1 "There's A Reason"; A Journey Through the Factories That Make Postum, Grape Nuts and Post Toasties (post-1914)
Battle Creek, Michigan Postum Cereal Company After 1914 Hard Cover Good-plus No Dustjacket as issued
This is an amazing little book published after the death of C.W. Post, the founder of the Postum Cereal Company which produced Grape Nuts and Post Toasties as well as the coffee substitute, Postum. From 1905 until his death in 1914 C.W. sued, was sued, and gained a reputation as a charlatan who worked overtime making bogus health claims against caffeine. He also came up with what was called a mysterious slogan for his breakfast beverage "There's a reason ...", thus the title of the book. Great pictures abound in here -- the ones at the front in color show such things at Post's private office. Most photos, however, are of the plant and people at work making the products with help from mighty machinery. Book measures 7-1/2" x 9" and has 47 pages. It's tightly bound with clean pages and no writing. Faults are exterior -- a few little stains and a few tiny spots of edge wear to the green border around the cover picture. Overall quite good. It's puffery of course, but fun puffery!

New York Parke-Bernet Galleries Inc. 1950 March 9, 1950 Card cover Very good condition
Today's auction catalogs look like magazines in full color. I love them, but I also like these simpler ones. The auction took place on March 9, 1950 due to the death of Edwin M. Berolzheier in 1949. At this point the collection was owned by Mrs. Edwin M. Berol. The catlaog measures 6-1/4" x 9-1/2" with 48 pages and 267 objects including the itemz mentioned.but also Persian and other antique textiles, pottery and bronzes. There are descriptions for each and within them are black and white photogrpahs.

Arthur's Illustrated Home Magazine (May, 1875)
4 Arthur's Illustrated Home Magazine (May, 1875)
Philadelphia Timothy Shay Arthur 1875 No. 5 Volume XLIII soft cover Very Good
Though not as well known as Godey's, Arthur's magazine was a hit in its day. This issue is from May,1875 and is clean and tightly bound. There is a small loss of paper at the bottom of the spine and a light stain from moisture to the bottom front corner and a light one also to bottom corner at a few pages in the back. Several pages of fashions are found at the front of the magazine, but Arthur's seemed to feel its readership was worthy of more intellectual material as well -- the first article is about South Wales. There's also articles about books and libraries, the island of Philae, burrowing bees, gardening, and the the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. Also includes stories and poems. Ads are confined to the back, but one full page one shows an ad for an early book club offered by the magazine's publisher. The magazine was launched in 1852 by Timothy Shay Arthur of Philadelphia who remained its editor and publisher until his death in 1885. After that it stayed around a few years before slipping away into the annals of time.

Catholic Funeral Memorial Book Unused in Original Box
5 Catholic Funeral Memorial Book Unused in Original Box
Independence Funeral Home Vodargka Funeral Home No date Hard cover Fine condition in Very Good Box
Very pretty cover and two more paintings inside. The book has not been used and is very nice in its original white box. The book is without defect and the box nearly so. There are a couple small white spots on the white background which I almost missed. Otherwise it's a clean, sturdy box. The book measures 7-1/2" x 10" and is clean and bright inside and out. The binding is that of a ring binder that we used to take to school. The book has spaces for name, date and place of birth, age, and date of death. There's also room for photos, funeral notes, the names of officiants, music, the rituals at the cemetery, plus a page for a list of family and friends, floral offerings, comments from the bereaved, life memories, obituaries and more. VERY nice.

Fabulous Finocchio's Night Club San Francisco (Circa 1950's Two Brochures)
7 Fabulous Finocchio's Night Club San Francisco (Circa 1950's Two Brochures)
San Francisco Finocchio's Night Club No date. Circa 1950's - early 60's card covers Very good
Here we have two brochures from Finocchio's, a popular club which was located in San Francisco. It began as a speakeasy during Prohibition, then morphed into a club with lavish shows featuring female impersonators once it was legal to serve alcohol again. The green and white brochure measures 6" x 7-1/4" and opens to three times that size showing individual performer pictures. It was designed to be mailed as a souvenir, but it was not. The smaller brochure measures 4" x 7-1/2" and opens to twice that. This one shows drink prices on the reverse side. Scotch was $1.15 and bourbon, gin, vodka, rum and cordials were $1.10, though premium brands required an additional $1.15. Both are clean and attractive. The club closed in the late 90's after the death of the owner.

8 Frank Lloyd Wright A Modern Aesthetic June 6 to July 15, 1986 (The Darwin D. Martin House)
Chicago, Illinois Struve Gallery 1986 card cover Very Good Condition
This is a beautiful catalog in very good condition. It should, however, have a white paper dustwrapper printed with the exact design on the cover of the booklet itself. It's still very attractive with no defect of note. The Darwin D. Marvin house was built in Buffalo, New York in 1903-1904 and was considered the house that truly showed Wright's genius. Wright was friends with the owners until the death of Darwin Martin in 1935. Until then he designed furniture, lighting fixtures and even dresses for Mrs. Martin. He also consulted on the couple's collection of Japanese prints and ceramics. This booklet measures 8" x 11" and is illustrated handsomely with photos of the stained glass windows and the furniture.

England Marshall-Cavendish 1974 soft cover Fine Condition
Beautiful, crisp magazines very gently kept. No defect of note. These were published in a series of 112 weekly issues of which I have the first 16. They measure 8-1/2"x11" and each is paginated from the previous magazine bringing the total of these 16 to 464 pages. There are no ads, but lots of illustration primarily in full color. Content is presented encyclopedia style so that most topics appear alphabetcally. These range from A to C.. However, each issue also has a major story that does not follow the encyclopedia format. These include life after death, Black Magic and witchcraft; posession and trance, religions of the east and west, magic and mysticism, the meaning of myth, the state of physical research at the time of writing, the divine king and dying God; ritual magic, cannibalism, Buddhism, Cabala, cave art, and the Celts. Saengerfest Program June 22-24,1927 Cleveland Public Auditorium (HUGE German-American Musical Event German and English text)
14 Saengerfest Program June 22-24,1927 Cleveland Public Auditorium (HUGE German-American Musical Event German and English text)
Cleveland, Ohio 1927 soft cover Good-plus
This is a hefty, significant program -- more book than booklet! But the event was so enormous it's worthy of the paper used to print it. Saengerfest was a national song festival which consisted of five concerts held over three days to accommodate the HUGE crowds. Twenty-six trains were charted just to bring in the thousands of PARTICIPANTS. The Cleveland schools also contributed singers. The event was also a commemoration of the centenary of the death of Beethoven. The program measures 7-3/4" x 10-1/4" and is very tightly bound with complete spine strip. Onlt fault is light some soiling to cover front and back. It has been cleaned by me, but it proved impervious. Pages are pristine. The text is in both GERMAN AND ENGLISH and is illustrated with photographs. Pages are not numbered but the program measures almost a half inch thick. 15 Sotheby's Auction The Estate of Jacqueliine Kennedy Onassis April 23-26, 1996
New York, New York Sotheby's 1996 Card cover Very good condition
This is a large and beautiful auction catalog which was published after Jackie's death. The book is clean and nice, but it does have a couple defects. I don't know if the absentee form was loose, or not, but if the previous owner put it in it's with white tape on one side. The only other problem is that the form is a small bit bigger than the other pages. The catalog shows many lovely photographs with Jackie and JFK, with their children, and their family. There is biographical info and pages of lovely rooms and many stunning items -- American decorative arts and furniture; American paintings, antiquities, books and manuscripts, contemporary art, European furniture, gneral fine arts, Impressionist paintings, Indian and SE Asian art, jewelry, fashion, 19th century European paintings, Old Master paintings, porcelain, prints, rugs and carpet, Russian icons and art; and silver. The catalog measures 9" x 11-1/2" and includes all 1195 items. P.S. I forgot that there is a crease on the spine, likely because of the huge number of pages. The crease in no ways inmpinges on the spine.

There are many voices here that you will recognize -- Theodore Dreiser, Eugene O'Neill, Clarence Darrow, Liam O'Flaherty, Louis Untermeyer, Sean O'Casey, Booth Tarkington, and more. Closed the papers measures 9" x 11-1/2". Only volume I shows some toning to front pages. NOTE -- this is not the political magazine of the same name.

The Family Circle Magazine 7 Issues 1938
17 The Family Circle Magazine 7 Issues 1938
Newark, New Jersey The Family Circle Inc. 1938 soft cover Very Good
Seven issues of Family Circle magazine which was much thinner in the old days than now but also a weekly rather than a monthly. They're not consecutive, but all are from January, February and March, 1938. The dates are Jan. 14, Jan. 21, Feb. 11, Feb 18,Feb. 25, March 4, and March 11. Articles could be about anything, but here's some noteworthy examples: William Powell and Loretta Young, a huge New York City emporium of both collectibles and junk called Bob's Swap and Shop, a master blacksmith, people killed seeking treasure, the National Parachute Jumpers Association, a New York City man who groomed women for marriage, Broadway, and llamas. Each issue also has a short story and lots of recipes. The magazines are printed on newsprint so there's some toning, but all are clean and tightly bound. They measure 8-1/2x11-1/2". NOTE: Overseas orders subject to a higher cost than stated due to weight. Use the contact button and provide your destination and I will quote actual cost for your consideration.

The Musical News: A Monthly Journal Devoted to Bands, Orchestras and Music In General (May 1892)
19 The Musical News: A Monthly Journal Devoted to Bands, Orchestras and Music In General (May 1892)
Reading, Pennsylvania No Authors or Editor Named 1892 Vol.II, No. 6 soft cover Good condition
This was a small independent publication, issues of which are very hard to find. I've had it a long time, but it just surfaced today in one of my storage closets. There are short articles about arranging a programme; the death of Francesco Lamperti, the Italian singer; ease in violin playing; and others. But I do think the ads are what steal the show! Magazine is clean and tightly bound, but does show some toning to the back cover (see photo) and a flat vertical crease, likely from having been in a mailbox. I have ironed it flat and put it in the bookpress. Magazine measures 7" x 10" and has 18 pages. The only ad that isn't musical is the one at the bottom of the front cover for the Neversink Mountain Hotel in Reading, Pennsylvania, "a magnificent new resort just compete.'

The Theosophical Quarterly Vol. XXXV (Full run) 1937-38
20 The Theosophical Quarterly Vol. XXXV (Full run) 1937-38
New York The Theosophical Society 1937-38 soft cover Very Good to Good
The Theosophical Quarterly Volume XXXV, Nos. 137,138,139,140; Published in 1937-38. Full set in good, clean condition with only one issue showing a fault which is a small bit of chipping to upper front corner of the cover just above the No. 140 on one issue. All magazines have clean pages made from very nice rag paper with no writing and no creases. The Theosophical Society was founded by Madame Helena Blavatsky, the first Russian woman to be naturalized as an American citizen. She began the group in 1875 with other like-minded friends and eventually moved to India where she started yet another branch. By the 1930's the society was going strong, despite some splintering after Madame Blavatsky's death in 1891. In fact, it was even popular in Ireland. Devotees of James Joyce's novel, Finnegan's Wake, will recognize Theosophical Society influences in the book. Among the topics here are cyclic laws in biology, prayer wheels, the importance of having a life purpose, psychic and noetic action, and a two-part series on Blavatsky herself. Not often seen in a full run.
