1 "A Scottish Evening" Derwentwater Print
Unknown Unknown Fine
I bought this pretty pastel print from a bookstore that went out of business some years ago, but I kept it thinking I would frame it. Seeing that that hasn't happened, however, the time has come ("the Walrus said)to talk of other things. I wish I could tell you who created it, but the artist failed to sign it. All I can see by holding a magnifying glass up to the tiny penciled writing under the image is the title, "A Scottish Evening", which depicts Derwentwater, a beautiful area you can visit online. The entire thing measures 6"x10", but the image which is set into the place designated for it (creates a mat) is 3"x5". The entire piece is crisp and clean with no damage. Perfect for a cozy little spot.

1930 Liberty Magazine Calendar (1973 REPRINT Leslie Thrasher Art)
2 1930 Liberty Magazine Calendar (1973 REPRINT Leslie Thrasher Art)
Coshocton, Ohio Liberty Library Corporation 1973 soft cover Very good
I wish this were the original calendar from 1930, but it's very obvious that it's not given the advertising info on the front for Akron Industrial Metals Co. But it's still very cute and even threw recipients a bone since 1975 and 1930 shared common dates which meant it could actually be used. Fortunately it was not used, or all the pages may have been discarded. Every month shows a bright color image featuring cute kids rendered by Leslie Trhasher and original advertising on the back. The calendar measures 7"x12-1/2" and has a metal hanger at the top. Only fault is a small stain over the "y" in Liberty on the front.

24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
3 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
U.S.A. American Preservation Unknown date Unknown edition Disbound Articles Very Good Condition
I found these disbound articles in a box of Architectual Review Magazines which I bought at auction. I almost tossed them out until I realized how worthy they are. Each of the 24 focuses on a particular area within a state located anywhere in the country. They all derived from American Preservation magazine, so the color photographs are stunning. Each article is pretty long with many images. I wish I had more room to show them. Areas are these: New Orleans Lower Garden District; Providence, Rhode Island; Salem Massachusetts; Eutaw, Alabama's Greek Revival Architecture; Galveston, Texas; Mizner's Eden Palm Beach's Flamboyant Architecture; Brownsville, Texas; Waterford, Virginia; Helena, Montana; Columbus, Georgia; Madison, Indiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Oregon; Mt. Auburn in Cincinnati, Ohio; Manchester area of Pittsburgh; Savannah, Georgia; Powelton Village, Philadelphia; Saratoga Springs, New York; Crested Butte in the Rocky Mts.; Detroit's Woodward East; Oakland cemetery; Galena, Illinois and Bay View, A Summer Resort in Michigan. All are clean and stapled. Will still ship for $2 media in the U.S. as always.

A Happy New Year Bird Series Postcard Large Red Bird in Pine Boughs 1910
4 A Happy New Year Bird Series Postcard Large Red Bird in Pine Boughs 1910
Unknown 1910 Very good
The greeting, A Happy New Year, is hiding in the pine boughts in the lower left hand corner, so is easy to miss. But what a handsome card this is! It's gilded and embossed with a bold image superimposed over a small winter vignette. Lovely! This card was sent to a Mrs. C. Nundahl of Perry, North Dakota. The message reads, "Dear friend, Your card received. Thanks. It is a fine ? you have. Wish I could visit you sometime. Let us send cards once in a while. Best wishes for a Happy New Year. M.A." Card shows a little corner wear at the top, but is otherwise clean and nice.

Aldens Fall and Winter 1951-52 Catalog
5 Aldens Fall and Winter 1951-52 Catalog
Chicago Aldens 1951 Autumn and Winter 1951-52 Soft cover Good condition
I wish the previous owner hadn't used the front cover as a scratch pad to see how much it would cost to buy two items. I wish even more that he or she had tried to erase it, maybe because the answer is wrong! Anyway this is a very nice catalog. I don't know this company and have never seen one of their catalogs, but I very much like the size which is easily handled at 5-1/2" x 9-1/2". The catalog has a whopping 972 pages of fashions for the whole family, toys, jewelry, engagement rings, household items, furniture, guns, shoes, typewriters and much more. This is a complete immersion into material culture at the beginning of the 50's -- 65 years ago. The order blank is still inside and has not been used. Only other fault is creasing to lower corners both front and back, but both have been discretely taped for strength.

Christmas Postcard A Christmas Reverie Santa with Pipe and Smoke 1908
7 Christmas Postcard A Christmas Reverie Santa with Pipe and Smoke 1908
1908 Very good
An ornate design with a shiny gold background and embossing make this one a standout. There is a slight postmark to the front, so the price has been adjusted for same, but it's still a beauty with just a little corner wear! Note the kids in the whirl of smoke from Santa's pipe. There's no indication of origin, but there is a printed notation on the back that says St. Nicholas Series No. 3. The message on the divided back reads "How did you find everybody in Logansport? Am going to Niad (?) this afternoon and wish you could be there too. That candy was just fine. Mary." The card is addressed to Clara McGlorie of Logansport, Indiana and postmarked 1908.

Hotel Del Monte California
9 Hotel Del Monte California
San Francsico Hotel del Monte/ Sunset Printing Early 1900's soft cover
It's a shame the upper front corner is missing from this charming and very early brochure advertising one of the finest resort hotels in the country. Normally I would pass it by because of it, but I didn't because this one is very early (the hotel was built in 1880). There is no stated date, but all it takes is a glimpse of the women guests in their big hats and long skirts and it's easy to place it at the turn of the 20th century. The engravings inside, all in brown tones, are exquisite and the lyrical prose makes you wish for time travel... "From the wide veranda over which riotous roses clamber to make welcome shades of winter sunlight, maidens send forth their Tourney Knights to win favor on the polo field." Brochure measures 5-1/2"x7-1/2" and has 22 pages. VERY Edith Wharton!

Language of Flowers Postcard Series; Violet, Lily, Sweet Pea, three cards)
10 Language of Flowers Postcard Series; Violet, Lily, Sweet Pea, three cards)
Unknown Very good
This is a charming postcard series titled the Language of Flowers. From it we have three cards numbered 555, 556, and 563. None have been postally used. There is no date on any, but two of the three came from the same recipient (we have many of hers) and her dated cards range all from 1906 to 1914. The floweres are identified in the upper right corner along with their meaning in the language of flowers. These include violet,"faithfulness"; lily, "peace"; and sweet pea, "wish you joy." The lily card is addressed in pencil to Sophie Nundahl, Perry North Dakota with this message, "Haven't any more Easter greetings, so will have to send you this one. Clarence." The violet card just has Sophie's name and the words "from 13-3", which may be March, 1913 which makes sense if it, too, was an Easter card. The lily card was addressed to Emmett Olson, Frazer, Minnesota.

Miniature Catholic Prayer Book Czechoslavakia 1908
11 Miniature Catholic Prayer Book Czechoslavakia 1908
Czechoslavakia Unknown 1908 hard cover Very Good
I wish I could provide more information on this pretty little Catholic prayer book published in Czechoslavkia, but I have only the bare bones. It's made of celluloid and decorated at edges of reverse sides of both front and back covers with pretty gold and white dentelles and page edges are gilded on all three sides. Other than the cover art there are no additional images. No names or writing either. Measures 2-1/4"x3-1/2" and has 256 pages.

Neiman-Marcus Christmas Catalog 1985 (25th Anniversary His & Hers Gifts)
12 Neiman-Marcus Christmas Catalog 1985 (25th Anniversary His & Hers Gifts)
Dallas, Texas Neiman-Marcus Store 1985 soft cover Near Fine
The Neiman-Marcus Christmas catalog is legendary. It's to(rich)grown-ups what the Sears & Roebuck Christmas wish book was once to kids. This year's issue is especially interesting because it marks the 25th Anniversary of the infamous His & Hers gifts which began in 1960 with two Beechcraft planes -- one customized to her taste, one to his! The former owner laid-in an article from a 1985 USA Today which recounts every glittering gift year by year. 1985's was two heavyweight diamonds priced at a cool two mil! The catalog is in full color and measures 8-1/2"x12" with 109 pages. There's just a small wear spot to top edge -- otherwise lovely. Especially attractive is the cover design made by artist Ivan Chermayeff, a collage of cut and torn paper.

13 New Testmanet U.S. Army for Richard N. Clark
Philadelphia The John C. Winston Co. 1943 Hard cover Very ood condition Presented by Your Sunday School April 10, 1943
The names on these little New Testaments always makes me hope that the family will find it. Not too long ago I did make a match. It was a a little book of common French phrases for soldiers. He wrote his name, but I couldn't make it out, but the family rcognized his infamous scrawl This little tstament was given to the solider from his Sunay School class. Likely he was teacher. the book is small at 2-3/4" x 4-1/2" and has clean, pages with color art. The outer eges are also inked in an orange color. I wish we knew where he lived, but we don't. If this is of any help, I bought this in Ashland, Ohio.

Objects For Preparing Food (Exhibition Catalog 1973)
14 Objects For Preparing Food (Exhibition Catalog 1973)
Washington, D.C. Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution 1973 soft cover Very Good
Fabulous art catalog celebrating the art of the lowly, as in the utensils and vessels used by cooks. If you know your way around the kitchen, or wish you did, you will love these oversized pages filled with black and white photos of many, many items -- some of which you may not even recognize. The book is huge at 12"x12-1/2" and was published to accompany an exhibit at the Renwick Gallery which ran from Feb. 9, 1973 to April 29, 1973. The New York Museum of Contemporary Crafts also played a role in making it happen.

Photograph Girl in Lacy Dress with Book (Cleveland, Ohio)
15 Photograph Girl in Lacy Dress with Book (Cleveland, Ohio)
Cleveland, Ohio Betz Photography Unknown Very good condition
This photo caught my eye for its odd size and the amazing details on her dress. The image is so clear that you can even see the stitches in the gutter of the book that she's holding. I suspect that this was in a folder from the photographer because there is indication of glue at a line at the top back. It's too bad that it's not there, but this is still a pretty image from the past. The photograph itself measures 4" across and 9-3/4" from top to bottom. The textured cardstock on which it's mounted brings the size to 5-1/2" x 12-1/2". I wish we knew she was ...

Photograph WWI Doughboy Wearing Campaign Hat (circa 1911)
17 Photograph WWI Doughboy Wearing Campaign Hat (circa 1911)
Unknown No Photographer stated Circa 1911 Card folder Fine condition
I love a box of photographs, especially when they're hidden inside a folder. You never know what awaits. Most of the time it's a disappointment, but once in a while you find a good one. I very much like this one for a couple reasons -- one, we can see details of his uniform and his campaign hat which resembles that of a mountie, and two, we're reminded of the legions of young men who fought in WWI. The photo is sepia toned and out of its folder measures 4-1/4" x 6-1/4". Sadly, there is no information on the reverse side. The closed folder measures 5-1/4" x 7-1/2" and is clean and well cared for. I wish I could find his family, but it's unlikely with nothing to go on but the image itself.

Real Photo Postcard Boy Dressed as Railroad Conductor Taking Man's Ticket, Pittsburg, PA
18 Real Photo Postcard Boy Dressed as Railroad Conductor Taking Man's Ticket, Pittsburg, PA
Pittsburgh, PA AZO/Arcade Studios 1926-1940's Fine
This is a fun real photo postcard showing a man pretending to be a train passenger and a young boy dressed up like a conductor to take his ticket. Maybe a grandfather and grandson on an afternoon in Pittsburgh having some fun. I wish we could date it exactly, but it was never sent and has no writing on it at all. The only clue is the markings on the stamp box which indicates by the four squares in the corners that it's from 1926 to the 1940's. Big span, but a great image!

Real Photo Postcard Taylor Inn Lodi, Ohio 1910
19 Real Photo Postcard Taylor Inn Lodi, Ohio 1910
New York The Rotograph Company 1910 Good-plus
I have had many Taylor Inn cards over the years, but never this one. Not only is it a real photo (and is even marked as such), but it also shows a woman walking on the street trailing a fancy dress in her wake -- which is rather surprising given that Lodi was a small agrcultural town. The two appendages in the front to the right of the awning that says DRUGS (which I don't recall seeing before either) are two awninged bays fitted with masses of flowers in boxes. The card is postmarked Sept, 24, 1910 and was sent to Mrs. B. Kennedy of Summit Street, Akron, Ohio. The message reads, "Another chicken dinner. Wish you were here too. Lottie. 9/24/10." Card will arrive in a plastic sleeve.
