Clay -- March 19-June 16,1985 Dayton Insitute of Art Catalog
1 Clay -- March 19-June 16,1985 Dayton Insitute of Art Catalog
Dayton,Ohio Dayton Institute of Art Experiencenter 1985 soft cover Very Good
This one's a little hard to find, but worth the effort if you love sculpture. The Clay exhibit was one of a series of material-related themes. It showcases the works of a wide range of contemporary artists who work in clay, whether it be in vessel form, sculptural, or painterly. Artists included are: Robert Arneson (California), Rudy Autio (Montana), Robert Brady (California), Stephen De Stebler (CA), Richard Devore (Colorado), Jack Earl (Ohio), Raymond Elozua (N.Y.), Mary Frank (N.Y.), Viola Frey (CA), Andrea Gill (N.Y.), John Gill (N.Y.), Peter Gourfain (N.Y.), Robert Hudson, CA), John Kaneko (Michigan), Marilyn Levine (CA), Michael Lucero (N.Y.), John Mason (N.Y.), Judy Moonelis (N.Y.), Ron Nagle (CA), Kenneth Price (New Mexico), Richard Shaw (CA), Paul solder (CA), Rudolf Staffel (PA), Robert Turner (N.Y.), Peter Voulkos (CA), Patti Warashina (Washington), Beatrice Wood (CA) and Betty Woodman (N.Y. & Co.) Each artist is given a black and white photo of the work and ample commentary. Measures 8-1/4"x 8-1/2" and is clean and nice with no names or writing. Mild toning to spine area only fault.

Gragey and Mason Millinery Real Photo Postcard Storefront Women & Children
2 Gragey and Mason Millinery Real Photo Postcard Storefront Women & Children
Unknown Very good
This real photo postcard shows the storefront of a millinery shop the name of which appears on the outdoor valance at the top and also on both windows at front. Four women -- likely the milliners and their help and three children add interest. Unfortunately, the card was never mailed so we have no idea where this shop was located, but we CAN date it, as the stamp box shows that it was printed on AZO paper and the symbols show that it dates from 1910 to 1930. This is circa 1910. The divided back was printed upsidedown.

Liberty Magazine Sept. 8, 1934 (Erle Stanley Gardner)
3 Liberty Magazine Sept. 8, 1934 (Erle Stanley Gardner)
New York Liberty Publishing Corporation 1934 soft cover Good
Magazine isn't perfect, but what a find to see a short story, The Case of the Curious Bride, by Erle Stanley Gardner at the very back. He's not even on the cover! But Gardner's here and the story features one of his most popular characters -- Perry Mason. It's also nicely illustrated in vintage 30's style. The other interesting note is a rebuttal about women's intelligence by the novelist Kathleen Norris. The magazine is clean and tightly bound but shows small chips to bottom edge and a few tiny edge tears to outer side edges which I have repaired with very small pieces of invisible archival tape. Pages have toned evenly, but there is some foxing to the outer side edge of the front cover. Magazine measures 8-1/2"x11" and has 62 pages.

Real Photo Postcard People on a Hay Wagon (Ohio)
4 Real Photo Postcard People on a Hay Wagon (Ohio)
Marietta, Ohio M.P. Fischer Studio 1906 Very Good
Twenty people on a hay wagon and the poor horse get short-shrift, but what a fun real photo postcard. It was even taken by a photography studio. On the space provided beneath the image the sender wrote, Hello, Sister! How does this look? Sadie." When you flip the card over you find THREE postmarks -- the original comes from Gracey, Ohio followed by Caldwell, Ohio and finally to it's destination in Chandlersville, Ohio. The recipient was Mary Mason. Oh, and look closely -- Sadie put a small "x" on her dress so you can find her!

Real Photo Postcard Union Picnic St. Mary's, west Virginia 1911
5 Real Photo Postcard Union Picnic St. Mary's, west Virginia 1911
Unknown 1911 Very Good
How charming -- a picnic with no coolers, no grills, nothing but a pretty place, hampers of food, friends and family, and mown grass to sit on. This event took place in 1911 in the Ohio River town of St. Mary's, W. Va., a very small place which got its name from a man who claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary pass by on the river in a boat. The card was postmarked April 21, 1911 from St. Mary's and sent to Mary Morgan of Logan, Ohio. The message on the divided back reads, "Dear Cousin, Glad to hear from you. Am very busy, will answer your letter as soon as I can. A crowd of us were over home Sunday and spent the day. Sadie." Card has a glossy surface and is quite nice save a small crease to upper right corner.

The Style Crystal Issued Monthly for Cleveland Garment Saleswomen (1922), Mason, Alice
6 Mason, Alice The Style Crystal Issued Monthly for Cleveland Garment Saleswomen (1922)
Cleveland, Ohio The Cleveland Gar5ent Market 1922 Volume I, No. 12 soft cover Very good condition
This is a scarce little item -- VERY ephemeral with its modest format, plain paper, and small size. The booklet measures 4" x 8-1/2" and has eight interesting pages. The opening article explains what to expect for 1922's fall fashions. Halle's was almost entirely right on the money with school and college clothes and a sale on two pairs of shoes for the price of one. But one mishap spoiled the season. "There was one thing which the advertisers seemed to overlook and that is the fact that teachers as well as schoolchildren need school outfits." The next article is about Paris Impressions leading into the life of a saleswoman, her co-workers, and their well-known customers. Lots of names dropping on those pages! (Flip-box #2)

The Asian Art Collection at Oberlin College Volume LIII, 2003, Mason, Charles et al
7 Mason, Charles et al The Asian Art Collection at Oberlin College Volume LIII, 2003
Oberlin, Ohio Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin college 2003 Volume LIII Card cover Very good condition
This is a publication which I believe is published quarterly. This issue is very interesting because it focuses on the Asian Art Collection owned by the college. There are four articles on the subject: The History of the Asian Art Collection by Charles Mason; A Gift of Distinction -- New Year's Pine Tree Festival by Teisai Hokuba and Julie Davis; A Chinese Buddhist Stele -- Religious Meanings in Religious Iconography by James C. Dobbin; and the Asian Collection and Its Uses in Teaching -- Prints and Traditional Japanese Literature by Suzanne Gray. The magazine measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 88 pages printed on glossy coated pages. Many photographs in both black and white and color.

Ohio University Library 200 Years 1814-2014 (Bicentennial), Mason, Kate (editor)
8 Mason, Kate (editor) Ohio University Library 200 Years 1814-2014 (Bicentennial)
Athens, Ohio Ohio University Library 2000 Hard cover Fine condition No dustjacket as issued.
This is a gorgeous book filled with historical information, but also with colorful graphic photographs and floor plans. It's crisp and clean inside and out with a handsome hard cover binding. The book measures 8" x 11" and is a half inch thick (no numbers). Paging through it brought to my attention several facts such as these rules in 1814. "No student shall be allowed to have in his possession more than one book at any one time" and "No book shall be used by a student without being previously covered with a wrapper of paper." It's fun to see the years go by and the changes they bring with them. Would make a nice gift for an alum or a student ready for OU.

Reminiscences of a Bostonian. Susan Lawrence Oliver (1952), Oliver, Susan Lawrence
9 Oliver, Susan Lawrence Reminiscences of a Bostonian. Susan Lawrence Oliver (1952)
Boston, Massachusetts Self-published 1952 Hard cover Very good condition
A lovely memoir by a woman from Boston who shares her genealogy and the highlights of her life. It's a booklet in hard cover (only 88 pages), but she looks back to stories her family told and tells her own memories too -- school days, a family wedding, an afternoon with Julia Ward Howe, a burglar, a trip to Staten Island, movies and radio, an earthquake, a dog, the summer resorts and more. If you're wondering if she hangs on your family tree here's some info: her mother was Susan Lawrence Mason and was born in 1839. Susan Oliver's grandfather was Rev. Charles Mason, rector of St. Peter's Church and lived in a nice house at 4 Chestnut Street in Salem. Book measures 6" x 9-1/4". What a gem for the right person.
