Showmen's Trade Review April 30, 1955 (Daddy Long Legs)
21 Showmen's Trade Review April 30, 1955 (Daddy Long Legs)
New York Charles E. "Chick" Lewis 1955 Vol. 62, No. 19 soft cover Very good
Very nice, clean trade magazine targeted at movie theater owners. All the ads and short articles are full of info on the state of the movie experience halfway through the 1950s. The big movie of this issue was definitely Daddy Long Legs, which starred Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron based the novel by Jean Webster who wrote it in 1912. The magazine measures 9" by slightly over 12". The ads of course are for adding comfort and modernity to the movie theater. Coca Cola ad on the back cover encourages its sale in the lobby.

22 Stage The Magazine of After-Dark Entertainment February, 1937 (Dinner Theaters. Liquor Laws. Clark Gable and Myrna Loy)
New York Stage Publishing company Inc. 1937 Vol. 14, No. 5 soft cover Very Good
Very nice, tightly bound magazine with no label. Small bit of discoloring at spine and lower edge which is not too visible. Overall clean and bright. Among the Valentine faces on the cover are Gary Cooper, Noel Coward, Donald Duck, Fred Astaire, Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin and many more. There's also a very nice ad for Seagram's inside (see photo). And also a nice photo of Katherine Hepburn as Jane Eyre which accompanies an article about theatre as an escape mechanism. Other topics include theatre restaurants (dinner theatres); liquor laws and how restaurants obey, or sort of obey them; Clark Gable and Myrna Loy in the Irish history movie Parnell; and the music of Wagner. Magazine is quite large at 10" x 13-1/2", but will ship in the U.S. for $2. OVERSEAS ORDERS WELCOME, but please inquire with destination for an exact shipping quote.

23 Stage; The Magazine of After Dark Entertainment December, 1937 (FDR Lampoon, Snow White & 7 Dwarfs Movie)
New York City Stage Publishing Company 1937 soft cover Very Good
Beautifully clean, sophisticated magzine which addresses all of the performing arts and other night time pleasures in the city. The ads are wonderful -- many, if not most, are for high end items. There's always a lot to read in these and this one is no exception. The big stories are a play called I'd Rather Be Right which was a lampoon about President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, an essay about being a foot soldier in the battle of prohibition; and the new Disney Studio's movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This issue also offers ideas for Christmas presents, plus drink recipes that had been forgotten. Magazine measures 10"x14" and has 123 pages. Only detractions are a small bit of edge wear. Very clean and tightly bound.

Calendar is part of the Star Wars Return of the Jedi merchandise. Closed it measures 9" x 11-1/4". Colorful throughout.

The Art Bulletin June 2006 (Andy Warhol's Silver Elvises)
25 The Art Bulletin June 2006 (Andy Warhol's Silver Elvises)
New York College Art Association 2006 Vol. LXXXVIII. No. 2 soft cover Very Good
Very handsome high quality magazine printed on coated paper. Many articles, but I bought it for the one about Andy Warhol and his Silver Elvises. The article is a very long one at 17 pages measuring 9"x11" and illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. The author, David McCarthy, titled the article "Andy Warhol's Silver Elvises; Meaning Though Context at the Ferus Gallery in 1963." Wonderful not only for Elvis and Andy fans, but those who like the movies of the period. Other articles include ancient art, 17th century art, Louis Kahn, and Judaic Threads in West African tapestries. Practically a book! Magazine is clean and tightly bound with no names or writing and no labels. Only faults are a little edge wear to bottom of back cover and two flat creases at two outer back corners.

Thoroughly Modern Millie Movie Souvenir 1967 (Julie Andrews, Carol Channing)
26 Thoroughly Modern Millie Movie Souvenir 1967 (Julie Andrews, Carol Channing)
California Universal City Studios Inc. 1967 soft cover Fine 1
Not only were Carol Channing and Julie Andrews in this oldie, but so was Mary Tyler Moore. The program is beautiful -- very clean and well preserved by a collector from whom I got several more. The bright color photographs capture the 20's feel, as does the info on the storyline and the decade itself. Measures 8-1/2"x11"

Trent Movie Theatre New Rochelle, 1936
27 Trent Movie Theatre New Rochelle, 1936
New Rochelle, New York Trent Theatre 1936 Nov. 4-5; Nov. 6,7,8; Nov. 9-10 Leaklet soft cover Near fine condition
These little leaflets are hard to find because they're easily tossed away after the movies have been enjoyed. The leaflet is printed on an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet folded in the middle, so there are a week's entertainment. The first one is Marlene Dietrich And Charles Boyer in the Garden of Allah and The 39 Steps with Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. Open it up and Bette Davis and Claude Rains take over "Mr. Skeffinton" and "Lady Bodyguard" with Eddie Albert and Anne Shirley. Next to those are "A Girl, A Guy and A Gob" with George Murphy, Lucille Bal, l and Edmond O'Brien and "Wildcat" starring Richard Arlen and Atline Judge. The back ad is for "Brenda Starr Reporter" with Joan Woodbury, and Kane Richmonds. This apears to be sa erial movie, as the leaflet says "Don't Miss a Chapter every Friday and Saturday." There's also a comment on seeing Brenda every Friday and Saturday. The ads are clean and nice with just one very small tear which I have mended with archival tape.

Broadway Bill (Little Big Book 1935), Hallinger, Mark
37 Hallinger, Mark Broadway Bill (Little Big Book 1935)
Akron, Ohio Saalfield Publishing 1935 first edition hard cover Very Good condition
I grew up in Akron, Ohio where this book was published. So many of our books when we were kids came from Saalfield. The company had lots of ties to Hollywood which is why this one is typical. They also published LOTS of Shirley Temple books, apper folls etc. . This book was tied to the Columbia film of the same name starring Warner Baxter, Myrna Loy, Helen Vinson and Walter Connolly. The book is illustrated throughout with black and white stills from the movie. It's a small book measuring just 4-3/4" wide and 5-1/4" tall and part of Saalfield's Little Big Books. Book is tightly bound with no names or writing and clean pages which have toned -- almost of the Big Little Bigs toned due to the acidic paper used. There's little exterior wear, but nothing really egregious. Overall it's a nice little collectible.

Louisville, Kentucky Fawcett Publications 1939 Vol. XXI, No. 9 soft cover Very Good Condition
This is a fun issue with articles about Merle Oberon and David Niven, Mickey Rooney saying he's NOT girl crazy, bad boy Bogart, and how Vivien Leigh landed the role of a lifetime -- Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. There's also a great article titled Hollywood Strikes Back at Hitler which covers the formation of the Committee of 56, headed by Melvyn Douglas and devoted to letting Hitler and the American people know that members were unforgiving of Hitler's anti-Semetic atrocities. Members included stars, producers, directors and writers. Among them were Rosalind Russell, Myrna Loy, Lucille Ball, Groucho Marx, Bette Davis, Dick Powell and Don Ameche. Magazine is crisp and clean with no label. It measures 8-3/4" x 11" and has 82 pages. Only fault is a very small stain to outer side edge which gets lighter and lighter as the pages flip by. Cute full color ad with the Dionne quints for Karo Syrup.
