2 "Seated at the organ I was weary and ill at ease" The Lost Chord Vintage Postcard
New York The Knapp Company Unknown Near fine
This is the prettiest card I've seen using a line from F. Earl Christy's poem "The Lost Chord." Most of them are in black and white with a rather disheveled background, though more of the verse. This shows only the first line -- clearly it's part of a series -- which reads "Seated one day at the organ I was weary and ill at ease ..." The small center graphic is lovely and makes for an understated, elegant card. It has not been postally used and there is no writing. It's numberd 381.

3 "There's A Reason"; A Journey Through the Factories That Make Postum, Grape Nuts and Post Toasties (post-1914)
Battle Creek, Michigan Postum Cereal Company After 1914 Hard Cover Good-plus No Dustjacket as issued
This is an amazing little book published after the death of C.W. Post, the founder of the Postum Cereal Company which produced Grape Nuts and Post Toasties as well as the coffee substitute, Postum. From 1905 until his death in 1914 C.W. sued, was sued, and gained a reputation as a charlatan who worked overtime making bogus health claims against caffeine. He also came up with what was called a mysterious slogan for his breakfast beverage "There's a reason ...", thus the title of the book. Great pictures abound in here -- the ones at the front in color show such things at Post's private office. Most photos, however, are of the plant and people at work making the products with help from mighty machinery. Book measures 7-1/2" x 9" and has 47 pages. It's tightly bound with clean pages and no writing. Faults are exterior -- a few little stains and a few tiny spots of edge wear to the green border around the cover picture. Overall quite good. It's puffery of course, but fun puffery!

15 Postcards Views of Monticello
4 15 Postcards Views of Monticello
Virginia Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Inc. Unknown Near Fine
Beautiful glossy set of 15 postcards, each showing a different aspect of Monticello, the exquisite Charlottesville, Virginia home of President Thomas Jefferson. The cards are slightly oversized at 4" high and 6-1/4" across. None have been used. All are nicely kept with sharp corners. Only fault is light toning around the edges of the reverse sides. Views include Jefferson's bedroom, Jefferson's study, the library, the entrance hall, the tea room, the dining room and tea room in a single picture, the wine cellar, the parlor, the entrance hall looking westward, the west front exterior, a different view of the west front exterior, the kitchen, the south plaza conservatory, a view of the exterior with the fish pond, and the ding room by itself.

1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
5 1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
Unknown Location Johnson and Ward circa 1863 later printing
The 1862 map of the territories of Washington and Oregon is a lovely thing with its hand coloring and handsome double face font for lettering. If you look in the lower corner you see the number 57 which indicates it was the 57th plate in Alvin J. Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas published originally by Johnson and Browning in 1862. The question is when was this particular one printed? It states on the map that the publisher was Johnston and Ward which means it's around 1863, as that's the year the company's name changed from Johnson and Browning to Johnson and Ward. The map was made at the start of the Civil War with much land especially in eastern Oregon not settled, but you can also pick out sites such as Mt. Ranier and Fremont's Peak among others, plus you can see the route proposal for the Pacific Railroad. The map measures roughly 13" x 17". It's a guess though because it's been professionally double matted snd that's all I can see of it. Only faults are a dark spot to upper right corner and a small surface mar to mat at about 3-1/2" down from the top left. There is a small tear to the mat and a thin indentation next to it on the map itself, but the paper is not torn. The map including matting mesures 18" x 22". Will ship for $2 in U.S.

1930 Liberty Magazine Calendar (1973 REPRINT Leslie Thrasher Art)
6 1930 Liberty Magazine Calendar (1973 REPRINT Leslie Thrasher Art)
Coshocton, Ohio Liberty Library Corporation 1973 soft cover Very good
I wish this were the original calendar from 1930, but it's very obvious that it's not given the advertising info on the front for Akron Industrial Metals Co. But it's still very cute and even threw recipients a bone since 1975 and 1930 shared common dates which meant it could actually be used. Fortunately it was not used, or all the pages may have been discarded. Every month shows a bright color image featuring cute kids rendered by Leslie Trhasher and original advertising on the back. The calendar measures 7"x12-1/2" and has a metal hanger at the top. Only fault is a small stain over the "y" in Liberty on the front.

1945 British Calendar Glamis Castle former Home of the Queen
7 1945 British Calendar Glamis Castle former Home of the Queen
Dundee J.B. White 1945 Very good
What a charming item this is -- a calendar comprised of two pieces -- the large one which is a print of Glamis Castle of Dundee, former home of the Queen Mum, mounted on cardboard with a paper mat and measuring an ample 6-1/2" x8". The image is in full-color, as is the cameo portrait of the Her Majesty in the upper right corner. The ribbon at the top is for hanging. Suspended, also with the same ribbon, is a small calendar with all pages intact. This measures 3"x4". The calendar was given as a gift as per inscription at back which reads "Glamis Castle is only 5 miles from Longacre. Wishing you all the best for 1945." It's signed on the gift sticker provided by the printing company "Betty."

1952 Yearbook; Central High School, Omaha, Nebraska (The OBook)
8 1952 Yearbook; Central High School, Omaha, Nebraska (The OBook)
Omaha, Nebraska Central High School 1952 Hard cover Very good condition 8-1/4
I don't buy many yearbooks, but this one is special. I have never seen so many signatures from the classes of Central High School in Omaha. All of the good wishes were written for Toby. Toby was a girl -- a popular girl -- and yet I couldn't find her full name. It could be that Toby was a nickname. At any rate, this is an amazingly fun book. I almost passed it by, but I'm glad I didn't. I did the math -- okay, my husband did the math -- but now we know that if she was 18 in 1952 she would be in her early 80's. I think this one is a keeper for the right person -- a family treasure!

1964 Official Program 12th Annual Cumberland Sports Car Races
9 1964 Official Program 12th Annual Cumberland Sports Car Races
U.S.A. Steel Cities Region Sports Car Club of America Inc. 1964 soft cover Very good condition
Very nice program for the races held at the Cumberland Municipal Airport May, 15, 16, 17, 1964. The event included the national championship and regional races. Previous owner penciled in notes for some races which could be easily removed, but you may not want to, as it shows who won etc. Program measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 20 pages including a blank one for notes which is unused. Includes auto related advertising. Faults are these: a tear to bottom of spine which I repaired with non-browning archival tape on both sides and a small stain to one page.

1972 Cadillac Owner's Manual in Original Plastic Case (With Emissions Booklet)
10 1972 Cadillac Owner's Manual in Original Plastic Case (With Emissions Booklet)
Detroit. Michigan Cadillac Motors 1972 soft cover Good 1
If you're restoring an old car there's nothing like the original manual to tuck into the glove compartment. Here we have not only the manual, but also the accompanying booklet about the car's emission control systems and their required maintenance and warranty information. Both measure 5" tall by 8" long and fit into their original blue plastic holder. The owner's manual shows some rubbing to blue cover and a small stain to side of text block which can be seen on the very edge of some pages inside. The emissions book is quite good with a light ring stain from a glass at back. Overall, both are still quite respectable. Manual has 84 pages and is illustrated with black and white photos, charts, and drawings. The emissions booklet has 15 pages and is illustrated with drawings.

11 1976 Bicentennial Cotillion Ball of Czechs and Slovaks Program (Cleveland, Ohio)
Cleveland, Ohio Czech and Slovak Cotillion Ball Committee 1976 card cover Very Good condition
Very nice booklet for an event which took place at the Sheraton Cleveland Hotel, Saturday, February 21, 1976. The booklet measures 5-1/2" tall and 8" wide with 68 clean tightly bound pages. The program lists a social hour, followed by dinner, a performance by "Jump", a Modern Dance Club from Chicago, and then dancing for everyone to Paul Burton's Orchestra. There are also photos and bios of the debutantes of which there were eight, plus photos of members of the Chicago Modern Dance Club. 1978 Calendar Dance Magazine Quotes the Greats (School of Cleveland Ballet)
12 1978 Calendar Dance Magazine Quotes the Greats (School of Cleveland Ballet)
New York City Dance Magazine 1977 soft cover Fine Condition
This was an annual calendar designed and published by Dance Magazine for distribution to entities such as the School of Cleveland Ballet which could have their name printed on the final page for their own advertising. I have seen these before, but always missing at least one page. This one has all 12 and all are pristine. Each month shows a photo of a famous dancer along with a quote from each. The 1978 calendar aimed the spotlight on Alexandra Danilova, Natalia Makorova, Peter Martins, Edward Vilella, Vaslav Nijinsky, Louis Peres, Cynthia Gregory, Margot Fonteyn, Erik Bruhn, Martha Graham, Mikail Baryshnikov, and Anna Pavlova. Measures 4" x 8-3.4"

24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
13 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
U.S.A. American Preservation Unknown date Unknown edition Disbound Articles Very Good Condition
I found these disbound articles in a box of Architectual Review Magazines which I bought at auction. I almost tossed them out until I realized how worthy they are. Each of the 24 focuses on a particular area within a state located anywhere in the country. They all derived from American Preservation magazine, so the color photographs are stunning. Each article is pretty long with many images. I wish I had more room to show them. Areas are these: New Orleans Lower Garden District; Providence, Rhode Island; Salem Massachusetts; Eutaw, Alabama's Greek Revival Architecture; Galveston, Texas; Mizner's Eden Palm Beach's Flamboyant Architecture; Brownsville, Texas; Waterford, Virginia; Helena, Montana; Columbus, Georgia; Madison, Indiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Oregon; Mt. Auburn in Cincinnati, Ohio; Manchester area of Pittsburgh; Savannah, Georgia; Powelton Village, Philadelphia; Saratoga Springs, New York; Crested Butte in the Rocky Mts.; Detroit's Woodward East; Oakland cemetery; Galena, Illinois and Bay View, A Summer Resort in Michigan. All are clean and stapled. Will still ship for $2 media in the U.S. as always.

25 Asian Prints in Folder 1978 (All Portraits, Nine in Color)
14 25 Asian Prints in Folder 1978 (All Portraits, Nine in Color)
Asia Unknown 1978 Card folder Very Good
I have had these prints for years, but never listed them because the title is in Asian characters. I can't recall where I even got them, but they are quite handsome. There are supposed to be 16 black and white numbered prints, all portraits drawn with pencil, inside the folder and all are present. But here's the nice surprise -- nine other numbered prints in full color appear to have hitchhiked along. These apparently were at least a set of 10, but one is missing. Nine nice freebies aren't bad though! :-) The folder measures 7-1/2"x10-1/2" and is very clean, though toned. A previous owner also taped a short tear at top of spine. The prints are very white -- no foxing or toning. Paper is lightweight and one print shows a small rough area to top edge, but could still be framed with no problem. Overall an interesting set.

25th Independence Day Dance North American Association of Venezuela 1966 (program)
15 25th Independence Day Dance North American Association of Venezuela 1966 (program)
The North American Association of Venezuela 1966 soft cover Good
Surprisingly scarce program published in honor of the 25th Independence Day Dance hosted by the North American Association of Venezuela. Clearly, this was a big event, as the ads in the program are largely national -- Chrysler has the back cover and Helena Rubenstein cosmetics has the flip side. Others inside include Ponds, Sears, Chevrolet, Elizabeth Arden and many more. The program is large at 9"x12" and has much information about the event itself, the liberation of Venezuela, and the ties that bind Venezuela to the United States. Illustrated with black and white photographs. The program is clean and tightly bound, but does show light foxing to outer edge of front cover and also at first two pages. Otherwise very nice. Slight tobacco scent.

30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
16 30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
New Orlean, LA G.F. Castleden 1924-1929 Fine in Very Good Envelopes
These are a lovely find if you are enchanted by the architecture of New Orleans. I've never seen this many in one place ever, but I got them from the estate of a Castleden collector. Castleden was a British artist who emigrated to New Orleans and continued his career as an artist there. The cards were aimed at the tourist trade -- ten scenes for a quarter. Three of the original envelopes will accompany them, but the cards weren't in them, so I am uncertain which belong where. The scenes are Old World beautiful and include, but are not confined to, these subjects: Pirate Alley, the monastery of the Capuchian monks, the staircase of the old St. Louis Hotel, the courtyard of the old Spanish Arsenal, oyster schooners, the Spanish Gate of Cabildo, the Courtyard of the Little Theatre, and the Little Green Shutter Tea Room. None have been used and all are in excellent condition. The envelopes are a little worn, but not bad. The photo shows an array of cards, but not all -- there really are thirty!

17 A Brilliant History Jewels at Sotheby's (1978)
London Sotheby's 1978 Card cover Fine condition
This is an unusual catalog for an auction, even by Sotheby's many handsome examples. This one features a famous person on each page -- the Duchess of Windsor, Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, Edna Winston, Elton John, Countess Mona Bismarck, the Count and Countess du Boisrouvray, Ava Gardner, Helene Beaumont, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and Marlene Dietrich. The jewels are top drawer from the most revered jewelers in the world and each is beautifully described. Catalog is printed on glossy paper throughout. The back paper which appears to be obstructing the photos, are just narrow strips with info on both sides. Catalog is clean and gorgeous with no names or writing. It measures 9" x 10-1/2". Very special. (Advertising)
