Asian Americans AndTtheir Communities of Cleveland, Stephen Fugita, David Namkoong, Domingo Patawaran; Suey Yee
61 Stephen Fugita, David Namkoong, Domingo Patawaran; Suey Yee Asian Americans AndTtheir Communities of Cleveland
Clevelend, Ohio Celveland Ethnic Heritag Studies Cleveland State University 1977 Second printing Card cover Fine condition
This is one of many ethnic heritage monographs based on a single culture. They have never been easy to find, though I once had six all at once. They sold over time, but I just last year got two more, both of which were replacements from ones I had before. This one is very clean and tightly bound, measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 201 pages. This isn't a booklet, but it was helpful to ask writers from these new nationalities to talk about their lives and ethnicity. As Cleveland began to grow with many Asian immigrants -- Japan, China, Korea, Filipino and Vietnamese -- the books discussed culture, memories (wa and internment camps) food, religion, family life, immigrants through the decades and more.

Lippincott's Magazine March 1881 (The Diamond Mines of South Africa & Fanny Stevenson), Stevenson,Fanny
62 Stevenson,Fanny Lippincott's Magazine March 1881 (The Diamond Mines of South Africa & Fanny Stevenson)
Philadelphia J.B. Lippincott & Co. 1881 New Series Vol. 1 No. 3 soft cover Good
What an interesting issue this is -- two stories caught my eye immediately. The first is the lead, a 15 page article about the diamond mines of South Africa replete with seven illustrations. The second thing is a seemingly small piece entitled My China Boys which was written by Fanny Stevenson, wife of Robert Louis Stevenson. In it she discusses her endeavors to hire Chinese household help. Do check out the ad on the left hand side of the second picture. You'll KNOW which one! :-) Magazine is tightly bound with clean pages and relative little wear to paper cover. Minor soiling, a small tear to bottom of spine, and a tiny area of spine reglued.

The Principle of Happiness (Buddhism 1973), Tajima, Hideo
63 Tajima, Hideo The Principle of Happiness (Buddhism 1973)
Tokyo, Japan Self-Published 1973 first edition soft cover Very good condition
Booklet is clean, tightly bound and simple in its design. Inside the front cover is a presentation slip with the compliments of the author explaining that the booklet is comprised of essays on life and religion for those seeking an authentic way of life. It also offers "insight into the Buddhistic way of life which will awaken the reader to real happiness." Booklet measures 6" x 8-1/4" and has 104 pages. Only faults are some sunning to edges of cover, specifically to the upper back, and toning from the presentation slip to the title page. I will sequester it in a cello bag to keep it from toning further.

Collecting Modern Japanese Prints Then & Now (Foreword by James Michener, 1994), Tolman, Mary and Norman
64 Tolman, Mary and Norman Collecting Modern Japanese Prints Then & Now (Foreword by James Michener, 1994)
Rutland, Vermont Charles E. Tuttle Co. First printing stated 080481936X / 9780804819367 1994 Hard cover Very good condition Very good dustjacket
Crisp, beautiful book, attractive inside and out. Book itself is very clean with two small creases to upper corners which lie flat and still retain sharp points. Dustjacket is likewise clean and nice, though it does have a bit of wrinkling to bottom edge of back of jacket and some and some wear top top front edge, but looks very handsome in brand new mylar cover. Lavish illustration on high quality glossy paper -- one full page per image, most in color. Book is divided into two sections, the first of which explains how the authors, with little money, managed to piece together the Tolman Collection and become the largest publisher of Japanese prints. The second offers the aspiring collector tips on building a valuable collection. One hundred prints in all with commentary. Foreword by James Michener. 247 pages. SHIPS in the U.S. for $2 media mail.

66 Williams, Marjorie In the Nature of Materials; Japanese Decorative Arts
Cleveland, Ohio Cleveland Museum of Art 1977 soft cover Very Good
Though simply made, the one stand-out characteristic that enticed me to buy this booklet is the inclusion of beautiful pages made from textural Japanese paper used to divide sections. As you can see, it's spiral bound with a plastic comb and illustrated with black and white photographs. Covers ceramics, lacquer, metal, paintings and prints and wood. Measures 8-1/2"x11" and has 39 pages. Includes list of artists and a bibliography.

Folk Crafts In Japan 1958 (Related ephemera Laid-in), Yanagi, Soetsu
67 Yanagi, Soetsu Folk Crafts In Japan 1958 (Related ephemera Laid-in)
Japan Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai 1958 Hard cover Very good
Japanese art items call me from afar, so I was delgihted to find this handsome booklet in hard cover format. The pages are clean as a whistle, as is the cover which shows some sunning to both the spine and to the upper back corner. What's especially nice is the fact that extra goodies are hiding inside. There's a tourist leaflet about the Tokyo Museum of Folk-Crafts, plus a booklet from 1962, also published in Tokyo entitled Art Around Town with an article in English about Raku pottery. The main book is illustrated with black and white photos and one color plate for a total of 19 images. It, too, is in English.
