1 Air Trails Pictorial Magazine November 1944
Chicago Street and Smith Publications 1944 Soft cover Very Good
Wonderful oversized aviation magazine in excellent condition. Great vintage ads and lots of articles. Includes an article by Willie Ley entitled From Storch to ME 163. Other topics include tandem wings, camoflage models (miniatures), a mobile control tower, Northrop P-61 "Black Widow" and the Knight Twister. Beautiful color centerfold of the the Kingcobra. This is one of the most elegant booklets I've ever seen. The cover is made of substantial cardstock with raised letters at front, acetate endpapers both front and back, quality coated paper, and excellent black and white historic photographs, plus facsimiles of documents. The subject, Albert W. Boys Grown Tall; A Story of American Initiative (50 Cleveland Leaders, 1944)
6 Boys Grown Tall; A Story of American Initiative (50 Cleveland Leaders, 1944)
Cleveland, Ohio The Plain Dealer 1944 Hard Cover Very good
This book is not seen as often as you would think. I had one ten years ago and just now got this one. It was rather inexpensively put together, but it's a genealogical gold mine with fifty biographies of Clevelanders of the day. It's comprised of a group of articles reprinted in book form. They were originally written for the Sunday Cleveland Plain Dealer and appeared throughout March, April and May, 1944. Surnames included are: Black Cary, Case, Champion, Chapin, Codrington, Coe, Collens, Cox, Crawford, Dunn, Eaton, Eide, Emerson, Frackleton, Gerhauser, Girdler, Gund, Harshaw, Holliday, Hood, Hoyt, Humphrey, Johnson, Joyce, Klumph, Kulas, Ladds, Leece, Lewman, Lincoln, Martin, Mather, McCrea, McIntyre, Ogelbay, Otis, Reedall, Rivitz, Rogers, Rossiter, Sears, Smith, Stilwell, Weatherhead, Weaver, White, Woodruff and Wysor. Book measures 7"x10" and has 119 pages bound with a plastic comb. There's a drawing for each subject and lots of anecdotes.

Cabinet Card Little Girl with Flower Basket Sitting on Doorstep (Joshua Smith Studio, Chicago 1876-1886)
7 Cabinet Card Little Girl with Flower Basket Sitting on Doorstep (Joshua Smith Studio, Chicago 1876-1886)
Chicago Joshua Smith Studio Unknown Very good
Joshua Smith was no ordinary run-of-the-mill photographer who at this point in his career specialized in photographing children such as this cute little doorstep girl. In 1878 he won a coveted Silver Medal at the Paris Exhibition and in 1883 was elected president of the American Photographers Association. He also wrote many articles on chemicals and photography. There is no date on this photo, but research shows that the address on the back of it --206 North Clark Street, Chicago --was occupied by him from 1876-1886. The cabinet card is in sepia.

Change the Date Novelty Congratulations Postcard 1908
9 Change the Date Novelty Congratulations Postcard 1908
Unknown 1909 Very good
This is a truly unique postcard, as there are two operating wheels which allow you to change both the month and the day. Both work very well, but you have to grasp the slim edges with your nails to do it. Quite a novelty and very pretty in pastel. The card was mailed with no message to Bertha Randall of 310 W/. Smith Road, Medina, Ohio -- right here when I am! Only fault is an erasure at front of green mailbox where name of sender had been.

Charm: The Magazine for Women Who Work August, 1952
11 Charm: The Magazine for Women Who Work August, 1952
Street & Smith Publications 1952 August 1952 soft cover Good-plus
Charm is not a magazine you see too much, probably because there were fewer women in the workplace in 1952. I wasn't really too surprised that work played a small role in the magazine's content other than the clothes one wore to the office. But -- wow! -- what sophisticated clothes these were. I always think of poodle skirts and Donna Reed shirtwaists when I think of the 50's, but not for these women. High fashion! The other topics include the predictable -- child care and what to fix for dinner. But if you're a fashion junkie, this one is fabulous! Clean and tightly bound with a few creases to cover. Pages pristine.

Christmas Print by Ethel Franklin Botts 1906
13 Christmas Print by Ethel Franklin Botts 1906
Unknown 1906 Very good Botts, Ethel Franklin
This is a lovely print with a Christmas theme rendered by Ethel Franklin Botts, a student of the great Howard Pyle, as was Jessie Wilcox Smith. Her style is a bit different though with a hint of a collage look at times. She was very prolific and an important illustrator of the day. I don't know exactly what children's book this print derives from, but I do know that it's an illustration for a James Whitcomb Riley poem. The book was published in 1906. Clearly, this was a page of the book - I purchased it from a long time dealer who salvaged plates from disbound and damaged children's books. He was NOT a breaker. The print measures 6-1/2"x9-1/4" with the image measuring 5"x7-1/4". There is a remnant of paper from another page at left margin, but will not appear after framing. Several different scenes from same book available.

This is a lovely print which captures a sweet moment of children enjoying the treats brought by an old lady. It was rendered by Ethel Franklin Botts, a student of the great Howard Pyle, as was Jessie Wilcox Smith. Her style is a bit different though with a hint of a collage look at times. 16 Jessie Wilcox Smith Childhood's Great Illustrator; A Resume of Her Work 1863-1935 (1977)
Watkins Glen, New York Century House Inc. 1977 soft cover Very good
This is a surprisingly hard-to-find little booklet printed entirely in shades of blue, including illustrations by the subject. The booklet measures 6"x9" and is clean as a whistle inside and out. Flat crease to lower front corner is the only fault. Nice edition to any Jessie Wilcox Smith Wilcox collection, as it offers biographical and other material, including a bibliography and the Good Housekeeping covers.

Judy Garland RKO Palace Theatre Program 1956
17 Judy Garland RKO Palace Theatre Program 1956
New York RKO Palace Theatre 1956 soft cover Very Good
Very nice clean program which is more leaflet than booklet, but not too often seen. It's not a play, more of a review with a number of different acts including the Amin Brothers, Paul Sydell, Joe Smith and Charlie Dale, Giselle and Francois Szony. Alan King (comedian), and primarily -- JUDY GARLAND! There's info about each act, but Judy takes center stage. Measures 6"x9" and is clean with no tears and no names. It was folded vertically at one time, but is totally flat now. Very nice.

National Biscuit Company Luncheon Celebrating New Bakeries (Feb. 20, 1904)
19 National Biscuit Company Luncheon Celebrating New Bakeries (Feb. 20, 1904)
New York City National Biscuit Company 1904 Soft cover Good condition
This is a very scarce item, expensively created. It was published for those attending a luncheon in celebration of the National Biscuit Company's new bakeries at its buildings on 15th St. and 10th Ave. New York City. Opening page and a subsequent one shows gold and red design plus a color picture at back showing a little boy in a yellow raincoat clutching a box of crackers. Text is on heavy paper and includes the speeches of dignitaries. Measures 6-1'2" x 9-3/4" with many unnumbered pages. The inside is very clean but does show faint dampstaining to top margin of pages, a stain to front cover, a repair to lower spine which seems to be holding, and a chip to bottom spine and to lower edge. Overall a very good collectible rarely seen. (Bus.)

Elkhart, Indiana Elkhart High school 1939 soft cover Very good
Very nice souvenir gently kept by previous owner. No real defect of note and clean inside and out. At the time of publication (1939) this was considered "the finest prep athletic plant in Indiana and the Midwest."
