24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
1 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
U.S.A. American Preservation Unknown date Unknown edition Disbound Articles Very Good Condition
I found these disbound articles in a box of Architectual Review Magazines which I bought at auction. I almost tossed them out until I realized how worthy they are. Each of the 24 focuses on a particular area within a state located anywhere in the country. They all derived from American Preservation magazine, so the color photographs are stunning. Each article is pretty long with many images. I wish I had more room to show them. Areas are these: New Orleans Lower Garden District; Providence, Rhode Island; Salem Massachusetts; Eutaw, Alabama's Greek Revival Architecture; Galveston, Texas; Mizner's Eden Palm Beach's Flamboyant Architecture; Brownsville, Texas; Waterford, Virginia; Helena, Montana; Columbus, Georgia; Madison, Indiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Oregon; Mt. Auburn in Cincinnati, Ohio; Manchester area of Pittsburgh; Savannah, Georgia; Powelton Village, Philadelphia; Saratoga Springs, New York; Crested Butte in the Rocky Mts.; Detroit's Woodward East; Oakland cemetery; Galena, Illinois and Bay View, A Summer Resort in Michigan. All are clean and stapled. Will still ship for $2 media in the U.S. as always.

51st Rose Bowl Game, Official Program, Michigan Vs. Oregon State (1965)
2 51st Rose Bowl Game, Official Program, Michigan Vs. Oregon State (1965)
Pasadena, California 1965 soft cover Very good
Great graphic on this vintage Rose Bowl parade program dated January 1, 1951. The University of Michigan Wolverines tussled with The Oregon Beavers that day and the Wolverines not only took the game handily with a score of 34 to 7, but Wolverine full-back Mel Anthony was named Rose Bowl player of the Game. The program is almost a magazine. It measures 8-1/2"x11" and has 98 pages, all tightly bound. there is one small tear to outer back edge, but I mended it with non-browning almost invisible archival tape. Fun gift for a Rose Bowl fan.

The booklet is clean, tightly bound, and measures 6"x9" with 31 pristine pages. The text is dense, but still accomodates black and white photographs throughout. It also covers three parts: The Pioneer Phase, The Era of Domestic Feminism; and The Period of Self-Determination.

7 Clara Ford Nurses Home Detroit, Michigan (1926)
Unknown location C.T. American Art 1926 Very good
Very bright clean postcard with just a tiny flat crease to upper left corner. Otherwise pristine. Card shows a white border, a divided back and a two cent stamp which matches the 1926 postmark because the postage rose from a penny to two cents from 1925 to 1928. The card was sent to Springfield, Ohio and the message reads thus, "Hope you and Marie had as good a time as Dot and I are having. Hazel." Card will arrive in new plastic sleeve.

9 Collector's Choice (Clements Library University of Michigan 1967)
Ann Arbor, Michigan Clements Library, Universityy of Michigan 1967 soft cover Fine condition
This is very much a bibliophile's booklet, so if you are a collector of books about books this one's for you! It's amazingly clean and nice and has 15 dense pages. The booklet is a guide to an exhibition of selected items from private collections formed by "certain members" of the Clement Library Associates. Collections hailed from Michigan, Ohio, Chicago, Connecticut, Seattle, and New York. Only one collector was a woman. Their topics covered Mackinac Island, American Indians, the Great Lakes, the far Northwest, medicine, the American Revolution, the Civil War, Winston Churchill, Lake Superior, sheet music, books about books, Florida and etiquette.

Compliments of Mackinac County (Michigan, 1930)
10 Compliments of Mackinac County (Michigan, 1930)
Michigan Mackinac County 1930 soft cover Very good condition
This was very likely a freebie back in its day, targeted to vacationers ready to explore Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The booklet is filled with interesting ads which I enjoyed more than I usually do. The best one is on the back cover, The Grand Mackinac Hotel, where guests could clip-clop off the veranda for a horseback ride. Thomas' Restaurant put the date, 1930, on his ad which is how I was able to date this. Other ads include hotels, cottages, restaurants, shops, transportation and garages for car problems. The booklet is clean, nice and tightly bound. Only fault is a vertical crease, which is pretty common. Booklet has 32 pages.

Cream of Wheat Salesman's Order Book (circa 1901-1925)
11 Cream of Wheat Salesman's Order Book (circa 1901-1925)
Minneapolis, Minnesota Cream of Wheat Corp. 1901-1925 Hard cover Near fine conditon
This is a very clean and attractive salesman's order book which includes the business card of the salesman himself located in a plastic pocket inside the back cover. His name was Edward Eberhard. The Cream of Wheat slogan -- High in Energy, Easily Digested -- appears at the top of the unused pad of paper. Inside the front cover is printed information for the sales force to mention to would-be customers. But the best part is the cereal's logo which features a real chef thought to be Frank White. Frank lived in Michigan and died with no stone on his grave. Long after the fact people in the area made sure he got one -- with this Cream of wheat image engraved on it. The order ook mesures 3-1/2" x 5-3/4" and is very nice.

Greetings From Chicago, Chicago Art Institute Black and White Postcard
12 Greetings From Chicago, Chicago Art Institute Black and White Postcard
Chicago, Illinois International Postal Card Company Fine
A beauty in black and white sent to our girl (I have MANY of her cards) Sophie Nundahl of Perry, North Dakota from Emil who says, "Thank you for the postal you sent me. With best wishes." Maybe Emil was in Chicago to visit the Art Institute which is pictured on the card and says this of itself, "Situated on Michigan Avenue at the head of Adams St. Contains many famous paintings and works of art." The card was not mailed and shows no date, but all the cards I have belonging to Sophie are from 1906 to 1914.

Gun and Cartridge Record (April, 1954)
13 Gun and Cartridge Record (April, 1954)
Chagrin Falls, Ohio Gun and Cartridge Inc. 1954 Vol. III Number 1 soft cover Very good
This one's a cross between a newspaper and a magazine. Retains the newspaper look, but the paper itself is much more substantial which is why it looks so nice. This is NOT the publication of the same name issued by Andy Palmer of Michigan. This one is harder to find and came from Ohio, though Palmer's is getting to be scarce too. The magazine measures 12"x18" and has 12 pages of dense text. It's clean, crisp and bright with just a few little tears which I have repaired with almost invisible archival tape. The articles are all short and cover a wide range of subjects, including an NRA meeting in Washington, Achtung Panzers, the Bacon shooting bench, Lt. Col. Fritz Clodius Skaar, Swiss uniforms 1898-1915 and much more. I have about a half dozen of these all from the 50's, so if you want a run-down on what's available use the contact button and I'll get back to you.

Gun and Cartridge Record October, 1953
14 Gun and Cartridge Record October, 1953
Chagrin Falls, Ohio Gun and Cartridge Record Inc. 1953 Vol. II No. 7 soft cover Very good
This one's a cross between a newspaper and a magazine. It's clean, crisp and bright with just some light toning to edges at spots and darkening at crease. The articles are all short and cover a wide range of subjects, including Micahel Corcoran, a colorful officer in the Civil War, the history of the cartridge, handloading, panzers, an Italian anti-personnel land mine and much more. There are also book reviews, classifieds, and current prices of various arms. I have about a half dozen of these all from the 50's, so if you want a run-down on what's available use the contact button and I'll get back to you.

Indiana Limestone Sculpture Groups on the Michigan Avenue Bridge, Chicago Illinois 1928 (DuSable Bridge)
15 Indiana Limestone Sculpture Groups on the Michigan Avenue Bridge, Chicago Illinois 1928 (DuSable Bridge)
Chicago Indiana Limestone Company circa 1928 Good-plus soft cover Good-plus
This is a scarce item printed by the Indiana Limestone Company after the 1928 completion of the magnificent Michigan Avenue bridge in Chicago which is now known as the DuSable Bridge. The sculptures for which it is best known were commissioned by William Wrigley and there are four of them. James Earl Fraser was the sculptor for The Discovers which depicts La Salle and Marquette and also The Pioneers which show the early pioneers who settled the area that became Chicago. Henry Hering also provided two sculptures, Defense which features Captain Heald and the massacre of the Fort Dearborn garrison and Regeneration which depicts the regeneration of Chicago after the great fire of 1871. This items is designed accordion style. Closed it measures 8" x 11-1/4", but opens to 31" with printing on both sides. It's very clean and nice with just a light damp stain to bottom front edge only (does not appear at back) and a little toning to edges. Overall quite nice.

Long Island Modern: The First Generation of Modernist Architecture on Long Island 1925-1960 (1987)
16 Long Island Modern: The First Generation of Modernist Architecture on Long Island 1925-1960 (1987)
East Hampton, New York Guild Hall Museum 1987 Card cover Fine condition
I bought this in Michigan, so it's not surprising that a gift inscription on the bottom of the title page reads, " To---- and ----, So nice to have you in Ann Arbor." Other than that there's no defect. Crisp and clean as a whistle. The booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 36 pristine pages. Many black and white photographs show off mansions, family homes, vacation homes -- even an aluminum beach house. The text is lengthy and seriously addressed which deems it a collectible.

Merry Christmas Girl on Snowshoes Squirrel, Holly Postcard 1914
17 Merry Christmas Girl on Snowshoes Squirrel, Holly Postcard 1914
1914 Fine
This one's a charmer! Cute little girl on snowshoes holding a squirrel in the palm of her hand and superimposed on a giant holly leaf. It says Merry Christmas, but very small at the lower right hand corner. The card is in fine condition and is postmarked Detroit, Michigan 1914 and addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Braderick (?), Menden (?)City, Michigan. It's embossed, but does not say it's from Germany. Northwestern Versus Notre Dame 1948 Football Program
18 Northwestern Versus Notre Dame 1948 Football Program
Notre Dame University 1948 soft cover Very good
Beautiful condition and a fun collectible no matter which side's your favorite (well, maybe!) The game was held at Notre Dame Stadium November 13, 1948. The program measures 8"x11-1/2" and has 84 pages. It's interesting that the leading advertiser is Chesterfield cigarettes. Not only do they command the back cover, but also paid for a two-page color spread inside. Studebaker and Coca-Cola likewise sprang for color advertising. Pictures of the campus, staff, and Notre Dame players abound, as do photos of the Northwestern team. I did a little research and it seems that the Fighting Irish ended victorious with a perfect season matched only by the University of Michigan Wolverines. The championship ultimately went to the Wolverines, but at least on this day the Notre Dame Fight Song filled the autumn air with joy!

Photograph Album Camp Whipporwill Grayling,Michigan 1927
19 Photograph Album Camp Whipporwill Grayling,Michigan 1927
Grayling, Michigan Home-made 1927 Card cover Very Good
Though slim, this lovely clean album captures in eleven photographs a July vacation in Grayling, Michigan, known for its summer get-aways. The pictures are all of the same group, both men and women. Some views are scenic -- a lake, a bridge, a winding road, and a nice log cabin, but there are also people enjoying archery practice, women on the lake in a canoe, posed shots on the bridge, an old car stuffed with people, a shed showing three old cars lined up inside and a car with an open trailer filled with stuff outside in front of the cabin where a man observes. The album measures 6"x8-1/2" and the photos are roughly 3-1/2"x6". The only fault is mottling to the back cover with dark and lighter areas
