Pittsburgh, PA Allegheny County Bureau of Cultural Programs 1981 Card cover Very good condition

Richardson is considered the apex of Pittsburgh architecture. Richardson designed it in 1883 and it was completed after his death in 1988. Booklet is very nice with one superficial small crease ro lower front corner. Otherwise pristine.

2 Change the Date Novelty Congratulations Postcard 1908
Unknown 1909 Very good
This is a truly unique postcard, as there are two operating wheels which allow you to change both the month and the day. Both work very well, but you have to grasp the slim edges with your nails to do it. Quite a novelty and very pretty in pastel. The card was mailed with no message to Bertha Randall of 310 W/. Smith Road, Medina, Ohio -- right here when I am! Only fault is an erasure at front of green mailbox where name of sender had been.

3 Postcards: Monte Carlo, Le Casino; Monto Carlo Les Terrasses du Casino -- Unused Circa 1920's
Nice, France Photography Editeur d'Art Unknown Date. Circfa 1920's Very good Condition
A lovely pair of postcards show the Casino in Monaco from two views. The edifice straight on is so beautiful with the enormous trees standing tall. The second vision is one of people enjoying the view of the town below from the chairs by the lanterns, reading the newspaper, and walking along the wide avenue. Neither card has been used. Both cards are also clean and attractive with a perforated left edge on both cards. There is no date, unfortunately, but I think it's circa 1920's. I looked through a magnifying glass at the woman walking toward the camera. Her clothes are pure 20's.Card will arrive in brand new plastic sleeves.

5 Embossed German Thanksgiving Postcard -- Turkey & Flowers
Germany 1916 Very Good
German postcards of the early 19th century are a thing of beauty, many such as this one, show heavily embossed and colorful designs. This Thanksgiving card is beautifully preserved -- the paper is even crisp -- and will arrive in a plastic sleeve. It was not postally used, but as you can see, it does have a penciled message which reads, "Nov, 29, 1916, Dear Friend, Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving Day, Yours, "A". It was addressed to Miss Sophie Nundahl, Rutland, North Dakota.

6 Eight Coffee Trade Cards (Lion, Arbuckle, Gold Medal, Dilworth's)
Good
Here we have eight trade cards, none dated, but likely turn-of-the-century. Three are from Lion, two from Arbuckle's,two from Gold Medal and the smallest one from Dilworth's. None have been pasted into an album, though the backs of all have toned from cuddling up too close to other high acidic paper items. There's a small margin stain to one, darkening to upper corner of one and toning to lower corner of another. Overall they are quite still nice. The lagest measures 3-1/4"x5-1/4" and the smallest(from Dilworth's) a petite 2-1/2"x3"

7 Postcard "The First Jury" Akron, Ohio Court House (1909)
Akron, Ohio Long & Taylor Comopany 1909 Good
Depicted in this photo is the second court house in Akron, Ohio. It was completed in 1908 and there on the steps are the first jury in the new building. The card is postmarked January 25, 1909 and was sent to Edna Stocksdale of Dundee, Ohio. The message appears to have been partially erased and is virtually unreadable. Card also shows some smudges at back, but the main problem is a horizontal crease to entire card. The good news is it's in no danger of snapping off and is not hugely noticeable. This is an uncoomin card and I have placed it in a plastic sleeve.

9 The Theosophical Quarterly Vol. XXXV (Full run) 1937-38
New York The Theosophical Society 1937-38 soft cover Very Good to Good
The Theosophical Quarterly Volume XXXV, Nos. 137,138,139,140; Published in 1937-38. Full set in good, clean condition with only one issue showing a fault which is a small bit of chipping to upper front corner of the cover just above the No. 140 on one issue. All magazines have clean pages made from very nice rag paper with no writing and no creases. The Theosophical Society was founded by Madame Helena Blavatsky, the first Russian woman to be naturalized as an American citizen. She began the group in 1875 with other like-minded friends and eventually moved to India where she started yet another branch. By the 1930's the society was going strong, despite some splintering after Madame Blavatsky's death in 1891. In fact, it was even popular in Ireland. Devotees of James Joyce's novel, Finnegan's Wake, will recognize Theosophical Society influences in the book. Among the topics here are cyclic laws in biology, prayer wheels, the importance of having a life purpose, psychic and noetic action, and a two-part series on Blavatsky herself. Not often seen in a full run.

10 Attica High School Commencement Program 1886 (Attica, Ohio)
Attica, Ohio Attica High School 1886 Card Very good
Very handsome little program with die-cut edges proudly commemorating the 7th Annual Commencement Program (1886) of Attica High School in Attica, Ohio (Seneca County). Very handsome design printed on cardboard folded in the center with printing on all four sides. The superintendent of the school (who was also a teacher) was R.B. Drake and the evening's address was given by Professor Chas. H. Churchill of Oberlin College. There were only seven graduates --Lilla Elane Howen, Millie Agnes Brant, James Huckingham, Clare Bel Cooper, Nellie Alice Groves, Samuel Ellsworth Leonard and Ida Luella Sanford. The program measures 3-1/4" across and 4-1/2" tall. Only fault is two tiny brown spots to outer edge at front. Otherwise beautiful. Here's an interesting fact -- research shows that 800 people were on hand that night for just seven graduates.

11 Your Doctor And You; Brief Dramatic Stories of the March of Medicine Parke Davis Advertising
Detroit, Michigan Parke Davis Soft Cover Very Good
An oversized bound collection of Parke Davis medical ads from the late 1920s. There is no date, but the title page says, "Recent advertisements in a series which has been appearing in national magazines since 1928." It measures 11-1/4"x14-3/4" and is very clean with no names or writing. The ads are pristine. The outer cover was designed with an overhang which, as usual, created small edge tears. Most are not a problem, but a few snaggy one were repaired on the reverse side by me with tiny pieces of archival tape. There are 15 ads in all, each with a message such as the danger of children playing with firecrackers, the hidden danger of diphtheria (two ads), mothers dying in childbirth etc.

12 Lion Brand Milk Premium Catalog The Magic Door
Brooklyn, New York Nestle's Milk Products soft cover Good
Scarce premium booklet for Lion Brand Condensed and Evaporated Milks. There is curiously no date on this, but it appears to be from the 1920's. Research shows that the premium program was in effect as early as 1915 and was suspended in May of 1943 and all premium stores were closed due to war shortages. The book measures 4" across by 10" tall and has 26 pages of gifts to choose from including toys, household goods, jewelry, sports equipment etc. But the most interesting part is of interest to those who collect Girl Scout and Boys Scout ephemera. The book shows a page each for this with multiple pictured items. Book is clean and tightly bound, but the plain back cover shows a small stain at the bottom edge and a bit of flat wrinkling.

13 Oglebay Park Bulletin and Two Activities Guides 1934
Wheeling, West Virginia Oglebay 1934 soft cover Good
Oglebay Park in Wheeling, West Virginia remains in operation and is still known for its over-the-top Christmas light display. But here we have a trio of items from 1934 when Oglebay was a baby. The newsletter has an unfortunate stain in the lower front corner which, oddly, is not on the reverse, but otherwise is clean and without further difficulty. The two guides -- A Handbook of Nature Study Activities at Oglebay Park and The 1934 Guide to the Activities of Oglebay Institute at Oglebay Park are pristine except for a few rust line to back spine from staples on the nature one. The Institute publication is a four sided brochure, but the other opens to show a crisp beautiful map. The newsletter is a four-sided affair too, but is large at 9"x12". Altogether the three pieces offer a unique look at the early days.

14 Gourmet Magazine (2 issues, March & May, 1962)
New York Gourmet Inc. 1962 soft cover Very Good
I bought these from a cookbook collector who kept them clean and beautiful for many decades. Gourmet was definitely a top tier publication for those interested in creative dining. It's interesting to see how even gourmet food has changed while some classics live on. Among the writers is Lucius Beebe. I remember selling Beebe's railroad titles back when I first became a bookseller and was amazed to find that he's also Lucius Beebe the foodie. Both magazines have great color ads and articles covering pre-summer suppers(you have to SEE the picture with this one to believe it!), dandelion wine,a woman's fond recollection of her grandmother's African American cook, the literary history of the potato, Thai food, eggs, blue trout and more. I have quite a few of these from 1963 and a couple from 1964, so if you're looking for one hit the contact button and I;ll see if I have it. Eventually they'll all be on here.

16 The Chronicle of the Early American Industries Association 1957 (Full Run, Four Issues)
Williamsburg, Virginia Early American Industries Association 1957 soft cover Very good
Though slim, these attractive, quality printed magazines pack in a lot of information and photographs in 12-48 pages (they start small and increase through the year). This is a full set for 1957, Volume X, Nos. 1-2-3-4. The topics are myriad, but the emphasis is on Early American products and processes. Amongst the features here are the Corning Glass Center, tools of early American glass blowers; making simple tools such as the Indian broom, the rake, and the twibill (now there's a new/old one!); Old Salem; fruit lifters; bookbinding tools; early home coffee roasters; the Old Slater Mill, and a beekeeping exhibit at Shelburn Museum in Vermont.

17 Catholic Funeral Memorial Book Unused in Original Box
Independence Funeral Home Vodargka Funeral Home No date Hard cover Fine condition in Very Good Box
Very pretty cover and two more paintings inside. The book has not been used and is very nice in its original white box. The book is without defect and the box nearly so. There are a couple small white spots on the white background which I almost missed. Otherwise it's a clean, sturdy box. The book measures 7-1/2" x 10" and is clean and bright inside and out. The binding is that of a ring binder that we used to take to school. The book has spaces for name, date and place of birth, age, and date of death. There's also room for photos, funeral notes, the names of officiants, music, the rituals at the cemetery, plus a page for a list of family and friends, floral offerings, comments from the bereaved, life memories, obituaries and more. VERY nice.

19 Postcard Sincere Wishes Fountain, Flowers, Pretty Girl
1913
This card is so pretty and one I have never seen before. The dress is low-cut, but there is a demure quality to this pretty girl as she leans against the fountain and trails a branch in the water. The front says simply "Sincere Wishes." Very nice condition, perhaps because it never went through the mail. Will arrive in protective plastic sleeve. The divided back shows that it was given to Sophie on May 1 -- May Day! -- 1911 "with best wishes from your friend." One wonders ...

22 Leather Postcard Easter Greeting
1907 Leather Good
Leather postcards were quite the fad in the early 19th century. What appears to be stitching around the edges of this one is not -- it's faux stitching. Many leather cards tend to be humorous, but here we have a nice Easter greeting with a pretty girl on an egg. There is no message -- just the address to Miss Josephine Hickey of Scio, Ohio. Note small stain over the H which caused the ink to run. Otherwise very nice.

24 Coast to Coast Fashion Awards By the E.F. MacDonald Company
Dayton, Ohio E.F. MacDonald Company 1962 soft cover Very Good
This oversized catalogue is a monument to 60's clothing for men, women and children. It's clean as a whistle inside and out and measures 12" square. The photography is much more interesting than usual, as in addition to the regular shots of models, there are many large full color plates of vignettes where people are modeling the clothes against colorful backgrounds. Initially I thought this was a retail outlet, but it is not. E.F. MacDonald was an incentive company associated most commonly with Plaid Stamps. This catalog, however, makes no reference to stamps. Each item bears a number, but there are no prices and no stamp requirements stated. It seems likely that there must have been a correlating sheet laid-in with info telling how many books of stamps were needed. Unpaginated, but I counted 31.

26 McCall Kaumagraph Transfer Pattern No. 1308 Design for Braiding (Embroidery)
Unknown McCall Unknown Very Good
Though called a design for braiding, this is actually an embroidery transfer. There is no date on it, but I got it with a lot of other sewing items which were dated in the 1920's, so it's likely this comes from the same era. What's interesting about is that the design came in either yellow or blue ink. This one's a yellow, so if for some reason the buyer changed her mind about it she could remove it from wool or silk by rubbing with benzene, gasoline or carbona! The design is transferred with an iron and full instructions are on the back. Even unused it'a cool novelty for a sewing collection.

27 The American University of Beirut Directory of Alumni 1870-1957
Beirut, Lebanon Alumni Association soft cover Very good
This is not something that would turn up too often, but I bought it from the estate of an American professor who taught there for some time in the 50's. It's very clean with just some light toning around the edges of the cover, front and back, with complete toning to spine from sun. It's tightly bound and measures 7"x9-3/4" and has 161 pages. What's excellent about it is the wide range of dates -- 1870 to 1957-- which means its helpful to a lot of people, especially those who are looking for someone without knowing exactly what years they were there. Nice genealogical item.

28 Movie Life Year Book No. 12 1951 Judy Garland Elizabeth Taylor
New York Ideal Publishing 1951 soft cover Good-plus
If you love old movies these vintage Year Books are great fun. This issue has 1000 pictures, hundreds of which are candids. This issue contains Jane Powell, Scott Brady, Esther Williams, Alan Ladd, Judy Garland, Mona Freeman, Elizabeth Taylor and Barbara Hale. There are also stories about who got married, who made their film debut and stars around the globe. As always, the paper has toned due to high acididty, but the magazine is clean and tightly bound. 33 "A Scottish Evening" Derwentwater Print
Unknown Unknown Fine
I bought this pretty pastel print from a bookstore that went out of business some years ago, but I kept it thinking I would frame it. Seeing that that hasn't happened, however, the time has come ("the Walrus said)to talk of other things. I wish I could tell you who created it, but the artist failed to sign it. All I can see by holding a magnifying glass up to the tiny penciled writing under the image is the title, "A Scottish Evening", which depicts Derwentwater, a beautiful area you can visit online. The entire thing measures 6"x10", but the image which is set into the place designated for it (creates a mat) is 3"x5". The entire piece is crisp and clean with no damage. Perfect for a cozy little spot.

34 Invitation 25th Anniversary Pomorean Literary Society Scio College (Ohio 1893)
Scio, Ohio Pomorean Literary Association Scio College 1893 Near fine
Pretty invitation professionally printed and then decorated with flowers and ribbon by hand. The invitation is one-sided and printed on heavy card stock with decorative scalloped edges on all four sides. It measures 4"x6-1/2" and is in very nice condition. I failed to find anything about the sponsoring group, but Scio College had more lives than a cat. It began as Rural Seminary, a Methodist Episcopal school, and then became New Market College named for its town, and then it was the One Study University which required students to take classes only in their major. That apparently didn't worked out that well, as they dropped the idea and named it Scio College for the town of Scio. Enrollment dropped, however, so the pharmacy department was taken over by the University of Pittsburgh and everything else merged with Mt. Union. A scarce item, but a nice find for the right person.

35 Christmas Postcard A Christmas Reverie Santa with Pipe and Smoke 1908
1908 Very good
An ornate design with a shiny gold background and embossing make this one a standout. There is a slight postmark to the front, so the price has been adjusted for same, but it's still a beauty with just a little corner wear! Note the kids in the whirl of smoke from Santa's pipe. There's no indication of origin, but there is a printed notation on the back that says St. Nicholas Series No. 3. The message on the divided back reads "How did you find everybody in Logansport? Am going to Niad (?) this afternoon and wish you could be there too. That candy was just fine. Mary." The card is addressed to Clara McGlorie of Logansport, Indiana and postmarked 1908.

Covington, Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution 1926 Soft cover Very Good
The graphic cover of this program catches the eye! Very handsome and in nice condition too. There's only a few small faults, being a tiny loss of paper to tail of spine. a small chip to top front corner next to spine and a minor bit of soiling to very edge at bottom of title and frontis pages. Measures 8"x10-1/2" and is illustrated throughout with photographs and maps. Much history, as well as the program of events and the script of the pageant staged in honor of the festivities. Unpaginated, but it's pretty hefty for a program.

There are no dates on these beautiful unused cards, but judging by the cars in the one scene it would appear that they're vintage 1930's. All have a divided back with no writing and a moderately shiny surface. Scenes include:the New Madison Square Garden, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, the Zeppelin flying over City Hall Park, an airship flying over the Statue of Liberty, the Grand Central Office Building, the Paramount Building, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the Queensboro Bridge and the Roxy Theatre. All cards are clean with just a small bit of isolated edge and tips of corner wear.

41 Objects For Preparing Food (Exhibition Catalog 1973)
Washington, D.C. Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution 1973 soft cover Very Good
Fabulous art catalog celebrating the art of the lowly, as in the utensils and vessels used by cooks. If you know your way around the kitchen, or wish you did, you will love these oversized pages filled with black and white photos of many, many items -- some of which you may not even recognize. The book is huge at 12"x12-1/2" and was published to accompany an exhibit at the Renwick Gallery which ran from Feb. 9, 1973 to April 29, 1973. The New York Museum of Contemporary Crafts also played a role in making it happen.

42 Wonderful World of Pipes Magazine Volume 1, no. 2 (1971)
New York Rutledge Books Inc. Volume I, No. 2 soft cover Very Good
This is not one you find often, but if you love pipes (the kind for smoking) it's a lot of fun. There's great info and many photos, but the magazine didn't take itself so seriously that there wasn't a light side. Article topics include: tobacco blends and their wide range of prices; the pleasure of making your own pipe; astrology and the pipe-smoker, how corncob pipes are made, the 90,000 pipes in Keen's English Chop House in New York City, Keen's English Chop House , the Japanese love of pipes, pipes and the law, to filter or not to filter, pipe smokers and sports, how a pipe defines you, and people who do not understand pipes! Magazine is clean and tightly bound, measures 8-1/2"x11" and has 95 pages with NO advertising in the text. All confined to front and back.

43 Around the Clock with Rocky and Ruthie 1947 (Trademark Activity Book)
Akron, Ohio Saalfield 1947 soft cover Very good
This is an interesting piece of ephemera for children fro m Akron Saalfield Publishing. It's sort of a book, but more a booklet with a strange little spin. It's very nice and clean and measures 6"x11" with a bright attractive cover design. The only fault is one flat crease to the bottom back corner. It's amazing that this book survived in such great condition because it was designed as an activity book in which children were encouraged to clip pictures of products from ads in the newspaper and paste them at the appropriate places in the story. Fortunately, this copy survived unscathed! The "story" shows a brother and sister at various times throughout the day beginning with brushing their teeth (toothplaste ad required) to a pre-bedtime game of naming trademarks. Rather odd, but cute.

44 Hollywood Magazine July, 1937 (Myrna Loy Cover)
Fawcett 1937 Soft Cover Very good
The paper is crisp and clean on the cover of this vintage movie mag on which Myrna Loy looks lovely in geeen against a bright yellow backdrop. Back cover shows one small tear to the bottom edge which lies flat and has been neatly repaired by me with non-browning, archival tape to reverse side. Staples rusty, but no other faults. Stories cover the coronation of King George VI, Tyrone Power, Spencer Tracy, Mae West and more. Great ads too -- full color boating ad for Chesterfield cigarettes at back cover, plus one in color at front for Lovely Lady face powder.

45 Northwestern Versus Notre Dame 1948 Football Program
Notre Dame University 1948 soft cover Very good
Beautiful condition and a fun collectible no matter which side's your favorite (well, maybe!) The game was held at Notre Dame Stadium November 13, 1948. The program measures 8"x11-1/2" and has 84 pages. It's interesting that the leading advertiser is Chesterfield cigarettes. Not only do they command the back cover, but also paid for a two-page color spread inside. Studebaker and Coca-Cola likewise sprang for color advertising. Pictures of the campus, staff, and Notre Dame players abound, as do photos of the Northwestern team. I did a little research and it seems that the Fighting Irish ended victorious with a perfect season matched only by the University of Michigan Wolverines. The championship ultimately went to the Wolverines, but at least on this day the Notre Dame Fight Song filled the autumn air with joy!

47 Waltzes From Vienna 1935
New York Harcourt Brace 1935 soft cover Very good
Very well preserved music book sporting a handsome pictorial cover and a very sturdy blue spine. The only real fault is a small spine roll, but otherwise the book is clean and attractive inside and out. It measures 9"x12" and has 224 pages. Some selections are easily recognized such as The Blue Danube, The Merry Widow, and Tales From the Vienna Woods, while others await discovery. Among the composers you will find Schubert, Joseph Straus, and Oscar Straus, among many others. Small portraits and information about composers and selections scattered throughout. St. Mary's West Virginia Pleasants County School-Teacher's Institute St. Mary's West Virginia 1909 Good-plus
Card appears to be a class picture of the students, all young adults, the girls with Gibson Girl hair-dos and the boys in suits and hats. But my favorite is the guy sitting on the sill of the open window with his legs dangling down the building. All information was provided by the white lettering at bottom of card. 49 Beautiful Windows By Judd (1930's)
New York City Draper Fixtures by Judd Circa-1930's soft cover Very Good
I have a soft spot for interior design items so of course this one jumped right into my hand! Its very attractive with a green suede-like cover printed in gilt at face. The paper is coated and the pictures are quite lovely -- vignettes of rooms showing windows augmented by curtain hardware used as decoration. Judd did't sell window treatments -- they sold upscale window hardware. The booklet measures 6"x9-3/4" and 32 illustrated pages. Each spread describes (much text) something different such as cornices and swinging cranes, how to decorate windows in specific rooms, how to pleat drapes, and how to measure. Lovely!

50 A Happy Easter Squeaker Postcard Peeps 1912
1912
Novelty postcards are fun, especially the older ones with squeakers. It makes for a puffy card that I can't imagine sending in the mail, though fortunately, this one never was mailed. All you have to do is press and you can hear these little peeps on Easer morning. The card has a message on its divided back to Miss Grace Wolfinger. The message reads "With best Easter wishes from Mr. and Mrs. Gess (or Hess) April 7th 1912.

This is a surprisingly hard-to-find little booklet printed entirely in shades of blue, including illustrations by the subject. The booklet measures 6"x9" and is clean as a whistle inside and out. Flat crease to lower front corner is the only fault. 52 British Empire Exhibition 1924 Official Guide
Fleetway Press 1924 soft cover Very Good
This is a fun find because I've never had one before and it's a guide to a huge exhibition which celebrated Britain and the 58 - count 'em - countries that made up the Empire in 1924. All of the countries participated with the exception of Gambia and Gilbraltar, so when King George V opened the exhibition on April 23, 1924 (St. George's Day), it was a moment to remember. The second photo shows a world map that came from the pocket at the inside front cover. The guide measures 5-1/2"x8-1/2" and has 128 pages illustrated with photographs. Great ads throughout, plus those contained in the advertising section in photo three. The exhibit and the guide would remind you of a World's Fair.

54 Taliesin Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation 1985
Scottsdale, Ariszona Printer only 1986 soft cover Very good
This is a beautiful oversized, full color promotional piece likely sold to tourists. The condition is quite good with just a flat crease to the upper front corner and isolated wear spots along the spine which in no way compromise it. It's in full color throughout with gorgeous photos of Wright's work and that of Taliesin Architects. The name Taliesin derives from that of a Welsh poet-bard who sang of the glories of fine art. The piece (it seems too big to call a booklet) measures 9"x12". Some extra goodies were found tucked inside which I will pass along. One is an empty shopping bag from a Taliesin gift shop and the other a newspaper article from the March 27, 1987 Detroit News about a Weight house in Bloomfield Hills (The Gregor S. Affleck house) which the family donated to Lawrence Institute of Technology for restoration by students.

56 Nautical Magazine New Series (April, September, November, December 1876)
London, England Pewtress Company Printers 1876 softcover Good
Four tightly bound magazines, each measuring 5-1/2"x8-1/2" sporting the same blue cover design with ads at back cover. This is a hard one to find in these early issues and all four are completely intact save a small loss of paper at spines. A few spines show evidence of regluing to paper, but only at crown and tail of two. Spine paper has darkened and there are a few small exterior stains, plus dampstain mark to edges of a couple pages on two issues. Otherwise text block is very clean on all. The advertising is wonderful with illustration in some instances. Magazine was published for the merchant marine and addresses itself to issues concerning same such as meterology, Canadian shipping, Atlantic steam ferries, the Merchant Marine Act of 1876, the health of seaman, international regulations, preventing collisions at sea, the Arctic Expedition, ports of Sicily, and the standing of iron ships and errors of compasses, plus much more. The publication was founded in 1832 and run by its founder, a British admiral, until 1871.

57 Red Cross War Fund WWII Ephemera 1944
The American Red Cross
Here's a WWII trio comprised of a Red Cross sticker, a leaflet from 1944 (four sided)titled "This Is My Share", and a large folded leaflet, again four-sided and from 1944, titled "Red Cross At His Side". All are in very nice clean condition, but the large one needs to be handled carefully when opened, as old paper of this type can be easily torn. So far it's done well! The large one measures 11"x16" when closed and opens to a full page spread of photographs while the reverse shows cartoons about how the Red Cross handles the injured on the road to recovery, those in home service, prisoners of war, and disaster victims. The small leaflet measures 3-1.4"x5-1/2" and is meant to garner donations.

58 Fourth of July Postcard Girl Holding Fireworks (Series No. 3)

I love this card -- I've seen it with a gold background, but never silver until this one came along. The young woman holding the fireworks looks like a Gibson girl. The card is embossed, though lightly, has a divided back, and has never been written on, or sent in the mail. It's in excellent condition -- near fine -- and derives from the first decade of the 20th century, though is not dated. It will arrive in a plastic sleeve.

59 John Brown Homestead, Akron, Ohio Postcard 1913
1913 Very Good
Very pretty depiction of an Akron, Ohio landmark. The card is very nice in its plastic sleeve and retains a one cent stamp which covers the manufacturer's name. Only fault is a small bit of bleed-through from the postmark visible above the roof of the house - minor. The card was sent to Lodi, Ohio and the message (with errors) is as follows: "Am feeling fine. How is the weather their? I have my sweater coat on in the house. Bertha and Charlie went to Cleveland this morning. I will half to work Monday night. Sat. night was a busy one. Be home Sat. night some time. Arthur K."

61 Singin' in the Rain Souvenir Book London Palladium 1983 Starring Tommy Steele

An extravaganza of a souvenir book! Not only is it oversized at 9"x12" and filled with glorious stills from production numbers, but it also has a fold-out at the back which has four perforated postcards. Amazing that they're still intact, but they are. The program is marred only by spots of ege wear to the black cover and a small flat crease to the lower front corner. 62 With Best Easter Wishes Little Girls in a Nest Postcard 1910
1910 Very Good
What a cutie this is! Three little chicks take over a nest with a big red Easter egg and oust their featherd friends with their plain white one. The card is brightly colored with a slightly shiny surface, and is lightly embossed. There is virtually no edge wear. The divided back has been used and the stamp placed at a jaunty angle. It's addressed to Master (Illegible) West of Creston,Ohio. The message is dated March 16, 1910, but is very hard to decipher. Here's my best effort (with misspellings): "Dear Sir, I certently sea (?) how you enjoy thorz good old spring days and (illegible). I did the same. Remember (illegible). I just got your card and all OK. With Love, Brady"

63 Billy Rose's Aquacade New York World's Fair 1940
The Gruen Watch Co. 1940 soft cover
Wow -- what a graphic! I'd have picked it up just for that, but it's also a souvenir from the 1940 World's Fair. Billy Rose's Aquacade was a glamorous show featuring gorgeous people, both men and women -- sort of a Ziegfield follies in water, though he referred to it as a water ballet. The funny part is that Rose endorsed his ads. The one I like best says (in Rose's own words), "Just taste one -- you'll see why I'm proud to have SPAMWICHES served at the Aquacade." Now THAT's what you'd call glam for sure! :-) Measuras 9"x12" and has 32 pages and three full page color ads -- Coke, Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, and Chesterfield cigarettes.

64 Woodwork by Curtis 1946 Retail Sample Book Architectural Detail
Clinton, Iowa Curtis Company 1946 Hard Cover Very Good
I love architecture and old homes, so this catalog was a must-have. It's an enormous book used in a retail setting to show the types of moldings, fireplaces, doors, doorways, stairways, and cabinetry available for a 40's home. Huge full-page illustrations, some in black and white and some in full color -- 100 pages in all. The book is spiral bound to lie flat, but a piece of the plastic comb in missing at the very bottom of the spine. Book measures 16"x19" and is clean and nice inside and out with just a small bit of corner wear. Would be very helpful to an architect or designer, but also to someone who is restoring a 40's home.

65 1940's Wedding Pictures; Hand Colored and Duotone
Cleveland, Ohio Atlas Studio Very Good
These are very interesting - not just because everyone looks so nice and they're sooooooo 40's, but because of the photography. What we have here is a framed duotone under glass and a loose hand-colored photo of the same wedding with the addition of the groom and groomsmen. Both photos were take by Atlas Studio of Cleveland, but, sadly, we don't know who these people are. The duotone is sealed in a leatherette frame which has a stand on the back for display. The inside image is 8"x10" and the frame is 11-1/2"x13". The color one is also 8x10", so it's easy to frame.

68 The World Famous Great Gatsby's Antique Auction June 6th-7th, 1997 (Frank Loyd Wright's Personal Car)
Atlanta, Georgia Great Gatsby's 1997 soft cover Very Good
Fabulous over-sized auction catalog filled with rare and beautiful items, all of which are pictured in full color. Measures 10-1/2"x12-1/2 and is clean and tightly bound with just a few spots of wear at spine, none of which compromises its integrity. The former owner's mailing label is on the reverse. This particular catalog is noteworthy due to the sale of Frank Lloyd Wright's personal car, a 1956 Aztec Red Mercedes Gull Wing designed especially for him after he redesigned a New York City car dealership which has since been demolished. The opening bid was to have been $300,000 and Jay Leno was one of many collectors eyeing it, but, try as I may, I cannot find the gavel price. Catalog has 46 pages.

72 Aishet Hayil (Art Catalog 1993)

Very beautiful exhibition catalog in lovely condition. A soft cover book is wrapped around completely with the treal colored "jacket" which may have had a ribbon tie given the two slots for one, but doesn't require it, as the jacket stays closed without it.The exhibition is an artistic interpretation of the only Biblical hymn to wome -- Aishet Hayil. The collective works are a tribute to one woman -- Julia Kiener Forchheimer (1900-1991) who opened the handweaving department in the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem in 1936.Illustrated with color photographs of the art with accompanying text. 73 Scully Jones Selector No. 2; Dimensions for Drawing Morse Tapers
Chicago Scully-Jones and Company Unknown Very good
I am fascinated by these sorts of little measuring devices -- can't let one pass me by. This one is not dated, but it's before zip codes which means it's from before 1963. It was made by Scully-Jones, designers and manufacturers of standard and special production tools, including tap and drill chucks, arbors, cutting tools, boring equipment, centers and more. This device is two sided, so it performs two functions -- providing a Morse taper number and the size of the taper per foot and per inch which is helpful for drawing them. The slide is in great condition and measures 4"x7-1/4" closed and twice the length when completely extended.

In this digital age when cameras are built into phones it's amazing that only 82 years ago a relatively primitive Kodak would be state of the art. The Kodak camera is not be dismissed lightly though, as it brought home photography to the masses. The little magazines (I love the name Kodakery!) encourage amateurs to enter a big money contest with lots of tips and ideas. Great photos throughout of weddings, children etc. There's articles about what makes pictures interesting, the new Kodak Verichrome film, tips on nature pictures and more. Magazines measure a small 5-1/2"x7-1/2" and are clean and tightly bound.

76 Formfit In Show Business (Formfit Lingerie Sales Brochure and 33-1/3 RPM Record)
Formfit Uknowm 50s'-60's softcover Very Good
Quirky, fun collectible and probably the oddest thing I ever bought. No date on this one, but clothing on drawings would indicate late 50's to early 60's. Bright pink sales brochure was issued to the would-be Formit lingerie salesperson, or as they say on the record, "corsetiere!" Inside it says, "Join Betsy White for a preview in sound of your Show Business Career." This is augmented by a drawing of the stylish Betsy White, a female salesperson holding up a girdle, and a funky picture of an early 20th century chorus line which doesn't seem to really have anything to do with anything. The record plays great and is laugh-out-loud funny. Includes music! Brochure opens as a trifold with photo of president of the company at center. Only defect of note are two closed tears over the area that holds the 33-1/3 rpm record.

78 Erte Exhibition 1987/88 (Price Sheet Laid-in)
London Sevenarts Ltd. (Grosvenor Gallery) 1987
Beautiful, fanciful, charming -- the adjectives could be strung like pearls on a necklace to describe the works of the famous Russian artist, Erte, whose work graced the cover of Harper's Bazaar more than 200 times. Erte was a Russian artist whose early introduction to Persian art inspired him to pursue a career which included not only cover art, but costumes and stage designs of spectacular merit. This exhibit catalog is not seen often and is in clean, tightly bound condition. The art is all in color and celebrates the five year collaboration between Erte and Leon Leonidoff who from 1963-68 was director of Radio City Music Hall. The catalog marks the first time these works were ever viewed in exhibition. Included with the catalog is a price sheet still in its pocket at back. The catalog measures 8-3/4"x12" and has twenty pages.

79 Gilcrease: The Journal of Gilcrease Museum Vol. XIII, No. 1 (Spring/Summer 2005)
Tulsa, Oklahoma Thomas Gilcrease Museum Association 2005 Vol. XIII, No. 1 (Spring/Summer 2005) Card cover Very good
Very attractive magazine. The focus on this issue is Peru and ancient cultures of South America. The articles are all illustrated with color photographs, many of which depict the art of the various civilizations. Content includes these topics: Hiram Bingham and Machu Picchu; Dego de Trujillo's account of the conquest of the Inca by the Spanish in 1532; the ancient cultures of South America; and emperors of the Inca. The magazine measures 8-1/2" x 10-3/4" and has 64 pages. It's crisp and clean with no names or writing. The only fault is a light crease to lower corner of the first half of the text. I was able to flatten them and it's quite nice.

80 Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity Silver Jubilee Convention Program 1923 Cleveland
Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity soft cover Very good 1923
This is a cool thing, whether you are an alum yourself or are looking for an ancestor who was a member. Looks like this was quite a bash, as brothers descended on the Hotel Hollendan for a five day gala -- December 27th to the 31st. It's interesting to note that Zeta Beta Tau was the first Jewish fraternity in the U.S.. It's not sectarian anymore, but it still was at the time of this event. The brochure measures 5-1/2"x8" and pulls out to reveal five printed page on the front and five on the back. Members came from City College of New York, Columbia, Pennsylvania. Cornell, Boston, (Case)Western Reserve, Tulane, Union College Brooklyn, Ohio State, Syracuse, Louisiana State, Illinois, Harvard, Michigan, McGill, Virginia, Alabama, MIT, Missouri, Chicago, Vanderbilt, Southern California. Washington & Lee, Yale, California, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Washington (Seattle) and Washington (St. Louis). OFFICERS FOR THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION were Julius Kahn, Harold Riegelman, Edwin R. Goodman, Clarence K. Weil, and Harry Steiner.

81 German Best Wishes Postcard Bird and Flowers
Germany 1917 Very good condition
This is really a pretty card with bright colors and virtually no wear, as it was never sent through the mail. The cardstock is exceptionally heavy and the design appears to be pasted on. It's a raised design which gives it an extra dimension. On the back it says Series 1700 Made In Germany. The divided back shows the recipient to be Sophie Nundahl of Perry, North Dakota. The message side says "A Happy Birthday Jan. 30, 1917 From E."

82 Taylor Inn, Lodi, Ohio Postcard
Germany Unknown
Very bight and clean postcard which was filled out but never sent. The message is funny because Lodi is still a very small town and has no hotel at all these days. The card was addressed to Miss Lura Sheehan Alliance, Ohio. On the other side of the dividing line it reads "Hello, Lura -- You will think I have died, but I am very much alive. Now will you make fun of Lodi when we have a hotel like this? Come up if you don't believe it is truly here. Blanche."

83 French Hand-Tinted Photo Postcard Woman at Tea Table 1922
France 1922 Very Good
Pretty in peach is this lovely young woman seated at a tea table alone -- or is she? Her expression may say otherwise! The details and the hand tinted dress, tea things, lamp and flowers add so much charm. This card was sent in the mail from Vianen, but is still quite lovely with no real wear. The divided back has a lengthy message and was sent to someone in Europe.

84 Real Photo Postcard Young Woman in Backyard early 1900's

Nice, unused black and white real photo postcard of a young woman posing for the camera in the backyard of her home. She's wearing a skirt and a blouse with a large bow and her hair is upswept. Also visible is part of the house next door. Clearly American. What dates this card though is the paper it's printed on -- Noko -- which was in use from 1907 to the 1920's. This was taken in the early part of the span.

85 The Romance of Scotland 1932 Travel Brochure
England London Midland and Scottish Railway 1932 soft cover
A charming graphic and a map so crisp that I felt like the first person to open it! There's a tiny tear at the top of one of the folds, but I repaired it with a tiny piece of nonbrowning archival tape. The brochure measures 4"x9-1/2" folded, but then opens to 8" wide. It's printed on coated paper and has photogrpahs in black and white with the crisp map at back. Unpaginated, but I counted 25.

86 Real Photo Postcard Two Young Men in Hats
Unknown
This real photo card is set against a studio background and appears to be two brothers -- they look very much alike. The one seated, smoking the pipe and wearing the bowler hat appears to be asserting his elder status, as he is also wearing long pants, while the other one in the tophat wears knickers and long socks. The card was never used, so the stamp box is visible which normally helps date it. But the symbol, while definitely an indicator of a real photo, is one belogning to an unknown manufacturer. But the clothing clearly sets it in the early 1900's.

87 Westinghouse Engineer Magazine November 1945 (TV Broadcasting from the Statosphere)
Westinghouse Electric 1945 Volume Five, Number Six soft cover Very good
Very handsome cover design for this trade journal produced by Westinghouse. The back cover shows an image of Skyhooks for Television, a system of high-flying planes to act as television broadcasting and repeater stations, called Stratovision. The first article in the magazine tells the whole story. Other articles cover nuclear engineering, the electric torpedo, a simple single sideband carrier system, a moisture-proof insulation called Fosterite, 1000-KVA powered sleds, and the control of electric furnaces. There's also a section on new technology. Magazine is clean and bright with just a small bit of wear to the top of spine and measures 9"x10-1/2". It's one of those magazines which start at the next page number following the last issue, so I did the math and came up with 31 pages.

88 Real Photo Postcard Dressed up Couple Flapper with parasol, Tuxedo
Unknown 1923 Good-plus
This is one of my favorite postcards of all time! Not only is the image fetching, but the guy in the photo wrote the message on the back of it -- "1923, I am the one with no hair. The little "Morgan" looks adorable." And indeed she does with her strappy shoes, bobbed hair, parasol and fringy outfit. He's pretty spiffy too though -- check out the monacle and the spats! Only detractor is isolated edge wear. Sepia toned.

89 Nine Carte de Visites Womens' Portraits, Kentucky
Kentucky Unknown Good condition
Here we have a grouping of carte de visites featuring women of the mid-19th century. The carte de visite was a craze at the time and people collected them like baseball cards. These are all small portraits mounted on heavy cardboard like a cabinet photo, but measure only around 2-1/2"x3-1/2", sometimes 4". Often the backs are very ornate, as photographers used the blank space to advertise. These, however, are fairly plain. Most derive from Louisville or Lexington Kentucky, though we do have one from Brownville, Tennessee. Two show a light touch of hand-tinting and one has a name penciled on the bottom. Very hard to read, but I think it says Sabra Hyerson. She is pretty girl at the far right your screen in the last row.

90 Die-cut Valentine Postcard May Happiness Be Thine Hearts Girl Fence
Unknown Fine
What a beautiful card this is -- more greeting card than postcard, as there is a poem on the back and no stamp box. Beautiful die-cut edges give it a lacy look and the edges of the design, including the hearts, are embossed. There's no date and no evidence of origin, but it's a beauty and was clearly treasured. The poem reads "I send this word to you my love, It will always hold true, As long as you love me, my love, I surely will love you." Could be a Valentine, but could also be a romantic missive any time of year. The message on the front is "May Happiness Be Thine"

91 Patriotic Postcard My Country Tis of Thee Stars and Scroll
Germany International Art Publishing Co. Unknown
What a cutie for the Fourth of July, or even Memorial Day. It looks like the work of Ellen Clapsaddle and there are attribtions of this is in the marketplace, but I have gone over it thoroughly with a magnifying glass and cannot find a signature to confirm it. Nonethleess it's a sweet image with the banner reading the first few lines of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." Love the way the little patriot is standing on a pile of stars! Great graphic. The card has a divided back and was never maile. Penciled message reads "Bertha From Madeleine." Tiny bit of corner wear, but otherwise crisp.

92 Florida Official Road Map 1952
State Road Department of Florida 1952 soft cover Fine
Crisp, clean, seemingly unused, map of Florida -- just the thing for a 50's road trip. What's neat about it is that you could use the front address lines and send it back home to friends and family. This one, however, was not sent. The map sports color photos and when folded is larger than the maps issued by the service stations. Closed it meaures 5"x8-1/2". There's extra tourist info too, such as a list of the meanings of Florida Indian names. Note on front -- "Drive safely .... prevent sorrow." This was a time when kids bounced around the backseat of the car like balls for playing jacks. I was one of them!!

93 Best Wishes Postcard Floral with Water Scene
Germany Unknown Very Good
An explosion of flowers surround a bucolic scene of a cottage with a path leading to stepping stones on the water and a woman following them out to the reeds. This card gives very few clues as to where it's been as it was never mailed and has no writing. It's German and lightly embossed. Small spot of wear to upper right corner only fault.

94 Germany Baden and the Black Forest Vintage Travel Brochure
Reichsbahnzentrale fur den Deutschen Reiseverkehr Soft cover
Beautiful richly colored graphic to front of this vintage travel brochure. It's not dated, but it came to me with a large number of travel items dating from the early 1930's. I would guess this in the range of 1928-1931. There's a very handsome and very clean, crisp fold-out map at back. The brochure measures 4"x9" and is illustrated with black and white photos printed on quality coated paper. 44 pages.

95 Christmas Greetings From the Regiment of Midshipmen (circa 1960's)
The Regiments of Midshipmen Unknown Heavy Cradstock Fine
Beautiful, unused Christmas card fashioned from especially heavy card stock for use by the Regiment of Midshipmen. There is no date, but I am pretty sure that the image on the face depicts the chapel which may well date it from the 60's. It measures 6"x7x1/4" and opens to reveal a color painting of the U.S. frigate Constitution.

96 Choirs From the Basilicas and the Vatican (Program Laid-in) 1919
New York St. Gregory Musical society Inc. 1919 soft cover Very Good
This two-piece souvenir of a 1919 evening of liturgical music marks the first time in history that the choirs from the Roman Basilicas and the Vatican performed outside of Rome. The program does not indicate the city directly, but an Ohio reference on back cover and the fact that the location was St. Clair Avenue leads us to believe it had to have been Cleveland. The most important piece, however, is the larger brochure which measures 8x10" and is profusely illustrated and filled with information about the choirs and their history. Although unpaginated, we counted 24. Cover, though simple, is banded in gold with ecclisastical decoration.

97 Mexico By Motor
American Automobile Association 1950 soft cover
Great graphic cover art and a whopping 192 pages of information and vintage advertising makes this a worthy addition to the travel ephemera collection. More than a brochure -- practically a book. Measures 4-1/2"x9-1/4" and is illustrated amply with maps and black and white photographs. Very clean and well kept with just a little cluster of small spots to back cover.

98 Singer Sewing Library Vols. 1,2,3,4 (Shortcuts to Home Sewing, How to Make Dresses, How to Make Children's Clothes, How to Make Draperies) 1930
Singer Sewing Machine Company 1930 soft cover Good
There should be a slipcase with these four volumes of the Singer Sewing Library, but it has apparently been lost along the way. Still we have the four booklets in good condition -- tightly bound with pristine internals. Faults are confined to the outside and are not many in number -- toning to volume 1, a small stain to cover of three, all at back with the exception of No. 1 which shows a small pink stain to lower front corner. Booklets measure 5-1/2"x8-1/4" and have 64 pages in two and 48 in the other two. All are illustrated with small drawings throughout.

99 Wadsworth, Ohio High School Commencement 1938
Wadsworth, Ohio Wadsworth High School 1938 soft cover Fine
Handsome high school graduation program commemorating the 61st commencement June 1, 1938. It's very nicely done with a protective glassine endpaper bound in at the first and last pages. The program measures 3-3/4" wide and 9-1/2" tall, has 13 printed pages, and is in excellent condition with no faults of note. A separate welcome page is laid-in. Senior class officers included Kenwood Rasor, Dale Hoerger and Evelyn Nicodemus. The valedictorian was Margaret Lansinger. An interesting fact page shows that six graduates received diplomas at the first commencement in 1877 while 120 trod the boards in 1938

100 An Evening Prayer Gift Book (Robert Louis Stevenson et al)
New York Barse & Hopkins Card cover Fine Fine
I very much like these old gift books from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This one has no date, but is filled with vintage charm including such niceties as heavy paper with a deckled outer edge, a tipped-in color illustation at frontis (rather than having been printed on the page), a dustjacket, and gilt embossing to the front cover. Though Stevenson is listed as the author, the fact is there are many including Robert Browning, Tennyson, Abraham Lincoln and others. There are no illustrations other than the one mentioned, but the type fonts provide mch variation. Includes Brownings "Grow Old with Me". Book measures 4"x9" and features twelve poems or uplifting quotations. Not heavily religious.
