The Spur Magazine April, 1939 (Howard Chandler Christy, hunting, riding, polo, rowing), Christy, Howard Chandler
63 Christy, Howard Chandler The Spur Magazine April, 1939 (Howard Chandler Christy, hunting, riding, polo, rowing)
New York The Spur Publishing Company 1939 Volume 63, No. 4 soft cover Very Good condition
1939 was the last year YRhe Spur looked just like it did back in the 20's. As you can perhaps read under the title it was billed as "A Magazine of the Good Things in Life." All through the Great Depression issue after issue appeared with high end entertainment, travel, homes etc.. This issue is devoted to outdoor sport -- riding horses on the trails in Tennessee, hunting stag in England, polo, Sport in France, and rowing in the Pirogue Race on Bayou Barcelavia on the Lower Mississippi River. There's also an article by Howard Chandler Christy, the artist known for the Gibson Girl. Here he shows some of his portraits of real people and tells their stories. Among them is author, Mary Roberts Rinehart. Magazine is clean and nice with no label. It's oversized at 10" x 14" and has 66 pages. I repaired a small area to top of spine with almost invisible archival tape. Otherwise very nice.

Journals of Dorothy Wordsworth (1958), Darbishire, Helen (editor)
65 Darbishire, Helen (editor) Journals of Dorothy Wordsworth (1958)
London Oxford University 1958 First edition thus Hard Cover Very Good condition Good condition
What a charming little book this is. A handsome gift book comprised of two journals kept by Dorothy Wordsworth who was the sister of the poet Wordsworth and his friend the poet Coleridge. The Alfoxden Journal was kept in 1798 while the Grasmere Journals spanned 1800-1803. Dorothy Wordsworth was a writer herself, so the journal is most pleasant to read. She speaks of everyday things and the beauty of the English countryside -- a very soothing book to pick up at the end of a stressful day. The charm of it also its size. Though not technically a miniature book, it still measures a diminutive 4"x 6" and has 264 pages which also includes her brother's shorter poems. It will arrive in a mylar cover to protect the dustjacket. The only fault is sunning to the spine. There is also a previous owner's name and the date written small on the front free endpaper for which I will provide a bookplate which the buyer can use,or not at, discretion.

Ken Magazine Second Issue April 21, 1938, De Kraif, Paul (editor) et al
67 De Kraif, Paul (editor) et al Ken Magazine Second Issue April 21, 1938
Chicago Ken Inc. 1938 Volume I, No. 2 soft cover Very good condition
Very handsome copy of the second issueof Ken magazine. I also have the first one and it's on here at this writing. Ernest Hemingway hds been demoted from editorship to contributor which I suspect he could not care less about. His article in this issue is titled, "Dying Well or Badly". The whole issue is pretty much focused on the dangerous atmosphere in Europe. Other articles include: What Price English Justice; The Secret Fuse Under Mexico; Fascism's New World Thrust; Mussolini vs. His Past; Inside the Queerest Shipwreck; Norway, The Next Belgium; and Bidding the Theatre Guild Goodbye. The latter was due to no new hits, one hit in which the Guild had only half ownership; and four flops. Magzine is clean and nice with a little scratching to upper front corner. It measures 10-1/2" x 13-1.2" and has 106 pages.

T.S. Eliot, Little Gidding (1st Edition, 1942), Eliot,T.S.
68 Eliot,T.S. T.S. Eliot, Little Gidding (1st Edition, 1942)
London Faber & Faber 1942 First Edition soft cover Very good
What a lovely thing to discover the final book of T. S. Eliot's quartet of poetry chapbooks which was issued in 1942. It's a stated first edition, but you can also tell by the stitched binding. The second issue was stapled. Little Gidding had been delayed for over a year due to the air-raids on Great Britain during World War II and the poet's declining health. The title refers to a small Anglican community in Huntingdonshire, established by Nicholas Ferrar in the 17th century. Very different from Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats! Measures 6" x 9" and has 16 pages. Original New York City bookseller's "ticket" at bottom edge inside back cover. Book is pristine inside and out, but does show some sunning to edges. A collectible treasure.

The Tempest Theater Souvenir (Vera Zorina, Canada Lee, Arnold Moss, Hull, Elizabeth
78 Hull, Elizabeth The Tempest Theater Souvenir (Vera Zorina, Canada Lee, Arnold Moss
New York Ellison B. Greenstone Unknown Date soft cover Good-plus
Handsome souvenir for the performance of Shakespeare's The Tempest produced by Margaret Webster. It's not a program, but an informative booklet about the play itself, its characters, and the actors and actresses who took on the roles. The inside is printed in blue ink of which tiny little dots of it landed here and there. It had also been folded in half vertically, the bane of most theater programs and souvenirs, but it's lying flat again thanks to the book press. There is also a light dampstain to lower corner at open side of cover, but it's not too visible. The booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 14 pages.
