B&O Railroad Miniature Metal Sign and Three B&O Color Postcards
3 B&O Railroad Miniature Metal Sign and Three B&O Color Postcards
Earlton, New York; Washington Audio-Visual Designs & Washington Chapter NRHS 1967 All In fine Condition
This is a unique offering -- a small 3" diameter metal sign for the B&O Railroad, offered in the 1950's as a premium for Post cereals. The collector who owned it paired it with three color postcards, one of which is dated 1967. None have been used or written on and all are in excellent condition. The dated one was published by Washington Chapter NRHS and shows a President Class 4-6-2 pulling the B&O's Ambassador past Ivy City as it leaves Union Station Washington, D.C. Dec. 16, 1951. The other cards show "The Cincinnatian" train No 53 westbound from Toledo, Ohio July, 1956 and the B&O Mikado standing at rest during the final steam passenger run May, 1958 from Cleveland to Halloway, Ohio. We have several more pairings of metal signs and cards.

Chautauqua Summer Center For Music and Drama Season Program 1942 (Plus Related Ephemera)
4 Chautauqua Summer Center For Music and Drama Season Program 1942 (Plus Related Ephemera)
Chautauqua, New York Chautauqua Institution June, 1942 Vol. 7 No. 117 soft cover Very Good
Very nice clean program which shows the schedule for the entire summer of music and theatre at Chautauqua during the summer of 1942, as well as articles and photographs of the performers. Measures 8-1/2"x 11-1/4" and has 32 pages. There is a vertical crease down the center from having been folded, as so many programs were, but the crease is light. What's interesting about this particular one is the stuff I found inside. The previous owner was a young woman, Elizabeth Lorson, from Wooster, Ohio who was in New York City hoping to be taken on by a voice trainer of merit. Someone from back home wrote the following Western Union telegram (includes envelope) to her which was sent to the Parnassus Club in 1941. It reads, "Fear not about missing the boat. Most likely overcrowded. Anyway advise trying man Genevieve works with Sidney Dietch. His approach remotely like Griffith. Feel winter in New York with right teacher most valuable. You can always come home to me if conditions unhappy. Will write very soon. Lovingly, Eve." Dietch was one of the very finest in the city. Also, included is a postcard stating that the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra would be broadcasted on the radio August 10th, 1941. The message on the reverse is written by the young lady seeking a voice teacher. It reads "Just got mother's letter telling me May is probably coming. Will sure be glad to see who ever comes. Don't suppose you'd get this before Saturday. Will write soon. Love, Betty." She apparently was part of the music program at Chautauqua in 1941. The final item is a photo of an opera singer named Helen Jepson previously from Akron, Ohio, clipped from an unknown source. Wooster is close enough to Akron to have inspired Betty! (Elizbeth)

Excelsior Club Cleveland New Year's Eve 1927 Musical Program
7 Excelsior Club Cleveland New Year's Eve 1927 Musical Program "The Good Old Days"
Cleveland, Ohio The Excelsior Club 1927 soft cover Good-plus condition
Ephemera from the Excelsior Club, a social venue founded in Cleveland in 1872, is not often seen, but here we have a program from New Year's Eve 1927. The club was much like the Cleveland Union Club, but for upscale Jewish families with a Germanic cultural background. From the beginning help from the Halle family of Halle's department store fame was integral to the club's success. The program shows the scenes of a musical "The Good Old Days" which required members to take to the stage as singers, dancers, musicians, actors and tambourine players. Looks like great fun and is a glimpse at a Cleveland landmark that closed in 1931 when the Excelsior melded into the similar Oakwood Club. Their last building became part of Case Western Reserve University. Program measures 5-1/2" x 9-1/2" and opens to two pages, plus another at back. Overall good, but it had been folded horizontally. I ironed it and it is now flat. Program includes many names.

Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
8 Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
Kansas Fred Harvey Restaurants 1945 card cover Very good
Fred Harvey was a restaurant phenomenon. On this menu it sums up his amazing growth with this line, "from Cleveland to the Pacific coast." This particular menu was printed for the restaurant located in Union Station, Los Angeles and dated Monday, May 28, 1945. In addition to the patriotic cover it's interesting to see how much food has changed in America. Of course the prices are give-away by today's standards -- imagine a cocktail for 35 cents -- but you would rarely see such offerings as what Fred Harvey was serving up for lunch in '45. How about some braised smoked beef tongue with noodles and raisin sauce? Or maybe "our own baked beans with salt pork"? Nice collectible.

Invitation 25th Anniversary Pomorean Literary Society Scio College (Ohio 1893)
9 Invitation 25th Anniversary Pomorean Literary Society Scio College (Ohio 1893)
Scio, Ohio Pomorean Literary Association Scio College 1893 Near fine
Pretty invitation professionally printed and then decorated with flowers and ribbon by hand. The invitation is one-sided and printed on heavy card stock with decorative scalloped edges on all four sides. It measures 4"x6-1/2" and is in very nice condition. I failed to find anything about the sponsoring group, but Scio College had more lives than a cat. It began as Rural Seminary, a Methodist Episcopal school, and then became New Market College named for its town, and then it was the One Study University which required students to take classes only in their major. That apparently didn't worked out that well, as they dropped the idea and named it Scio College for the town of Scio. Enrollment dropped, however, so the pharmacy department was taken over by the University of Pittsburgh and everything else merged with Mt. Union. A scarce item, but a nice find for the right person.

Los Angeles County (Booklet 1930's)
10 Los Angeles County (Booklet 1930's)
Los Angeles Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County No date circa 1930's soft cover Fine
The colorful cover of this attractive booklet is definitely an eye catcher and the condition is superb. At first glance it appears to be a travel guide, but is not. It's a sort of state of the union telling both residents and tourists all the many reasons to be glad they're there! Oddly, it has no date, but the last year quoted for research and statistics is 1936. Black and white photographs abound and are printed on coated paper. Covers all facets of county life. Measures 5-1/4"x7-1/2". An added bonus is a flyer tucked inside from a San Francisco restaurant called The Challenger offering an economy plate luncheon at thirty cents! Two choices -- sausages or spring lamb, both with sides.

Los Angeles To-Day July, 1924
11 Los Angeles To-Day July, 1924
Los Angeles, CA Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce 1924 soft cover Very Good
Beautiful booklet with a great cover image, plus numerous color photos inside which augment an informative text written for the tourist. Also at the front is a Union Pacific ad which tells visitors about train service. The entire booklet is devoted to the beauty of the area and things for tourists to see and do. But those who love California architecture will also love the emphasis on the housing styles. 32 pretty pages. Measures 5"x6-3/4". The only fault was rusted staples, which I took out and put in new ones. (Travel Box I)

Oberlin College 1833-1933
12 Oberlin College 1833-1933
Oberlin, Ohio Oberlin College 1923 soft cover Very good
Very nice short history and state of the union at Oberlin College in 1923. Really nice photographs throughout, a few large ones and many small. A couple of the most interesting ones point out that Oberlin was ahead of the times with its emphasis on sports for women (see photo). Booklet measures 8"x11" and has 29 counted pages. Very attractive design with white margins to cream colored pages.

Official Program Twelfth Biennial Convention Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America Atlantic City, New Jersey 1938
13 Official Program Twelfth Biennial Convention Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America Atlantic City, New Jersey 1938
U.S.A. Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America 1938 Card cover Very good condition
Very nice clean program with just two very tiny tears to top edge of front cover. It says on the bottom of that cover that it's a delegate's memo book and as such offers blank pages for notes on one side of the pages and information on the other. This delegate whose name is at the top -- Richard Wysocki -- did not write in it. In this case it would have been even better if he had. Nevertheless, early union material is always a great find. This program measures 4" x 9-1/4".

Postcard Fred Harvey's Lunch Room Union Station, Chicago (1920's)
14 Postcard Fred Harvey's Lunch Room Union Station, Chicago (1920's)
Fred Harvey 1920's Very Good Condition
This card is unused, so no dates written by sender and no post mark. The only clue to find a date here is the pink cloche hat on the lady in the foreground next to the two men. The cloche hat is a Roaring Twenties fashion favorite. Fred Harvey was the restaurant king of his day. This one was beautiful and located in the Chicago train station. Card is clean and nice and will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.

Print Union Railway Station Omaha, Nebraska
16 Print Union Railway Station Omaha, Nebraska
Unknown Location Unknown Origin Unknown Date Very Good
I bought this at an estate sale along with a small stack of other attractive prints depicting various landmarks of Omaha, Nebraska. The odd thing is there's no information other than the name of the site and the city. The print is older and shows just a hint of toning to bottom margin, but is otherwise without fault. Measures 9-1/4" across and 7-3/4" tall. Would be very attractive framed. Other views of Omaha available. This one depicts the Union Railway Building. The people seem to still be using horses and buggies for transportation, so this helps date it.

Somerville, Massachusetts Alternative Education Project Inc. 1978 Volume 12, No. 5 Card cover Very good condition

Real Photo Postcard Union Picnic St. Mary's, west Virginia 1911
18 Real Photo Postcard Union Picnic St. Mary's, west Virginia 1911
Unknown 1911 Very Good
How charming -- a picnic with no coolers, no grills, nothing but a pretty place, hampers of food, friends and family, and mown grass to sit on. This event took place in 1911 in the Ohio River town of St. Mary's, W. Va., a very small place which got its name from a man who claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary pass by on the river in a boat. The card was postmarked April 21, 1911 from St. Mary's and sent to Mary Morgan of Logan, Ohio. The message on the divided back reads, "Dear Cousin, Glad to hear from you. Am very busy, will answer your letter as soon as I can. A crowd of us were over home Sunday and spent the day. Sadie." Card has a glossy surface and is quite nice save a small crease to upper right corner.
