1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
1 1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
Unknown Location Johnson and Ward circa 1863 later printing
The 1862 map of the territories of Washington and Oregon is a lovely thing with its hand coloring and handsome double face font for lettering. If you look in the lower corner you see the number 57 which indicates it was the 57th plate in Alvin J. Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas published originally by Johnson and Browning in 1862. The question is when was this particular one printed? It states on the map that the publisher was Johnston and Ward which means it's around 1863, as that's the year the company's name changed from Johnson and Browning to Johnson and Ward. The map was made at the start of the Civil War with much land especially in eastern Oregon not settled, but you can also pick out sites such as Mt. Ranier and Fremont's Peak among others, plus you can see the route proposal for the Pacific Railroad. The map measures roughly 13" x 17". It's a guess though because it's been professionally double matted snd that's all I can see of it. Only faults are a dark spot to upper right corner and a small surface mar to mat at about 3-1/2" down from the top left. There is a small tear to the mat and a thin indentation next to it on the map itself, but the paper is not torn. The map including matting mesures 18" x 22". Will ship for $2 in U.S.

1952 Yearbook; Central High School, Omaha, Nebraska (The OBook)
2 1952 Yearbook; Central High School, Omaha, Nebraska (The OBook)
Omaha, Nebraska Central High School 1952 Hard cover Very good condition 8-1/4
I don't buy many yearbooks, but this one is special. I have never seen so many signatures from the classes of Central High School in Omaha. All of the good wishes were written for Toby. Toby was a girl -- a popular girl -- and yet I couldn't find her full name. It could be that Toby was a nickname. At any rate, this is an amazingly fun book. I almost passed it by, but I'm glad I didn't. I did the math -- okay, my husband did the math -- but now we know that if she was 18 in 1952 she would be in her early 80's. I think this one is a keeper for the right person -- a family treasure!

Aldens Fall and Winter 1951-52 Catalog
4 Aldens Fall and Winter 1951-52 Catalog
Chicago Aldens 1951 Autumn and Winter 1951-52 Soft cover Good condition
I wish the previous owner hadn't used the front cover as a scratch pad to see how much it would cost to buy two items. I wish even more that he or she had tried to erase it, maybe because the answer is wrong! Anyway this is a very nice catalog. I don't know this company and have never seen one of their catalogs, but I very much like the size which is easily handled at 5-1/2" x 9-1/2". The catalog has a whopping 972 pages of fashions for the whole family, toys, jewelry, engagement rings, household items, furniture, guns, shoes, typewriters and much more. This is a complete immersion into material culture at the beginning of the 50's -- 65 years ago. The order blank is still inside and has not been used. Only other fault is creasing to lower corners both front and back, but both have been discretely taped for strength.

Catholic Funeral Memorial Book Unused in Original Box
7 Catholic Funeral Memorial Book Unused in Original Box
Independence Funeral Home Vodargka Funeral Home No date Hard cover Fine condition in Very Good Box
Very pretty cover and two more paintings inside. The book has not been used and is very nice in its original white box. The book is without defect and the box nearly so. There are a couple small white spots on the white background which I almost missed. Otherwise it's a clean, sturdy box. The book measures 7-1/2" x 10" and is clean and bright inside and out. The binding is that of a ring binder that we used to take to school. The book has spaces for name, date and place of birth, age, and date of death. There's also room for photos, funeral notes, the names of officiants, music, the rituals at the cemetery, plus a page for a list of family and friends, floral offerings, comments from the bereaved, life memories, obituaries and more. VERY nice.

Decorative Old Maps of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (Six Fine Prints in Full Color 1940)
10 Decorative Old Maps of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (Six Fine Prints in Full Color 1940)
New York City Penn Press circa 1940 Very good
I love when I can find a portfolio of prints and ALL the prints are in it. This is the fruit of a lucky day because here we have a giant portfolio measuring 20" across x 16" tall and all six maps are accounted for. The maps are very clean with no tears and are beautiful with the lavish color of the periods. The portfolio itself had a few small tears, all of which I have repaired with almost invisible, non-browning archival tape at back. The maps are as follows: The Map of the World by N.J. Visscher who portrayed California as an island (17th c.); Map of Europe by Mercator from the famous Mercator Hondius Atlat of 1633; Map of Asia by the Blaeu Family, 1662; the Holy Land by Abraham Ortelius from the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas, 1570; New Belgium, New England and Virginia by N.J. Visscher prior to the founding of Philadelphia; and Map of Canada by Guillaume P'Isle, the foremost French cartographer circa 1720. We will ship flat. DUE TO SIZE countries outside the U.S. will incur a higher shipping charge. Please contact us with destination for an exact quote. PRIORITY mail in the U.S. will likewise require additional postage, but economy mail remains at $2.00

Excelsior Club Cleveland New Year's Eve 1927 Musical Program
11 Excelsior Club Cleveland New Year's Eve 1927 Musical Program "The Good Old Days"
Cleveland, Ohio The Excelsior Club 1927 soft cover Good-plus condition
Ephemera from the Excelsior Club, a social venue founded in Cleveland in 1872, is not often seen, but here we have a program from New Year's Eve 1927. The club was much like the Cleveland Union Club, but for upscale Jewish families with a Germanic cultural background. From the beginning help from the Halle family of Halle's department store fame was integral to the club's success. The program shows the scenes of a musical "The Good Old Days" which required members to take to the stage as singers, dancers, musicians, actors and tambourine players. Looks like great fun and is a glimpse at a Cleveland landmark that closed in 1931 when the Excelsior melded into the similar Oakwood Club. Their last building became part of Case Western Reserve University. Program measures 5-1/2" x 9-1/2" and opens to two pages, plus another at back. Overall good, but it had been folded horizontally. I ironed it and it is now flat. Program includes many names.

Florida Official Road Map 1952
12 Florida Official Road Map 1952
State Road Department of Florida 1952 soft cover Fine
Crisp, clean, seemingly unused, map of Florida -- just the thing for a 50's road trip. What's neat about it is that you could use the front address lines and send it back home to friends and family. This one, however, was not sent. The map sports color photos and when folded is larger than the maps issued by the service stations. Closed it meaures 5"x8-1/2". There's extra tourist info too, such as a list of the meanings of Florida Indian names. Note on front -- "Drive safely .... prevent sorrow." This was a time when kids bounced around the backseat of the car like balls for playing jacks. I was one of them!!

Folding Postcard Nashville, Tennessee WWI Military Message, 1917
13 Folding Postcard Nashville, Tennessee WWI Military Message, 1917
Unknown Unknown 1918 Card cover Good
This is one of those cascading postcard mailers, but the point of this one is not so much the views as the message. All but two pictures (plus reverse views) are gone -- likely the victims of the kids this WWI soldier sent to his family in Ulrichsville, Ohio. His name is Lt. Ernest C. Fox and he was on his way by train to Camp Sheridan, Montgomery, Alabama. The card was sent to his wife and children with this message: "Sept. 17, 1917, Dear Wife and Family, We arrived this far OK. Talk about colored folks, why that is about all one sees here. We have 16 cars on this train now. 498 men and 14 officers. Most of the country so far is just about like home. We have not had our breakfast yet. It is surely nice traveling on the standard Pullman. Will write you when we get to Montgomery, Alabama which will be about tomorrow morning, as we are late because of a heavy train. Love to all, Father."

Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper March 16, 1889 (President Harrison Inauguration. Sunday Drink Question. Anarchist Sunday Schools)
14 Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper March 16, 1889 (President Harrison Inauguration. Sunday Drink Question. Anarchist Sunday Schools)
Frank Leslie 1869 Vol. LXVIII, No. 1,748 soft cover Very Good condition
This popular 19th century newspaper is quite large at 11" across and 16-1/2" tall. It appears to have been bound with other issues at one time, as there is one section at top which remains threaded. The cover depicts the swearing in of Honorable G. Blaine as Secretary of State. Harrison had just won the presidential election, so much ink was used discussing his inaugural address, his cabinet choices, settling in with his family in the White House, the departure of Grover Cleveland, and a picture of celebratory fireworks at the Washington Memorial. The other two things that jumped out were anarchist Sunday schools and the Sunday drink question which of course continued for decades. Newspaper is clean and has no tears. I have several others from the same year, so if you are looking for a specific issue let me know. It will arrive flat. Ships in the U.S. for $2. OVERSEAS ORDERS WELCOME, but please contact me with destination so I can supply an actual postage quote.

15 Genealogists' Magazine: Journal of the Society of Genealogists June, 2003
London, England Society of Genealogists Enterprises Ltd. 2003 Volume 27, Number 10 card cover Very Good Condition
Love this magazine, especially this issue. If you are of a literary bent, it's fun to read the first article titled The Family of Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin and Mary Shelley, replete with family tree. Other interesting articles are: A True and Faithful Inventory of the Goods Belonging to Dr. Swift, Vicar of Lara Cor; Hugenot Family Research made Easier; Asylum and Schools for Imbeciles at Darenth, Kent; History of No. 64 Squadron R.F.C.; and new developments in Medieval Genealogy. Guy Lombardo And His Royal Canadians Booklet (SIGNED by Lombardo & Band Members, 1950's)
16 Guy Lombardo And His Royal Canadians Booklet (SIGNED by Lombardo & Band Members, 1950's)
Hollywood, California Popular Programs circa 1950's Card cover Good condition
I almost passed this one by because of the inked name on the front cover and the wear along the spine. But I opened it anyway and there was Guy Lombardo's signature! From there it got even better -- I found four more signatures from band members -- Bill Flanagan, guitarist and vocalist; Kenny Gardner, vocalist; Cliff Grass, saxman and clarinetist; Victor Lombardo, youngest brother (saxaphonist); and a name I can't decipher. It's next to Lebert Lombardo, but it's a conundrum because the first name seems to be Lebert, but the last name looks like it ends with "t." Booklet is lavishly illustrated with black and white photographs and provides much information about Guy Lombardo and his family and band. As stated, the booklet has some issues, but it's still tightly bound and clean and of course the signatures are historic.

Hebron Academy Hebron, Maine 1928 Catalog
17 Hebron Academy Hebron, Maine 1928 Catalog
Hebron, Maine Hebron Academy 1928 soft cover Good
As you can see, the cover shows dampstain, but fortunately it appears much less on the blue endpapers inside the catalog. I might have passed it by if I didn't know how hard it can be to find these old school catalogs which are interesting and also helpful with family genealogy. There is also some foxing on the photo fold-out at the front and at the back of the book -- anywhere that the paper is coated. The bulk of the catalog is NOT on coated paper though, so it is showing no foxing. This school is still in operation and traces its beginnings to the 19th century. The catalog provides the names of the Board of trustees, the calendar of school events, school history, the courses offered and what is expected of students, and a summation of available scholarships and how to get one. There's also a roster of boys from freshman through seniors. The catalog measures 6-1/2"x9-1/2" and is tightly bound with 62 pages. Also of interest is a letter inside to a Roland Leighton of Cleveland from a competing school, Bridgeton Academy, of Bridgton, Maine hoping to get him to enroll there.

Boston, Mass. Bromley & Co. circa 1950's early 1960's) Near fine
Seven beautiful glossy, full color postcards showing the interior and exterior of the home of American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; a depiction of his sons, Charles and Ernest; and of his wife, the former Frances Elizabeth Appleton. The house was located at 105 Brattle Street, Cambridge Mass. and Longfellow lived in it from 1837 to 1882. The chairw as given to him as a gift on his 72nd birthday from the children of Cambridge because it was made of the chestnut wood made famous in his poem "The Village Blacksmith." The room with the fireplace was Longfellow's study. The other one with a table was the dining room, and the staircase is what he referred to as "the broad hall stair" in "The Children's Hour". The cards not used and show only faint toning to backs. All will arrive in plastic sleeves. A nice little gift for the right person.

How to Build A Better Home / Copper and Brass Research Association
20 How to Build A Better Home / Copper and Brass Research Association
New York Copper and Brass Research Association circa 1920's-30's soft cover Very good
Very nice booklet oversized at 8"x10-1/2" Though clearly an advertising vehicle for the Copper and Brass Research Association, the contents are most impressive -- NOT a "fluff piece." It's illustrated throughout with both photographs and drawings with the emphasis on the use of brass and copper as an investment for the future -- copper roofs, copper leaders and gutters, brass plumbing, and copper, brass or bronze hardware. Booklet has 31 pages and is clean and tightly bound. The top front edge shows evidence of something stamped on it at one time, but is smudged. There is no date, and few clues, but a drawing of a family in front of a house indicate by woman's clothing that it's 1920's or 30's.
