1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
1 1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
Unknown Location Johnson and Ward circa 1863 later printing
The 1862 map of the territories of Washington and Oregon is a lovely thing with its hand coloring and handsome double face font for lettering. If you look in the lower corner you see the number 57 which indicates it was the 57th plate in Alvin J. Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas published originally by Johnson and Browning in 1862. The question is when was this particular one printed? It states on the map that the publisher was Johnston and Ward which means it's around 1863, as that's the year the company's name changed from Johnson and Browning to Johnson and Ward. The map was made at the start of the Civil War with much land especially in eastern Oregon not settled, but you can also pick out sites such as Mt. Ranier and Fremont's Peak among others, plus you can see the route proposal for the Pacific Railroad. The map measures roughly 13" x 17". It's a guess though because it's been professionally double matted snd that's all I can see of it. Only faults are a dark spot to upper right corner and a small surface mar to mat at about 3-1/2" down from the top left. There is a small tear to the mat and a thin indentation next to it on the map itself, but the paper is not torn. The map including matting mesures 18" x 22". Will ship for $2 in U.S.

Carnarvon and North Wales Illustrated Guide Book (Ward Lock and Company 1921-22)
2 Carnarvon and North Wales Illustrated Guide Book (Ward Lock and Company 1921-22)
London Ward Lock and Company 1921-22 Eighth Edition Hard cover Good condition
A trip to Wales in the early 1920's provided beautiful hotels, many sites to be seen, and lots of information in a guide such as this one. The guide measures 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" and has six clean, nice fold-out maps as well as other city plan in text. There are also illustrated with black and white photographs and ads for things needed for the tourist. The only faults are some wrinkles to the spine and few small tears to some map which I repaired with archival tape which is almost invisible. There's only one tear per map due to the need to be careful when opening.

The Lakeside Hospital Dedication (Cleveland) 1931
5 The Lakeside Hospital Dedication (Cleveland) 1931
Cleveland, Ohio The Lakeside Hospitsl 1931 soft cover
A most interesting ephemera item published upon the dedication of the hospital on June 17, 1931 at Cleveland's Severance Hall. The Lakeside Hospital was built to replace the old one on the shore of Lake Erie and became the central unit of University Hospitals Medical Center where it was joined by Hanna House, the nurses' dormitories, the power plant and the new Rainbow Hospital. The booklet is oversized at 9"x11-1/2" and shows a strong black and white architectural detail on cover. Most of the contents consist of full page black and white photographs which show an aerial view marking the various surrounding structures, the facade from several angles, the transfer of the first patient from the old hospital to the new, the entrance lobby, a corner view of the Public ward, the Public Ward solarium, a private room, the solarium of the private ward, the teaching amphitheater, an entrance hall to the dispensary, the living room in the nurses' dorms, the living room of the Doctor's Home, the library, and more. Lists Board of Directors and offers a 60 year overview of the hospitals's history. Hard to find. Tiny stain to top front cover and mild toning to cover only faults.

6 Beecher, Mrs. Henry Ward; Howells, William Dean; Catherwood, Mary Hartwell; The Ladies Home Journal July, 1894
Philadelphia Curtis Publishing Company July, 1894 Vol. XI, No. 8 Soft cover Very good condition
This over-sized magazine is very attractive. I bought a whole box full, all of which are nice. Some are already on here, but I will be happy to look through my inventory for a specific issue from the 1890's to the first 15 years of the 1900's. The magazine measures 11-1/2" x 16" with 33 pages. There's a little bit of toning around the edges of the cover, but the pages are white. In this issue there's lots to read. Here's some examples -- Fiction; a symposium titled "What Constitutes A Good Husband" with six women sharing; a bio on novelist Mary Hartwell Catherwood who was born in Ohio, but wrote French Canadian romances; instructions on embroidering a luncheon set, ecclesiastical embroidery, and crocheting doilies; William Dean Howells on his literary passions; making a suburban home; home furnishings in Paris; vacation days; and the art of wearing white. Really good ads too!

Reminiscences of a Bostonian. Susan Lawrence Oliver (1952), Oliver, Susan Lawrence
11 Oliver, Susan Lawrence Reminiscences of a Bostonian. Susan Lawrence Oliver (1952)
Boston, Massachusetts Self-published 1952 Hard cover Very good condition
A lovely memoir by a woman from Boston who shares her genealogy and the highlights of her life. It's a booklet in hard cover (only 88 pages), but she looks back to stories her family told and tells her own memories too -- school days, a family wedding, an afternoon with Julia Ward Howe, a burglar, a trip to Staten Island, movies and radio, an earthquake, a dog, the summer resorts and more. If you're wondering if she hangs on your family tree here's some info: her mother was Susan Lawrence Mason and was born in 1839. Susan Oliver's grandfather was Rev. Charles Mason, rector of St. Peter's Church and lived in a nice house at 4 Chestnut Street in Salem. Book measures 6" x 9-1/4". What a gem for the right person.

New York City Watson-Guptill 1954 Volume 18, Number 8 soft cover Very Good Condition
I have a LOT of these, so if this isn't the issue you're look for let me know. But this one is beautiful -- crisp and clean and sporting a very attractive cover. Inside there's a sizable article about Degas and one about the 25h birthday of of the Limited Editions Club, a favrorite with book collectors back in the day, partly because of the art that made the books beautiful and the fame of many of the artists -- such as Lynn Ward, Friz Eichenberg, Bruno Bramanti and many others from America and around the world. Other features include Saul Bass, Ralph Hulett and the use of topographic symbols in art. Magazine is is very clean and tightly bound. Only fault is a few little surface indentations on cover with no loss of color. Measures 9" x 11-1/2' and has 72 pages. Many illustrations, most in black and white, but some in color.
