1 "This Is the Draped Dress" Matted Best & Co. Ad Woman's Home Companion 1922
Woman's Home Companion Magazine 1922 Very Good
I am not usually attracted to most of the matted and/or framed advertising available, but this one caught my eye. The monotone art is not only elegant, but evocative of the Jazz Age -- the world of Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald and the artistic women of the Left Bank. As indicated on the reverse side, the image comes from the Picture Section of Woman's Home Companion magazine July, 1922. Both it and its mat are very clean. The art is the creation of John La Gatta (1894-1977), an illustrator best remembered for his work featuring women. The overall size with mat is 12"x13" while the image itself is 9"x9-3/4"

1930 Liberty Magazine Calendar (1973 REPRINT Leslie Thrasher Art)
2 1930 Liberty Magazine Calendar (1973 REPRINT Leslie Thrasher Art)
Coshocton, Ohio Liberty Library Corporation 1973 soft cover Very good
I wish this were the original calendar from 1930, but it's very obvious that it's not given the advertising info on the front for Akron Industrial Metals Co. But it's still very cute and even threw recipients a bone since 1975 and 1930 shared common dates which meant it could actually be used. Fortunately it was not used, or all the pages may have been discarded. Every month shows a bright color image featuring cute kids rendered by Leslie Trhasher and original advertising on the back. The calendar measures 7"x12-1/2" and has a metal hanger at the top. Only fault is a small stain over the "y" in Liberty on the front.

3 75th Anniversary Gala Program Severance Hall, September 30, 2006 (Cleveland, Ohio)
Cleveland, Ohio Severance Hall 2006 7sth Anniversary Card cover Very good condition
Very handsome souvenir commemorating Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra. Seventy-five years of fine music is captured in these pages, including blue tinted pictures. There are many people named in the first two pages -- chairs, co-chairs, honorary committee members, gala committee, grand benefactors, benefactors, patrons, and leadership gift donors. There's also a nice section about the orchestra's summer 2006 European tour, plus a retrospective of years past. The Opening Night Gala program is listed along with a bio of Franz Welser-Most, Music Director, and more. Program measures 8-1/2" x 11-1.2" and has 24 pages. Only fault is a small bit of scratching to lower back corner next to spine. Overall quite lovely and worth keeping.

Advertising Blotter Willard Battery Storage (Cleveland, Ohio, 1917)
5 Advertising Blotter Willard Battery Storage (Cleveland, Ohio, 1917)
St. Paul, Minnesota B&B 1917 Near fine condition
The colorful scene of a sportsman in a boat in what looks like a marshy area made me think this blotter might be newer than it is. I got out my magnifying glass and there it was though -- a 1917 date. The Willard Battery Storage company was founded in Cleveland in 1896 by Theodore Willard. It stayed the course al the way through WWII, but finally changed hands in 1952. As you can see, there's another comapany name on the blotter, the St. Thomas Storage Battery Company, but here's why. Under the phone number of St, Thomas it reads, "All Makes of Batteries Repaired. Authorized Willard Service Station for Elgin County.

The book is over-sized at 8-1/2"x 11" and has 80 pages. Minor small horizontal creases to spine, likely endemic to the publishing process, but otherwise clean and tightly bound. American Photography, November 1932
9 American Photography, November 1932
Boston, MA American Photographic Publishing Co. 1933 Vol. XXVII, No. 11 soft cover Very good
This is a wonderful look at photographic history. It's not a magazine for the casual Kodak owner, but a serious look at photographic technology as it was in 1933. Articles cover exposure and development; photographic Christmas cards with hand-drawn borders; development with paraphenylenediamine; aerial photography with a rebuilt reflecting camera; the photographic translation of color into monochrome; telephoto pictures and infra red plates and much more. Lots to read. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Many ads too for photographic equipment. Magazine is clean and tightly bound. Measures 7" x 9-3/4". Only fault is light toning to back cover. See last photo.

Atkins Saws In The Home & Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads (Vintage Advertising Brochures from E.C. Atkins & Company)
12 Atkins Saws In The Home & Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads (Vintage Advertising Brochures from E.C. Atkins & Company)
Indianapolis Atkins Saw Company No date
Though some would argue that Diston Saws, made in Philadelphia, were the finest handtools of the 19th and early 20th centuries, others would rank products made by the E.C. Atkins Co. of Indianapolis right up there with the best of them. This wonderful brochure entitled Atkins Saws in the Home gets the point across with both its cover graphic of a smiling man using a hand saw and this snappy copy: "Mr. Happy Man says a saw that 'chews' may cost less but the saw to choose is an Atkins. The Finest On Earth." Though the trifold brochure is undated, it appears to be from the 20's or 30's. It measures 4x9" folded, 12" by 9" when opened and 12x18" when extended to full size. The graphics of the full extended page are fabulous --wonderful images of the various saws produced by the company in black and white against a light grey background banded in the same blue as front cover.Copy includes Hints for the Home Workshop, Useful Facts & Figures, How To Care For A Good Saw, plus info on the company and its motto -- "For the man who does things." We will also include a smaller brochure advertising Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads booklet printed with the name Waco Tool Works of Chicago. This, too, is a trifold, but measures just 3-1/2" x6" closed. Both are in very good condition with just a small bit of soiling to outer fold of larger brochure and a speck of paper loss at a couple corners when fully extending (see photo). Goof gift for an antique tool collector.

Ayer's American Almanac for the Use of Farmers, Planters, Mechanics, Mariners and All Families 1862
14 Ayer's American Almanac for the Use of Farmers, Planters, Mechanics, Mariners and All Families 1862
Lowell, Massachusetts Dr. J.C. Ayer & Co. 1862 soft cover very good
I've had a bunch of Ayer's almanacs over the years, but this is the oldest one I'vw ever had, or even seen. Other than a little light soiling to yellow cover it's in excellent condition. The good doctor had this to say about it: "Calculated for the four great Meridians of the Country, and consequently msy be relied on as accurate for every Place in the United States and British Provinces of North America. Also, giving Medical Counsel which may be relied on for the Treatment and Cure of the afflicting Diseases that prevail within the latitudes of the American States. Baker Lake Prints 1988 (Canadian Indigenous Art)
15 Baker Lake Prints 1988 (Canadian Indigenous Art)
Baker Lake, Ottawa, Canada Canadian Arctic Producers 1988 0920234879 / 9780920234877 Card cover Very good condition
This is an interesting booklet about Canadian indigenous art from the Baker Lake area of Ottawa. It began with the Sanavik co-operative which endeavored to create a print program. Unfortunately it didn't catch fire right away, so instead of producing huge numbers of art prints they decided to choose carefully and confine each to a limited edition of no more than 50 copies. The booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 39 pristine pages. The only fault is some light sunning to spine. There are real photographs of the area and its people, both black and white aand color art, and photos of the artists at work.

Bathrooms Kitchens and Heating After
17 Bathrooms Kitchens and Heating After "V" Day By Crane Co. (1940's Relevant Ephemnera Laid-in)
Chicago, Illinois Crane Company 1940's Soft cover Fine condition
This is more dream book than working catalog because it was printed while WWII raged on. The Crane Company knew there would be no building or remodeling until after Victory Day, but they also knew that people had stockpiled lots of war bonds for later. It was a good move because it sparked both creativity and interest while consumers waited. The booklet is filled with kitchens, baths, and heating and plumbing items. It measures 8-1/4" x 11" and has 21 colorful pages with only a few in black and white. Also laid-in is a booklet of the same size which shows many choices in various categories. Each item is drawn and has a little box to check your favorites. The previous owner has checked them in pencil, but I left it because it's fun to see what items appealed. You can erase if desired.

Be An Artist At the Gas Range; Successful Recipes by the Mystery Chef (1936)
18 Be An Artist At the Gas Range; Successful Recipes by the Mystery Chef (1936)
Longman, Green & Co. 1936 soft cover Very Good
If ever a cover screamed 1930'as this one has to be it -- what a strong graphic, both front and back! The booklet was offered in bookstores by Longman, Green who published books by the Mystery Chef -- who, incidentally, lived quite well given the photo at the back of the booklet of his New York living room! But that's a disgression -- the booklet also proved to be, as this one was, an advertising vehicle for the local gas company. It measures 5"x8" and has 96 pristine pages of recipes which are viable in today's kitchen.

Billy Rose's Aquacade New York World's Fair 1940
19 Billy Rose's Aquacade New York World's Fair 1940
The Gruen Watch Co. 1940 soft cover
Wow -- what a graphic! I'd have picked it up just for that, but it's also a souvenir from the 1940 World's Fair. Billy Rose's Aquacade was a glamorous show featuring gorgeous people, both men and women -- sort of a Ziegfield follies in water, though he referred to it as a water ballet. The funny part is that Rose endorsed his ads. The one I like best says (in Rose's own words), "Just taste one -- you'll see why I'm proud to have SPAMWICHES served at the Aquacade." Now THAT's what you'd call glam for sure! :-) Measuras 9"x12" and has 32 pages and three full page color ads -- Coke, Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, and Chesterfield cigarettes.
