30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
1 30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
New Orlean, LA G.F. Castleden 1924-1929 Fine in Very Good Envelopes
These are a lovely find if you are enchanted by the architecture of New Orleans. I've never seen this many in one place ever, but I got them from the estate of a Castleden collector. Castleden was a British artist who emigrated to New Orleans and continued his career as an artist there. The cards were aimed at the tourist trade -- ten scenes for a quarter. Three of the original envelopes will accompany them, but the cards weren't in them, so I am uncertain which belong where. The scenes are Old World beautiful and include, but are not confined to, these subjects: Pirate Alley, the monastery of the Capuchian monks, the staircase of the old St. Louis Hotel, the courtyard of the old Spanish Arsenal, oyster schooners, the Spanish Gate of Cabildo, the Courtyard of the Little Theatre, and the Little Green Shutter Tea Room. None have been used and all are in excellent condition. The envelopes are a little worn, but not bad. The photo shows an array of cards, but not all -- there really are thirty!

Advertising Blotter Willard Battery Storage (Cleveland, Ohio, 1917)
2 Advertising Blotter Willard Battery Storage (Cleveland, Ohio, 1917)
St. Paul, Minnesota B&B 1917 Near fine condition
The colorful scene of a sportsman in a boat in what looks like a marshy area made me think this blotter might be newer than it is. I got out my magnifying glass and there it was though -- a 1917 date. The Willard Battery Storage company was founded in Cleveland in 1896 by Theodore Willard. It stayed the course al the way through WWII, but finally changed hands in 1952. As you can see, there's another comapany name on the blotter, the St. Thomas Storage Battery Company, but here's why. Under the phone number of St, Thomas it reads, "All Makes of Batteries Repaired. Authorized Willard Service Station for Elgin County.

3 America 100 Years Ago: Old Views (1946, complete 32 prints in folder)
Buremberg Jacob Mendelsohn 1946 Card folder Very good
It's amazing that this item remained intact since it came out in 1946 and then was given as a Christmas gift in 1981. There is a small inscription on the reverse side of the front cover which reads, "From Konstanze, Christmas, 1981." Everything is clean and nice with just one small spot of foxing to two prints and a light freckling to the folder. The prints are on paper and measure 7-1/2" x 10". British Empire Exhibition 1924 Official Guide
5 British Empire Exhibition 1924 Official Guide
Fleetway Press 1924 soft cover Very Good
This is a fun find because I've never had one before and it's a guide to a huge exhibition which celebrated Britain and the 58 - count 'em - countries that made up the Empire in 1924. All of the countries participated with the exception of Gambia and Gilbraltar, so when King George V opened the exhibition on April 23, 1924 (St. George's Day), it was a moment to remember. The second photo shows a world map that came from the pocket at the inside front cover. The guide measures 5-1/2"x8-1/2" and has 128 pages illustrated with photographs. Great ads throughout, plus those contained in the advertising section in photo three. The exhibit and the guide would remind you of a World's Fair.

7 Centenary St. Stephen's Parish 1843-1943 (Philadelphia)
Phildelphia, PA St. Stephen's Church 1943 soft cover Good
Clean tightly bound centenary celebration keepsake. Brown wraps feel very supple and are marred only by small tears to the yapped edges which is very common due to the fact that the edges extend beyond the text. Corners also show flat creasing, but have been strengthened by me at back with mending tissue to keep them from snapping off (see photo). There are no names or writing. Printed on quality coated paper and illustrated profusely throughout with black and white photographs. Also includes an extensive text. Not commonly found. Measures 8"x11" and has 192 pages. Choirs From the Basilicas and the Vatican (Program Laid-in) 1919
9 Choirs From the Basilicas and the Vatican (Program Laid-in) 1919
New York St. Gregory Musical society Inc. 1919 soft cover Very Good
This two-piece souvenir of a 1919 evening of liturgical music marks the first time in history that the choirs from the Roman Basilicas and the Vatican performed outside of Rome. The program does not indicate the city directly, but an Ohio reference on back cover and the fact that the location was St. Clair Avenue leads us to believe it had to have been Cleveland. The most important piece, however, is the larger brochure which measures 8x10" and is profusely illustrated and filled with information about the choirs and their history. Although unpaginated, we counted 24. Cover, though simple, is banded in gold with ecclisastical decoration.

Christmas Postcard A Christmas Reverie Santa with Pipe and Smoke 1908
10 Christmas Postcard A Christmas Reverie Santa with Pipe and Smoke 1908
1908 Very good
An ornate design with a shiny gold background and embossing make this one a standout. There is a slight postmark to the front, so the price has been adjusted for same, but it's still a beauty with just a little corner wear! Note the kids in the whirl of smoke from Santa's pipe. There's no indication of origin, but there is a printed notation on the back that says St. Nicholas Series No. 3. The message on the divided back reads "How did you find everybody in Logansport? Am going to Niad (?) this afternoon and wish you could be there too. That candy was just fine. Mary." The card is addressed to Clara McGlorie of Logansport, Indiana and postmarked 1908.

About two decades ago when I began my business I had one of these calendars for 1951. I thought it was charming, but never again did I see one until recently. It's in nice condition too and no one pulled off any of the small monthly pages. The cover photo is printed in sepia and the big photos inside are in black and white. Dedication of the New St. John the Baptist Slovak Church (Campbell, Ohio 1954)
15 Dedication of the New St. John the Baptist Slovak Church (Campbell, Ohio 1954)
Campbell, Ohio Church Dedication Committee 1954 Card cover Very good condition
Very nice, clean dedication program and souvenir with no names or writing. The booklet was made with a suede-like cover, which after lying around all these years, needed to be vacuumed. So I did just that. This dedication was for the new church which replaced the original from 1914. There are numerous photographs of the church as it was being built and after it was finished. Other items are a history and photos of the congregation, as well as letters and photos of dignities such as Pope Pius XII and various bishops. There's also two lists of events -- the religious and the secular, plus lists of patrons and nice local ads.
