The Church Magazine of Eccleshall June, 1957 (England)
42 The Church Magazine of Eccleshall June, 1957 (England)
Eccleshall, Staffordshire England Trinity Church 1957 soft cover Good
This is a lovely magazine from Trinity Church, which was built in 1180 with additions built in the 13th and 15th centuries. Someone likely visited on vacation in the summer of 1957 and tucked it away in a suitcase. The local ads are charming and there is information about church events, pictures of the church, a page for women (about housekeeping)and rosters of names which might be of interest to those from the area. The clergy consisted of Rev. S. Tetley and Rev. R.J. Foster. Magazine is clean and tightly stapled, but does show thinning of the paper at the lower corners of the cover. It measures 8"x9-3/4" and has 18 counted pages/

The English-Speaking Union Dartmouth House London 1926 Brochure
43 The English-Speaking Union Dartmouth House London 1926 Brochure
London The English-Speaking Union 1926 soft cover
Booklet has its faults, but is not commonly seen and is tightly bound and complete. The English-Speaking Union began in London in 1918, thanks to the efforts of journalist, Sir Evelyn Wrench. The goal, as stated on the top front banner of the brochure is "To draw together in the bond of comradeship the English-speaking peoples of the world." The organization continues today, both in the U.S. and Britain as an educational charity. In 1918 there were 774 members, but by the time this brochure came out there were 11,974. Headquarters were the Dartmouth House at 37 Charles Street, Berkely Square, London and very beautifully appointed inside and out. The drawings inside show the luxury -- the library, dining rooms, even bedrooms with private baths. The brochure measures 7"x10" and is printed on a lovely, heavy paper. There are 20 pages including 14 black and white photographs and a map inside the front cover. Faults include a light crease down the center from having been folded, though I was able to flatten it in the book press. There is also soiling to the cover, a few stains to outer edge at front, some yellowing to back, and a few small tears on bottom edge of cover.

The George Eliot Calendar 1920
44 The George Eliot Calendar 1920
New York George Sully & Company 1920 soft cover
I've had lots of calendars, but never one like this. It came to me tied at the top with a beige ribbon that literally fell apart from age when I attempted to tie it more securely. Insted I retied it Japanese style with a piece of cording, though wished I had either blue, or beige instead of white. It's easy to do though, so if you want to change it again you can. The calendar pages show the dates in week intervals at the bottom of the pages and topped by huge quotes from George Eliot's novels including Daniel Deronda, Middlemarch (of course), Adam Bede and Silas Marner. Calendar measures 6"x9" and is almost half an inch thick.

The Magic of London Including Outer London and the Surrey Hills (1930 Travel)
45 The Magic of London Including Outer London and the Surrey Hills (1930 Travel)
New York City Southern Railway 1930 soft cover Good
The Home Guards of Whitehall make for a pretty picture on the cover of this 1930 travel booklet. There are a few small tears to the yapped edges (as almost always happens), but I have secured them on reverse side with nonbrowning almost invisible archival tape. There is also a tiny snip missing from the lower front corner. The booklet measures 5-1/4"x 8-1/2" and is clean inside and out with a crip fold-out map at back. Black and white photographs printed on glossy paper are informative and attractive to the traveler whether there via train or armchair.

The Royal Academy of Dancing Gala Matinee of Ballet 1958 (Margot Fonteyn)
46 The Royal Academy of Dancing Gala Matinee of Ballet 1958 (Margot Fonteyn)
London The Royal Acedemy of Dancing 1958 card cover Good condition
Large program bound with quality golden cording. It measures 9" x 12" and is clean and bright inside. The cover is a bit toned around the edges and there are indications of nibbling to upper corners. I repaired them with archival tape which smooths it out and keeps the tiny chads from the abrasions to keep from tearing. Archival tape is non-browning and almost invisible. Inside there are full page photos of the Queen Mother, The Princess Margaret and others. But the focus is on the ballet and its dancers -- Alicia Markova, Yvette Chauvire, Youly Algaroff, Henning Kronstam, Kirsten Simone, Lucette Aldous, Norman Morrice, John Gilpin, Mona Inglesby, Anita Landa, Margot Fonteyn, and Michael Somes. 34 counted pages. The Woolpack Hotel, Warwick, England (early 1900's)
49 The Woolpack Hotel, Warwick, England (early 1900's)
Warwick, england The Woolpack Hotel circa early 1900's soft cover Very good
This is very small travel booklet about an historic hotel which is no longer in service. The booklet measures 4' tall and 5" wide with a very simple khaki colored cover. There is no date inside, but an ad at back indicates that cars could be rented -- see photo of the ad, as it dates the booklet to the early part of the 20th century. Ephemera from this hotel seems hard to find, but here we have a little gem. There are photographs throughout and information on amenities such as a bath in the room, a fire for the evening, keeping a dog, and various types of meals. The hotel provided breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner snd cold supper.

Two Sepia Postcards Castleton Speedwell Mine (1920 England))
50 Two Sepia Postcards Castleton Speedwell Mine (1920 England))
England F. Frith & co. Ltd. 1920 Very good
There's a ghostly quality to these two sepia postcards shot in the Speedwell Mine at Castleton (England), one at the Subterranean Canal and the other at "Halfway House." Both show people underground. Neither was used postally, but a cryptic remark on the back of each indicates that the cards were purchased as souvenirs -- "Visited 26th July 1920." Except for a few tiny spots of edge wear, these are quite clean and crisp. Each will arrive in its own plastic sleeve.

Venice Scene Watercolor Print by Frank Brangwyn (1920's)
51 Venice Scene Watercolor Print by Frank Brangwyn (1920's)
England Unknown 1920's
Beautiful watercolor print showing the crowd enjoying a sunny day in Venice, Italy. I purchased it from a longtime dealer who saved plates from damaged books. I had a hard time figuring out who the artist was though because he only printed the name on one print! But the style is so unique it was easy to see that the others were British artist, Frank Brangwyn's, work too. The print is tipped-in on the paper rather than being printed on it and measures in its entirety 9-1/2"x11-1/2". The image size is 6-3/4"x9". Plate is clean on both sides save one little spot on the back and ready to frame. Very pretty!

Venice Simplon Orient-Express and The British Pullman Train Day Excursions (1984)
52 Venice Simplon Orient-Express and The British Pullman Train Day Excursions (1984)
England Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express Inc. 1984 card cover
The largest book is pretty common, but this one came replete with two extra goodies inside -- a smaller booklet about the Orient Express British Pullman Train Day Excursions and a 1984 Programme of Events with booking form still attached and without writing. Everything is pristine and both the big booklet (8-1/2" x 11") and the little one (5-3/4" x 8") are lavishly made with quality coasted paper and full color photographs. At the time these were pertinent the Orient Express had been revived only two years earlier.

Revudeville at the Windmill (1959 Theatre Program), A. Van Damm (producer)
53 A. Van Damm (producer) Revudeville at the Windmill (1959 Theatre Program)
London The Windmill Theatre 1959 35th edition soft cover Good-plus
There's no printed date on this risqué booklet issued by the Windmill Theatre of London, but a previous owner penciled 1959 in the white box at top of cover. The booklet measures 5-1/2"x8" and has 50 pages counted by me. There are numerous photographs of the various dances and songs featuring scantily dressed women, plus full page colors photos of nudes. There's also considerable text about the history of the theater. Program is clean and tightly bound with a flat crease along length of outer edge of back cover and small spots of wear to top and bottom of spine.

Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen (Small book, 1985), Austen, Jane
55 Austen, Jane Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen (Small book, 1985)
New York Avenel Books 1985 0517606097 / 9780517606094 Hard cover Very good condition Very good jacket
I love gift books and this little one is especially charming. It measures just 4" across and 6-1/4" tall with 376 pages. The dust jacket shows no tears or chips and there are no names no writing inside. As small as it is there's still a wonderful introduction about Jane Austen and her book followed by the novel in its entirety. Do you remember the first line? "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." And there begins the story of Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy.
