1940's Wedding Pictures; Hand Colored and Duotone
1 1940's Wedding Pictures; Hand Colored and Duotone
Cleveland, Ohio Atlas Studio Very Good
These are very interesting - not just because everyone looks so nice and they're sooooooo 40's, but because of the photography. What we have here is a framed duotone under glass and a loose hand-colored photo of the same wedding with the addition of the groom and groomsmen. Both photos were take by Atlas Studio of Cleveland, but, sadly, we don't know who these people are. The duotone is sealed in a leatherette frame which has a stand on the back for display. The inside image is 8"x10" and the frame is 11-1/2"x13". The color one is also 8x10", so it's easy to frame.

1978 Calendar Dance Magazine Quotes the Greats (School of Cleveland Ballet)
2 1978 Calendar Dance Magazine Quotes the Greats (School of Cleveland Ballet)
New York City Dance Magazine 1977 soft cover Fine Condition
This was an annual calendar designed and published by Dance Magazine for distribution to entities such as the School of Cleveland Ballet which could have their name printed on the final page for their own advertising. I have seen these before, but always missing at least one page. This one has all 12 and all are pristine. Each month shows a photo of a famous dancer along with a quote from each. The 1978 calendar aimed the spotlight on Alexandra Danilova, Natalia Makorova, Peter Martins, Edward Vilella, Vaslav Nijinsky, Louis Peres, Cynthia Gregory, Margot Fonteyn, Erik Bruhn, Martha Graham, Mikail Baryshnikov, and Anna Pavlova. Measures 4" x 8-3.4"

30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
3 30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
New Orlean, LA G.F. Castleden 1924-1929 Fine in Very Good Envelopes
These are a lovely find if you are enchanted by the architecture of New Orleans. I've never seen this many in one place ever, but I got them from the estate of a Castleden collector. Castleden was a British artist who emigrated to New Orleans and continued his career as an artist there. The cards were aimed at the tourist trade -- ten scenes for a quarter. Three of the original envelopes will accompany them, but the cards weren't in them, so I am uncertain which belong where. The scenes are Old World beautiful and include, but are not confined to, these subjects: Pirate Alley, the monastery of the Capuchian monks, the staircase of the old St. Louis Hotel, the courtyard of the old Spanish Arsenal, oyster schooners, the Spanish Gate of Cabildo, the Courtyard of the Little Theatre, and the Little Green Shutter Tea Room. None have been used and all are in excellent condition. The envelopes are a little worn, but not bad. The photo shows an array of cards, but not all -- there really are thirty!

Alice (1992 Opera)
6 Alice (1992 Opera)
Hamburg, Germany Thalia Theatre 1992 soft cover Good-plus
An uncommon item, published in tandem with the opening of the dark opera, Alice, which is based on Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The lyrics probe not the story as much as how it pertains to its author. Was not intended for children. Inside front cover (see photo two) is a small drawing signed by its artist. I can't decipher the first namel, but I do believe the last name is Zinn. I immediately thought of David Zinn who does have a history with the Thalia Theatre, but I can't say for sure that this is right. Research shows no account of him having anything to do with the set design for this show. Program is written in both German and English, primarily German, and is illustrated with both black and white photos and drawings plus color plates. Measures 8"x10-1/2" and has 64 pages plus a laid-in insert with info on the songs. Clean and tightly bound with no names or writing, but does show scratches to back cover and a small bit of edge wear, also at back.

All About Hawaii; Thrum's Hawaiian Annual 1950
7 All About Hawaii; Thrum's Hawaiian Annual 1950
Honolulu Hawaii Honolulu Star Bulletin 1950 Diamond Jubilee Edition soft cover
This is a book, yes, but it's an ephemeral one because it's sort of like the phone book -- you can get a new one every year! This one's nice because it commemorates Hawaii's Diamond Jubilee and precedes its statehood. The front sections has a lot of Hawaiian history and there is much info later on the various island and the sugar and pineapple industries. There is also some tourist info and ads for hotels and restaurants, but this is really about what Hawaii was like at mid-century. Photo illustrated in black and white. the book measures 5"x7" and has 352 pages. The only fault is wear to the very bottom of the spine with a small loss of paper at both edges. Otherwise it's tightly bound and clean as whistle inside and out. 352 pages.

American Photography, November 1932
8 American Photography, November 1932
Boston, MA American Photographic Publishing Co. 1933 Vol. XXVII, No. 11 soft cover Very good
This is a wonderful look at photographic history. It's not a magazine for the casual Kodak owner, but a serious look at photographic technology as it was in 1933. Articles cover exposure and development; photographic Christmas cards with hand-drawn borders; development with paraphenylenediamine; aerial photography with a rebuilt reflecting camera; the photographic translation of color into monochrome; telephoto pictures and infra red plates and much more. Lots to read. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Many ads too for photographic equipment. Magazine is clean and tightly bound. Measures 7" x 9-3/4". Only fault is light toning to back cover. See last photo.

Art In America Magazine May/June, 1970 Mormon Art & Architecture, Alexander Calder)
9 Art In America Magazine May/June, 1970 Mormon Art & Architecture, Alexander Calder)
New York Art In America Inc. 1970 soft cover Good-plus
This is an especially good issue of this art magazine if you are interested in Mormon life, art, and architecture. Eighteen pages plus the cover are devoted to the subject with many photographs in both color and black and white. The coverage consists of three articles: A Panorama of Mormon Life, Mormon Art and Architecture, and Mormon Society -- A Photo Story. The other standout is a full color, heavyweight fold-out by Alexander Caldwell to accompany an article about him and his work, Spirals. The magazine measures 9"x12" and is very clean and tightly bound. Faults are exterior and small -- light wear to all corners with a tiny snip of top front one and a small bit of wear to bottom of spine. Overall very nice. Atkins Saws In The Home & Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads (Vintage Advertising Brochures from E.C. Atkins & Company)
10 Atkins Saws In The Home & Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads (Vintage Advertising Brochures from E.C. Atkins & Company)
Indianapolis Atkins Saw Company No date
Though some would argue that Diston Saws, made in Philadelphia, were the finest handtools of the 19th and early 20th centuries, others would rank products made by the E.C. Atkins Co. of Indianapolis right up there with the best of them. This wonderful brochure entitled Atkins Saws in the Home gets the point across with both its cover graphic of a smiling man using a hand saw and this snappy copy: "Mr. Happy Man says a saw that 'chews' may cost less but the saw to choose is an Atkins. The Finest On Earth." Though the trifold brochure is undated, it appears to be from the 20's or 30's. It measures 4x9" folded, 12" by 9" when opened and 12x18" when extended to full size. The graphics of the full extended page are fabulous --wonderful images of the various saws produced by the company in black and white against a light grey background banded in the same blue as front cover.Copy includes Hints for the Home Workshop, Useful Facts & Figures, How To Care For A Good Saw, plus info on the company and its motto -- "For the man who does things." We will also include a smaller brochure advertising Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads booklet printed with the name Waco Tool Works of Chicago. This, too, is a trifold, but measures just 3-1/2" x6" closed. Both are in very good condition with just a small bit of soiling to outer fold of larger brochure and a speck of paper loss at a couple corners when fully extending (see photo). Goof gift for an antique tool collector.

Atwater Radio Catalog 1927 / Atwater Kent Radio Log (1929)
11 Atwater Radio Catalog 1927 / Atwater Kent Radio Log (1929)
Philadelphia Atwater Kent Manufacturing Company 1927 Soft cover Good
These two Atwater Kent items came together so, as always, I kept them that way. The catalog isn't perfect, but is tightly bound and clean. Defects include vertical crease on all pages and cover, but I have ironed it flat and put it in the book press. There's a also a tiny corner missing to lower front cover, a part of mailing label on front has been removed, there's a few faint pencil marks on back, and evidence that something was once pasted on top edge of a two page spread (see photo). The radio card log is interesting -- it's completely filled in on both sides and dated 12-25-29.

Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo Program (1950)
12 Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo Program (1950)
Monte Carlo Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo 1950 Card cover Good condition
Were it not for some light foxing to top edge of front cover and a few spots to plain back cover this would be a beauty. It's beautiful inside with many photographs. The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo opened in 1937 and closed in 1968. Inside the program is a leaflet with a program for Paquita, the Nutcracker, and Prince Igor. Principle dancers include Alexandra Danilova, Frederic Franklin, Leon Danielian, Nathalie Oleg Tupine, Roman Jasensky, Nina Novak, Gertrude Tyven, Krassovska Yvonne Chouteau and Robert Lindgren. There are also other dancers pictured. Program measures 9" x 12" and though unpaginated, is quite ample. There is also a center section printed on rose colored paper explaining the Repertoire. there's also a lovely laid-in photo of Nathalie Krassovska.

Be An Artist At the Gas Range; Successful Recipes by the Mystery Chef (1936)
13 Be An Artist At the Gas Range; Successful Recipes by the Mystery Chef (1936)
Longman, Green & Co. 1936 soft cover Very Good
If ever a cover screamed 1930'as this one has to be it -- what a strong graphic, both front and back! The booklet was offered in bookstores by Longman, Green who published books by the Mystery Chef -- who, incidentally, lived quite well given the photo at the back of the booklet of his New York living room! But that's a disgression -- the booklet also proved to be, as this one was, an advertising vehicle for the local gas company. It measures 5"x8" and has 96 pristine pages of recipes which are viable in today's kitchen.

Harrah, Arthur Hunnicut as Bull Harris and the star, John Wayne, who played Cole Thornton. The photo is without defect and measures 8"x10". The three actors names are printed on the back by previous owner and there is a small sign of a previous price sticker. Otherwise very good.

Blanche Lizzell and the Color Woodcut (Art Exhibition Catalog 2002)
15 Blanche Lizzell and the Color Woodcut (Art Exhibition Catalog 2002)
Boston, Mass. MFA Publications 2002 soft cover Good-plus
Wow -- what a beautiful catalog this is! The color woodcuts are just charming and the catalog is very clean and mostly very, very nice. But it looks as though someone set a wet glass on it inside the cover. (See second photo) Consequently there are some light pink spots to reverse side of cover and a slight bit of crinkliness to the area where the glass was, though I have pressed it much flatter in the book press and it covers just a few pages at front. The rest is pristine and no images are involved. The good news about this is the price! I reduced it considerably. Blanche Lazell (1878-1956) was a printmaker, painter and designer, but she is best known for her white line woodcut technique based on the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print. Catalog measures 8-1/2x9-1/2" and has 96 pages which include two essays. Exhibit was shown in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Cleveland Museum of Art and Elvehjem Museum in Madison, Wisconsin.

British Empire Exhibition 1924 Official Guide
16 British Empire Exhibition 1924 Official Guide
Fleetway Press 1924 soft cover Very Good
This is a fun find because I've never had one before and it's a guide to a huge exhibition which celebrated Britain and the 58 - count 'em - countries that made up the Empire in 1924. All of the countries participated with the exception of Gambia and Gilbraltar, so when King George V opened the exhibition on April 23, 1924 (St. George's Day), it was a moment to remember. The second photo shows a world map that came from the pocket at the inside front cover. The guide measures 5-1/2"x8-1/2" and has 128 pages illustrated with photographs. Great ads throughout, plus those contained in the advertising section in photo three. The exhibit and the guide would remind you of a World's Fair.

Burdock Blood Bitters Trade Card (Man with Child in Head)
17 Burdock Blood Bitters Trade Card (Man with Child in Head)
Unknown Burdock Blood Bitters Unknown Very good
This has to be the oddest trade card ever produced. I've had it for many years and, as you can see, it is part of the montage photo at the top of my website. I have finally decided to let it go even though I have still never figured out why the guy's head's ripped open to expose a rather creepy child inside. The turns of the "paper" look so real it's amazing. The card was issued to sell "the greatest of all blood purifiers." It's larger than average and measures 4-1/2"x6" and has numerous testimonials at back showing how effective it was for curing dyspepsia, biliousness, sick headache and constipation. The card was given to customers by H.T. Hess Druggist, Jackson Centre, Pennsylvania. Card shows a small bit of edge wear and toning to bottom corners on reverse side.

C& C Originals Square Dance Dress 114 Size 6-8-10 (Uncut)
18 C& C Originals Square Dance Dress 114 Size 6-8-10 (Uncut)
Harrison, Arkansas C & C Unknown Very good
I don't buy too many patterns, but every once in awhile ... This one is for a square dance dress with a fancy bodice that flows down to the eight gore skirt. The instructions and pattern pieces are crisp and unused. They also retain their factory folds. The sizes and measurements are: Size Six 30'1/2, 23, 32-1/2"; Sixe Eight 31-1/2". 24, 33-1/2"; and Size 10 32-1/2",25,34-1/2". Original plastic bag was torn, so I have replaced it with a new heavy gauge one. Only visible fault is a notation about a dance coming up written by former owner at top of cover -- visible in photo one. ORDERS OUTSIDE U.S. WELCOME. Please contact me with destination before ordering so I can quote actual shipping cost.

Cabinet Card Baby in Antique Chair Broadway Photo Co. Cleveland, Ohio
19 Cabinet Card Baby in Antique Chair Broadway Photo Co. Cleveland, Ohio
Cleveland, Ohio Broadway Photo Company turn of the 20th century Cabinet card Very good
Cute little person in a very big chair. May be a rocking chair. There are no names on the back and no dates, so I'm guessing this picture was taken around the turn of the 20th century. The Broadway Photo Co. was located at 1150 Broadway, Cleveland, Ohio, but research hit a dead end from the start. The card measures 4-1/4"x6-1/2" and is very nice and clean with no wear to edges

Cabinet Card Little Girl with Flower Basket Sitting on Doorstep (Joshua Smith Studio, Chicago 1876-1886)
20 Cabinet Card Little Girl with Flower Basket Sitting on Doorstep (Joshua Smith Studio, Chicago 1876-1886)
Chicago Joshua Smith Studio Unknown Very good
Joshua Smith was no ordinary run-of-the-mill photographer who at this point in his career specialized in photographing children such as this cute little doorstep girl. In 1878 he won a coveted Silver Medal at the Paris Exhibition and in 1883 was elected president of the American Photographers Association. He also wrote many articles on chemicals and photography. There is no date on this photo, but research shows that the address on the back of it --206 North Clark Street, Chicago --was occupied by him from 1876-1886. The cabinet card is in sepia.
