15 Postcards Views of Monticello
1 15 Postcards Views of Monticello
Virginia Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Inc. Unknown Near Fine
Beautiful glossy set of 15 postcards, each showing a different aspect of Monticello, the exquisite Charlottesville, Virginia home of President Thomas Jefferson. The cards are slightly oversized at 4" high and 6-1/4" across. None have been used. All are nicely kept with sharp corners. Only fault is light toning around the edges of the reverse sides. 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
2 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
U.S.A. American Preservation Unknown date Unknown edition Disbound Articles Very Good Condition
I found these disbound articles in a box of Architectual Review Magazines which I bought at auction. I almost tossed them out until I realized how worthy they are. Each of the 24 focuses on a particular area within a state located anywhere in the country. They all derived from American Preservation magazine, so the color photographs are stunning. Each article is pretty long with many images. I wish I had more room to show them. Areas are these: New Orleans Lower Garden District; Providence, Rhode Island; Salem Massachusetts; Eutaw, Alabama's Greek Revival Architecture; Galveston, Texas; Mizner's Eden Palm Beach's Flamboyant Architecture; Brownsville, Texas; Waterford, Virginia; Helena, Montana; Columbus, Georgia; Madison, Indiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Oregon; Mt. Auburn in Cincinnati, Ohio; Manchester area of Pittsburgh; Savannah, Georgia; Powelton Village, Philadelphia; Saratoga Springs, New York; Crested Butte in the Rocky Mts.; Detroit's Woodward East; Oakland cemetery; Galena, Illinois and Bay View, A Summer Resort in Michigan. All are clean and stapled. Will still ship for $2 media in the U.S. as always.

A Pocket Guide To Western Africa (For Military Personnel 1943 WWII)
3 A Pocket Guide To Western Africa (For Military Personnel 1943 WWII)
Washington D.C. Special Service Division, Army Services Forces, United States Army 1943 soft cover Very Good
Handy and truly pocket-sized guide for WII soldiers serving in Africa. It measures just 4-1/4" x 5-1/4" and has 39 pages of information. There's also a map, a short history of the region, and what to do and not to do. Booklet is very clean and attractive. An example of the cautions is this one "Treat an Af5rican with some formality. Most Africans dislike horseplay and backslapping. They like to shake hands." I also have other guides for soldiers in other countries available.

Chinese Comic Journey To the West (20 booklets in Box, 1996)
10 Chinese Comic Journey To the West (20 booklets in Box, 1996)
Shanghai Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House 1996 7532216462 / 9787532216468 Presumed First Soft covers Fine books and VG Box
I bought this last night at a book and paper sale -- what a surprise! I have been going to this place for 20 years and never have I seen any any Asian items I can recall. The box is covered with blue cloth and is clean and sturdy. Inside are two stacks of small comic books, ten on each side. The text is in Chinese, but the black and white drawings tell a story too. The little books measure 3-1/2" x 5". I was able to translate much, but the same exact specific item was used in every translation site which was a problem because two books are missing from that one. Mine has ALL TWENTY. The translated ones are:Dragon Palace I; Dragon Palace II; Two Mountains; Gao Laozhuang; Quicksand; White Tiger; True Hawk; Red Baby; Tongtian River; Golden Pocket; True Monkey Ling; Flaming Mountain; Fake West; Pirates of the Caribbean; Lion Camel; No Bottom Hole; Battle of Qinglongshen; and Retrieve the Scriptures. As stated the little booklets are clean and attractive, as is the box which has only a grey spot to the title box on the outside. A very nice collectible.

We often see later issues of this humor magazine, but the ones from the 60's are a bit harder to find. Here we have the November, 1964 issue in clean, tightly bound condition. In fact, it's fairly remarkable given the pulp paper on which its printed. Among the zany articles are these: The Transylvanian Teen Scene, the Big War, A Martian Writes Home from Earth, Way Out -- West, How I Saw Europe on 58 Cents A Day; and A Sunday At Coney Island. The magazine measures 8"x10-1/2" and is clean and bright. Black and white cartoon format.

Hearst's Magazine May, 1920 (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Howard Chandler Christy)
14 Hearst's Magazine May, 1920 (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Howard Chandler Christy)
New York, New York International Magazine Company 1920 Vol. XXXVII, No. 4 Soft cover Good-plus
Hearst Magazine was one of the most beautiful publications of the day. The cover art alone caught the readers' eyees while the huge content inside kept them reading. If you love short stories this is fiction heaven, but there's also articles too -- about J.P. Morgan's London residence, modern hotels, the DuPonts, science topics such as Luther Burbank and healthier babies and an article by West Virginia Senator David W. Elkins who opined that when it came to business, the United States Senate was 100 years behind the times. Also nice in this issue are illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy and true ghost stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Magazine is huge at 10-1/2" x 14". There's minor wear to lower edge of front cover, a few small spot of foxing at last couple pages and a small repair to top of spine with archival tape done by me. Ships for $2 in the U.S.

Official World's Fair Weekly Century of Progress Chicago, 1933
20 Official World's Fair Weekly Century of Progress Chicago, 1933
chicago A Century of Progress Internatioanl Exhibition 1933 Vol. I, No. 8 soft cover Very condition
From May to October 1933 the entity overseeing the Chicago World's Fair published a full-out magazine with stories about the exhibits and information on what to do each day. The highlights for this week, the fourth, went on until June 24th. The big event was the Zoo of Dragons. I took a picture of both the ad and the opening pages of the story itself -- quite an endeavor! Other stories include a convention bringing together scientists from all over the world; the exhibition of the painting, Whistler's Mother, which was on loan from a museum in Paris; the story of neon lights; log rolling; faster trains; the art of Sweden; a cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg; an Old West Town and much more. Magazine is in clean, tightly bound condition -- very nice. Measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 64 pages.
