1 "There's A Reason"; A Journey Through the Factories That Make Postum, Grape Nuts and Post Toasties (post-1914)
Battle Creek, Michigan Postum Cereal Company After 1914 Hard Cover Good-plus No Dustjacket as issued
This is an amazing little book published after the death of C.W. Post, the founder of the Postum Cereal Company which produced Grape Nuts and Post Toasties as well as the coffee substitute, Postum. From 1905 until his death in 1914 C.W. sued, was sued, and gained a reputation as a charlatan who worked overtime making bogus health claims against caffeine. He also came up with what was called a mysterious slogan for his breakfast beverage "There's a reason ...", thus the title of the book. Great pictures abound in here -- the ones at the front in color show such things at Post's private office. Most photos, however, are of the plant and people at work making the products with help from mighty machinery. Book measures 7-1/2" x 9" and has 47 pages. It's tightly bound with clean pages and no writing. Faults are exterior -- a few little stains and a few tiny spots of edge wear to the green border around the cover picture. Overall quite good. It's puffery of course, but fun puffery!

2 "This Is the Draped Dress" Matted Best & Co. Ad Woman's Home Companion 1922
Woman's Home Companion Magazine 1922 Very Good
I am not usually attracted to most of the matted and/or framed advertising available, but this one caught my eye. The monotone art is not only elegant, but evocative of the Jazz Age -- the world of Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald and the artistic women of the Left Bank. As indicated on the reverse side, the image comes from the Picture Section of Woman's Home Companion magazine July, 1922. Both it and its mat are very clean. The art is the creation of John La Gatta (1894-1977), an illustrator best remembered for his work featuring women. The overall size with mat is 12"x13" while the image itself is 9"x9-3/4"

Advertising Blotters Woodall Stenographic Office, Woodall Letter Service (1920's)
3 Advertising Blotters Woodall Stenographic Office, Woodall Letter Service (1920's)
St. Paul, Minnesota Brown & Bigelow 1921, 1929 Very good condition
Here we have six unused ink blotters advertising under two names. The Woodall Stenographic Office blotters were all printed in 1921. At that time they advertised stenographic work, mimeographing and multigraphing. The other two advertised Woodall Letter Service and both of those were printed in 1929. They maintained the same services, but added some new ones too --mimeoscoping and printing. All blotters measures 3"x6". I'm not sure where this company was from, but it retained the same phone number which began with a Wabash prefix followed by four numbers.

Oberlin, Ohio Oberlin College 1992 XLVI, I Card cover Very good condition 8-1/2 Howling Wolf
This bulletin is especially nice due to a single topic filled with illustrations and much information. The artist, Howling Wolf, is introduced with an autobiography of a Plains Warrior Artist. The article is lengthy and has many small pictures and full page plates in both color and black and white. The first time Oberlin College saw this artists work was in 1904 when Helen Finney Cox brought an album of 57 drawings rendered by Howling Wolf.

Baker Lake Prints 1988 (Canadian Indigenous Art)
10 Baker Lake Prints 1988 (Canadian Indigenous Art)
Baker Lake, Ottawa, Canada Canadian Arctic Producers 1988 0920234879 / 9780920234877 Card cover Very good condition
This is an interesting booklet about Canadian indigenous art from the Baker Lake area of Ottawa. It began with the Sanavik co-operative which endeavored to create a print program. Unfortunately it didn't catch fire right away, so instead of producing huge numbers of art prints they decided to choose carefully and confine each to a limited edition of no more than 50 copies. The booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 39 pristine pages. The only fault is some light sunning to spine. There are real photographs of the area and its people, both black and white aand color art, and photos of the artists at work.

Calman Shemi Art Catalog (1993)
12 Calman Shemi Art Catalog (1993)
Jerusalem Studio Calman Shemi Interior Arts 1993 First edition Card cover Fine
Bright and beautiful are the first two adjectives which come to mind to describe this beautiful art catalog presented by an artist from Jerusalem. A letter from his gallery is laid-in explaining the catalog and what he was currently working on -- laser cut metal sculptures painted in the vibrant colors for which he is noted. These are NOT in the catalog, however. Catalog consists of approximately 33 pages with work on one side and explanations on reverse. Photo of artist on reverse of front cover.

Change the Date Novelty Congratulations Postcard 1908
13 Change the Date Novelty Congratulations Postcard 1908
Unknown 1909 Very good
This is a truly unique postcard, as there are two operating wheels which allow you to change both the month and the day. Both work very well, but you have to grasp the slim edges with your nails to do it. Quite a novelty and very pretty in pastel. The card was mailed with no message to Bertha Randall of 310 W/. Smith Road, Medina, Ohio -- right here when I am! Only fault is an erasure at front of green mailbox where name of sender had been.

Vence, France No publisher stated 1996 Card cover Fine condition
Not long ago I saw a documentary about the beautiful windows designed by Matisse for the chapel of a nunnery in France. So when I saw this booklet about it I had to have it. Matisse considered this project his master work and indeed it is. The booklet is gorgeous, printed on quality coated paper with bright, beautiful photography accompanied by description. It measures 7-1/4" x 10" and is as new. I doubt it was ever read. Would make a lovely gift.

Charm: The Magazine for Women Who Work August, 1952
15 Charm: The Magazine for Women Who Work August, 1952
Street & Smith Publications 1952 August 1952 soft cover Good-plus
Charm is not a magazine you see too much, probably because there were fewer women in the workplace in 1952. I wasn't really too surprised that work played a small role in the magazine's content other than the clothes one wore to the office. But -- wow! -- what sophisticated clothes these were. I always think of poodle skirts and Donna Reed shirtwaists when I think of the 50's, but not for these women. High fashion! The other topics include the predictable -- child care and what to fix for dinner. But if you're a fashion junkie, this one is fabulous! Clean and tightly bound with a few creases to cover. Pages pristine.

Cleveland Institute of Art Catalog 1983-1985
17 Cleveland Institute of Art Catalog 1983-1985
Cleveland, Ohio Clevelanf Institute of Art 1983 soft cover Very good
A very handsome catalog sent to would-be students. Of course it has all the information needed to determine what courses and majors are offered, classes to be taken etc., as well as the glitzy parade of color photos of student work which is most impressive. The really good part though is the full page black and white photographs of students plying their various arts. Each is full page and and most inviting. Catalog measures 8-1/2"x10-3/4" and has 88 pages, plus laid-in unused application. Clean and nice inside and out with just a few spots of isolated edge wear to front cover.

Cleveland Women's Groups: An Amazing Story (1996)
18 Cleveland Women's Groups: An Amazing Story (1996)
Clevelnd, Ohio Women Celebrating the Bicentennial (A legacy project) 1995 0961326522 / 9780961326524 Special Commemorative Edition Card cover Fine condition
This book didn't derive from the American Bicentennial, but rather from Cleveland women of 1896 and 1996. In 1896 men took over the city's 100th birthday, so when the century turned from 19th to 20th Cleveland women opened a time capsule which included a letter from Catherine Avery (Mrs. Elroy M. Avery) which asked Cleveland women what they had done to improve the city. At the time of writing she spoke of its good attributes, but also of dirty water, polluted air, homelessness and and poverty. Cleveland women had done much in that century past and pulled all of their work together to create this book which includes 149 pages of women's organizations replete with information on each. Booklet is clean with no names or writing, no spine crease or any other defect. It measures 7" x 8-1/4".

Collier's Magazine: The Nation's Weekly August 19, 1933 (George Creel, Railroad Troubles, Kathleen Norris, Babe Herman)
19 Collier's Magazine: The Nation's Weekly August 19, 1933 (George Creel, Railroad Troubles, Kathleen Norris, Babe Herman)
New York P.F. Collier & Son 1933 soft cover Robert O. Reid
Striking cover art by Robert O. Reid sets the scene for August, 1933. Reid's work was frequently on the cover -- and it's no wonder why. This magazine is handsomely illustrated throughout with a nice mix of articles and fiction. The fiction writers include George Agnew Chamberlain, Stephen Morehouse Avery, Ruth Chandler Moore, Roark Bradford, and Kathleen Norris. Two articles that stoood out was one by George Creel, who was an investigative journalist and politiican who served on the U.S. Committee of Public Information, which was actually a propaganda organization started by Woodrow Wilson. In his article he addresses the problems of the railroad industry in the 30's. The other article focuses on Babe Herman, the eccentric Chicago Cubs player. Magazine is oversized at 10-1/2"x13-1/3" and is quite nice with just a few tiny edge tears. Original mailing label at bottom front cover. The recipient was from Barberton, Ohio.
