Phoenix Flame Magazines Sparks 1-7; Phoenix Metal Cap Company 1949, Hal Higden
10 Hal Higden Phoenix Flame Magazines Sparks 1-7; Phoenix Metal Cap Company 1949
Chicago, Illinois Phoenix Metal Cap Company 1949 Card covers Very good condition Elmer Jacobs
This is the most unique pairing of art and bottle caps ever seen. The Phoenix Metal Cap Company of Chicago established it as a house organ with info on the caps, but also with art and literature. They even had a poetry editor! I bought them seven years ago and finally decided to let someone else enjoy them. They're very beautiful magazines published as the Period of Art series. It includes Sparks 1-7, the series in its entirety. The magazine covers are bold and graphic designed and made by Elmer Jacobs, a national award winner for his art. The Phoenix Flames are unique and quirky juxtaposition of advertising art (products for which the company designed caps) and fine art sprinkled with poetry, humor and history. Magazine measures 8-1/2"x11" with each issue featuring a different period of art history. In chronological order these periods are: Paleolithic, Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Oriental, Mayan, Renaisscance and 19th Century.

Beautifully kept magazine with a lovely cover touched with color. This is a particularly good issue, as there is an article about Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of the famous novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, in her 85th year. There's a lot to read here and ideas for Egyptian embroidery designs, as well as an article about running a big hotel and more. Great ads too, especially for bicycles, as this was the era when everyone wanted one. Magazine measures 11-1/2" x 16-1/2". 32 pages. Pristine inside and out. SHIPS IN THE U.S. for $2.

The Journal of the Walters Art Gallery 1939, Miner, Dorothy E.; Grancsay, Stephen V.
14 Miner, Dorothy E.; Grancsay, Stephen V. The Journal of the Walters Art Gallery 1939
Baltimore, Maryland Walters Art Gallery 1939 soft cover Very good
I am so excited to have found a few of these journals, as the editor is Dorothy Miner who was a noted scholar on medieval illuminated manuscripts, taught by none other than the great Belle Da Costa Greene who acquired and maintained J. Pierpont Morgan's exquisite library. The magazine is Volume II, but it's a stand alone. All it means is it's the first of four issues of the year. The journal measures 9"x 11-1/4" and has 109 pages printed on quality coated paper. It's tightly bound and very clean with just some light foxing to first and last pages as typical. It's beautifully illustrated with black and white photographs and covers numerous topics including, Alberto Socio and his Group, the Legend of Paris and Helen, an Egyptian Stela of the Early 18th Dynasty, Notes on Enamels by Pierre Raymond, a Gothic ivory mirror case and more. The only author I recognized is Stephen V. Grancsay, who headed the Arms and Armor Collection of the New York Metropolitan Museum. His article is titled "Carved Gunstocks by Johann Michael Maucher".

15 Paque, Joan Michaels Design Principles and Fiber Techniques Advanced and Experiemental (1973 SIGNED)
Shorewood, Wisconsin Self-published 1973 Card cover, Spiral bound Very good condition
Very nicely kept manual which shows a totally intact spiral comb binding and pristine pages throughout. The author/artist SIGNED it thus, "Simone, continued success in all you do. Hope I see you again. Joan Michaels-Paque Cleveland, 1974." The recipient stamped her name and address on the title page (see photo). This is an incredible work covering many different techniques, so many that I can't list them all. But here's a sampling -- single strand plaited edge, double ridge hitching, three strand crown sinnet, Peruvian braid, New Zealand Maori technique, pin weaving, Dieppe net ground, gauzes, twining with variations, knitted stitches in basketry and Egyptian tapestry knot. Virginia Beach, Virginia A.R.E. Press 1975 soft cover Very Good
Very clean booklet with no names or writing and a very attractive cover graphic. Other than a bit of toning to spine area, this booklet is clean as a whistle. One tends to think of Edgar Cayce in terms of health and Christianity, but these readings focus solely on the mysteries of Egypt and especially the story of Ra Ta.Ythe booklet measures 5-1/4"x8-1/2" and has 56 pages. Illustrated sparsely with drawings, black and white photo and map.
