Application for Appointment As Flying Cadet (WWII Documents 1942)
1 Application for Appointment As Flying Cadet (WWII Documents 1942)
U.S. Government 1942 Stapled papers Very good condition
The Flying Cadets are not heard of much today, but in WWII they provided a considerable amount of personnel. Some were even on the ground working as flight engineers, armament officers, meteorologists, and photography officers. After the war, however, the ground jobs were no longer needed. The Flying Cadets, however, came back in good numbers to serve in the Korean War as pilots, navigators and bombardiers. This five page document was submitted by a Clevelander along with three positive referrals from two Cleveland companies -- two different ones from Cleveland Diesel Engine Division of General Motors and one from General Carloading Company Inc.. The four small documents are receipts for paying his premium for VA service life insurance. Three of these are dated 1945 and one is dated 1946. All are clean and nice.

B&O Railroad Miniature Metal Sign and Three B&O Color Postcards
2 B&O Railroad Miniature Metal Sign and Three B&O Color Postcards
Earlton, New York; Washington Audio-Visual Designs & Washington Chapter NRHS 1967 All In fine Condition
This is a unique offering -- a small 3" diameter metal sign for the B&O Railroad, offered in the 1950's as a premium for Post cereals. The collector who owned it paired it with three color postcards, one of which is dated 1967. None have been used or written on and all are in excellent condition. The dated one was published by Washington Chapter NRHS and shows a President Class 4-6-2 pulling the B&O's Ambassador past Ivy City as it leaves Union Station Washington, D.C. Dec. 16, 1951. The other cards show "The Cincinnatian" train No 53 westbound from Toledo, Ohio July, 1956 and the B&O Mikado standing at rest during the final steam passenger run May, 1958 from Cleveland to Halloway, Ohio. We have several more pairings of metal signs and cards.

Aside from a small crease to upper back corner it's in excellent condition with no fault of note. All you had to do was buy cigarettes, hang on to the coupons, and trade them in for something in the catalog -- and what an array of items! Fabulous Finocchio's Night Club San Francisco (Circa 1950's Two Brochures)
4 Fabulous Finocchio's Night Club San Francisco (Circa 1950's Two Brochures)
San Francisco Finocchio's Night Club No date. Circa 1950's - early 60's card covers Very good
Here we have two brochures from Finocchio's, a popular club which was located in San Francisco. It began as a speakeasy during Prohibition, then morphed into a club with lavish shows featuring female impersonators once it was legal to serve alcohol again. The green and white brochure measures 6" x 7-1/4" and opens to three times that size showing individual performer pictures. It was designed to be mailed as a souvenir, but it was not. The smaller brochure measures 4" x 7-1/2" and opens to twice that. This one shows drink prices on the reverse side. Scotch was $1.15 and bourbon, gin, vodka, rum and cordials were $1.10, though premium brands required an additional $1.15. Both are clean and attractive. The club closed in the late 90's after the death of the owner.

Lion Brand Milk Premium Catalog The Magic Door
5 Lion Brand Milk Premium Catalog The Magic Door
Brooklyn, New York Nestle's Milk Products soft cover Good
Scarce premium booklet for Lion Brand Condensed and Evaporated Milks. There is curiously no date on this, but it appears to be from the 1920's. Research shows that the premium program was in effect as early as 1915 and was suspended in May of 1943 and all premium stores were closed due to war shortages. The book measures 4" across by 10" tall and has 26 pages of gifts to choose from including toys, household goods, jewelry, sports equipment etc. But the most interesting part is of interest to those who collect Girl Scout and Boys Scout ephemera. The book shows a page each for this with multiple pictured items. Book is clean and tightly bound, but the plain back cover shows a small stain at the bottom edge and a bit of flat wrinkling.

This a rather unique pairing -- a miniature metal sign for New York Central System Railway that was a premium for Post cereal back in the 1950's and a color post card and two black and white cards, all showing images of New York Central trains. The color one shows the famous New York Central 5396, a steam locomotive. The black and white cards show New York Central #5271 along the Hudson River and the New York Central Lines #4725. All cards are unused and in excellent condition. The sign is also very good.

Nickel Plate Railroad Miniature Metal Sign and Two Nickel Plate Postcards
7 Nickel Plate Railroad Miniature Metal Sign and Two Nickel Plate Postcards
Earlton, New York Audio Visual Designs Very good
This is a rather unique offering -- a 3" square miniature Nickel Plate Road Railroad that had been a premium for Post Cereals back in the 1950's. The previous owner, a collector, paired the sign with two unused Nickel Plate Road color postcards. The first shows the Nickel Plate 763 fresh out of Conneaut, Ohio and waiting for a repair in September 1958. The second card shows the Nickel Plate 758 and 754, a westbound freight from Fostoria, Ohio September, 1958. Everything is in very good condition.

Poll Parrot's Howdy Doody Photo Album (1950's)
8 Poll Parrot's Howdy Doody Photo Album (1950's)
St. Louis, Missouri Roberts, Johnson & Rand Division of International Shoe Company circa 1950's soft cover Good-plus
What a fun find! Poll-Parrot Shoes and the gang from the Howdy Doody Show teamed up to bring Baby Boomers a very cool premium. It's bright and colorful and contains four real photos pasted in -- the star himself, Clarabell the Clown, Mr. Bluster and Flub-a-Dub. The photo shown is printed on the page. There's also music and lyrics to the show's famous theme song (can you hear it in your head?), plus the Poll Parrot Song. The back page spread shows a cartoon ad for shoes and an array of wacky things seen on the show like the Talkascope and the Flap-Doodle. The album measures 8-3/4"x11" and has 10 pages if you count the reverse sides of the covers. If this were in fine condition it would sell in three figures, but it does show some browning and an abrasion on the outer side edge of both the front and back cover and a few little spots at margins. But it's tightly bound and still very collectible.

Southern Pacific Lines Metal Sign and Southern Pacific 4294 Postcard
9 Southern Pacific Lines Metal Sign and Southern Pacific 4294 Postcard

This is an unusual offering, a 3" in diameter metal sign for the Southern Pacific Lines which was a premium for Post cereals back in the 1950's paired with a color postcard showing Southern Pacific 4294. I bought them from a collector who had already paired them and decided to leave them that way. The Southern Pacific 4294 was the last steam locomotive purchased by the company. Card is unused and in clean crisp condition. the signs shows a few nicks, but over all is quite good.

Victory Club Album Official Government Photographs (WWII)
12 Victory Club Album Official Government Photographs (WWII)
Unknown Location Hi-Speed Gas Stations circa 1942-43 hard cover Very Good Conoition
This album is so attractive and in very clean, nice condition. There's a little wear to the top edge at the front near the spine, but it's minor. The album was published following Pearl Harbor, so it dates around 1942 to 1943. The album contains fifty attractive blue tinted cards which children could paste in as they received them. I can't seem to find how they got them, but they appear to have been a Hi-Speed Gas Stations premium for customers' children who joined the Victory Club. This album shows all 50 photos, each of which takes an entire page. The album measures 9-3/4" across and 7-1/4" high.

Weatherbird Presents Super Circus Great Animal Show (circa 1949-56), Giles, Ken
13 Giles, Ken Weatherbird Presents Super Circus Great Animal Show (circa 1949-56)
U.S.A. Weatherbird Shoes Circa 1949-56 soft cover Fine condition
This is an astonishing find based on Super Circus, one of the earliest TV shows for children. It was sponsored by Weatherbird Shoes and began in Chicago in 1949 and ended in New York in 1956. I was born in 1951 and we had TV by'52, but I have no memory of this show. All I remember is Ding-Dong School with Arlene Francis! This booklet is in amazing condition -- crisp and clean as new with just a small bit of wear to a small section of top back edge. It's a pop-out book of animals with instructions on how to assemble them. There are five pages with all pieces intact. Measures 10" x 10-1/2" and is truly rare.
