Chautauqua Summer Center For Music and Drama Season Program 1942 (Plus Related Ephemera)
1 Chautauqua Summer Center For Music and Drama Season Program 1942 (Plus Related Ephemera)
Chautauqua, New York Chautauqua Institution June, 1942 Vol. 7 No. 117 soft cover Very Good
Very nice clean program which shows the schedule for the entire summer of music and theatre at Chautauqua during the summer of 1942, as well as articles and photographs of the performers. Measures 8-1/2"x 11-1/4" and has 32 pages. There is a vertical crease down the center from having been folded, as so many programs were, but the crease is light. What's interesting about this particular one is the stuff I found inside. The previous owner was a young woman, Elizabeth Lorson, from Wooster, Ohio who was in New York City hoping to be taken on by a voice trainer of merit. Someone from back home wrote the following Western Union telegram (includes envelope) to her which was sent to the Parnassus Club in 1941. It reads, "Fear not about missing the boat. Most likely overcrowded. Anyway advise trying man Genevieve works with Sidney Dietch. His approach remotely like Griffith. Feel winter in New York with right teacher most valuable. You can always come home to me if conditions unhappy. Will write very soon. Lovingly, Eve." Dietch was one of the very finest in the city. Also, included is a postcard stating that the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra would be broadcasted on the radio August 10th, 1941. The message on the reverse is written by the young lady seeking a voice teacher. It reads "Just got mother's letter telling me May is probably coming. Will sure be glad to see who ever comes. Don't suppose you'd get this before Saturday. Will write soon. Love, Betty." She apparently was part of the music program at Chautauqua in 1941. The final item is a photo of an opera singer named Helen Jepson previously from Akron, Ohio, clipped from an unknown source. Wooster is close enough to Akron to have inspired Betty! (Elizbeth)

Ethel Franklin Botts Print 1906 (Children With Grandma)
5 Ethel Franklin Botts Print 1906 (Children With Grandma)
Unknown 1906 Very Good
This is a lovely print which captures a sweet moment of children enjoying the treats brought by an old lady. It was rendered by Ethel Franklin Botts, a student of the great Howard Pyle, as was Jessie Wilcox Smith. Her style is a bit different though with a hint of a collage look at times. She was very prolific and an important illustrator of the day. I don't know exactly what children's book this print derives from, but I do know that it's an illustration for a James Whitcomb Riley poem. The book was published in 1906. Clearly, this was a page of the book - I purchased it from a long time dealer who salvaged plates from disbound and damaged children's books. He was NOT a breaker. The print measures 6-1/2"x9-1/4" with the image measuring 5"x7-1/4". There is a remnant of paper from another page at left margin, but will not appear after framing. Several different scenes from same book available.

First Ladies Paper Dolls, Series #1, Dolls 1-8
6 First Ladies Paper Dolls, Series #1, Dolls 1-8
Canton, Ohio J.J. Kaboth Canton Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) 1996 First Series Fine condition
These are new to me. I just got them yesterday and have never seem them before. It looks like the local DAR had them made as a fundraiser. Each doll is in its original packaging and have not been opened. The blue paper at the top offers each lady's biography. The dolls and the inaugural dresses are on the front of each, but you can turn the package over and there's another costume -- two sheets per package. The ladies are as follows: Caroline Scott Harrison, Julia Dent, Grant; Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt; Florence Kling Harding ; Eleanor Roosevelt; Mamie Doud Eisenhower; Nancy Davis Reagan; and Barbara Pierce Bush. There's also a desciption of "THE DRESs" at the bottom of each.

French Tinted Postcard Beautiful Woman in Garden
7 French Tinted Postcard Beautiful Woman in Garden
Paris Reutlinger No date Near Fine
The tinting of this card is so subtle you don't notice it at first glance. But there are green leaves and a pale pink gown. I'm not sure what this lovely lady is doing, but she's definitely in a flower garden. The card has not been used, so no real clue to date. But it appears to be from the early 1900's. The back is not divided and bears no writing. Up in the left hand corner at front it says that it's part of series no. 12.

Hollywood Magazine July, 1937 (Myrna Loy Cover)
8 Hollywood Magazine July, 1937 (Myrna Loy Cover)
Fawcett 1937 Soft Cover Very good
The paper is crisp and clean on the cover of this vintage movie mag on which Myrna Loy looks lovely in geeen against a bright yellow backdrop. Back cover shows one small tear to the bottom edge which lies flat and has been neatly repaired by me with non-browning, archival tape to reverse side. Staples rusty, but no other faults. Stories cover the coronation of King George VI, Tyrone Power, Spencer Tracy, Mae West and more. Great ads too -- full color boating ad for Chesterfield cigarettes at back cover, plus one in color at front for Lovely Lady face powder.

Photograph 19th century Ohio Home and Family
9 Photograph 19th century Ohio Home and Family
Ohio, unknown town No photographer stated No date Very good condition
I've had this photo for quite some time, but went looking for it after a friend bought one last week that looked like it. But when I found mine it was close, but no cigar. sS now that it's out of the closet -- here it is! The house has an impressive lintel for its rather modest size and the door has sidelights. There's also a plant in the left one if you look carefully. I thought at first it was a farmhouse, but that's definitely a sidewalk along the fence. As for the people -- there are no names on the back. We should always, always, always write names. There are two ladies in aprons on the left,a lady sitting on the stoop with a little boy, a second little boy staning s to the right wearing suspenders and a hat and there is a couple under the window on the right. The image measures 7-1/4" x 9-1/4" and the entire picture, including the mount board, is 10-3/4" x 13-1/4" There's a small stain at the bottom of the gray border, but it could be covered when framed.

Photograph Taylorsville, Indiana Family On the Porch 1909
10 Photograph Taylorsville, Indiana Family On the Porch 1909
Taylorsville, Indiana Unknown photographer 1909 Hard backing
This is a remarkably sharp photo with great contrast. The only reason I know that it was a warm day in 1909 Taylorsville,Indiana is the pencilled date and place on the back. There is much here to tell you such things as the homeowner's appreciation of decorative pots of flowers and their liking of rocking chairs. Even the little boy is rocking on a rocking horse. But the thing I noticed first was the young man off to the left of the porch. If you look at the young lady in the white dress ON the porch you can see she is not pleased with him. He's not even looking at her, nor is he engaging with the whole group. The photo was mounted on the gray board used to mount ohotographs at the turn of the century, but there is evidence here that someone cut it down to just the photo. The two lower corners lost the top layer of paper also, so to keep it from deteriorating I repaired it with grey art paper (see second photo). The image measures 7-3/4" x 9-3/4".

Photograph Three Generations In the Arbor
11 Photograph Three Generations In the Arbor
Unknown Origina No photographer Named 1890's Very good condition
A three generation picture -- mother, maybe an aunt, young daugher, and grandmother standing under a leafy arbor. Grandma is holding her cane. At first I thought it was odd because the end of the cane looked like a golf club. But then I got out my magnifying glass and saw that what I was seeign was the foot belonging to the lady in the light colored dress. The photo measures 5-1/2" x 6-1/2" with its cardboard "mat. The paste-on photo iteself measures 4" x 5". The back shows a small bit of wear to lower right corner and a small loss of outer paper to top edge.

12 Postcard Fred Harvey's Lunch Room Union Station, Chicago (1920's)
Fred Harvey 1920's Very Good Condition
This card is unused, so no dates written by sender and no post mark. The only clue to find a date here is the pink cloche hat on the lady in the foreground next to the two men. The cloche hat is a Roaring Twenties fashion favorite. Fred Harvey was the restaurant king of his day. This one was beautiful and located in the Chicago train station. Card is clean and nice and will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.

Postcards Blue Hole, Castalia, Ohio (4 views)
14 Postcards Blue Hole, Castalia, Ohio (4 views)
Sandusky, Ohio Rich-Holt Circa 1960's (Unknown) Very good
Here we have four different postcards and four views, all showing off the beautiful, mysterious Blue Hole of Castalia, Ohio, located six miles west of Sandusky. It was once a tourist destination, but is no longer open. The night shot of the hole captures beautifully the intense color of the water. Also, interesting is the giant water wheel and lady wearing high heels as she stands on the rocks to see it! The other two cards show different angle of the hole by day. All four cards are unused and are chrome. Divided backs. Each will arrive in its own plastic sleeve.

Real Photo Postcard Smiling Group Young Man with Two Dolls
15 Real Photo Postcard Smiling Group Young Man with Two Dolls
AZO Very Good
This is a most interesting group of people. Every one of them is SMILING which was not too common. The older woman in the white blouse has her arms around the two people next to her and the young girl next to the guy with the dolls is looking across at the older woman. If I were to guess I'd say the lady to the far right is Grandma, the older woman in the white blouse is her daughter and the two young adults are the daughter's kids. Note that both "kids" have their legs stretched out in front of them. The young man is wearing a hat and for some reason is laughing and holding two odd dolls. The other mystery is the date because AZO's name with four triangles facing up in the corners of the postage box indicates that the date is unknown.

Real Photo Postcard Woman Big Hat and Locket, Newark, Ohio
16 Real Photo Postcard Woman Big Hat and Locket, Newark, Ohio
Newark, Ohio AZO Very good
Such a pleasant-looking lady, seemingly small in stature, yet wearing an enormous hat which looks like it's wearing her! But she still manages to be pretty and her locket and lacy dress are charming. This card was never sent. In the lower right hand corner there is an embossed name and address of the studio which took the picture, but some of the raised letters have disappeared with no loss of color, oddly enough. What I can make out is "East ---- Studio, 225 E. Main, Newark, Ohio. Card shows a light crease to lower corner where the studio address is and a touch of wear to the tip of the corner opposite.

Real Photo Postcard. Lady Dressed up Sitting on Split Rails
17 Real Photo Postcard. Lady Dressed up Sitting on Split Rails
Unknown location AZO paper early 1900's Good-plus condition
This is a charming photo which melds glamour with the mundane. The pretty young woman is dressed to "the nines" with a feather in her hat, a high-necked blouse and a chic suit and narrow black boots. She also holds a small purse in one hand with the other hand leaning on a rail. The question is why is she out in the middle of nowhere sitting on a collapsed or not yet put together, rail fence. We'll never know, but it makes a lovely picture. The card isn't perfect -- there's a small crease to upper right corner and a flat crease to the right next to the margin. The card was never witten on and there is no stamping. card will arrive in brand new plastic sleeve.

Real Photo Tinted Postcard Blond German Woman in Evening Dress (6336/6) 1920
18 Real Photo Tinted Postcard Blond German Woman in Evening Dress (6336/6) 1920
Germany Unknown 1920 Fine
Crisp as new postcard which has not been used. We know it's a real tinted photo as it shows the NBC company logo at the space for the postage stamp. Unfortunately, there are no dates available for NBC, so no clues to age. The card has not been used postally, but it does show a message in German on the opposite side of the divided back and the date 11/11/20. The subject is very pretty in evening clothes. Card will arrive in plastic sleeve.

Silver Jubilee Our Lady of Lourdes Church Dedication February 11, 1982 (Florida)
19 Silver Jubilee Our Lady of Lourdes Church Dedication February 11, 1982 (Florida)
Florida Our Lady of Lourdes Church 1982 soft cover Very good condition.
Very nice, clean booklet commemorating the dedication of the new Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Only fault is a flat crease to lower front corner of cover. Oddly, there is no reference to the exact town in Florida where it's located, but there is a photo of the presiding Bishop of Orlando, Thomas J. Grady. This is an exceptional keepsake thanks to the many photographs, including some in full color, plus lots of photos of the parishioners in action. There's also history and a roster of the patrons who helped make the new church possible. As always with these momentos, there are ads at the back of the book, but they aren't overwhelming. Some of these have more ads than content but this isn't one of them. Book measures 8-1/2" x 11".
