Blanche Lizzell and the Color Woodcut (Art Exhibition Catalog 2002)
1 Blanche Lizzell and the Color Woodcut (Art Exhibition Catalog 2002)
Boston, Mass. MFA Publications 2002 soft cover Good-plus
Wow -- what a beautiful catalog this is! The color woodcuts are just charming and the catalog is very clean and mostly very, very nice. But it looks as though someone set a wet glass on it inside the cover. (See second photo) Consequently there are some light pink spots to reverse side of cover and a slight bit of crinkliness to the area where the glass was, though I have pressed it much flatter in the book press and it covers just a few pages at front. The rest is pristine and no images are involved. The good news about this is the price! I reduced it considerably. Blanche Lazell (1878-1956) was a printmaker, painter and designer, but she is best known for her white line woodcut technique based on the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print. Catalog measures 8-1/2x9-1/2" and has 96 pages which include two essays. Exhibit was shown in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Cleveland Museum of Art and Elvehjem Museum in Madison, Wisconsin.

Collier's Magazine July 10, 1943 (General Jonathan Wainwright POW)
3 Collier's Magazine July 10, 1943 (General Jonathan Wainwright POW)
Springfield, Ohio Crowell-Collier Publishing Co. 1943 Volume 112, No. 2 soft cover Very Good
Very nice clean magazine with just two faults -- a little foxing to bottom margin on reverse side of cover and the mailing label at front. Otherwise it's tightly bound and attractive. Measures 10-1/2"x13". The issues from the WWII era are especially good -- many color ads with a military theme and a military cover. This cover features General Jonathan Wainwright, Commander of U.S. Forces on Bataan Peninsula March 18-May 6, 1942 when he was taken as a prisoner of war in Formosa. There's an article inside about it. Other interesting articles include Presidential predictions for 1944; the opium boats, sinister "pleasure ships" which sailed from Hong Kong before the Japanese were at war, but ultimately revealed Japan's silent weapon; and life behind barbed wire. There are also a number of short stories, including one from the very popular, Faith Baldwin,

Cutout Dressing Books; Japanese Paperdolls
5 Cutout Dressing Books; Japanese Paperdolls
Japan No publisher stated No date. Circa 1940s-50's Card cover Like new
This is a charming paperdoll book with a Japanese flair. There's no date, but the pictures seem to suggest that it comes from the 1940's or 50s. Everything is die-cut, so no scissors necessary. Just pop out the dolls, the clothes, and the accessories and it's time to play. There are four pages filled with items -- I've photographed them all so you can see everything that comes with it. Book measures 7-1/2 x 10-1/2" in beautiful condition.

Washington D.C. International Sculpture Center 1993 0963363816 / 9780963363817 Card Cover Fine condition
If you appreciate Japanese art this is a particularly interesting catalog, as it shows creative "waves" which changed Japanese calligraphy. This went on for a long period of time to reach the Avant Garde Calligraphy Movement in Japan which shares a relationship between the Avant Garde and Western Abstract Art. Another essay titled The Calligraphic Spirit and Modern American Art. From there we see the many samples of modern calligraphy. The catalog measures 9" square and has 111 pages. Fortune Magazine March, 1935 (Japanese Silk; 6 Day Bike Race Madison Square Garden)
7 Fortune Magazine March, 1935 (Japanese Silk; 6 Day Bike Race Madison Square Garden)
New York Time-Life 1935 Volume XI, No. 3 soft cover Good
There is a bit damage to this one, but I bought it anyway because the article about Japanese silk is fantastic! I'll get to that soon, but first you need to know that the upper corner of the last couple pages and the back cover corner were all creased up. I have been able to smooth it all out (see photos)-- we're talking just a couple pages at the back. One required archival tape before the corner fell off and one has a small loss of a corner. The cover just shows several creases at the corner. There's also a small bit of wear to both the top and bottom of the spine, but it doesn't impinge on the binding at all. Everything is tight. Now then, the best story in this issue is a TEN PAGE extravaganza about Japanese cloth. If you love textiles, or all things Japanese as I do, this one's a keeper! Other articles are about International Cement, Soviet Art, symphony finance, Social Security, the six day bike race at Madison Square Garden, and Duparquet, the company which provided quality cooking utensils and kitchen design. Magazine is huge at 11"x14", but still ships for $2.00 in the U.S. OVERSEAS ORDERS WELCOME, but due to size and weight the shipping will be higher. Contact me with destination and I will provide an actual cost. No obligation.

Frank Lloyd Wright A Modern Aesthetic June 6 to July 15, 1986 (The Darwin D. Martin House)
8 Frank Lloyd Wright A Modern Aesthetic June 6 to July 15, 1986 (The Darwin D. Martin House)
Chicago, Illinois Struve Gallery 1986 card cover Very Good Condition
This is a beautiful catalog in very good condition. It should, however, have a white paper dustwrapper printed with the exact design on the cover of the booklet itself. It's still very attractive with no defect of note. The Darwin D. Marvin house was built in Buffalo, New York in 1903-1904 and was considered the house that truly showed Wright's genius. Wright was friends with the owners until the death of Darwin Martin in 1935. Until then he designed furniture, lighting fixtures and even dresses for Mrs. Martin. He also consulted on the couple's collection of Japanese prints and ceramics. This booklet measures 8" x 11" and is illustrated handsomely with photos of the stained glass windows and the furniture.

Japonisme: Japanese Influence on French Art 1854-1910 (2 catalogs, 1975)
11 Japonisme: Japanese Influence on French Art 1854-1910 (2 catalogs, 1975)
Cleveland, Ohio Cleveland Museum of Art et al. 1975 First edition soft cover Very good
These are examples of beautiful and informative art catalogs. There's a large one that's like a book and another thin one to augment it. The smaller one is most common, but usually it doesn't include the over pages protecting the cover as shown here. There is much to read in the large book which features full page tipped-in color art in addition to that which is printed on the page, primarily in black and white. The catalog measures 8" x 10-1/2" and is very clean and tightly bound. Cover is plain white and pristine, designed with a dustjacket which shows a small horizontal crease to lower front edge. Printed on high quality glossy paper. Essays include the following: Japonisme; Early Sources and the French Printmaker 1854-1882 by Gabriel P. Weisburg; Japanese Influence on French Prints 1883-1910 by Phillip Dennis Cate; Japanese Influence on French Painting 1854-1910 by Gerald Needham;. and Japonisme and French Decorative Arts by Martin Eidelberg and William R. Johnston. The smaller booklet is in black and white with both photos and art. It measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 26 counted pages. Catalogs were published to accompany the exhibit held from July 9, 1985 to January 26, 1976 at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Rutger's University Art Gallery; and The Walters Art Gallery. Kyoto Map and Brochure and Kyoto Booklet via Government
13 Kyoto Map and Brochure and Kyoto Booklet via Government
Nichiku Osaka, Japan and Kyoto Warajiya Co. LTD and large Booklet by Kyoto government No date stated Folded Cardstock Card cover
There is no date on this item, but I think it's probable that it was part of the wave of Japanese travel items after WWII. This is a giant map which measures 21" x 29" open and folds down to 3-3/4" x 10-1/2". The art inside is charming and offers much information about Kyoto and how to explore it. I did repair a few small tears along the map creases with archival tape which is practically unable to be seen. There is also a crease on one panel that I was able to flatten with an iron. The text is in ENGLISH. I just added this large booklet because they make a handsome pair. This one has large black and white photographs and was published by the city of Kyoto's government. 1962.

Oriental Art Catalog August 27, 88, 1970 Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc.
16 Oriental Art Catalog August 27, 88, 1970 Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc.
East Dennis, Massachsuetts Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc. 1970 Card cover Very good condition
Catalog is clean and bright with no tears and no writing, and is tightly bound. The only fault is a trim to the yapped edge at side edge of front cover. This is often done because the overhang develops small tears which end up with pieces of the edge falling off. This trim was better than most. The catalog measures 7" x 10-1/2" and has black and white photographs which show both Chinese and Japanese items. Most of the works came from the estate of Andrew R. Dole of Oak Park, Illinois. Session I focused on Japanese art. Among the items were prints and paintings, snuff bottles, rugs, wood carvings, sculpture, ivory, netsuke, inro and lacquer, furniture, textiles and more. The second session was Chinese art including jewelry, pottery, porcelain, rugs and metals.

Penn Fibre & Specialty Co. Inc. Nylon Price List and Color Chart
17 Penn Fibre & Specialty Co. Inc. Nylon Price List and Color Chart
Philadelphia, PA Penn Fibre Specialty Co.Inc. Unknown date soft cover Good-plus condition
This is a rather plain price list, but the color chart inside is GREAT. Not only does it show all 14 colors, but it also includes a strip of each one which can be removed and put back into its opening. Amazing that they're all here! This company, located in Philadelphia, supplied customers with nylon, glass reinforced nylon, Teflon, Polyethelene, Polypropylene, Delrin, Celcon, Mylar Vinylite, Paper Boards, Hard Fibre, Fishpaper, Compressed Asbestos, Fabric Laminates, Epoxy Plant Fibre, Polycarbonates, and Polyurethane. The four page list was coming apart at the seam when I bought it, so I repaired it with stong fiberous Japanese paper which is very low-key. You'll hardly notice it. The items measure 9"x11".

Postcard She Sells, Sea Shells SIGNED by Artist L.E. Hick 1907
20 Postcard She Sells, Sea Shells SIGNED by Artist L.E. Hick 1907
Germany 1907 Very good
Cute little girl selling seashells from a basket. Pastel shades and a tongue twister too! "She sells sea shells. Here are the sea shells she sells!" The card is signed on the lower left corner L.E. Hick, '07. I am not too familiar with this artist, but I have seen Hick cards with a Japanese scene, once again though it was someone selling something. This card is not postally used, but it has a name on the address portion of the divided back -- Arleigh White. The message reads, "Arleigh, do you remember me? I would like to see you. If you can't read what is on the other side of this card ask Paul to read it. Rose K." Card is clean with just a little darkening at the lower left corner. Will arrive in a plastic sleeve.
