24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
1 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
U.S.A. American Preservation Unknown date Unknown edition Disbound Articles Very Good Condition
I found these disbound articles in a box of Architectual Review Magazines which I bought at auction. I almost tossed them out until I realized how worthy they are. Each of the 24 focuses on a particular area within a state located anywhere in the country. They all derived from American Preservation magazine, so the color photographs are stunning. Each article is pretty long with many images. I wish I had more room to show them. Areas are these: New Orleans Lower Garden District; Providence, Rhode Island; Salem Massachusetts; Eutaw, Alabama's Greek Revival Architecture; Galveston, Texas; Mizner's Eden Palm Beach's Flamboyant Architecture; Brownsville, Texas; Waterford, Virginia; Helena, Montana; Columbus, Georgia; Madison, Indiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Oregon; Mt. Auburn in Cincinnati, Ohio; Manchester area of Pittsburgh; Savannah, Georgia; Powelton Village, Philadelphia; Saratoga Springs, New York; Crested Butte in the Rocky Mts.; Detroit's Woodward East; Oakland cemetery; Galena, Illinois and Bay View, A Summer Resort in Michigan. All are clean and stapled. Will still ship for $2 media in the U.S. as always.

Allis-Chalmers Annual Review 1944
2 Allis-Chalmers Annual Review 1944
Milawukee, Wisconsin Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company 1944 Annual, 1944 Card cover Very Good condition
This is a wonderful wartime report from Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing covering all aspects of the business including power generation; power distribution; processing items such as metals, coal, rock products, cement, forest products, petroleum, rubber, chemicals, food, and solvent oil; industrial; construction and agriculture; and transportation. The book is over-sized at 8-1/2"x 11" and has 80 pages. Minor small horizontal creases to spine, likely endemic to the publishing process, but otherwise clean and tightly bound. There is also a letter laid-in to accompany it. The book does have text, but it's the photographs and technical drawings that command your attention. VERY nice and not commonly found.

Judy Garland RKO Palace Theatre Program 1956
5 Judy Garland RKO Palace Theatre Program 1956
New York RKO Palace Theatre 1956 soft cover Very Good
Very nice clean program which is more leaflet than booklet, but not too often seen. It's not a play, more of a review with a number of different acts including the Amin Brothers, Paul Sydell, Joe Smith and Charlie Dale, Giselle and Francois Szony. Alan King (comedian), and primarily -- JUDY GARLAND! There's info about each act, but Judy takes center stage. Measures 6"x9" and is clean with no tears and no names. It was folded vertically at one time, but is totally flat now. Very nice.

Jules Podell's Copacabana Advertising Folder (1950's)
6 Jules Podell's Copacabana Advertising Folder (1950's)
New York City Jules Podell No sate circa 1950's Very good condition
Do you hear strains of Barry Manilow warbling "At the Copa, Copacabana ..."? Yes, this Copa is THAT Copa. I must say though that I'm surprised at the rather folksy look of this advertising mailer. The Copacabana, after all, was noted for its sparkly, pink haired Copa Girls. They're here all right, but this time in a "gay review" titled How To Parry A Millionaire starring Betty & Jean Kean with Norman Brooks, The Dunhills, Jonathan Lucas and Herb Fields. This, too surprises me because everybody who was anybody sang there -- Harry Bellefonte, Peggy Lee, Danny Thomas, Dean Martin etc. etc.. Also surprising is the Brazilian atmosphere paired with Chinese cuisine! Very interesting mix. Mailer closes to 5-1/2" x 7" and opens to 11" with a two page spread inside. Nice collectible from an iconic club. There is no date, but Michael Durso's orchestra was there all through the 50's.

Pictorial Review Embroidery Transfer Pattern #12616(Morning glories)
7 Pictorial Review Embroidery Transfer Pattern #12616(Morning glories)
New York Pictorial Review Unknown Very Good
Embroidery transfers seemed to have come in two colors -- yellow ink or blue ink. This one is marked blue, but it appears brown. It may have been used ,or it may have darkened, but on the back of the envelope it says that you might want to baste the pattern to the fabric and embroider it that way. This is a large motif in three parts designed for a bedspread. The pattern was issued by Pictorial Review magazine, a popular publication of the day

Pictorial Review Magazine July, 1931 (Dolly Dingle, Herbert Hoover)
8 Pictorial Review Magazine July, 1931 (Dolly Dingle, Herbert Hoover)
New York The Pictorial Review Company 1931 Volume XXXII, Number 10 soft cover Good-plus
I love this summer cover painted by McClelland Barclay (whom I've always called the guy whose name sounds like it's backwards!). It sets just the right tone for the pages of summer fashions inside. Barclay was best known as a pin-up artist, but he did a lot of commercial advertising work too. The best thing about this issue though is the intact page of Dolly Dingle paper dolls, totally pristine and uncut. Also, of interest is an article about Herbert Hoover in the role of grandfather. The magazine is clean and tightly bound measuring 10-1/2"x14". Mailing label to bottom front and a few small, light water spots only faults. Overall very nice. OVERSEAS ORDERS WELCOME, but please contact us with destination for exact quote, as this is an oversized item.

Showmen's Trade Review April 30, 1955 (Daddy Long Legs)
9 Showmen's Trade Review April 30, 1955 (Daddy Long Legs)
New York Charles E. "Chick" Lewis 1955 Vol. 62, No. 19 soft cover Very good
Very nice, clean trade magazine targeted at movie theater owners. All the ads and short articles are full of info on the state of the movie experience halfway through the 1950s. The big movie of this issue was definitely Daddy Long Legs, which starred Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron based the novel by Jean Webster who wrote it in 1912. The magazine measures 9" by slightly over 12". The ads of course are for adding comfort and modernity to the movie theater. Coca Cola ad on the back cover encourages its sale in the lobby.

The Georgia Review Spring/Summer 1990 (Joyce Carol Oates, Eudora Welty, Maxine Kumin, Rita Dove)
11 The Georgia Review Spring/Summer 1990 (Joyce Carol Oates, Eudora Welty, Maxine Kumin, Rita Dove)
Athens, Georgia University of Georgia 1990 Volume XLIV, Nos 1 and 2 soft cover Very good
This is a star-studded issue as thick as a paperback book with 233 pages, plus ads at back. It's a bit oversized too at 7"x10" and very clean with no names or writing, and no crease to spine. Only fault is a little rubbed spot at lower left corner of front cover. Magazine includes both black and white photographs and color art. The theme for this issue is Women in the Arts, so you will find contributions from such acclaimed writers, poets and artists as Joyce Carol Oates, Eudora Welty, Naomi Shihab Nye, Maxine Kumin, and Rita Dove, but those are just the ones I recognized! There are many more. If you collect any of the above this is a great addition to the collection.

The Golden Book Magazine January 1931: Maupassant,
12 The Golden Book Magazine January 1931: Maupassant, "Saki", Parkman, Maugham
New York City The Review of Reviews Corporation 1931 Janaury, 1931 Soft cover Very good
The older these magazines get the more I appreciate seeing the well-known writers showcased in their pages. This one has a poem by W.B. Yeats, "The Cap and Bells," plus these storytellers, "Saki"(H.H. Munro) with "Tobermory: What Happened When the Cat Learned to Talk and Too Well"; Guy De Maupassant with "The Dowry"; Francis Parkman with "Buffalo! Buffalo!" and W. Somerset Maugham with "Ashenden, The British Agent". Magazine is clean and tightly bound, but does have a couple defects -- a small tear to outer front cover which I repaired on the back with archival tape, a 1" loss of paper at the bottom of the spine, again repaired with archival tape. Magazine measures 8-1/2" x 11-1/2" and has 100 pages.
