1971 Steam Passenger Service Directory Sixth Annual (Additional Ephemera Laid-in)
1 1971 Steam Passenger Service Directory Sixth Annual (Additional Ephemera Laid-in)
New York Empire State Railway Museum Inc. 1971 Sixth annual soft cover All items very good
This is an interesting combination of items, all in one from a previous collector. The 6th Annual Steam Passenger Service Directory of 1971 was stuffed with numerous newspaper stories about trains, primarily from the Toledo, Ohio area during the 70's. These did cause some toning to the reverse side of cover, both front and back, but I have sequestered them now in a plastic bag in which they will arrive. Also accompanying the directory are a brochure, a business card and an unused ticket, all from the Toledo Lake Erie and Western Railway, Inc. The directory measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and has 128 page , all of which contain a black and white photograph, plus info on each train.

2 An Interurban Goes Modern And Other Early C.E.R.A. Bulletins (Bulletins 20 through 34)
Chicago Central Electric Railfans' Association 1977 reprint soft cover Very good
The publications of the Central Electric Railfans' Association are wonderful -- much info, black and white photographs and technical drawings. This one measures 8-1/2"x11" and has a lot to read. There are many Midwestern railways mentioned here, but the star is the one on the cover -- The North Shore Line. Booklet is clean and nice with just a few small spots to back cover

B&O Railroad Miniature Metal Sign and Three B&O Color Postcards
4 B&O Railroad Miniature Metal Sign and Three B&O Color Postcards
Earlton, New York; Washington Audio-Visual Designs & Washington Chapter NRHS 1967 All In fine Condition
This is a unique offering -- a small 3" diameter metal sign for the B&O Railroad, offered in the 1950's as a premium for Post cereals. The collector who owned it paired it with three color postcards, one of which is dated 1967. None have been used or written on and all are in excellent condition. The dated one was published by Washington Chapter NRHS and shows a President Class 4-6-2 pulling the B&O's Ambassador past Ivy City as it leaves Union Station Washington, D.C. Dec. 16, 1951. The other cards show "The Cincinnatian" train No 53 westbound from Toledo, Ohio July, 1956 and the B&O Mikado standing at rest during the final steam passenger run May, 1958 from Cleveland to Halloway, Ohio. 6 Broadside: Pennsylvania Lines Excursions to Loudonville, Ohio Free Street Fair October 8th and 9th, 1902
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Pennsylvania Lines 1902 Good condition
Very nice broadside with crisp, bright blue printing. The Loudonville Free Street Fair is still held every year, so it's fun to see an early advertisement. The Pennsylvania lines were offering tickets for riound trips for $1.35 to as little as 30 cents. There were three groups of prices -- the first included Crestline, Mansfield, Lucas, and Perryville. Group two included Orrville, Smithville, Wooster, Shreve, Custaloga, Big Prairie and Lakeville. and the third group consisted of Coshocton, Warsaw Junction, Mohawk, Walhonding, Cavallo, Brink Haven, and Edlam. The broadside measures 6-1/4" x 18-3/4". I repaired three small tears with archival tape, but you can't even see them. There is a previous piece of tape on the back and one small area with a small white sticker to the tack mark at the top. The back of the sign is filled with penciled algebra problems!

Canadian National Railways Menu September 6,1939
8 Canadian National Railways Menu September 6,1939
Canada Canadian National Railways 1939 card cover Very Good
Very handsome 1939 menu for passengers on the Canadian National Railway September 6, 1939. This was a banner year for Canada with the arrival of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth who in May of '39 took a Royal Tour of the country stopping at both small towns and large cities to the delight of fervent crowds. To celebrate the Royal Tour the two Canadian railways -- the Canadian National and the Canadian Pacific --each worked hard to outdo the other in providing half the cars for the Royal Train. Of course by the time this menu was printed the hoopla was all over, but the cover shows The National Monument at Ottawa which was unveiled for the King and Queen on May 18th, 1939. A very nice addition to the menu, Candiana, railroadiana, or travel collection. Measures 6-1/2"x9-1/2" and is printed on heavy card. The left side is in English and the right in French.

Chessie and Peake are among the cutest logos in all of vintage advertising, especially if you love cats. The box and its contents measure 3-3/4" x 5". There is no date here, but on the bottom of the box is a two digit postal code which means it's earlier than 1963 when the zip code was born.

Collier's Magazine: The Nation's Weekly August 19, 1933 (George Creel, Railroad Troubles, Kathleen Norris, Babe Herman)
10 Collier's Magazine: The Nation's Weekly August 19, 1933 (George Creel, Railroad Troubles, Kathleen Norris, Babe Herman)
New York P.F. Collier & Son 1933 soft cover Robert O. Reid
Striking cover art by Robert O. Reid sets the scene for August, 1933. Reid's work was frequently on the cover -- and it's no wonder why. This magazine is handsomely illustrated throughout with a nice mix of articles and fiction. The fiction writers include George Agnew Chamberlain, Stephen Morehouse Avery, Ruth Chandler Moore, Roark Bradford, and Kathleen Norris. Two articles that stoood out was one by George Creel, who was an investigative journalist and politiican who served on the U.S. Committee of Public Information, which was actually a propaganda organization started by Woodrow Wilson. In his article he addresses the problems of the railroad industry in the 30's. The other article focuses on Babe Herman, the eccentric Chicago Cubs player. Magazine is oversized at 10-1/2"x13-1/3" and is quite nice with just a few tiny edge tears. Original mailing label at bottom front cover. The recipient was from Barberton, Ohio.

North Western Lines Baraboo Line Passenger Service Spring 1995
17 North Western Lines Baraboo Line Passenger Service Spring 1995
Elmhurst, Illinois Chicago & North Western Historical Society 1995 Vol. 22, No. 2 soft cover Near fine
This is such a wonderful magazine, a quarterly that has an amazing amount of material in each issue. I love these -- had a bunch of them once when I bought a lot of railroadiana from a collector, but haven't seen one in years. The photograph is excellent, primarily in black and white, but there's color art in this one too (see photo) as well as a time table and technical drawings. Among the topics are A Ride on the Streamliner "Capitol 400", Passenger Service in the Baraboo Valley, Paul Proehl's North Western Art, and more. Magazine measures 8-1/2"x11" and has 89 pristine pages.

On Either Side London and North Eastern Railway (circa 1930's)
18 On Either Side London and North Eastern Railway (circa 1930's)
England London and Noeth Eastern Railway No date. Circa 1930's Card cover Very good condition
This is a very unique and clever title for a trip via railroad. The booklet has been folded in half which may, or may not, have been the idea, but it certainly urged the tourist to do it, thanks to the split design and its title. "On either side" means the traveler could see points of interest in one direction looking out at London (King's Cross) and Edinburgh, Waverley, Fort William, Inverness and Aberdeen from one window and then out at it from a window of the other side of the tracks. There's many sites mentioned with depiction throughout, plus a nice fold-out map in color. The booklet is clean and attractive, though does show a few worn spots to the edges of the cover, primarily at the back. There is a vertical crease at both covers, but I used clear archival tape to support it from the inside (see photo). The brochure measures 8-1/2" x 8-3/4" and has 72 pages plus some extras.
