1 "A Scottish Evening" Derwentwater Print
Unknown Unknown Fine
I bought this pretty pastel print from a bookstore that went out of business some years ago, but I kept it thinking I would frame it. Seeing that that hasn't happened, however, the time has come ("the Walrus said)to talk of other things. I wish I could tell you who created it, but the artist failed to sign it. All I can see by holding a magnifying glass up to the tiny penciled writing under the image is the title, "A Scottish Evening", which depicts Derwentwater, a beautiful area you can visit online. The entire thing measures 6"x10", but the image which is set into the place designated for it (creates a mat) is 3"x5". The entire piece is crisp and clean with no damage. Perfect for a cozy little spot.

2 "Seated at the organ I was weary and ill at ease" The Lost Chord Vintage Postcard
New York The Knapp Company Unknown Near fine
This is the prettiest card I've seen using a line from F. Earl Christy's poem "The Lost Chord." Most of them are in black and white with a rather disheveled background, though more of the verse. This shows only the first line -- clearly it's part of a series -- which reads "Seated one day at the organ I was weary and ill at ease ..." The small center graphic is lovely and makes for an understated, elegant card. It has not been postally used and there is no writing. It's numberd 381.

3 "The Incline Smile" Mt. Manitou Scenic Incline Car Color Postcard (Colorado)
Unknown 1910 Good
Love this one! A full color view of an early tourist ride in Manitou Springs, Colorado. The "incline car", as they called it, was built in 1907 to support the construction of a hydroelectric plant and its waterline. When that was done a Dr. Brumbach bought it as a tourist attraction. It was a steep 16 minute ride through the glories of the Colorado mountains. Sadly, it had to be abandoned after a rock slide in 1990. The card is clean and nice, but does show tiny spote of light edge wear and a small chip from the tip of the lower corner. The divided back has this message, "I am still in Colorado Springs. E.R." It was sent to Miss Clara Bergman, Concordia, Missouri. The card will arrive in a plastic sleeve

4 "This Is the Draped Dress" Matted Best & Co. Ad Woman's Home Companion 1922
Woman's Home Companion Magazine 1922 Very Good
I am not usually attracted to most of the matted and/or framed advertising available, but this one caught my eye. The monotone art is not only elegant, but evocative of the Jazz Age -- the world of Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald and the artistic women of the Left Bank. As indicated on the reverse side, the image comes from the Picture Section of Woman's Home Companion magazine July, 1922. Both it and its mat are very clean. The art is the creation of John La Gatta (1894-1977), an illustrator best remembered for his work featuring women. The overall size with mat is 12"x13" while the image itself is 9"x9-3/4"

1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
6 1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
Unknown Location Johnson and Ward circa 1863 later printing
The 1862 map of the territories of Washington and Oregon is a lovely thing with its hand coloring and handsome double face font for lettering. If you look in the lower corner you see the number 57 which indicates it was the 57th plate in Alvin J. Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas published originally by Johnson and Browning in 1862. The question is when was this particular one printed? It states on the map that the publisher was Johnston and Ward which means it's around 1863, as that's the year the company's name changed from Johnson and Browning to Johnson and Ward. The map was made at the start of the Civil War with much land especially in eastern Oregon not settled, but you can also pick out sites such as Mt. Ranier and Fremont's Peak among others, plus you can see the route proposal for the Pacific Railroad. The map measures roughly 13" x 17". It's a guess though because it's been professionally double matted snd that's all I can see of it. Only faults are a dark spot to upper right corner and a small surface mar to mat at about 3-1/2" down from the top left. There is a small tear to the mat and a thin indentation next to it on the map itself, but the paper is not torn. The map including matting mesures 18" x 22". Will ship for $2 in U.S.

7 1921 Guide To Historic Plymouth Illustrated (includes extra items)
Plymouth, Mass. Plymouth Tercentenary Committee 1921 Soft cover Very good
This guide book is filled with extra ephemera. Whenever I find goodies inside a book or booklet that are relevant to the topic I keep them all together. The guide book also has another extra plus -- penciled notes on a few pages, plus more handwritten notes on a sheet of Plymouth Rock House stationery, AND more on a map postcard of the Plymouth area. The guide measures 5-1/4" x 7-3/4" and is illustrated with black and white photos throughout. 96 pages and all items fit perfectly inside.

1930 Liberty Magazine Calendar (1973 REPRINT Leslie Thrasher Art)
8 1930 Liberty Magazine Calendar (1973 REPRINT Leslie Thrasher Art)
Coshocton, Ohio Liberty Library Corporation 1973 soft cover Very good
I wish this were the original calendar from 1930, but it's very obvious that it's not given the advertising info on the front for Akron Industrial Metals Co. But it's still very cute and even threw recipients a bone since 1975 and 1930 shared common dates which meant it could actually be used. Fortunately it was not used, or all the pages may have been discarded. Every month shows a bright color image featuring cute kids rendered by Leslie Trhasher and original advertising on the back. The calendar measures 7"x12-1/2" and has a metal hanger at the top. Only fault is a small stain over the "y" in Liberty on the front.

1952 Yearbook; Central High School, Omaha, Nebraska (The OBook)
9 1952 Yearbook; Central High School, Omaha, Nebraska (The OBook)
Omaha, Nebraska Central High School 1952 Hard cover Very good condition 8-1/4
I don't buy many yearbooks, but this one is special. I have never seen so many signatures from the classes of Central High School in Omaha. All of the good wishes were written for Toby. Toby was a girl -- a popular girl -- and yet I couldn't find her full name. It could be that Toby was a nickname. At any rate, this is an amazingly fun book. I almost passed it by, but I'm glad I didn't. I did the math -- okay, my husband did the math -- but now we know that if she was 18 in 1952 she would be in her early 80's. I think this one is a keeper for the right person -- a family treasure!

1964 Official Program 12th Annual Cumberland Sports Car Races
10 1964 Official Program 12th Annual Cumberland Sports Car Races
U.S.A. Steel Cities Region Sports Car Club of America Inc. 1964 soft cover Very good condition
Very nice program for the races held at the Cumberland Municipal Airport May, 15, 16, 17, 1964. The event included the national championship and regional races. Previous owner penciled in notes for some races which could be easily removed, but you may not want to, as it shows who won etc. Program measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 20 pages including a blank one for notes which is unused. Includes auto related advertising. Faults are these: a tear to bottom of spine which I repaired with non-browning archival tape on both sides and a small stain to one page.

1971 Steam Passenger Service Directory Sixth Annual (Additional Ephemera Laid-in)
11 1971 Steam Passenger Service Directory Sixth Annual (Additional Ephemera Laid-in)
New York Empire State Railway Museum Inc. 1971 Sixth annual soft cover All items very good
This is an interesting combination of items, all in one from a previous collector. The 6th Annual Steam Passenger Service Directory of 1971 was stuffed with numerous newspaper stories about trains, primarily from the Toledo, Ohio area during the 70's. These did cause some toning to the reverse side of cover, both front and back, but I have sequestered them now in a plastic bag in which they will arrive. Also accompanying the directory are a brochure, a business card and an unused ticket, all from the Toledo Lake Erie and Western Railway, Inc. The directory measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and has 128 page , all of which contain a black and white photograph, plus info on each train.

1978 Calendar Dance Magazine Quotes the Greats (School of Cleveland Ballet)
12 1978 Calendar Dance Magazine Quotes the Greats (School of Cleveland Ballet)
New York City Dance Magazine 1977 soft cover Fine Condition
This was an annual calendar designed and published by Dance Magazine for distribution to entities such as the School of Cleveland Ballet which could have their name printed on the final page for their own advertising. I have seen these before, but always missing at least one page. This one has all 12 and all are pristine. Each month shows a photo of a famous dancer along with a quote from each. The 1978 calendar aimed the spotlight on Alexandra Danilova, Natalia Makorova, Peter Martins, Edward Vilella, Vaslav Nijinsky, Louis Peres, Cynthia Gregory, Margot Fonteyn, Erik Bruhn, Martha Graham, Mikail Baryshnikov, and Anna Pavlova. Measures 4" x 8-3.4"

13 1993 National Fall Shoot September 11-19 (Walter Cline Range Friendship, Indiana)
Friednship, Indiana National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association 1993 soft cover Very good condition
Very nice program which includes the winners from the various matches. The event is held by the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association located in tiny Friendship, Indiana. These matches drew in a lot of people, both bystanders and competitors. The booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 39 pages. It's very clean and somehow managed not to get folded in half. If you were there and lost yours here's a chance to get a replacement. I've never seen these out in the wild before this one!

20 Play Books Saalfield Artcraft (1953)
14 20 Play Books Saalfield Artcraft (1953)
Akron. Ohio Saalfield Publishing 1953 soft cover in original box Very good condition
I grew up in Akron, Ohio home of the old and beloved Saalfield Publishing Company. The company was known for books in boxes such as this one and also its licensing for Shirley Temple books. Saalfield had novels too for older kids, so we never grew out of them until we weren't kids anymore. This particular box is new to me, but I would have loved it.The box says it contains 20 playbooks for drawing, coloring, picture hunts, riddles, connect the dots, games and mazes. Twenty it may have been, but it ended up housing 22 -- no repeats and no coloring. Fun gift! Measures 6" x 9". Books are clean and bright and box is sturdy. One corner is neatly repaired with brown tape.

24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
15 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
U.S.A. American Preservation Unknown date Unknown edition Disbound Articles Very Good Condition
I found these disbound articles in a box of Architectual Review Magazines which I bought at auction. I almost tossed them out until I realized how worthy they are. Each of the 24 focuses on a particular area within a state located anywhere in the country. They all derived from American Preservation magazine, so the color photographs are stunning. Each article is pretty long with many images. I wish I had more room to show them. Areas are these: New Orleans Lower Garden District; Providence, Rhode Island; Salem Massachusetts; Eutaw, Alabama's Greek Revival Architecture; Galveston, Texas; Mizner's Eden Palm Beach's Flamboyant Architecture; Brownsville, Texas; Waterford, Virginia; Helena, Montana; Columbus, Georgia; Madison, Indiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Oregon; Mt. Auburn in Cincinnati, Ohio; Manchester area of Pittsburgh; Savannah, Georgia; Powelton Village, Philadelphia; Saratoga Springs, New York; Crested Butte in the Rocky Mts.; Detroit's Woodward East; Oakland cemetery; Galena, Illinois and Bay View, A Summer Resort in Michigan. All are clean and stapled. Will still ship for $2 media in the U.S. as always.

25 Asian Prints in Folder 1978 (All Portraits, Nine in Color)
16 25 Asian Prints in Folder 1978 (All Portraits, Nine in Color)
Asia Unknown 1978 Card folder Very Good
I have had these prints for years, but never listed them because the title is in Asian characters. I can't recall where I even got them, but they are quite handsome. There are supposed to be 16 black and white numbered prints, all portraits drawn with pencil, inside the folder and all are present. But here's the nice surprise -- nine other numbered prints in full color appear to have hitchhiked along. These apparently were at least a set of 10, but one is missing. Nine nice freebies aren't bad though! :-) The folder measures 7-1/2"x10-1/2" and is very clean, though toned. A previous owner also taped a short tear at top of spine. The prints are very white -- no foxing or toning. Paper is lightweight and one print shows a small rough area to top edge, but could still be framed with no problem. Overall an interesting set.

30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
17 30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
New Orlean, LA G.F. Castleden 1924-1929 Fine in Very Good Envelopes
These are a lovely find if you are enchanted by the architecture of New Orleans. I've never seen this many in one place ever, but I got them from the estate of a Castleden collector. Castleden was a British artist who emigrated to New Orleans and continued his career as an artist there. The cards were aimed at the tourist trade -- ten scenes for a quarter. Three of the original envelopes will accompany them, but the cards weren't in them, so I am uncertain which belong where. The scenes are Old World beautiful and include, but are not confined to, these subjects: Pirate Alley, the monastery of the Capuchian monks, the staircase of the old St. Louis Hotel, the courtyard of the old Spanish Arsenal, oyster schooners, the Spanish Gate of Cabildo, the Courtyard of the Little Theatre, and the Little Green Shutter Tea Room. None have been used and all are in excellent condition. The envelopes are a little worn, but not bad. The photo shows an array of cards, but not all -- there really are thirty!

51st Rose Bowl Game, Official Program, Michigan Vs. Oregon State (1965)
18 51st Rose Bowl Game, Official Program, Michigan Vs. Oregon State (1965)
Pasadena, California 1965 soft cover Very good
Great graphic on this vintage Rose Bowl parade program dated January 1, 1951. The University of Michigan Wolverines tussled with The Oregon Beavers that day and the Wolverines not only took the game handily with a score of 34 to 7, but Wolverine full-back Mel Anthony was named Rose Bowl player of the Game. The program is almost a magazine. It measures 8-1/2"x11" and has 98 pages, all tightly bound. there is one small tear to outer back edge, but I mended it with non-browning almost invisible archival tape. Fun gift for a Rose Bowl fan.

A Bright and Happy New Year (Gift Book early 1900's)
20 A Bright and Happy New Year (Gift Book early 1900's)
New York Cupples & Leon Company Unstated, but clearly early 1900's Hard cover Very good Condition
I love gift books of all kinds. They fall off shelves into my hands wherever I go. This one is bit different though -- I would call it more of a hard cover greeting card, as it has only eleven pages with pretty art and positive wishes for the coming year. The title page shows that the buyer considered it as a card too and sent it to Mr. and Mrs. La Vake from Mr. and Mrs. Neison. Here's an example of the wishes, "Carry into the new year only the choicest thoughts and inspirations." Book measures 4" x 7-1/2" and is clean and tightly bound.
