9 next to the date which is 1869-70. I held it up to my magnifier and the printed date is right. A very scarce item.

Application for Appointment As Flying Cadet (WWII Documents 1942)
13 Application for Appointment As Flying Cadet (WWII Documents 1942)
U.S. Government 1942 Stapled papers Very good condition
The Flying Cadets are not heard of much today, but in WWII they provided a considerable amount of personnel. Some were even on the ground working as flight engineers, armament officers, meteorologists, and photography officers. After the war, however, the ground jobs were no longer needed. The Flying Cadets, however, came back in good numbers to serve in the Korean War as pilots, navigators and bombardiers. This five page document was submitted by a Clevelander along with three positive referrals from two Cleveland companies -- two different ones from Cleveland Diesel Engine Division of General Motors and one from General Carloading Company Inc.. The four small documents are receipts for paying his premium for VA service life insurance. Three of these are dated 1945 and one is dated 1946. All are clean and nice.

B&O Railroad Miniature Metal Sign and Three B&O Color Postcards
15 B&O Railroad Miniature Metal Sign and Three B&O Color Postcards
Earlton, New York; Washington Audio-Visual Designs & Washington Chapter NRHS 1967 All In fine Condition
This is a unique offering -- a small 3" diameter metal sign for the B&O Railroad, offered in the 1950's as a premium for Post cereals. The collector who owned it paired it with three color postcards, one of which is dated 1967. None have been used or written on and all are in excellent condition. The dated one was published by Washington Chapter NRHS and shows a President Class 4-6-2 pulling the B&O's Ambassador past Ivy City as it leaves Union Station Washington, D.C. Dec. 16, 1951. The other cards show "The Cincinnatian" train No 53 westbound from Toledo, Ohio July, 1956 and the B&O Mikado standing at rest during the final steam passenger run May, 1958 from Cleveland to Halloway, Ohio. We have several more pairings of metal signs and cards.

Blanche Lizzell and the Color Woodcut (Art Exhibition Catalog 2002)
16 Blanche Lizzell and the Color Woodcut (Art Exhibition Catalog 2002)
Boston, Mass. MFA Publications 2002 soft cover Good-plus
Wow -- what a beautiful catalog this is! The color woodcuts are just charming and the catalog is very clean and mostly very, very nice. But it looks as though someone set a wet glass on it inside the cover. (See second photo) Consequently there are some light pink spots to reverse side of cover and a slight bit of crinkliness to the area where the glass was, though I have pressed it much flatter in the book press and it covers just a few pages at front. The rest is pristine and no images are involved. The good news about this is the price! I reduced it considerably. Blanche Lazell (1878-1956) was a printmaker, painter and designer, but she is best known for her white line woodcut technique based on the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print. Catalog measures 8-1/2x9-1/2" and has 96 pages which include two essays. Exhibit was shown in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Cleveland Museum of Art and Elvehjem Museum in Madison, Wisconsin.

17 Boys Grown Tall; A Story of American Initiative (50 Cleveland Leaders, 1944)
Cleveland, Ohio The Plain Dealer 1944 Hard Cover Very good
This book is not seen as often as you would think. I had one ten years ago and just now got this one. It was rather inexpensively put together, but it's a genealogical gold mine with fifty biographies of Clevelanders of the day. It's comprised of a group of articles reprinted in book form. They were originally written for the Sunday Cleveland Plain Dealer and appeared throughout March, April and May, 1944. Surnames included are: Black Cary, Case, Champion, Chapin, Codrington, Coe, Collens, Cox, Crawford, Dunn, Eaton, Eide, Emerson, Frackleton, Gerhauser, Girdler, Gund, Harshaw, Holliday, Hood, Hoyt, Humphrey, Johnson, Joyce, Klumph, Kulas, Ladds, Leece, Lewman, Lincoln, Martin, Mather, McCrea, McIntyre, Ogelbay, Otis, Reedall, Rivitz, Rogers, Rossiter, Sears, Smith, Stilwell, Weatherhead, Weaver, White, Woodruff and Wysor. Book measures 7"x10" and has 119 pages bound with a plastic comb. There's a drawing for each subject and lots of anecdotes.

Cabinet Card Baby in Antique Chair Broadway Photo Co. Cleveland, Ohio
20 Cabinet Card Baby in Antique Chair Broadway Photo Co. Cleveland, Ohio
Cleveland, Ohio Broadway Photo Company turn of the 20th century Cabinet card Very good
Cute little person in a very big chair. May be a rocking chair. There are no names on the back and no dates, so I'm guessing this picture was taken around the turn of the 20th century. The Broadway Photo Co. was located at 1150 Broadway, Cleveland, Ohio, but research hit a dead end from the start. The card measures 4-1/4"x6-1/2" and is very nice and clean with no wear to edges
