A Brilliant History Jewels at Sotheby's (1978)
1 A Brilliant History Jewels at Sotheby's (1978)
London Sotheby's 1978 Card cover Fine condition
This is an unusual catalog for an auction, even by Sotheby's many handsome examples. This one features a famous person on each page -- the Duchess of Windsor, Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, Edna Winston, Elton John, Countess Mona Bismarck, the Count and Countess du Boisrouvray, Ava Gardner, Helene Beaumont, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and Marlene Dietrich. The jewels are top drawer from the most revered jewelers in the world and each is beautifully described. Catalog is printed on glossy paper throughout. The back paper which appears to be obstructing the photos, are just narrow strips with info on both sides. Catalog is clean and gorgeous with no names or writing. It measures 9" x 10-1/2". Very special. (Advertising)

Aldens Fall and Winter 1951-52 Catalog
2 Aldens Fall and Winter 1951-52 Catalog
Chicago Aldens 1951 Autumn and Winter 1951-52 Soft cover Good condition
I wish the previous owner hadn't used the front cover as a scratch pad to see how much it would cost to buy two items. I wish even more that he or she had tried to erase it, maybe because the answer is wrong! Anyway this is a very nice catalog. I don't know this company and have never seen one of their catalogs, but I very much like the size which is easily handled at 5-1/2" x 9-1/2". The catalog has a whopping 972 pages of fashions for the whole family, toys, jewelry, engagement rings, household items, furniture, guns, shoes, typewriters and much more. This is a complete immersion into material culture at the beginning of the 50's -- 65 years ago. The order blank is still inside and has not been used. Only other fault is creasing to lower corners both front and back, but both have been discretely taped for strength.

3 Baird-North Facsimile 1913 Catalog Diamonds Watches Jewelry Silverware
Des Moines, Iowa Wallace-Homestead Book Company 1992 Facsimile Reprint soft cover Fine condition
Crisp clean catalog with only fault being a small name sticker to upper front corner of first page. Otherwise without fault. The Baird-North Company operated from Providence, Rhode Island where they sold diamonds, watches, jewelry and silverware. This catalog, a facsimile reprint, is spectacular with much product, many saturated pictures, and accompanied by descriptions. Catalog measures 7" x 10" and has 200 pages. An original is scarce and would price in three figures.

Sackville, New Brinswick CANADA Mount Allison Ladies College 1925 soft cover Very good condition
This 1925-26 catalog for aspiring students is filled with wonderful full page black and white photographs of the important places of the college -- an outside view, the common room, the reception room, the dining room, the Owens Museum of Fine Arts, the conservatory of music, a room in the art studio with students painting, a student room, two rooms in the Science Hall, outdoor drills, the swimming pool, jewelry made by students, handpainted dishes by students and the hospital. The catalog measures 6" x 8"-1/2" with 114 pages plus back matter. In addition to information about classes and life at college there are many names of alumni and graduates which can be interesting for family genealogy and archives. The former owner's name is written on the top front cover -- Mable B. Fraser. (I can't make out the middle name.)

Cowell & Hubbard:The Couturier Collection (Surprise Cover)
7 Cowell & Hubbard:The Couturier Collection (Surprise Cover)
Cleveland, Ohio Cowell & Hubbard Unknown (Presumed 80's) Unknown Card cover Very good condition
The cover of this trade catalog presented by Cowell and Hubbard, Cleveland, Ohio's premiere jewelry store from 1861. It looks like the title box is falling off and the cover is wrinkled. But, no! It's flat and smooth -- the design tricked the eye. What also makes this catalog so interesting is the pairing of expensive fine jewelry with couture clothing designed by Bill Blass, Adele Simpson, Ralph Lauren and others. Catalog measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" with 72 pages. There's also an order blank which folds into an envelope -- unused. Unfortunately, there is no date and no clues. I came to the conclusion that it might be from the 80's because of a long sleeved wedding dress with a hat.

8 Elizabeth Taylor A to Z: A Publication to Celebrate the Dynamic Life and Collections of Elizabeth Taylor
New York Christies 2011 Card cover Very good condition
This is the most unusual auction catalog ever. Yes, it has her clothes and jewelry on the block, but a good bit of the text is about her life covering art, Art Nouveau, Belle Epoque, her movie Boom!, Richard Burton, Chanel, Dior, Egyptian Revival, Emeralds, Exotica, Feathers, the Golden Charm Braclet, handbags, the Iguana Brooch, Jewelry, Kaftans, Lavender, M.G. M. Studios, National Velvet, Oscars, La Peregrina, Philanthropy, the Queen, Rubies, Saphires, Mike Todd, Turquoise, Ungaro, Valentino,Versace, Volbracht, Warhol, and XY and Z. Lion Brand Milk Premium Catalog The Magic Door
10 Lion Brand Milk Premium Catalog The Magic Door
Brooklyn, New York Nestle's Milk Products soft cover Good
Scarce premium booklet for Lion Brand Condensed and Evaporated Milks. There is curiously no date on this, but it appears to be from the 1920's. Research shows that the premium program was in effect as early as 1915 and was suspended in May of 1943 and all premium stores were closed due to war shortages. The book measures 4" across by 10" tall and has 26 pages of gifts to choose from including toys, household goods, jewelry, sports equipment etc. But the most interesting part is of interest to those who collect Girl Scout and Boys Scout ephemera. The book shows a page each for this with multiple pictured items. Book is clean and tightly bound, but the plain back cover shows a small stain at the bottom edge and a bit of flat wrinkling.

Metal Craft Supply Company Catalog (1948)
11 Metal Craft Supply Company Catalog (1948)
Providence, Rhode Island Metal Crafts Supply Company 1948 Card cover Good condition
Very nice catalog -- clean and bright inside with no names or writing. There's a few spots of edge wear and rubbing to edges at back, and darkening at spine, but overall it's quite good with a tight binding. The company provided equipment and supplies for brass, pewter, aluminum, silver and copper work. Items included are metals in sheet and wire form, hammers, mallets, anvils, solders, enamels, stones, findings, and etching and polishing materials. Many black and white photos and drawings. VERY attractive!

Navajo Indian Silversmith Plying His Trade Color Postcard
12 Navajo Indian Silversmith Plying His Trade Color Postcard
Gallup, Bew Mexico J.R. Willis Very good
A visually interesting postcard in unused condition. There is a number in the lower right corner -- 1A1436 and at the upper right C.25. Prinred in the dividing line on back are the words "C.T. American Art-Colored." Also on the reverse side there is this description printed above the message box, "Da Pah, a Navajo Indian Silversmith working in his hogan in Gallup, N.M., in which more silver is produced within a radius of forty miles of here than at any other point. His skillful work is done with the primitive tools shown in the picture. His materials are coin silver and turquoise, the silver is heated and then hammered to suit his purpose. Genuine Indian jewelry is much in demand on account of its beauty and original design, there never being two pieces alike." I am not certain of the date, but suspect it's circa 1930 because it came from a lot of Southwest travel material from that period most of which is dated in the early 30's.

Oriental Art Catalog August 27, 88, 1970 Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc.
13 Oriental Art Catalog August 27, 88, 1970 Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc.
East Dennis, Massachsuetts Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc. 1970 Card cover Very good condition
Catalog is clean and bright with no tears and no writing, and is tightly bound. The only fault is a trim to the yapped edge at side edge of front cover. This is often done because the overhang develops small tears which end up with pieces of the edge falling off. This trim was better than most. The catalog measures 7" x 10-1/2" and has black and white photographs which show both Chinese and Japanese items. Most of the works came from the estate of Andrew R. Dole of Oak Park, Illinois. Session I focused on Japanese art. Among the items were prints and paintings, snuff bottles, rugs, wood carvings, sculpture, ivory, netsuke, inro and lacquer, furniture, textiles and more. The second session was Chinese art including jewelry, pottery, porcelain, rugs and metals.

Palm Beach Jewelry and Antique Show 2004 catalog (and Newspaper)
14 Palm Beach Jewelry and Antique Show 2004 catalog (and Newspaper)
USA UBS Main sponsor 2004 February 13-17 Card cover Very good
This is not an auction catalog. The treasures are placed in booths where vendors answer questions, offer information, and in the end seal a deal that make both seller and buyer leave happy. What's interesting of course is the items presented in the catalog as advertising. All are on golssy paper and in full color. The newspaper was from the Palm Beach News highlighting art, jewelry and antiques not only over the counter, but also in seminars. A few titles are these: The Inside Story -- Behind Some of the World's Great Jewels; The Connoisseur's Heart -- the Joy of Living With Antiques and Art; and Collecting Faberge. The catalog shows a bit of wear to cover's edges, but is clean and tightly bound. There are some names written at the front, but none cause a problem. The catalog measures 9" x 11" and has 83 pages.

15 Prairie Edge Creators of Plains Indian Art, Artifacts and Jewelry Catalog (circa 1970's)
Rapid City, South Dakota Prairie Edge circa 1970's Soft cover Very good condition
I have never before see this catalog, but it certainly is attractive, especially if you like Native American art of many kinds. Among the items, all of which are pictured in full color with descriptions are shields, clothing, jewelry, pipes, bags and purses, lances, axes, hair pipe chokers, drums and animal skulls, among others. The catalog is not dated, but it appears to be from the 70's. It measures 7-1/2" x 9" and has 47 pages.

Sotheby's Auction The Estate of Jacqueliine Kennedy Onassis April 23-26, 1996
16 Sotheby's Auction The Estate of Jacqueliine Kennedy Onassis April 23-26, 1996
New York, New York Sotheby's 1996 Card cover Very good condition
This is a large and beautiful auction catalog which was published after Jackie's death. The book is clean and nice, but it does have a couple defects. I don't know if the absentee form was loose, or not, but if the previous owner put it in it's with white tape on one side. The only other problem is that the form is a small bit bigger than the other pages. The catalog shows many lovely photographs with Jackie and JFK, with their children, and their family. There is biographical info and pages of lovely rooms and many stunning items -- American decorative arts and furniture; American paintings, antiquities, books and manuscripts, contemporary art, European furniture, gneral fine arts, Impressionist paintings, Indian and SE Asian art, jewelry, fashion, 19th century European paintings, Old Master paintings, porcelain, prints, rugs and carpet, Russian icons and art; and silver. The catalog measures 9" x 11-1/2" and includes all 1195 items. P.S. I forgot that there is a crease on the spine, likely because of the huge number of pages. The crease in no ways inmpinges on the spine.

Steuben Glass Catalog and Price List 1980-1981
17 Steuben Glass Catalog and Price List 1980-1981
New York City Steuben Glass 1980 Card cover Very good condition
Steuben Glass always has beautiful items, but this one is exceptionally good. A card laid-in indicates that it's a Christmas catalogue which is why there is jewelry, presentation items, engraved items and various designers. You can check each potential gift with the price list. The catalog measures 5-3/4" x 7-1/4" and has 223 pages. The photographs are plentiful and full page in both black and white and color. In addition to the price list and the card is an unused order form. The catalog is clean and bright with no spine crease and no names or writing. The lower front corner shows a small crease and a small bit of color loss. I reglued the paper of the corner and put the catalog in the book press which got it to lie flat.

A very nice and very early issue of The Harvard Illustrated Magazine -- only the second of the first volume to be published. Measures 7-1/2"x9-3/4" and is very clean and tightly bound. Faults are confined to a small bit of wear to tail of spine, a snipped corner at upper back. a crease and softening to lower back corner, and a bit of paper from the cover adhered to first page near gutter. Pristine cover and pages. Illustrated nicely with photographs and art including a full page color image of the American flag and two other works of art sporting a color wash.
