A Study for the Exchange Hotel Sandusky, Ohio (1980)
1 A Study for the Exchange Hotel Sandusky, Ohio (1980)
Cleveland, Ohio Dalton, van Dijk, Johnson & Partners, Architects 1980 Card cover, spiral binding Very good condition
Very nice clean, tightly bound, document bound with a plastic spiral which is still holding well. Booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" with 24 pages and both diagrams and photographs. The Exchange Hotel was the oldest standing brick structure at the time of the rennovation. it had deteriorated quite a bit after it became a rooming house and a reestaurant/night club. In July of 1977 a raging fire damaged it extensively. It's a very interesting report sprinkled with anecdotes such as Charles Dickens once checked in!

Serial Publications; Essential Parts of the 19th Century Imagination (Robert H. Jackson Collection 1996)
3 Serial Publications; Essential Parts of the 19th Century Imagination (Robert H. Jackson Collection 1996)
New York The Grolier Club 1996 soft cover Fine
Crisp, as new booklet with very handsome card laid-in which says, "With Compliments, Robert H. Jackson. Measures 6"x9" and has 42 pages. The Grolier Society, which published it, is an organization of book collectors, so this exhibit is all about books, specifically books which first were published in magazines in installments. This was a popular occurrence -- Louisa May Alcott did it, Dickens did it, and do did many others. The excitement of it was the wait and the fact that the author had not yet written the entire thing yet. An essay discusses this at the front of the booklet followed by commentary on the items exhibited.

Sketches by Boz, Charles Dickens; Goodall's Household Library 1885 (In Custom Made Box)
4 Sketches by Boz, Charles Dickens; Goodall's Household Library 1885 (In Custom Made Box)
Leeds, England Goodall, Backhouse & Co. 1885 Dickens, Charles Second Limited Edition soft cover Very Good in Very Good Box
This is a most unusual find, a copy of the Goodall Library edition of Charles Dickens' first published work which made its debut (in hard cover) in the 1830's. This is the second Goodall (British company) unabridged printing of 250,000 soft cover copies in 1895. It sounds like a lot -- and it is -- but it's not easy to find a copy, as it was ephemeral by nature. Whoever owned this one valued it enough to have a special box made to protect it -- and protect it it did. The booklet has a sewn binding which is tight and effective and its pages and cover are clean, showing only a tiny bit of foxing to lower edge and two small chips to the same area/ As you can see from the cover, it was used as an advertising vehicle. Look around the margins at front and you will see references to custard powder, egg powder, and blancmange powder. The book measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and has 106 dense pages, plus a couple more pages of advertising. The box is in very nice condition.

Crisp, as new gift book in a pristine box. Absolutely gorgeous! I love old gift books and books in boxes, so to find such a perfect one was a thrill. Text is a collection of short poems by such authors as Dickens, Whittier, Shakespeare, Phillip Brooks (author of Silent Night), Eugene Field and many more. Would make a lovely gift.

8 Julie Mitchell et al A Christmas Garland
Norwalk, Connecticut the C.R. Gibson Company 1991 0837820693 / 9780837820699 Hard cover and in a Box Very good 6 Kathy Orr
This book is so pretty in its matching box. It's clean and bright with no names or writing. The only defect is one page which is almost coming out of the binding. Fortunately, I have archival tape which mended it perfectly on both sides with no problem in closing the book. Even the tape is almost iivisible. I have two photos of them. The book combines the work of several well known authors -- George Eliot, Shakepeare, Charles Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, William Thackeray, Clement C. Moore, Phillip Brooks, Lewis Carroll and more. Theres also the story of the little girl named Virginia who asked the New York Sun to find out if Santa Claus is real. Thi is a beautiful gift book for both chldren and adults.
