A Visitor's Map of Florence And Useful Notes for Tourists (circa 1926)
1 A Visitor's Map of Florence And Useful Notes for Tourists (circa 1926)
Florence, Italy Fratelli Alinari Art Reproductions (circa 1926) Circa 1926 soft cover Very Good
A very handsome fold-out map serves as the centerpiece to this Italian tourist brochure. The map shows numerous ads on one side for tourist items such as Italian leather goods and the map itself on the reverse. It is oddly undated, but one of the ads for purses offers a clue when it announces that the company which placed it won the Grand Prix for embroidery in London and Paris in 1926. Brochures also offers an 7 day itinerary for a trip to Florence and information on hotels. Wonderful addition to a collection of travel ephemera from the Golden Age. Measures 5-1/2"x7-1/2" closed. Map opens to 18" wide and 15" tall.

East London Record, 1992 No. 15
8 East London Record, 1992 No. 15
London East London History Society 1992 No. 15 Card cover Fine condition
I bought a handful of these little magazines a week ago and am amazed at how interesting they are. Any issue is an Anglophile's delight. This issue offers the following articles: A Childhood in Bow; Frederick Rogers Bookbinder and Journalist; The Ingles of Limehouse; Satan, Sufragettes and Salvation; The Bethnal Green Tube Disaster; and They Carried the Banner. The latter is about education in poverty stricken neighborhoods. People were binding together to improve things, but chose a name which might be a little .... It was The King Edward Ragged School Youths' Institute and Christian Mission. Magazine measures 5-3/4" and 8-1/4" with 48 pages. Illustrated with black and white photographs with no defects.

Harper's Bazar December 15, 1988 (Embroidery, Fashion)
9 Harper's Bazar December 15, 1988 (Embroidery, Fashion)
Harper Brothers 1888 Vol. XXI No. 50 soft cover Very good
Though this is actually a magazine, it's printed in newspaper fashion and yet remains remarkably good. There are few tiny edge tears and a chip from the side of page one, but I have been able to mend all tears at folds with non-browning archival tape which is nearly invisible. When opened the magazine measures 12"x16-1/2". The two brown stickers on the face are the mailing labels to De Soto, Missouri. This is the Christmas issue so there are holiday stories, but also an article about embroideries at the London Arts and Crafts Exhibition as well as two pages devoted to embroidery patterns. There's also an article about fashions from New York and a page of art showing them.

Hearst's Magazine May, 1920 (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Howard Chandler Christy)
10 Hearst's Magazine May, 1920 (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Howard Chandler Christy)
New York, New York International Magazine Company 1920 Vol. XXXVII, No. 4 Soft cover Good-plus
Hearst Magazine was one of the most beautiful publications of the day. The cover art alone caught the readers' eyees while the huge content inside kept them reading. If you love short stories this is fiction heaven, but there's also articles too -- about J.P. Morgan's London residence, modern hotels, the DuPonts, science topics such as Luther Burbank and healthier babies and an article by West Virginia Senator David W. Elkins who opined that when it came to business, the United States Senate was 100 years behind the times. Also nice in this issue are illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy and true ghost stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Magazine is huge at 10-1/2" x 14". There's minor wear to lower edge of front cover, a few small spot of foxing at last couple pages and a small repair to top of spine with archival tape done by me. Ships for $2 in the U.S.

Ken Magazine August 25, 1938 (Hemingway, Jack London, Germany, the Reich)
11 Ken Magazine August 25, 1938 (Hemingway, Jack London, Germany, the Reich)
Chicago Ken Inc. 1938 Vol. 2, No. 4 Soft cover Very Good
Ken magazine launched on April 7, 1938 via the founders of Esquire, but it lasted just a scant two years with two issues a month. It was political and controversial, so much so that Ernest Hemingway stopped writing for it after 14 issues. He's here in this issue though with an article titled Good Generals Hold the Line. The magazine is oversized at 10" x 13-1/2" with 86 pages. Other articles include the price of a debut for young women, Microbes Join the Army, Safe Government Broadcasting, Prelude To American Fascism, a nice article about author, Jack London, and more. Magazine is in good, clean, tightly bound condition. Two small flat creases to upper front corner and a scratch to green area on model's forehead. Very attractive overall.

London Midland & Scottish Railway 1928 Brochure (Folds out to 21
12 London Midland & Scottish Railway 1928 Brochure (Folds out to 21"x36" Color Map at Back)
London McCorquodale & Co. Ltd. 1928 soft cover Very good
Very nice-looking and very informative brochure which folds out to be enormous 21"x36" with a color map on one side and information and small photographs on the other. The photos front and back show two different Liverpool hotels. Advertising at face indicated that the railway was "the best way between Liverpool and London", but was also good for the midlands, Scotland, Wales and to and from Ireland. Also noted is the fact that it was the route of the LMS special trains between Liverpool and London "in connection" with Atlantic steamers. Brochure is clean and attractive with just a few small tears to folds repaired by me at back of map with non-browning almost invisible archival tape. Measures 3-1-2"x9" folded.

London Weekly Diary of Social Events 1962 (Mirabelle Hotel)
13 London Weekly Diary of Social Events 1962 (Mirabelle Hotel)
London London Diary Publications Ltd. 1962 soft cover Very good
These diaries were printed weekly for tourists to find info on entertainment, both static and changing, yet for some reason they aren't often seen. This one covers events from Sunday, July 8 to Saturday, July 14, 1962. The ad on the cover of this one is for the famous Mirabelle Restaurant located in London's Mayfair area. The restaurant opened in 1936, but became the rage during the 50's and 60's. Someone covered the ad with an expansive signature, but I can only read the first name which is Mickey. The surname is a mystery. The booklet measures 4"x7" and has 64 pages, including some black and white pictorial advertising. It's clean and bright inside and out. Only fault is a bit of paper loss to deckled edge of front cover.

On Either Side London and North Eastern Railway (circa 1930's)
14 On Either Side London and North Eastern Railway (circa 1930's)
England London and Noeth Eastern Railway No date. Circa 1930's Card cover Very good condition
This is a very unique and clever title for a trip via railroad. The booklet has been folded in half which may, or may not, have been the idea, but it certainly urged the tourist to do it, thanks to the split design and its title. "On either side" means the traveler could see points of interest in one direction looking out at London (King's Cross) and Edinburgh, Waverley, Fort William, Inverness and Aberdeen from one window and then out at it from a window of the other side of the tracks. There's many sites mentioned with depiction throughout, plus a nice fold-out map in color. The booklet is clean and attractive, though does show a few worn spots to the edges of the cover, primarily at the back. There is a vertical crease at both covers, but I used clear archival tape to support it from the inside (see photo). The brochure measures 8-1/2" x 8-3/4" and has 72 pages plus some extras.

15 Samuel Butnik's Europe: Drawings and Recollections 1955-56
Cleveland, Ohio Ohio Artists Now Publications 1994 Presumed first Card cover Very good condition
The artist, Samuel Butnik, is known as a painter, but this booklet is comprised of his drawings and commentary, all of which took place on the roads and waters of his European journey. He left his apartment in New York City and boarded a ship to London. That was the first stop which was followed by more, including Stockholm, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, and Spain. Surprisingly though the drawings were never painted. Booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 54 counted pages. Butnik was a Clevelander during his education at the Cleveland Institute of Art

Singin' in the Rain Souvenir Book London Palladium 1983 Starring Tommy Steele
17 Singin' in the Rain Souvenir Book London Palladium 1983 Starring Tommy Steele
1983 soft cover Good-plus
An extravaganza of a souvenir book! Not only is it oversized at 9"x12" and filled with glorious stills from production numbers, but it also has a fold-out at the back which has four perforated postcards. Amazing that they're still intact, but they are. The program is marred only by spots of ege wear to the black cover and a small flat crease to the lower front corner. Very nice and a souvenir of the FIRST stage production ever.

The English-Speaking Union Dartmouth House London 1926 Brochure
20 The English-Speaking Union Dartmouth House London 1926 Brochure
London The English-Speaking Union 1926 soft cover
Booklet has its faults, but is not commonly seen and is tightly bound and complete. The English-Speaking Union began in London in 1918, thanks to the efforts of journalist, Sir Evelyn Wrench. The goal, as stated on the top front banner of the brochure is "To draw together in the bond of comradeship the English-speaking peoples of the world." The organization continues today, both in the U.S. and Britain as an educational charity. In 1918 there were 774 members, but by the time this brochure came out there were 11,974. Headquarters were the Dartmouth House at 37 Charles Street, Berkely Square, London and very beautifully appointed inside and out. The drawings inside show the luxury -- the library, dining rooms, even bedrooms with private baths. The brochure measures 7"x10" and is printed on a lovely, heavy paper. There are 20 pages including 14 black and white photographs and a map inside the front cover. Faults include a light crease down the center from having been folded, though I was able to flatten it in the book press. There is also soiling to the cover, a few stains to outer edge at front, some yellowing to back, and a few small tears on bottom edge of cover.
