America 100 Years Ago: Old Views (1946, complete 32 prints in folder)
1 America 100 Years Ago: Old Views (1946, complete 32 prints in folder)
Buremberg Jacob Mendelsohn 1946 Card folder Very good
It's amazing that this item remained intact since it came out in 1946 and then was given as a Christmas gift in 1981. There is a small inscription on the reverse side of the front cover which reads, "From Konstanze, Christmas, 1981." Everything is clean and nice with just one small spot of foxing to two prints and a light freckling to the folder. The prints are on paper and measure 7-1/2" x 10". All are views of historic places -- Albany on the Hudson, Baltimore, Boston City Hall, Cleveland, Detroit, Galveston, Jefferson City -- Missouri River, Kansas, Louisville, Lockport, Ohio -- Erie Canal, New York -- Broadway, New York, New York City Hall, New York -- Park and City Hall, New York Staten Island, New York Bay, New York and Brooklyn, Philadelphia National Bank, Philadelphia Girard's Bank, Richmond, Virginia, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Sacramento, St. Louis Court House, St. Charles -- Mississippi, Wheeling, West Virginia, Washignton General Post Office, Washington Patent Office, and Weston, Missouri.

E.H. Wright Advertising For Boys and Girls Down on the Farm
2 E.H. Wright Advertising For Boys and Girls Down on the Farm
Kansas City, Missouri E. H. Wright Company Unknown Early 20th Century (No date) soft cover
This is a cute little booklet designed to attract children, but also contains info for grown-ups to buy Wright's Condensed Smoke and Wright's Ham Pickle. The latter was huge -- 27 lbs of pickling salt which would cure as much as 280 pounds of meat! The booklet derived from the home office and was sent to smaller companies to send to their customers. In this instance it was stamped on the back F.H. Nickerson, Druggist, Greenwich, Ohio. The booklet is clean and nice with two tiny staple holes from mailing. Booklet measures 4-1/4"x7" and has 14 counted pages, each with color illustrations for the kids.

Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
3 Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
Kansas Fred Harvey Restaurants 1945 card cover Very good
Fred Harvey was a restaurant phenomenon. On this menu it sums up his amazing growth with this line, "from Cleveland to the Pacific coast." This particular menu was printed for the restaurant located in Union Station, Los Angeles and dated Monday, May 28, 1945. In addition to the patriotic cover it's interesting to see how much food has changed in America. Of course the prices are give-away by today's standards -- imagine a cocktail for 35 cents -- but you would rarely see such offerings as what Fred Harvey was serving up for lunch in '45. How about some braised smoked beef tongue with noodles and raisin sauce? Or maybe "our own baked beans with salt pork"? Nice collectible.

Postcard Empty Freighter Passing Bascule Bridge Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
4 Postcard Empty Freighter Passing Bascule Bridge Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
Chicago Curteich Unknown Very good
The intensity of color makes this card pop. The freighter is empty, just going under the Bascule drawbridge heading for Lake Superior. Card was never sent and there is no writing on the divided back. It's very clean with just a few isolated spots of minor edge wear. It will arrive in a plastic sleeve.

Postcard The Salt Sulphur Springs, Excelsior Springs, Mo.
5 Postcard The Salt Sulphur Springs, Excelsior Springs, Mo.
No Pulisher Location No Publisher stated 1908 Very Good condition
This hand-colored card is charming with its muted tones and the fact that there are people in it. I have seen this place on several cards, but never with travelers ready to check in to take the medicinal waters. The spring is natural and was discovered in 1880 located about 30 miles from Kansas City. By the time this card was made the area was booming -- lots of hotels ready to go and some still being built. The card was sent to Clara Bengmann in Concordia, Missouri from her father A. Bengmann who wrote, "I am well. Your Pa, A. Bengmann." The card was postmarked in Excelsior Springs in 1908. The back of the card appears to have creases but it doesn't. I think it was in an album which protected the corners from toning which the rest of back did. The differentiation of color is what caused it to look creased. The card will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.

Postcard Wadsworth Salt Works, Wadsworth, Ohio (early 1900's)
6 Postcard Wadsworth Salt Works, Wadsworth, Ohio (early 1900's)
Wadsworth, Ohio Joe Bender, Newsdealer No date, early 1900's Very Good Condition
Card is beautiful with bright saturated color thanks to chromolithography which also helps date it to the early 1900's. The card was never used, so no postmark, but there are two more clues to its age -- the words Post Card at the top and the fact that it was printed in Germany. Postage was also just a penny for the United States, Island Possessions, Cuba, Canada and Mexico. Card will arrive in brand new plastic sleeve.

7 Route From Liverpool to Great Salt Lake Valley Illustrated Prospectus (1997)
Bedford, Massachusetts Applewood Books 1997 soft cover Very Good Condition
This handsome item was a preview of the book to come. It's oversized at 9-1/4" x 12" and has nine counted pages including four containing sample pages of text and a black and white steel engraving by Frederick Piercy printed on the reverse side (recto) of the back cover. The image is protected by a crisp clean tissue guard. The idea was to advertise the book, but now it serves as an interesting augmentation to the book itself as well as a commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Mormon Pioneer Trail.

The Women of the Golden Horn by James Magner (SIGNED Poetry)
9 The Women of the Golden Horn by James Magner (SIGNED Poetry)
Cleveland, Ohio The Ryder Press 1976 soft cover Very Good Condition
I am very fond of the work of this poet, so you may have to take this with a grain of salt. But to appreciate both him and his work do type his name into google and bring up the blog post written by his friend. If it plays music at the end you've got the right one. Magner was a long-time John Carroll University professor, and several time nominee for the Pulitzer Prize. This booklet was SIGNED and inscribed by him with the date Sept. 14, 1988. Magner died in 2000. The booklet measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and has 68 pages.

11 Sabin, Peter; Williams, Gerry (editors) Studio Potter Journal Volume Eight, Number One (June 1979)
Goffstown, New Hampshire The Daniel Clark Foundation 1979 Volume Eight, Number 1 Card cover Very good condition
Studio Potter Journal which is at least 40 years old. It was only published twice a year. This is the first one for 1979. What's interesting about this one is two articles with photographs of the artist, Bernard Leach, a potter from Great Britain. The first article is "Bernard Leach 1887-1979: Towards A Standard" and the second is "Bernard Leach Two Recollections". The first one can be removed and opened up to reveal on the back a full two page poster image of Leach. Other topics are copper red glazes, producing brilliant copper reds in glass, copper red salt vapor glazes and a lot more about red copper. There are also cameos of various potters, their work, and their surroundings. The booklet measures 8-1/2" x 10-1/4" and has 78 pages with many black and white illustrations. The only faults are a bit of sunning to the spine and a small stain to the back cover. Overall very nice
