75th Anniversary Gala Program Severance Hall, September 30, 2006 (Cleveland, Ohio)
1 75th Anniversary Gala Program Severance Hall, September 30, 2006 (Cleveland, Ohio)
Cleveland, Ohio Severance Hall 2006 7sth Anniversary Card cover Very good condition
Very handsome souvenir commemorating Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra. Seventy-five years of fine music is captured in these pages, including blue tinted pictures. There are many people named in the first two pages -- chairs, co-chairs, honorary committee members, gala committee, grand benefactors, benefactors, patrons, and leadership gift donors. There's also a nice section about the orchestra's summer 2006 European tour, plus a retrospective of years past. The Opening Night Gala program is listed along with a bio of Franz Welser-Most, Music Director, and more. Program measures 8-1/2" x 11-1.2" and has 24 pages. Only fault is a small bit of scratching to lower back corner next to spine. Overall quite lovely and worth keeping.

2 A Brilliant History Jewels at Sotheby's (1978)
London Sotheby's 1978 Card cover Fine condition

This one features a famous person on each page -- the Duchess of Windsor, Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, Edna Winston, Elton John, Countess Mona Bismarck, the Count and Countess du Boisrouvray, Ava Gardner, Helene Beaumont, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and Marlene Dietrich. The jewels are top drawer from the most revered jewelers in the world and each is beautifully described. Catalog is printed on glossy paper throughout. A Happy New Year Bird Series Postcard Large Red Bird in Pine Boughs 1910
3 A Happy New Year Bird Series Postcard Large Red Bird in Pine Boughs 1910
Unknown 1910 Very good
The greeting, A Happy New Year, is hiding in the pine boughts in the lower left hand corner, so is easy to miss. But what a handsome card this is! It's gilded and embossed with a bold image superimposed over a small winter vignette. Lovely! This card was sent to a Mrs. C. Nundahl of Perry, North Dakota. The message reads, "Dear friend, Your card received. Thanks. It is a fine ? you have. Wish I could visit you sometime. Let us send cards once in a while. Best wishes for a Happy New Year. M.A." Card shows a little corner wear at the top, but is otherwise clean and nice.

Blanche Lizzell and the Color Woodcut (Art Exhibition Catalog 2002)
6 Blanche Lizzell and the Color Woodcut (Art Exhibition Catalog 2002)
Boston, Mass. MFA Publications 2002 soft cover Good-plus
Wow -- what a beautiful catalog this is! The color woodcuts are just charming and the catalog is very clean and mostly very, very nice. But it looks as though someone set a wet glass on it inside the cover. (See second photo) Consequently there are some light pink spots to reverse side of cover and a slight bit of crinkliness to the area where the glass was, though I have pressed it much flatter in the book press and it covers just a few pages at front. The rest is pristine and no images are involved. The good news about this is the price! I reduced it considerably. Blanche Lazell (1878-1956) was a printmaker, painter and designer, but she is best known for her white line woodcut technique based on the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print. Catalog measures 8-1/2x9-1/2" and has 96 pages which include two essays. Exhibit was shown in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Cleveland Museum of Art and Elvehjem Museum in Madison, Wisconsin.

Chinese Comic Journey To the West (20 booklets in Box, 1996)
13 Chinese Comic Journey To the West (20 booklets in Box, 1996)
Shanghai Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House 1996 7532216462 / 9787532216468 Presumed First Soft covers Fine books and VG Box
I bought this last night at a book and paper sale -- what a surprise! I have been going to this place for 20 years and never have I seen any any Asian items I can recall. The box is covered with blue cloth and is clean and sturdy. Inside are two stacks of small comic books, ten on each side. The text is in Chinese, but the black and white drawings tell a story too. The little books measure 3-1/2" x 5". I was able to translate much, but the same exact specific item was used in every translation site which was a problem because two books are missing from that one. Mine has ALL TWENTY. The translated ones are:Dragon Palace I; Dragon Palace II; Two Mountains; Gao Laozhuang; Quicksand; White Tiger; True Hawk; Red Baby; Tongtian River; Golden Pocket; True Monkey Ling; Flaming Mountain; Fake West; Pirates of the Caribbean; Lion Camel; No Bottom Hole; Battle of Qinglongshen; and Retrieve the Scriptures. As stated the little booklets are clean and attractive, as is the box which has only a grey spot to the title box on the outside. A very nice collectible.

Christmas Postcard A Christmas Reverie Santa with Pipe and Smoke 1908
14 Christmas Postcard A Christmas Reverie Santa with Pipe and Smoke 1908
1908 Very good
An ornate design with a shiny gold background and embossing make this one a standout. There is a slight postmark to the front, so the price has been adjusted for same, but it's still a beauty with just a little corner wear! Note the kids in the whirl of smoke from Santa's pipe. There's no indication of origin, but there is a printed notation on the back that says St. Nicholas Series No. 3. The message on the divided back reads "How did you find everybody in Logansport? Am going to Niad (?) this afternoon and wish you could be there too. That candy was just fine. Mary." The card is addressed to Clara McGlorie of Logansport, Indiana and postmarked 1908.

15 Cleveland X Artists from a Post-Industrial City (art catalog 1993)
Cleveland, Ohio Spaces 1993 Card cover Fine condition
Most art catalogs are big, but this one measures a small 6" square. Perhaps its size is why it's so seldom seen, but it's very creatively made in a way that fuses graphic design with fine art. Banks, Cushmere Bell, Rebecca Browning, Claire Coleman, Laura D'Alessandro, Dexter Davis, Charles Dunn, Kevin Everson, Patti Fields and Ray Juaire, Derek Hess, Mark Howard, Jim Karpowicz, Anthony Mahone, Clay Parker, Wendy Rodgers, Megan Sweeney, Bryn Zellers and Norbert Ziebold. Cowell & Hubbard:The Couturier Collection (Surprise Cover)
17 Cowell & Hubbard:The Couturier Collection (Surprise Cover)
Cleveland, Ohio Cowell & Hubbard Unknown (Presumed 80's) Unknown Card cover Very good condition
The cover of this trade catalog presented by Cowell and Hubbard, Cleveland, Ohio's premiere jewelry store from 1861. It looks like the title box is falling off and the cover is wrinkled. But, no! It's flat and smooth -- the design tricked the eye. What also makes this catalog so interesting is the pairing of expensive fine jewelry with couture clothing designed by Bill Blass, Adele Simpson, Ralph Lauren and others. Catalog measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" with 72 pages. There's also an order blank which folds into an envelope -- unused. Unfortunately, there is no date and no clues. I came to the conclusion that it might be from the 80's because of a long sleeved wedding dress with a hat.

Decorative Old Maps of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (Six Fine Prints in Full Color 1940)
18 Decorative Old Maps of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (Six Fine Prints in Full Color 1940)
New York City Penn Press circa 1940 Very good
I love when I can find a portfolio of prints and ALL the prints are in it. This is the fruit of a lucky day because here we have a giant portfolio measuring 20" across x 16" tall and all six maps are accounted for. The maps are very clean with no tears and are beautiful with the lavish color of the periods. The portfolio itself had a few small tears, all of which I have repaired with almost invisible, non-browning archival tape at back. The maps are as follows: The Map of the World by N.J. Visscher who portrayed California as an island (17th c.); Map of Europe by Mercator from the famous Mercator Hondius Atlat of 1633; Map of Asia by the Blaeu Family, 1662; the Holy Land by Abraham Ortelius from the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas, 1570; New Belgium, New England and Virginia by N.J. Visscher prior to the founding of Philadelphia; and Map of Canada by Guillaume P'Isle, the foremost French cartographer circa 1720. We will ship flat. DUE TO SIZE countries outside the U.S. will incur a higher shipping charge. Please contact us with destination for an exact quote. PRIORITY mail in the U.S. will likewise require additional postage, but economy mail remains at $2.00

20 Drawings and Illustrations by Ernest Howard Shepard (art catalog 2006 -- Winnie the Pooh artist)
London (U.K.) The Fine Art Society 2006 soft cover Very fine condition
Crisp, beautiful art catalog published to accompany an exhibit held December 6-21, 2006 in association with Sally Hunter Fine Art. The artist, Ernest Howard Shepard, is best known for Winnie the Pooh. He was born in 1879 and died in 1976, but worked well into his 90's. Shepard is associated with a gentle art that portrayed a very English point of view -- the enchanted places of childhood, and the comedy of manners, but, above it all, Winnie the Pooh. Many wonderful examples of his work throughout, each with attribution. Most in black and white, but some color. 32 Pages. Mesures 6-1/2" x 9-3/4". Pristine.
