France Illustration Magazine July, 1948
2 France Illustration Magazine July, 1948
Paris Revue Hebdomadaire 1948 soft cover Very good
Very large magazine measuring 11"x15", published in Paris in the FRENCH Language. The cover photo shows a scene from the United States Republican Convention in Philadelphia that year. The magazine was political, but it also discussed books, science, art, and cinema among other topics. The stories in this issue cover the politics Of Finland and their elections; Rouen, the tourist port on the Riviera; the ransom of liberty; the clouds of Cuba; electricity; and the Grand Week of a horse race. Magazine is clean and nice with no label. Only faults are a small tear to outer edge of front cover repaired by me at back with non-browning archival tape and a bit of light soil to back cover. George Washington Postcards by Merrimack (3)
3 George Washington Postcards by Merrimack (3)
New York Merrimack Publishing No date Card stock Very good condition, unused 1 set
I bought these postcards from a history buff who particularly took interest in the life of George Washington. The three cards are from series No. 2320 and all show various amounts of metallic flair. The first one shows an image of Washington next to the White House and at the lower right corner he is named "Washington, The Father of the Country." The second card is clearly an emotional moment when Washingon took leave of his officers, hence why he was ebracing one. The third card is Washignton astride his white horse. The writing at top reads "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." All cards are also embossed as you can see fom the backs. The cards will arive in brand new plastic sleeves.

Hartman Stock Farm Horse Department 1905 (Columbus, Ohio)
5 Hartman Stock Farm Horse Department 1905 (Columbus, Ohio)
Columbus, Ohio Hartman Stock Farm 1904 soft cover Very good condition
This is a horse lover's information/advertising book issued by S.C. and M.D. Hartman, importers and breeders of Percheron Draft and German Coaching horses for their Columbus, Ohio farm. The Hartmans also operated a poultry department, but the only reference to that here is a full page color ad and a few pictures of outbuildings and a couple pages of info. The spotlight is definitely on the horses. Contents include, among other topics, these: the Barb, or the horse of the Sahara; an anatomical study of the horse; a study of the mouth of a horse; description and illustrations of Hartman Farm; origin of the Percheron; imported Percherons, home bred Percherons; and the German coach horse. Book is clean and tightly bound, measures 7-1/2" x 10" and has 189 pages printed on quality coated paper. Only faults are a spine crease and a bit of light foxing to exterior page edges. Otherwise quite good. Hard to find.

Indian Print The Meeting of Irandati and the Yaksa General Purnaka 1955
7 Indian Print The Meeting of Irandati and the Yaksa General Purnaka 1955
Unknown 1955 Very Good
This is a beautiful print clearly from a book, but of unknown origin. Only the date 1955 is penciled on the back. The print is tipped onto the page so you can lift it up. The caption reads: The meeting of Irandati, the Naga princess (on a swing), and the Yaksa general Purnaka. His magic horse is on the left. Detail of Vidhura Pandita Jataka; wall painting on rock, in monastery (cave II). Ajanta, Hyderabad, Deccan. Fifth century." The full page measures 8-1/2"x12" and the image itself 7"x9". Photograph Taylorsville, Indiana Family On the Porch 1909
8 Photograph Taylorsville, Indiana Family On the Porch 1909
Taylorsville, Indiana Unknown photographer 1909 Hard backing
This is a remarkably sharp photo with great contrast. The only reason I know that it was a warm day in 1909 Taylorsville,Indiana is the pencilled date and place on the back. There is much here to tell you such things as the homeowner's appreciation of decorative pots of flowers and their liking of rocking chairs. Even the little boy is rocking on a rocking horse. But the thing I noticed first was the young man off to the left of the porch. If you look at the young lady in the white dress ON the porch you can see she is not pleased with him. He's not even looking at her, nor is he engaging with the whole group. The photo was mounted on the gray board used to mount ohotographs at the turn of the century, but there is evidence here that someone cut it down to just the photo. The two lower corners lost the top layer of paper also, so to keep it from deteriorating I repaired it with grey art paper (see second photo). The image measures 7-3/4" x 9-3/4".

Postcard Fire Department Headquarters, Indianapolis, Ind.
9 Postcard Fire Department Headquarters, Indianapolis, Ind.
Indianapolis, Indiana Majestic Publishing Company circa early 1900's Good-plus condition
What a colorful and interesting scene this is. Not only does it show a handsome fire station, but also vehicles, fire fighters, and the horse power that fueled the machinery. The card shows a tiny bit of corner wear and writing on divided back. It was never sent, but it has been written on across the dividing line with no attempt at an address. The writing is a little hard to read, but the gist of it is the writer was busy with company and likes the recipient's choice of cards. Nothing too exciting there, but the picture at the front is great. Card will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.

10 Postcard Peter Pluto 2.05-3/4
Chicago Curt Teich Unknown Very good
I've never seen this card before and can't find a comparable, but it's certainly attractive if you love horses. A little research dates this horse to 1918 and the card shows the sire as Peter the Great and the dam as Nell Worthy L. Beneath the names it says, In the Stud Forkland, Robert S. Strader Lexington, Kentucky. The card is criso and clean, has not been used and will arrive in a brans new plastic sleeve.

Postcard Wellington, Ohio West Main Street
11 Postcard Wellington, Ohio West Main Street
Wellington, Ohio A.H. Binder Unknown Fine
Attractive card in full color of downtown Wellington, Ohio. The card is postally unused and there is no writing, so we have nothing concrete to date it. However, if you look closely you can see horse drawn wagons on both sides of the street. The sign on the building in the forefront on the left side says Cheese. This is no surprise though because Wellington billed itself as The Cheese Empire of the World. Beautiful card with saturated color and crisp paper. Will arrive in plastic sleeve.

Real Photo Postcard People on a Hay Wagon (Ohio)
12 Real Photo Postcard People on a Hay Wagon (Ohio)
Marietta, Ohio M.P. Fischer Studio 1906 Very Good
Twenty people on a hay wagon and the poor horse get short-shrift, but what a fun real photo postcard. It was even taken by a photography studio. On the space provided beneath the image the sender wrote, Hello, Sister! How does this look? Sadie." When you flip the card over you find THREE postmarks -- the original comes from Gracey, Ohio followed by Caldwell, Ohio and finally to it's destination in Chandlersville, Ohio. The recipient was Mary Mason. Oh, and look closely -- Sadie put a small "x" on her dress so you can find her!

Very nice entertainment magazine devoted to nighttime pleasures including dining and dancing, but especially theatre. It's oversized at 10"x14" and has 116 pages. The Millionaire's Diary 1968
20 The Millionaire's Diary 1968
United States G.P. Putnam's Sons 1967 hard cover Fine condition
This is a hard cover, rather large, "diary" made for the well-heeled. I bought it a long time ago and forgot I ever had it! I looked online for one, but came up empty which is strange because it was published by Putnam's, a large publisher. This one has never been used, though I wish it had! As it is, it's pristine inside and out. Actually the term "diary" isn't quite right. It's mostly a calendar in which the millionaire could keep track of his/her many social and business events. There's also information on the very best of anything that could be bought in 1968, including airplanes, body guards, children's tailors, estate agents, exotic food, furriers, horse racing, property protection, riding schools, singing birds (yes, really!), telephone stand-ins (whatever those are), and violins and wigs! Calendar measures 9-1/4" x 11-1/4" and has 296 pages. Heavy as it is, it ships in the U.S. for $2 as always.
