1 12 Post Cards Hand Colored Butcharts Gardens Victoria, British Columbia
England The Gowen, Sutton Company Ltd. Unknown circa 1930-s-40's card cover Very good
I have seen these cards individually, but never in this orignal set. All twelve are there and all are clean without any marks or writing. The folder is made of card stock which has a suede-like feel and is designed with a cut-out oval on the front to show part of the first card which is a scene of the Butchart residence. All scenes are hand colored and produced in real photogravure. The folder measures 4" high and 6-1.4" across. ORDERS OUTSIDE THE U.S. ARE WELCOME. Christmas Greetings From the Regiment of Midshipmen (circa 1960's)
2 Christmas Greetings From the Regiment of Midshipmen (circa 1960's)
The Regiments of Midshipmen Unknown Heavy Cradstock Fine
Beautiful, unused Christmas card fashioned from especially heavy card stock for use by the Regiment of Midshipmen. There is no date, but I am pretty sure that the image on the face depicts the chapel which may well date it from the 60's. It measures 6"x7x1/4" and opens to reveal a color painting of the U.S. frigate Constitution.

3 Ernestine Ruben: a retrospective exhibition of photography (1992)
New Jersey The Walters Gallery of Rutgers 1992 Limited edition of 1000 soft cover Very good condition Reben, Ernestine
This is a very interesting design and a very interesting exhibition catalog -- both are unique. The catalog is over sized at 9-1/4" tall and 12-1/4" wide with 37 pages on heavy card stock, the last of which is a fold-out. The white covers are covered with thick clear plastic for protection. There's also two laid-in cards showing the Jewish cemetery in Prague, the oldest in Europe, and a computer generated drawing of the installation of the exhibition. Therese items are in the built-in brown folder. There is also an essay written by Vicki Goldberg titled "ernestine ruben and the lasting experiment."

Gages The Pipe Machinery Company Wickliffe, Ohio Catalog 1958 Prices, 1961 Stock Report
4 Gages The Pipe Machinery Company Wickliffe, Ohio Catalog 1958 Prices, 1961 Stock Report
Wickliffe, Ohio The Pipe Machinery Company 1961 Hard cover, spiral binding Very good condition
A silver and black graphic and a hard surface cover announce that this catalog is something special. The only fault is a crease to lower front corner. I tried to flatten it, but with minimal success. The catalog measures 8-1/2" x 11-1/4" and has 84 pages. But at the back of the catalog are THREE surprises -- the company's January, 1961 Stock Report, a Price list for 1958, and a brochure for the company's Hilo Set Plugs. Very nice find!

Hartman Stock Farm Horse Department 1905 (Columbus, Ohio)
5 Hartman Stock Farm Horse Department 1905 (Columbus, Ohio)
Columbus, Ohio Hartman Stock Farm 1904 soft cover Very good condition
This is a horse lover's information/advertising book issued by S.C. and M.D. Hartman, importers and breeders of Percheron Draft and German Coaching horses for their Columbus, Ohio farm. The Hartmans also operated a poultry department, but the only reference to that here is a full page color ad and a few pictures of outbuildings and a couple pages of info. The spotlight is definitely on the horses. Contents include, among other topics, these: the Barb, or the horse of the Sahara; an anatomical study of the horse; a study of the mouth of a horse; description and illustrations of Hartman Farm; origin of the Percheron; imported Percherons, home bred Percherons; and the German coach horse. Book is clean and tightly bound, measures 7-1/2" x 10" and has 189 pages printed on quality coated paper. Only faults are a spine crease and a bit of light foxing to exterior page edges. Otherwise quite good. Hard to find.

Histoire de 3 Petits Lapins (History of the Three Little Rabbits)1945
6 Histoire de 3 Petits Lapins (History of the Three Little Rabbits)1945
Paris Fernand Nathan 1945 Card cover
Cute little book written in the French language for reading aloud to little people, or for learning to read French. It's small, measuring 5-1/2"x5" and has 10 full color pages with cute art and a short text. Booklet is clean and tightly bound with just a small bit of edge wear and former bookseller's stock number on a sticker at front. It's an old one though, so I did not have the courage to try to remove it.Rather hard to find.

Invitation 25th Anniversary Pomorean Literary Society Scio College (Ohio 1893)
7 Invitation 25th Anniversary Pomorean Literary Society Scio College (Ohio 1893)
Scio, Ohio Pomorean Literary Association Scio College 1893 Near fine
Pretty invitation professionally printed and then decorated with flowers and ribbon by hand. The invitation is one-sided and printed on heavy card stock with decorative scalloped edges on all four sides. It measures 4"x6-1/2" and is in very nice condition. I failed to find anything about the sponsoring group, but Scio College had more lives than a cat. It began as Rural Seminary, a Methodist Episcopal school, and then became New Market College named for its town, and then it was the One Study University which required students to take classes only in their major. That apparently didn't worked out that well, as they dropped the idea and named it Scio College for the town of Scio. Enrollment dropped, however, so the pharmacy department was taken over by the University of Pittsburgh and everything else merged with Mt. Union. A scarce item, but a nice find for the right person.

Munsey Magazine January 1896
10 Munsey Magazine January 1896
New York Frank A. Munsey 1896 soft cover Very Good
It's interesting how Munsey Magazine had a HUGE circulation and yet it's less well known than Century, Harper's and Frank Leslie's. I just got six issues though so am happy as a clam. Before I tell you about this one though here's a fun fact about Munsey -- it was considered a bit racy and some stores would not stock it due to its "undressed women and undressed statuary." This issue is clean and tightly bound. A previous owner trimmed off the overhang (known as yapped edges) -- a common reaction after they acquire a million small tears. Great ads, fiction and articles await. The most signifiant article is one about sculptor James E. Kelly entitled Sculptor of American History. Among Kelly's accomplishments are Sheridan's Ride and the Buford Monument at Gettysburg. Also of interest is a journey through Europe following the footsteps of the poet Lord Byron. Much discussion of popular culture too with photos of big names in the arts.

Munsey Magazine March 1896
11 Munsey Magazine March 1896
New York Frank A. Munsey 1896 March Issue soft cover Good
It's interesting how Munsey Magazine had a HUGE circulation and yet it's less well known than Century, Harper's and Frank Leslie's. I just got six issues though so am happy as a clam. Before I tell you about this one though here's a fun fact about Munsey -- it was considered a bit racy and some stores would not stock it due to its "undressed women and undressed statuary." But don't get too excited -- check out picture two! This issue is clean and tightly bound, but as you can see, there's some chipping to the bottom edge, thanks to the yapped edges which all but beg for this to happen. A previous owner trimmed off the overhang -- a common reaction. Great ads, fiction and articles await. The best of the latter include a piece on the Adams family (think Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams), a very nice look at the impressive homes of Virginia and an illustrated profile of Scottish-American sculptor J. Massey Rhind. There's also tons of stuff on the actors and actresses of the day with portraits. Altogether fun!

Magazine offers great ads, fiction and articles The best of the latter includes a piece about the Carroll family of Viriginia (Charles Carroll); and two back to back articles that almost share the same title -- first, Types of Fair Women and then Types of Modern War Ships. I guess they're both called She, so why not? There's also tons of stuff on the actors and actresses of the day, as well as a piece on current artists. with portraits. Altogether fun!

Print Omaha, Nebraska Churches
13 Print Omaha, Nebraska Churches
Omaha, Nebraska Unknown Unknown Very good
I bought this at an estate sale along with a small stack of other attractive prints depicting various landmarks of Omaha, Nebraska. The odd thing is there's no information other than the site and its origin. The churches pictured here are identified beneath them beginning at the top left and moving clockwise -- Trinity Cathedral, Central United Presbyterian, Kountze Memorial and First Baptist. The print is on heavy card stock and is clean and attractive. Only fault is a tiny loss of paper at the lower right corner, but this would not be seen once framed. The print measures 7-3/4"x9".

This is one of the largest and most beautiful of the theater souvenirs. It's really big at 10" x 13" and has fold-out covers, both front and back. All pages are made of card stock and saturated with color. Especially lovely is the large printing which reminds you of the songs. 16 Wharf Restaurant Dinner Menu, Sheraton-British Colonial Hotel, Nassau Bahamas
Nassau, Bahams Sheraton-British Colonial Hotel Unknown Card cover Very good condition
Very handsome menu for the Wharf Restaurant which was located in the Sheraton-British Colonial Hotel in Nassau, Bahamas. As is often the case, there is no date here, but a complete dinner cost just $8.50, though there were some exceptions. Cocktails -- martinis, daquiris and Manhattans-- were $3. Also, requiring an extra fee were sea food appetizers and some steaks and of course the spit-roasted suckling pig. Dessert was included in the flat fee. Willie Monroe Souvenirs of First Communion May 29, 1898
17 Willie Monroe Souvenirs of First Communion May 29, 1898
1898 Fine condition
This is small collection of Catholic religious items given to a child named Willie Monroe from Mamma Lee on the occasion of his First Communion which took place on Pentecost Sunday May 29, 1898. The items were grouped together in a beat-up envelope, but the contents are absolutely pristine. The information stated was found on the back of the holy card. Other items include: two felt ovals with paper labels reading St. Gerard Patron of Mothers and Apostleship of Prayer in League with the Sacred Heart; a small medal showing Mary, the Mother of Jesus, on a blue ribbon attached to a paper doily; and the best -- a felt "book" showing the images of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Simon Stock, likely hand-stitched and decorated with a bow at the bottom and another with a satin heart at the top. Very sweet.
