Charm: The Magazine for Women Who Work August, 1952
2 Charm: The Magazine for Women Who Work August, 1952
Street & Smith Publications 1952 August 1952 soft cover Good-plus
Charm is not a magazine you see too much, probably because there were fewer women in the workplace in 1952. I wasn't really too surprised that work played a small role in the magazine's content other than the clothes one wore to the office. But -- wow! -- what sophisticated clothes these were. I always think of poodle skirts and Donna Reed shirtwaists when I think of the 50's, but not for these women. High fashion! The other topics include the predictable -- child care and what to fix for dinner. But if you're a fashion junkie, this one is fabulous! Clean and tightly bound with a few creases to cover. Pages pristine.

Matson Lines Mardi Gras Dinner Menu (February 15, 1968)
4 Matson Lines Mardi Gras Dinner Menu (February 15, 1968)
Honolulu, Hawaii Matson Lines 1968 Card cover
A beautiful painting of a scene in Fiji is perfect for the Matson Lines which was located in Hawaii. Mostly they carried cargo, but they also had passenger liners which went From L.A. and San Francisco to Hawaii, to other exotic islands, and even as far as Australia and New Zealand. But along came a spike in modern air travel and Matson's liners were making fewer forays. By 1970 they were done. The liner for which this menu derived was the S.S. Lurline. The menu took a southern slant with Carnival lobster cocktail, jumbo prawns a la Creole, spouther fired breast of chicken, southern ambrosia and Dixie chocolate cake. Menu measures 9" x 12".

Menu Colonial Hotel, Cleveland Ohio (December 25, 1906)
5 Menu Colonial Hotel, Cleveland Ohio (December 25, 1906)
Cleveland, Ohio Colonial Hotel 1906 Card cover Good condition
The Colonial Hotel was a fixture of downtown Cleveland from 1900 to 1929. This menu was for the hotel's 1908 Christmas dinner. The light blue cover shows pale stains, a few light spots, and a few scratches, but overall isn't too bad. The original ribbon was untied when I got it, but when I tried to fix it the ribbon tore in my hands like paper. Instead I used a heavy vintage satin ribbon in white. I also used a piece of archival tape to repair the split on the front cover. It'beneath the menu part, so you can't see it all. On then to the dinner --That Christmas the hotel offered celery, olives and salted nuts for an appetizer; bisque of terappin or consomme Delmonico; Planked Roe Shad Moderne or Lobster Newport en Cocotte; Filet Mignon tortini or Supreme of Chicken Parisian; Cardinal Punch, roast cranberry sauce with asparagus, spinach, new potatoes in cream, and lettuce and tomato salad. Desserts included Coupe St. Jacques or Biscuit Glace, assorted cake, fruit, Roquefort or American cheese and coffee. Menus from the Colonial are not often found. This one measures 5-1/4" 8-1/2".

Menu Wagon Wheel Waikiki's Unique Garden Restaruant (1945)
6 Menu Wagon Wheel Waikiki's Unique Garden Restaruant (1945)
Waikiki, Hawaii Wagon Wheel Restaurant 1945 Card cover Good condition
This restaurant has long been closed, but it was managed by Sally Close (how ironic) in 1945. Oddly, the food could be served in the Midwest with the exception of alligator pears and papaya. Roast leg of lamb with guava jelly was $1.35, one of the two most expensive entrees on the list. There doesn't seem to be a wine list even though it's a dinner menu. Dinner, however, was served from noon to 8:30 p.m.The menu needed some TLC, so I repaired three tears on the reverse side. The menu itself had been stapled badly so that part of it hung out the side. So I took off the staple, ironed the cresae and restabled. A nice collectible of Hawaii past.

Menus Carnival The
7 Menus Carnival The "Fun Ships"
No location stated Carnival Ships No date Card cover Very good condition
The blue folder seen in the first photo is a menu. What's interesting about it is the five additional menus inside hich have no covers. They're plain front and back with the menu printed inside of each. The blue one is a luncheon menu, the others dinner menus, each with a specific theme -- American night, Pacific night, French night, Spanish night and Italian night. All are clean and nice. The only fault is minor edge wear to the blue one.

Old Stone Church Public Square Cleveland, Ohio 1820-1970
8 Old Stone Church Public Square Cleveland, Ohio 1820-1970
Cleveland, Ohio Old Stone Church 1970 soft cover Very Good condition
Here's another Cleveland item which I've never had before! Lately that's been happening quite a bit. Anyway, this one is very clean and nice with just a small bit of toning to edges. The cross on the front is a cut-out and the blue color is coming from the art inside. It's a painting and is tipped-in rather than having been printed on the page. The booklet measures 8"x10" and has 16 pages. Old Stone church is Presbyterian and very lovely, the backdrop for many weddings. Text consists of a formal resolution from both the Ohio Senate and the city of Cleveland commemorating the anniversary, a Highlight History spanning 1820-1970 and info on Jesse Owens who was speaking at the Church's dinner. Also names prominent people in the church and its missionaries. Helpful for genealogy. (OH2)

Real Photo Postcard Taylor Inn Lodi, Ohio 1910
10 Real Photo Postcard Taylor Inn Lodi, Ohio 1910
New York The Rotograph Company 1910 Good-plus
I have had many Taylor Inn cards over the years, but never this one. Not only is it a real photo (and is even marked as such), but it also shows a woman walking on the street trailing a fancy dress in her wake -- which is rather surprising given that Lodi was a small agrcultural town. The two appendages in the front to the right of the awning that says DRUGS (which I don't recall seeing before either) are two awninged bays fitted with masses of flowers in boxes. The card is postmarked Sept, 24, 1910 and was sent to Mrs. B. Kennedy of Summit Street, Akron, Ohio. The message reads, "Another chicken dinner. Wish you were here too. Lottie. 9/24/10." Card will arrive in a plastic sleeve.

Cleveland, Ohio Case School of Applied Science 1931 Card cover Fine
This 25th college reunion souvenir is both beautiful and beautifully kept. It also includes a sepia toned photograph taken at the dinner which measures 8"x10" and has no names or writing on the back. The souvenir itself is a booklet which measures 8-1/2"x11" and is covered with a very nice textural paper. Inside is a class picture from graduation, followed by the complete class roster with biographical info on each grad, a few then and now photos, and a program for the two day event held May 26-27, 1931 at the Park Lane Villa located in Cleveland at the corner of Park Lane and East 105th Street. Along with all of this is a letter to alums, a notice of change of venue, and a statement of costs for the party. The only fault is a bit of toning to one small area at top margin of first page. If you would like me to see if someone is listed on the class roster please use the contact button and I will gladly look it up for you. Nice family keepsake!

14 The Woolpack Hotel, Warwick, England (early 1900's)
Warwick, england The Woolpack Hotel circa early 1900's soft cover Very good
This is very small travel booklet about an historic hotel which is no longer in service. The booklet measures 4' tall and 5" wide with a very simple khaki colored cover. There is no date inside, but an ad at back indicates that cars could be rented -- see photo of the ad, as it dates the booklet to the early part of the 20th century. Ephemera from this hotel seems hard to find, but here we have a little gem. There are photographs throughout and information on amenities such as a bath in the room, a fire for the evening, keeping a dog, and various types of meals. The hotel provided breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner snd cold supper.

Godey's Lady's Book June, 1872 (three-fold-outs), hale, Mrs. Sarah J., Editor
18 hale, Mrs. Sarah J., Editor Godey's Lady's Book June, 1872 (three-fold-outs)
Philadelphia L.A. Godey 1872 Vol. LXXXIV, No. 504 soft cover Good
Godey was the final word on fashion in its day. At the time this specific issue came out the company had been publishing it for 42 years! I've had several Godey's but I don't recall ever seeing so many fold-outs in a single issue. Here we have three -- the full color fashion plate which is especially pretty, a drawing of a dinner party, and a black and white fashion accessory page which is two-sided -- more pretty things on the reverse. One of the most interesting articles is about the health dangers of binding corsets too tightly. The magazine is clean and tightly bound :-), but as you can see from the photos, the yapped edges have been clipped off the cover which is not uncommon given how easily they tear due to the overhang. The magazine measures 6-1/2"x10".
