1 "Seated at the organ I was weary and ill at ease" The Lost Chord Vintage Postcard
New York The Knapp Company Unknown Near fine
This is the prettiest card I've seen using a line from F. Earl Christy's poem "The Lost Chord." Most of them are in black and white with a rather disheveled background, though more of the verse. This shows only the first line -- clearly it's part of a series -- which reads "Seated one day at the organ I was weary and ill at ease ..." The small center graphic is lovely and makes for an understated, elegant card. It has not been postally used and there is no writing. It's numberd 381.

Aishet Hayil (Art Catalog 1993)
3 Aishet Hayil (Art Catalog 1993)
New York, New York Yeshiva University Museum 1993 soft cover Near fine
Very beautiful exhibition catalog in lovely condition. A soft cover book is wrapped around completely with the treal colored "jacket" which may have had a ribbon tie given the two slots for one, but doesn't require it, as the jacket stays closed without it.The exhibition is an artistic interpretation of the only Biblical hymn to wome -- Aishet Hayil. As such 32 artists were igven a line of the poem of that name to interpret with their art. The collective works are a tribute to one woman -- Julia Kiener Forchheimer (1900-1991) who opened the handweaving department in the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem in 1936.Illustrated with color photographs of the art with accompanying text. Measures 5"x8-1/2". Also included is a brochure for the Prelude Gallery laid-in.

There are many Midwestern railways mentioned here, but the star is the one on the cover -- The North Shore Line. Booklet is clean and nice with just a few small spots to back cover

Blanche Lizzell and the Color Woodcut (Art Exhibition Catalog 2002)
5 Blanche Lizzell and the Color Woodcut (Art Exhibition Catalog 2002)
Boston, Mass. MFA Publications 2002 soft cover Good-plus
Wow -- what a beautiful catalog this is! The color woodcuts are just charming and the catalog is very clean and mostly very, very nice. But it looks as though someone set a wet glass on it inside the cover. (See second photo) Consequently there are some light pink spots to reverse side of cover and a slight bit of crinkliness to the area where the glass was, though I have pressed it much flatter in the book press and it covers just a few pages at front. The rest is pristine and no images are involved. The good news about this is the price! I reduced it considerably. Blanche Lazell (1878-1956) was a printmaker, painter and designer, but she is best known for her white line woodcut technique based on the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print. Catalog measures 8-1/2x9-1/2" and has 96 pages which include two essays. Exhibit was shown in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Cleveland Museum of Art and Elvehjem Museum in Madison, Wisconsin.

Compagnie Generale Transatlantique French Line
7 Compagnie Generale Transatlantique French Line "Liberte"
Paris French Line 1950's soft cover Very good
Beautiful travel guide to the luxury of the French Line's star ship "Liberte" which was purchased to replace the Normandie. It had previously been the Europa, but was bought due to its high speed turbine engine for service to the French Line. However, two disasters -- breaking away from her moorings and crashing into a wrecked ship and later a fire caused a delay of five years -- but when Liberte finally made her debut she wowed them! Guide shows art renderings of all the many amenities, plus inset photographs. The whole theme is one of a dreamy Valentine to the "good life." Measures 8-1/4"x10-1/2" and has 32 pages including a centerfold of the ship in full color.Clean and nice -- no date, but circa 1950's.

Chicago; Omaha; Sioux City, Neb.; Los Angeles Cudahy's Packing Company No date. Circa early 1900's card Very good
This one's not at all rare because it was too cute not to keep! It still charms collectors though and has even inspired modern look-alikes in the forms of magnets. This guy's the real deal though! He measures 2-1/2" across at the widest point, which is his feet, and 6" from the top of crown to the bottom of his feet. "King Pig" sits up and begs to be part of the "Rex Brand" line of meats packed by the Cudahy Company. Both front and back sides of the card are identical. Inside the text covers the celebrated Rex Brand sugar cured meats, pure leaf lard, Cudahy's sugar cured hams, breakfast bacon, Rex Brand extract of beef and Cudahy's Essence of Pepsin should you eat too much of the other stuff! Formfit In Show Business (Formfit Lingerie Sales Brochure and 33-1/3 RPM Record)
10 Formfit In Show Business (Formfit Lingerie Sales Brochure and 33-1/3 RPM Record)
Formfit Uknowm 50s'-60's softcover Very Good
Quirky, fun collectible and probably the oddest thing I ever bought. No date on this one, but clothing on drawings would indicate late 50's to early 60's. Bright pink sales brochure was issued to the would-be Formit lingerie salesperson, or as they say on the record, "corsetiere!" Inside it says, "Join Betsy White for a preview in sound of your Show Business Career." This is augmented by a drawing of the stylish Betsy White, a female salesperson holding up a girdle, and a funky picture of an early 20th century chorus line which doesn't seem to really have anything to do with anything. The record plays great and is laugh-out-loud funny. Includes music! Brochure opens as a trifold with photo of president of the company at center. Only defect of note are two closed tears over the area that holds the 33-1/3 rpm record.

Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
11 Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
Kansas Fred Harvey Restaurants 1945 card cover Very good
Fred Harvey was a restaurant phenomenon. On this menu it sums up his amazing growth with this line, "from Cleveland to the Pacific coast." This particular menu was printed for the restaurant located in Union Station, Los Angeles and dated Monday, May 28, 1945. In addition to the patriotic cover it's interesting to see how much food has changed in America. Of course the prices are give-away by today's standards -- imagine a cocktail for 35 cents -- but you would rarely see such offerings as what Fred Harvey was serving up for lunch in '45. How about some braised smoked beef tongue with noodles and raisin sauce? Or maybe "our own baked beans with salt pork"? Nice collectible.

13 Inside Ohio Magazine: Panorama of the 17th State (1953)
Toledo, Ohio Inside Ohio Magazine 1953 Volume 2, Number 8 soft cover Good
Inside Ohio magazine was in its second year of publication when this issue was produced. It's not seen too much which is too bad because it has a lot to offer. There are color paintings, photographs and articles about many aspects of the state. Here, for example, the topcs include the iron men, tool builders, a history in old newspapers starting in the late 1700's, the Ohio auto industry sub-assembly line, Ohio's advanced electric power production, education, science, transportation, communication, and the beloved Wright Brothers and aviation. Magazine measures 8-1/2" x 11-1/2" and has 114 pages. Faults are confined to a crease to lower front corner and a small abrasion to back cover.

Ken Magazine August 25, 1938 (Hemingway, Jack London, Germany, the Reich)
14 Ken Magazine August 25, 1938 (Hemingway, Jack London, Germany, the Reich)
Chicago Ken Inc. 1938 Vol. 2, No. 4 Soft cover Very Good
Ken magazine launched on April 7, 1938 via the founders of Esquire, but it lasted just a scant two years with two issues a month. It was political and controversial, so much so that Ernest Hemingway stopped writing for it after 14 issues. He's here in this issue though with an article titled Good Generals Hold the Line. The magazine is oversized at 10" x 13-1/2" with 86 pages. Other articles include the price of a debut for young women, Microbes Join the Army, Safe Government Broadcasting, Prelude To American Fascism, a nice article about author, Jack London, and more. Magazine is in good, clean, tightly bound condition. Two small flat creases to upper front corner and a scratch to green area on model's forehead. Very attractive overall.

Leather Postcard Here's My Postal Card Mailman Mailbox
16 Leather Postcard Here's My Postal Card Mailman Mailbox
1906 Very good
Novelty postcards are fun and this leather one is perfect for a collector of postcards -- as it expresses the idea of trading cards with firneds to build a collection -- "Here's My Postcal Card Send Me Yours, I Am Collecting Post Cards." Under this is a line for adding one's name and Charles Patton took advantage of it. He mailed the card Dec. 3, 1907 from Warren, Ohio to Miss Edina Vanderslice of Garrettsville, Ohio.

Matson Lines Mardi Gras Dinner Menu (February 15, 1968)
17 Matson Lines Mardi Gras Dinner Menu (February 15, 1968)
Honolulu, Hawaii Matson Lines 1968 Card cover
A beautiful painting of a scene in Fiji is perfect for the Matson Lines which was located in Hawaii. Mostly they carried cargo, but they also had passenger liners which went From L.A. and San Francisco to Hawaii, to other exotic islands, and even as far as Australia and New Zealand. But along came a spike in modern air travel and Matson's liners were making fewer forays. By 1970 they were done. The liner for which this menu derived was the S.S. Lurline. The menu took a southern slant with Carnival lobster cocktail, jumbo prawns a la Creole, spouther fired breast of chicken, southern ambrosia and Dixie chocolate cake. Menu measures 9" x 12".

Menu Act I Restaurant New York
18 Menu Act I Restaurant New York
New York City Act I No date Card Fine condition
Very attractive menu for a restaurant that was clearly located in the theater district. There is no date and no city, but there IS a very good clue. At the bottom of the central panel of the menu is this comment, "Act I has a "Hot Line" telephone to Golden Theatre Ticket Service -- we will make ticket reservations for you directly from the reservation desk on the 16th floor." I'm almost certain that Act I was a New York City restaurant because the Golden ticket service remains there. Here's an example of the prices -- prime rib $7.25; Cornish hen Kiev $5.75; and whole stuffed lobster $8.75. This colorful menu measures 8-1/2" x 15" and is clean and crisp

Navajo Indian Silversmith Plying His Trade Color Postcard
19 Navajo Indian Silversmith Plying His Trade Color Postcard
Gallup, Bew Mexico J.R. Willis Very good
A visually interesting postcard in unused condition. There is a number in the lower right corner -- 1A1436 and at the upper right C.25. Prinred in the dividing line on back are the words "C.T. American Art-Colored." Also on the reverse side there is this description printed above the message box, "Da Pah, a Navajo Indian Silversmith working in his hogan in Gallup, N.M., in which more silver is produced within a radius of forty miles of here than at any other point. His skillful work is done with the primitive tools shown in the picture. His materials are coin silver and turquoise, the silver is heated and then hammered to suit his purpose. Genuine Indian jewelry is much in demand on account of its beauty and original design, there never being two pieces alike." I am not certain of the date, but suspect it's circa 1930 because it came from a lot of Southwest travel material from that period most of which is dated in the early 30's.

20 Normandie Souvenir Number (The Shipbuilder Magazine June, 1935)
London Shipbuilder Magazine 1935 June, 1935 soft cover Good condition
Though this magazine leaves a bit to be desired due to creasing to cover, a small chip to outer edge of back cover and some paper loss to spine at top and bottom, it's a very desirable item. The entire issue is about the Normandie replete with several fold-out diagrams and gorgeous color paintings of the ship and its interior, plus photographs showing the machinery on board. One (in better condition) sold at auction for $598. The magazine is very large and measures 10" x 13" with 154 clean pages, plus several pages of ads.
