1930 Liberty Magazine Calendar (1973 REPRINT Leslie Thrasher Art)
1 1930 Liberty Magazine Calendar (1973 REPRINT Leslie Thrasher Art)
Coshocton, Ohio Liberty Library Corporation 1973 soft cover Very good
I wish this were the original calendar from 1930, but it's very obvious that it's not given the advertising info on the front for Akron Industrial Metals Co. But it's still very cute and even threw recipients a bone since 1975 and 1930 shared common dates which meant it could actually be used. Fortunately it was not used, or all the pages may have been discarded. Every month shows a bright color image featuring cute kids rendered by Leslie Trhasher and original advertising on the back. The calendar measures 7"x12-1/2" and has a metal hanger at the top. Only fault is a small stain over the "y" in Liberty on the front.

1964 Official Program 12th Annual Cumberland Sports Car Races
2 1964 Official Program 12th Annual Cumberland Sports Car Races
U.S.A. Steel Cities Region Sports Car Club of America Inc. 1964 soft cover Very good condition
Very nice program for the races held at the Cumberland Municipal Airport May, 15, 16, 17, 1964. The event included the national championship and regional races. Previous owner penciled in notes for some races which could be easily removed, but you may not want to, as it shows who won etc. Program measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 20 pages including a blank one for notes which is unused. Includes auto related advertising. Faults are these: a tear to bottom of spine which I repaired with non-browning archival tape on both sides and a small stain to one page.

20 Play Books Saalfield Artcraft (1953)
3 20 Play Books Saalfield Artcraft (1953)
Akron. Ohio Saalfield Publishing 1953 soft cover in original box Very good condition
I grew up in Akron, Ohio home of the old and beloved Saalfield Publishing Company. The company was known for books in boxes such as this one and also its licensing for Shirley Temple books. Saalfield had novels too for older kids, so we never grew out of them until we weren't kids anymore. This particular box is new to me, but I would have loved it.The box says it contains 20 playbooks for drawing, coloring, picture hunts, riddles, connect the dots, games and mazes. Twenty it may have been, but it ended up housing 22 -- no repeats and no coloring. Fun gift! Measures 6" x 9". Books are clean and bright and box is sturdy. One corner is neatly repaired with brown tape.

Aishet Hayil (Art Catalog 1993)
5 Aishet Hayil (Art Catalog 1993)
New York, New York Yeshiva University Museum 1993 soft cover Near fine
Very beautiful exhibition catalog in lovely condition. As such 32 artists were igven a line of the poem of that name to interpret with their art. The collective works are a tribute to one woman -- Julia Kiener Forchheimer (1900-1991) who opened the handweaving department in the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem in 1936.Illustrated with color photographs of the art with accompanying text. 7 Art In America Magazine May/June, 1970 Mormon Art & Architecture, Alexander Calder)
New York Art In America Inc. 1970 soft cover Good-plus
This is an especially good issue of this art magazine if you are interested in Mormon life, art, and architecture. Eighteen pages plus the cover are devoted to the subject with many photographs in both color and black and white. The coverage consists of three articles: A Panorama of Mormon Life, Mormon Art and Architecture, and Mormon Society -- A Photo Story. The other standout is a full color, heavyweight fold-out by Alexander Caldwell to accompany an article about him and his work, Spirals. The magazine measures 9"x12" and is very clean and tightly bound. Arthur's Illustrated Home Magazine (May, 1875)
8 Arthur's Illustrated Home Magazine (May, 1875)
Philadelphia Timothy Shay Arthur 1875 No. 5 Volume XLIII soft cover Very Good
Though not as well known as Godey's, Arthur's magazine was a hit in its day. This issue is from May,1875 and is clean and tightly bound. There is a small loss of paper at the bottom of the spine and a light stain from moisture to the bottom front corner and a light one also to bottom corner at a few pages in the back. Several pages of fashions are found at the front of the magazine, but Arthur's seemed to feel its readership was worthy of more intellectual material as well -- the first article is about South Wales. There's also articles about books and libraries, the island of Philae, burrowing bees, gardening, and the the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. Also includes stories and poems. Ads are confined to the back, but one full page one shows an ad for an early book club offered by the magazine's publisher. The magazine was launched in 1852 by Timothy Shay Arthur of Philadelphia who remained its editor and publisher until his death in 1885. After that it stayed around a few years before slipping away into the annals of time.

Atkins Saws In The Home & Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads (Vintage Advertising Brochures from E.C. Atkins & Company)
9 Atkins Saws In The Home & Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads (Vintage Advertising Brochures from E.C. Atkins & Company)
Indianapolis Atkins Saw Company No date
Though some would argue that Diston Saws, made in Philadelphia, were the finest handtools of the 19th and early 20th centuries, others would rank products made by the E.C. Atkins Co. of Indianapolis right up there with the best of them. This wonderful brochure entitled Atkins Saws in the Home gets the point across with both its cover graphic of a smiling man using a hand saw and this snappy copy: "Mr. Happy Man says a saw that 'chews' may cost less but the saw to choose is an Atkins. The Finest On Earth." Though the trifold brochure is undated, it appears to be from the 20's or 30's. It measures 4x9" folded, 12" by 9" when opened and 12x18" when extended to full size. The graphics of the full extended page are fabulous --wonderful images of the various saws produced by the company in black and white against a light grey background banded in the same blue as front cover.Copy includes Hints for the Home Workshop, Useful Facts & Figures, How To Care For A Good Saw, plus info on the company and its motto -- "For the man who does things." We will also include a smaller brochure advertising Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads booklet printed with the name Waco Tool Works of Chicago. This, too, is a trifold, but measures just 3-1/2" x6" closed. Both are in very good condition with just a small bit of soiling to outer fold of larger brochure and a speck of paper loss at a couple corners when fully extending (see photo). Goof gift for an antique tool collector.

10 Ayer's American Almanac for the Use of Farmers, Planters, Mechanics, Mariners and All Families 1862
Lowell, Massachusetts Dr. J.C. Ayer & Co. 1862 soft cover very good
I've had a bunch of Ayer's almanacs over the years, but this is the oldest one I'vw ever had, or even seen. Other than a little light soiling to yellow cover it's in excellent condition. The good doctor had this to say about it: "Calculated for the four great Meridians of the Country, and consequently msy be relied on as accurate for every Place in the United States and British Provinces of North America. Also, giving Medical Counsel which may be relied on for the Treatment and Cure of the afflicting Diseases that prevail within the latitudes of the American States. This one is so striking with its shiny surface and brown and gold background which sets off the small blue inset picture of the boats and the giant pink rose. 14 Boys Grown Tall; A Story of American Initiative (50 Cleveland Leaders, 1944)
Cleveland, Ohio The Plain Dealer 1944 Hard Cover Very good
This book is not seen as often as you would think. I had one ten years ago and just now got this one. It was rather inexpensively put together, but it's a genealogical gold mine with fifty biographies of Clevelanders of the day. It's comprised of a group of articles reprinted in book form. They were originally written for the Sunday Cleveland Plain Dealer and appeared throughout March, April and May, 1944. Surnames included are: Black Cary, Case, Champion, Chapin, Codrington, Coe, Collens, Cox, Crawford, Dunn, Eaton, Eide, Emerson, Frackleton, Gerhauser, Girdler, Gund, Harshaw, Holliday, Hood, Hoyt, Humphrey, Johnson, Joyce, Klumph, Kulas, Ladds, Leece, Lewman, Lincoln, Martin, Mather, McCrea, McIntyre, Ogelbay, Otis, Reedall, Rivitz, Rogers, Rossiter, Sears, Smith, Stilwell, Weatherhead, Weaver, White, Woodruff and Wysor. Book measures 7"x10" and has 119 pages bound with a plastic comb. There's a drawing for each subject and lots of anecdotes.

16 Cabinet Card Baby in Antique Chair Broadway Photo Co. Cleveland, Ohio
Cleveland, Ohio Broadway Photo Company turn of the 20th century Cabinet card Very good
Cute little person in a very big chair. May be a rocking chair. There are no names on the back and no dates, so I'm guessing this picture was taken around the turn of the 20th century. The Broadway Photo Co. was located at 1150 Broadway, Cleveland, Ohio, but research hit a dead end from the start. The card measures 4-1/4"x6-1/2" and is very nice and clean with no wear to edges

Canadian National Railways Menu September 6,1939
17 Canadian National Railways Menu September 6,1939
Canada Canadian National Railways 1939 card cover Very Good
Very handsome 1939 menu for passengers on the Canadian National Railway September 6, 1939. This was a banner year for Canada with the arrival of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth who in May of '39 took a Royal Tour of the country stopping at both small towns and large cities to the delight of fervent crowds. To celebrate the Royal Tour the two Canadian railways -- the Canadian National and the Canadian Pacific --each worked hard to outdo the other in providing half the cars for the Royal Train. Of course by the time this menu was printed the hoopla was all over, but the cover shows The National Monument at Ottawa which was unveiled for the King and Queen on May 18th, 1939. A very nice addition to the menu, Candiana, railroadiana, or travel collection. Measures 6-1/2"x9-1/2" and is printed on heavy card. The left side is in English and the right in French.

Chautauqua Summer Center For Music and Drama Season Program 1942 (Plus Related Ephemera)
19 Chautauqua Summer Center For Music and Drama Season Program 1942 (Plus Related Ephemera)
Chautauqua, New York Chautauqua Institution June, 1942 Vol. 7 No. 117 soft cover Very Good
Very nice clean program which shows the schedule for the entire summer of music and theatre at Chautauqua during the summer of 1942, as well as articles and photographs of the performers. Measures 8-1/2"x 11-1/4" and has 32 pages. There is a vertical crease down the center from having been folded, as so many programs were, but the crease is light. What's interesting about this particular one is the stuff I found inside. The previous owner was a young woman, Elizabeth Lorson, from Wooster, Ohio who was in New York City hoping to be taken on by a voice trainer of merit. Someone from back home wrote the following Western Union telegram (includes envelope) to her which was sent to the Parnassus Club in 1941. It reads, "Fear not about missing the boat. Most likely overcrowded. Anyway advise trying man Genevieve works with Sidney Dietch. His approach remotely like Griffith. Feel winter in New York with right teacher most valuable. You can always come home to me if conditions unhappy. Will write very soon. Lovingly, Eve." Dietch was one of the very finest in the city. Also, included is a postcard stating that the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra would be broadcasted on the radio August 10th, 1941. The message on the reverse is written by the young lady seeking a voice teacher. It reads "Just got mother's letter telling me May is probably coming. Will sure be glad to see who ever comes. Don't suppose you'd get this before Saturday. Will write soon. Love, Betty." She apparently was part of the music program at Chautauqua in 1941. The final item is a photo of an opera singer named Helen Jepson previously from Akron, Ohio, clipped from an unknown source. Wooster is close enough to Akron to have inspired Betty! (Elizbeth)

Cher Living Proof Farewell Tour 2003 (With Ticket Gund Arena Cleveland)
20 Cher Living Proof Farewell Tour 2003 (With Ticket Gund Arena Cleveland)
Unknown loation Isis Productions Inc. 2003 card cover Very good Condition
If you're a Cher fan and don't have one of these you might want to take a look -- it's a dazzler! There's almost no text, but the photographs are all in color, huge, and spectacular. The cherry on the cake is the entire ticket-- not just the stub. It's an adult ticket for Gund Arena, Cleveland, Ohio May 16, 2003 at 7:30 p.m.. and shows a price of $79.75. This is not a program -- it's a homage and an oversized one at 12" x 15-1/2". Pages are clean and tightly bound, but there is some edge wear at spots to both side of cover. Price has been lowered accord8ngly.
