The Army Air Forces Presents Irving Berlin's All Soldier Musical Show
22 Berlin, Irving The Army Air Forces Presents Irving Berlin's All Soldier Musical Show "This Is the Army" with Personal Appearance of Irving Berlin (1942-43)
No location stated United States Army Special Service Division circa 1942-43 soft cover Good condition
There must have been many of these programs, but it's a bare bones publication with no pictures or art. And yet it tells a great story. Irving Berlin staged the entire show "This is The Army" which had a cast consisting of all soldier actors. It was a musical replete with an orchestra, vaudeville, original songs, and a ladies chorus. It opened on Broadway in the summer of 1942 for a four week run which turned into twelve weeks Eleanor Roosevelt liked it so much she saw it more than once. After that the show hit the "road" for Europe, the Far East, and the Pacific theatre of war. The last show was in February, 1943. There are lots of names here, so if you have an ancestor who might have been in it let me know and I'll look it up. the program measures 6-3/4" x 8" and has six pages.

The Negro and the War Pamphlet No. 71 1942), Brown, Earl; Leighton, George R.
23 Brown, Earl; Leighton, George R. The Negro and the War Pamphlet No. 71 1942)
New York, New York Public Affairs Committee Inc. 1942 Second printing December, 1942 soft cover Very good
Clean, tightly bound booklet which measures 5-1/2"x7-1/2" and has 32 pages illustrated with graphs. First printing was in August 1942, and this one, the second, in December, 1942. The booklet begins with a provocative story about how the Japanese in January, 1942 aired a story from Sikeston, Missouri about a young African American man named Cleo Wright who was seized by a mob and burned to death. The story was not random -- the Japanese had a reason for it. The booklet examines that, as well as life for the African American in wartime America, both in and out of the military.

MacArthur The Real Story (1951), Burns, Martin
24 Burns, Martin MacArthur The Real Story (1951)
New York Universal Publishing 1951 soft cover Good-plus
Given the acidity of the paper used to print this booklet it is in very good condition save browning to pages. Every copy of this I've ever seen has had the same outcome. This one is clean and tightly bound, however, with no names or writing. Though a bit sensational in tone, it's an interesting read which covers the drama in Washington, America's verdict, whether or not MacArthur deliberately sought dismissal, the women in his life, his role as Caesar of the East, and speculation on what comes next. It also provides info on why he was dismissed, the effects of it on war and peace, behind the scenes maneuvering, and the march on Washington. Many black and white photographs.

Poems of Patriotism (1942 WWII Edgar Guest), Guest, Edgar A.
31 Guest, Edgar A. Poems of Patriotism (1942 WWII Edgar Guest)
Chicago Rand McNally 1942 Rand McNally Edition Hard cover
This little book was no doubt very popular during WWII. It first appeared in a longer version published by Reilly & Lee and then here with a small format and 49 selected poems. In some ways it's the quintessential gift book -- small in size at 4"x5-1/4" with enough pages (96) to be significant, but not unwieldy, and poems which tap into what everyone was thinking and feeling about America and WWII. Edgar Guest was not a literary poet, but a popular one for very good reason. He understood people.

New York Harcourt Brace & co. 1940 Fourth printing Hard cover Book is in Very Good condition Jacket Good condition
Very nice, clean hard cover booklet which measures 5-1/4" x 8-1/4" and has just 41 pages. Though few, those pages were considered very controversial at the time of writing and remain so today. The Lindburghs believed in staying out of foreign wars, a stance critics called isolationist propaganda. It's a very interesting book no matter which side you agree with it's with sprinkled at times with soaring prose and even bits of poetry. Booklet is tightly bound with no names or writing and very clean pages. Jacket shows wear to spine, but looks very nice in a mylar cover and has not been price-clipped.
