Saengerfest Program June 22-24,1927 Cleveland Public Auditorium (HUGE German-American Musical Event German and English text)
61 Saengerfest Program June 22-24,1927 Cleveland Public Auditorium (HUGE German-American Musical Event German and English text)
Cleveland, Ohio 1927 soft cover Good-plus
This is a hefty, significant program -- more book than booklet! But the event was so enormous it's worthy of the paper used to print it. Saengerfest was a national song festival which consisted of five concerts held over three days to accommodate the HUGE crowds. Twenty-six trains were charted just to bring in the thousands of PARTICIPANTS. The Cleveland schools also contributed singers. The event was also a commemoration of the centenary of the death of Beethoven. The program measures 7-3/4" x 10-1/4" and is very tightly bound with complete spine strip. Onlt fault is light some soiling to cover front and back. It has been cleaned by me, but it proved impervious. Pages are pristine. The text is in both GERMAN AND ENGLISH and is illustrated with photographs. Pages are not numbered but the program measures almost a half inch thick. 64 Stage The Magazine of After Dark Entertainment November, 1936 (George Kaufman, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin)
New York Stage Publishing Company 1936 soft cover Very good Condition
Very nice entertainment magazine devoted to nighttime pleasures including dining and dancing, but especially theatre. It's oversized at 10"x14" and has 116 pages. Lots to read, but I think the main story is Men At Work, a lengthy look at musical greats George Kaufman, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. Another fun p0iece is about going to Russia to make the rounds of the Russian theaters. Also of interest are the story of the musical White Horse Inn,T he Alchemy of Music, and the New York Angle on World Wide Fashion. The John Davidson Book (1967)
68 The John Davidson Book (1967)
Phoenix, Arizona M.J. Enterprises 1967 Card cover Very good condition
I am amazed that I recognized John Davidson on the cover of this booklet, but somehow I did. I don't think I've seen him since the 70's. But he is still very much an entertainer appearing in musical theater and on television. The booklet is filled with photographs of him in various roles and performances, plus as a child and teen, though of course the book derives from 1967, very early in his career. Photos are in both black and white and color. The bold signature you see in the photo in printed on the page -- not hand-signed. Booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" with 20 pages containing biographical material.

The Musical News: A Monthly Journal Devoted to Bands, Orchestras and Music In General (May 1892)
71 The Musical News: A Monthly Journal Devoted to Bands, Orchestras and Music In General (May 1892)
Reading, Pennsylvania No Authors or Editor Named 1892 Vol.II, No. 6 soft cover Good condition
This was a small independent publication, issues of which are very hard to find. I've had it a long time, but it just surfaced today in one of my storage closets. There are short articles about arranging a programme; the death of Francesco Lamperti, the Italian singer; ease in violin playing; and others. But I do think the ads are what steal the show! Magazine is clean and tightly bound, but does show some toning to the back cover (see photo) and a flat vertical crease, likely from having been in a mailbox. I have ironed it flat and put it in the bookpress. Magazine measures 7" x 10" and has 18 pages. The only ad that isn't musical is the one at the bottom of the front cover for the Neversink Mountain Hotel in Reading, Pennsylvania, "a magnificent new resort just compete.'

72 The Playbill For the Imperial Theatre Annie Get Your Gun (Ethel Merman, 1948)
New York Playbill Incorporated 1948 Week beginning Oc. 18, 1948 soft cover Very good condition
Very nice program, clean and tightly bound. The margins are mildly toned and there's an odd whiteness over the cover image which almost looks like rain or water from a hose. This was the premier Playbill and the star on the cover is a young Ethel Merman in the role of Annie Oakley. The music and lyrics were provided by Irving Berlin. Program measures 6-1/2" x 9" and has 40 pages.

The Royal Academy of Dancing Gala Matinee of Ballet 1958 (Margot Fonteyn)
75 The Royal Academy of Dancing Gala Matinee of Ballet 1958 (Margot Fonteyn)
London The Royal Acedemy of Dancing 1958 card cover Good condition
Large program bound with quality golden cording. It measures 9" x 12" and is clean and bright inside. The cover is a bit toned around the edges and there are indications of nibbling to upper corners. I repaired them with archival tape which smooths it out and keeps the tiny chads from the abrasions to keep from tearing. Archival tape is non-browning and almost invisible. Inside there are full page photos of the Queen Mother, The Princess Margaret and others. But the focus is on the ballet and its dancers -- Alicia Markova, Yvette Chauvire, Youly Algaroff, Henning Kronstam, Kirsten Simone, Lucette Aldous, Norman Morrice, John Gilpin, Mona Inglesby, Anita Landa, Margot Fonteyn, and Michael Somes. 34 counted pages. Third Street Music Settlement Booklet, New York City 1949-1950 Season
78 Third Street Music Settlement Booklet, New York City 1949-1950 Season
New York, New York Third Street Music Settlement 1949 soft cover Good
Very nice booklet measuring 6"x8-3/4". Plain tan wraps printed in black ink at face. Only fault is small spot at top front. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Third Street Music School Settlement, the nation's oldest community music school, was founded in 1894 by Emilie Wagner to provide pleasure and instruction to impoverished immigrants of New York's Lower East Side. It continues today. Here we have a booklet explaining the program and its offerings for the 1949-50 school year for both adults and children. In addition to instrument lessons, there were voice, opera, rhythmic dancing and children's music appreciation courses. Inside the back cover and continuing over to the back itself are time slots with penciled names and the age of each child, ranging from three to nine. Could be erased, but they are an interesting adjunct to the text. 16 pages.

Thoroughly Modern Millie Movie Souvenir 1967 (Julie Andrews, Carol Channing)
79 Thoroughly Modern Millie Movie Souvenir 1967 (Julie Andrews, Carol Channing)
California Universal City Studios Inc. 1967 soft cover Fine 1
Not only were Carol Channing and Julie Andrews in this oldie, but so was Mary Tyler Moore. The program is beautiful -- very clean and well preserved by a collector from whom I got several more. The bright color photographs capture the 20's feel, as does the info on the storyline and the decade itself. Measures 8-1/2"x11"

Tricolor Magazine July, 1944 (Harry Bellamann, Alicia Markova)
80 Tricolor Magazine July, 1944 (Harry Bellamann, Alicia Markova)
New York Andre Labarthe 1944 Volume I Number 4 soft cover Very good
This is only the fourth issue of this war-time magazine dedicated to France and French culture, but not without a bit about the U.S. too. There's a subscripton form bound in on the first page which allowed readers to become Charter members by having their subscription begin with the April issue instead of the current one. The magazine is in very good condition (only some foxing to first two pages because of the form)and measures 7"x9-1/2". One of the two things that jumped out at me was Harry Bellamann's "Will Paris Be the Same?" Bellamann was an American novelist, best known for his book, King's Row, which turned into a movie which showcased Ronald Reagan in his best early career performance. The second story to catch my eye was Alicia Markova, an English ballerina and choreographer. Other topics include G.I. Joe Goes to France, The Getapo Hell of Compiegne and much more. The magazine 125 pages.
