Historic Old Fort Niagara; The Story of an Ancient Gateway to the West (with map and four brochures) 1939, Hultzen, Claud H.
203 Hultzen, Claud H. Historic Old Fort Niagara; The Story of an Ancient Gateway to the West (with map and four brochures) 1939
New York Old Fort Niagara Association 1939 soft cover Near fine
I'm a big believer in keeping extras found in books or booklets with the item that harbored them, especially when they're all about the same, or in this instance, similar, topics. So this offering comes replete with four other travel brochures from the period. One is about Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada; another visitor's guide to Fort George; the French Castle of Old Fort Niagara, and the visitor's guide to Old Fort Niagara. The main booklet is marvelous at 6"x9" with 63 pristine pages illustrated with drawings and a crisp, clean, as new folded map tucked in its own pocket at the back. Check out the second photo -- it's very attractive.

206 Huxley, George Why Did the Byzantine Empire Not Fall to the Arabs? 1994
Athens, Greece American School of classical Studies at Athens 1994 Reprint from 1986 Card cover Very good condition
I bought this booklet and three others from a young woman who studied in Greece. Tthis one is the largest at 8-1/2" x 9-1/2" and has 14 dense pages. The text is from a lecture by George Huxley who was the Director of the Gennadius Library in the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. It's very clean and nice with just three tiny, light freckles of foxing to the front cover, otherwise it's pristine.

Foot Prints; Incidents In Early History of New Brunswick 1783-1883, J.W. Lawrence
207 J.W. Lawrence Foot Prints; Incidents In Early History of New Brunswick 1783-1883
St. John, New Brunswick, Canada J. & A. McMillan 1993 Hard cover Very Good No dust jacket as designed
Very nice books. Bright blue boards are quite clean with bright gilt at face and just a small bit of wear to corners and crown and tail of spine. Endpapers are likewise clean with no cracking to hinges. Pages have toned only faintly and book is nicely fitted with a clear rigid-plastic cover. Measures 7"x 8-1/2" and has 108 pages, plus back matter. The author was president of the New Brunswick Historical Society at the time of writing, shortly before the province's centennial celebration, and was considered the utmost authority on its history. He begins with the arrival of the Loyalists who departed New York after the American Revolution and proceeds forward, the text nicely accompanied by drawings of important people and sites. There is also a map at the front. Especially interesting to anyone pursuing geneaology are the lists in the back of the book of land grantees in both Parr Town and Carleton in 1783. 119 pages.

209 James Ford Rhodes High School South Brooklyn: A Brief History of that Part of the City of Cleveland Which Lies South of Big Creek and West of the Cuyahoga River (1946)
Cleveland, Ohio James Ford Rhodes High School 1948 Card cover Very good condition
This history of South Brooklyn, Ohio is not often seen. In twenty years I have only had two. This second one is quite clean and nice with no names or writing and no creasing to pages or cover. The only fault is a few tiny tears to the yapped edges which I will iron flat and repair with small pieces of archival tape on the back. The book measures 6" x 9" and has 109 pages printed on very nice paper. Augmenting the text are black and white photographs and maps. The text itself is two parts -- Part I, Introduction to the Western Reserve, Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, and Brooklyn. Part II Early History -- Brighton Village, Incorporation as South Brookyln, Annexation by Cleveland and Development of Modern Community Life.

Book's aim is to document the descendants of Captain Oliver Pond whose helmet, or as it was called, his cap, was passed down the generations until it found a lasting home. C0mmon Courtesy In Which Miss Manners Solves the Problem That Baffled Mr. Jefferson, Judith Martin
214 Judith Martin C0mmon Courtesy In Which Miss Manners Solves the Problem That Baffled Mr. Jefferson
New York Atheneum 1985 0689116527 / 9780689116520 First edition Card cover Very Good condition
This small booklet measures 4-1/2" x 7" and has 70 pages. It's clean and with no names or writing and no defects of note. The drawing at the front of the booklet was originally in the New Yorker in 1971. Reading Miss Manners as she takes on the historic ills of American society is fun. All is not serious, though much is, but it's always said with a little sugar too. Here's an example, "Miss Manners has long held the belief that champagne is a major civilizing influence, not to mention an invaluable in softening up those who resist acknowledging the importance of etiquette as an academic discipline."
