Chinese Comic Journey To the West (20 booklets in Box, 1996)
2 Chinese Comic Journey To the West (20 booklets in Box, 1996)
Shanghai Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House 1996 7532216462 / 9787532216468 Presumed First Soft covers Fine books and VG Box
I bought this last night at a book and paper sale -- what a surprise! I have been going to this place for 20 years and never have I seen any any Asian items I can recall. The box is covered with blue cloth and is clean and sturdy. Inside are two stacks of small comic books, ten on each side. The text is in Chinese, but the black and white drawings tell a story too. The little books measure 3-1/2" x 5". I was able to translate much, but the same exact specific item was used in every translation site which was a problem because two books are missing from that one. Mine has ALL TWENTY. The translated ones are:Dragon Palace I; Dragon Palace II; Two Mountains; Gao Laozhuang; Quicksand; White Tiger; True Hawk; Red Baby; Tongtian River; Golden Pocket; True Monkey Ling; Flaming Mountain; Fake West; Pirates of the Caribbean; Lion Camel; No Bottom Hole; Battle of Qinglongshen; and Retrieve the Scriptures. As stated the little booklets are clean and attractive, as is the box which has only a grey spot to the title box on the outside. A very nice collectible.

Haddam, Connecticut Connecticut Valley Arms Inc. 1977/78 Fine condition
Wow! This is a really nice find. Inside this envelope are many pristine, unused advertising products. The envelope was never mailed which is likely why everything inside is so perfect. The contents include the following: a letter to the dealer; a 1978 catalog replete with price sheet; a huge wall or window banner measuring 12" x 52"; and a counter card (10-1/2" x 14") affixed with a pad of tear-off coupons. None were used AND we have a second unused pad as well.

Crisp and clean as new with the keepsake medallion in it's original bag stapled to front corner. NMLRA is still conducting target shooting competitions using single bullet muzzleloaders. The competition is about sport of course, but it's also an endeavor for competitors to arrive in historical garb. The program measures 5-1/2" x 8-3/4"and has 16 pages. The only defect is the fate of many programs of all kinds -- a vertical fold right now the center. It's unusual to find the token.

The Musical News: A Monthly Journal Devoted to Bands, Orchestras and Music In General (May 1892)
10 The Musical News: A Monthly Journal Devoted to Bands, Orchestras and Music In General (May 1892)
Reading, Pennsylvania No Authors or Editor Named 1892 Vol.II, No. 6 soft cover Good condition
This was a small independent publication, issues of which are very hard to find. I've had it a long time, but it just surfaced today in one of my storage closets. There are short articles about arranging a programme; the death of Francesco Lamperti, the Italian singer; ease in violin playing; and others. But I do think the ads are what steal the show! Magazine is clean and tightly bound, but does show some toning to the back cover (see photo) and a flat vertical crease, likely from having been in a mailbox. I have ironed it flat and put it in the bookpress. Magazine measures 7" x 10" and has 18 pages. The only ad that isn't musical is the one at the bottom of the front cover for the Neversink Mountain Hotel in Reading, Pennsylvania, "a magnificent new resort just compete.'

The Vermonter: A Well-Spring of New Thought, Experience and Illustration (July-August, 1906)
11 The Vermonter: A Well-Spring of New Thought, Experience and Illustration (July-August, 1906)
White River Junction, Vermont Charles R. Cummings 1906 Volume XI, No.12-13 Soft copver Good-plus
Other than a small repair to the upper spine at front cover the magazine is very nicely kept. The repair feels as though it was done with archival tape which doesn't turn brown and is very subtle. The magazine tends to focus on a theme -- in this case it's about luring travelers to the state with hotels. The rest is about various areas of interest -- Manchester in the mountains, Lull's Brook, a mountain directory, Elmore Mountain, the charm of Memphremagog, and the story of Grass Mount, a stately home in Burlington. There's also atrue story of Vermont titled Moonlight and A Bear. the magazine has many photos and is clean and tightly bound. It measures 6-1/4" and 9-3/4". Nice ads at back.

A Century of Progress Exposition Official View Book (1933), Albert, Allen D.
12 Albert, Allen D. A Century of Progress Exposition Official View Book (1933)
Chicago The Reuben H. Donnelley Corporation 1933 Card cover Fine condition
I almost always have one of these, but never have I had one as nice as this. It was wrapped in white paper and plastic before storage by former owner. Photographs are nice, but I love the art of this one -- beautiful colors and so much detail you can look at it again and again and see something new. You can visit the Esplanade of Flags, a Chinese Lama Temple, the Japanese Pavilion, the Hall of Science, the Hall of Religions, the Hall of General Exhibits, the Sky Ride and other amusements, the Oriental Village, The Midway, Old Fort Dearborn, the Museum of the Automobile, the General Motors Exhibition Building, the Enchanted Island, Magic Mountain, the Horticultural Building and much more -- really more. The pages are not numbered, but I counted 21. The booklet measures 9" x 12".

Switzerland: Why The Ideal Playground? (Travel Brochure 1934), An Englishman
13 An Englishman Switzerland: Why The Ideal Playground? (Travel Brochure 1934)
Berne, Switzerland Publicity Office of the Swiss Federal Railways 1934 soft cover Very Good
Is this not the most delightful cover? Not sure why the flower fairies grace it unless perhaps it's because the endorsement at the front of the booklet was written by an Englishman and it was the English artist, Cicely Mary Barker, who imagined such sprites in the 1920's. But whatever the reason the cover art is wholly different than the inside of the booklet which is all about gorgeous green tinted full page photographs of mountain scenery, festivals, and people. Especially beautiful and not often seen. Clean and tightly bound with just one small stain to back cover. Measures 6"x9" and has 64 pages.

Wild Flower Name Tales (1976), Anderson, Berta
14 Anderson, Berta Wild Flower Name Tales (1976)
Colorado Springs Century One Press 1976 soft copver Near fine anderson Bill (photographer)
Very pretty and very interesting if you're a gardener, or a natural history buff. The booklet is clean and bright and appears unread. The only fault is a small blacked out price on the back and a tiny black spot on the spine. Pages are pristine with no names or writing and very handsome photos including one in color at frontis. This is isn't a field guide -- it's narrative which tells the stories of how the wildflowers of the Rocky Mountain West got their names and their namers. Booklet measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" with 124 pages. Map inside back cover.

Museum of Appalachia's Annual Tennessee Fall Homecoming 1986, Irwin, John Rice
17 Irwin, John Rice Museum of Appalachia's Annual Tennessee Fall Homecoming 1986
West Chester, Pennsylvania Schiffer Publishing 1986 7th Annual Card cover Very good condition
This is a very handsome booklet published to commemorate the museum's 7th annual Tennessee Fall Homecoming in Norris, Tennessee. It's VERY nice with quality coated paper, lots of black and white photographs, and a full color glossy cover. It's also over-sized at 8-1/2" x 11" and has 88 pristine pages. The only fault is a small abrasion on two pages which were stuck together at one time. I almost didn't even see it. On on of the those pages (see photo) where there is a names written on the outer margin. I thought it would be a signature from one of the three guys in the picture -- Alex Haley, Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander, and John Rice Irwin, the author. Not only was I wrong, but I can't even decipher it. Anyway, there's a lot to read and a lot look at here. It's all about music, old time mountain and rural activities, Appalachian arts and crafts, writing, art, and food.

Atlanta, Georgia Capricorn Corporation 1985 091071911x / 9780910719117 First Edition Stated Card cover Very good condition Robeet Peters Photography
I like the stark grey, black, and white colors on the beige cover and pages. There's something about that that makes it seem important. In one other way it also shows a sense of importance. In the the beauty of the home and its planation there is a segment which shows photos of the slave cabins. The booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 48 pages.

Chapmanville, West Virginia Woodland Press 2009 0979323681 / 9780979323683 Reprint Card cover Fine condition
Crisp and clean as new -- very unlikely that it's ever been read. Booklet was originally published in Logan County, West Virginia in 1927 where the event took place. The area was coal country so when 5000 coal miners crossed Lens Creek Mountain wearing their anger and red bandanas around their necks (hence red necks) the sheriff rounded up a rag-tag army of deputies, salesmen, and store clerks. But it wasn't enough. the march turned into into a bloody revolt which required involvement from President Harding, which included an air squadron frod Langley Field. Booklet measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and has 70 pages. Many photos at back of booklet.
